At effectively every Thai course a single booking is accepted, and you pay the same green fee as a golfer in a group, with no solo surcharge (Fairways of Eden, accessed 2026-09-01). The caveat: on busy weekend mornings some courses prefer to complete four-balls, which can mean waiting for a suitable group or being paired with strangers.

For a quiet solo round, tee off on a weekday morning in the April to October green season, when courses are emptiest. For a weekend in the November to March high season, a pre-arranged tee time beats walking on. If being paired sounds daunting rather than social, that is the honest downside of solo golf here, and it is worth planning around.

Is there a single supplement on a solo golf trip?

Green fees carry no solo surcharge, but transport and hotel do. A private course transfer costs the same THB 1,400 to 2,500 whether one or four people ride, so a single pays the full rate alone.

The green fee is the fair part. Where solo travel costs more is everything you would normally split: the van to the course, and the twin-share room you now take alone. Package operators fold private transfers into the price, which spreads across a group but not a single.

Which courses welcome a walk-on single?

The closest, most flexible courses. Lanna (about 10 minutes from the Old City), North Hill (about 15 minutes from the airport), and Mae Jo (about 20 minutes out) take singles at short notice; premium courses need more lead time.

Lanna Golf Club is the standout for a spontaneous solo round: closest to the Old City and one of the few courses where walking is allowed. North Hill offers private-club conditioning at value pricing near the airport, ideal for a layover round. Mae Jo has the most local, friendly feel, though its conditioning is the weakest of the premium set and pace of play is slow. How does the caddie work when I am on my own?

One caddie per golfer is mandatory at every Thai course, so solo players get a dedicated personal caddie for the whole round: green reading, club selection, bag, scorekeeping, cart.

The use of a caddie is compulsory at 100% of Thai courses, always at a ratio of one caddie per golfer (LENGOLF solo guide, accessed 2026-09-01). The caddie fee to the course is about THB 300 to 400 in Chiang Mai. The tip is separate and expected: THB 400 to 600 per 18, up to THB 700 to 1,000 for premium courses or standout service. Can I rent clubs instead of flying with my own?

Yes, and plenty of solo travellers do to dodge oversize-bag fees on the flight in. Most Chiang Mai courses and pro shops rent sets by the round, roughly THB 500 to 1,500 depending on brand and course tier, with shoes and gloves available too.

Renting makes sense for a short solo trip when a checked golf bag would cost more in airline fees than a few rental rounds. Value courses like Lanna and Mae Jo carry basic sets on the lower end of that range; premium clubs like Chiangmai Highlands and Alpine stock better brands nearer the top. The honest downside: rental inventory at busy courses runs thin on weekend mornings and the sets can be worn or mismatched on loft, so reserve a set when you book the tee time rather than showing up and hoping. What is a safe, reliable transfer plan for a solo golfer?

Skip Grab for course days. A pre-booked private driver gives a fixed price, a confirmed early pickup, and boot space for clubs, none of which Grab reliably delivers to a remote course at 6am.

Chiang Mai is safe for solo travel; the weak link is transport logistics, not personal safety. CNX airport is about 4km from the Old City, roughly 10 to 15 minutes and THB 150 to 200 by taxi. Courses ring the valley 30 to 45 minutes out. Grab works inside the city but is risky for early tee times, remote pickups, and fitting a golf bag. A pre-booked round trip runs THB 1,400 to 2,500.

When should a solo traveller avoid Chiang Mai golf?

Avoid March and often late February to mid-April. Burning season pushes air quality into unhealthy territory; on 4 March 2026 Chiang Mai ranked among the world's ten most polluted cities with AQI above 150.

By late March 2026 it got worse: on 29 March the city topped the global index at AQI 263 with PM2.5 at 188 micrograms per cubic metre (IQAir, accessed 2026-09-01). Golfing four hours outdoors in that is a genuine health call, and it is the honest reason not to book a solo trip for March.

Best solo months are November to February: cool mornings, dry, clear, though busiest and dearest. The June to October green season is cheapest and quietest for walk-on singles, with morning tee times ahead of afternoon storms.

What does a lean solo itinerary look like?

Three nights, three rounds, one course per day, driver on golf days only. Warm up at a value course, then step up. This is the frame; scale it to your dates.
