A junior golf holiday in Thailand works best in Chiang Mai over 4 to 5 nights with 3 rounds, mixing one easy course with one serious test. Budget a teen at the adult rate (from ฿1,950 all-in at Gassan Legacy in green season), one mandatory caddie per player, and morning tee times so afternoons stay free for the rest of the family.
Is Chiang Mai a good place for a junior golf holiday?
Yes. More than a dozen courses within about an hour of the city, tee times before the heat, and plenty of non-golf activities make it unusually family-friendly.
Chiang Mai has a real junior golf pedigree. Alpine Golf Resort hosted the AJGA Thailand Junior Championship in September 2025, with 111 players under 18 from 13 nations (Nation Thailand, accessed 2026-11-02). It hosted again in August 2026, which we covered in our AJGA Thailand junior championship at Alpine report.
For a golf-mad teenager that matters. They play the same fairways as the region's best juniors. For the rest of the family it matters less than the logistics: CNX airport sits close to the Old City, and the courses ring the valley. Nobody spends half the trip in a van, and most transfers to the course take 15 to 45 minutes.
The trade-off is cost. Thai courses rarely discount juniors the way many clubs back home do. The next section covers why.
Do Chiang Mai courses give junior green fees?
Rarely in a published form. Budget teenagers at the adult rate, ask each club for a junior discount, and treat any reduction as a bonus.
We checked the published rate cards on 2026-11-02. Royal Chiang Mai's official rate page lists a single 18-hole green fee of ฿2,800 and a 9-hole rate of ฿1,600. Its child discount covers hotel rooms for ages 5 to 11, not golf. We could not find a published under-18 green fee at the other premium courses.
This is the honest downside of a junior golf trip here. A 15-year-old usually costs the same as their parent on the first tee. On top of that, every player pays a caddie fee, so a junior is never "free" even when a club waives the green fee.
Where juniors do save is in green season (April to October), when clubs discount quietly and are more flexible on request. When you enquire through our golf team, we ask each course about junior pricing on your dates.
Which Chiang Mai courses suit teenage golfers?
Match the course to the handicap. Flat and forgiving courses for developing juniors, long championship layouts for competitive ones, and one showpiece round for everybody.
| Course | Best for | Holes / yards | Green-season all-in | Junior note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gassan Legacy | Developing juniors | 18 / 6,852 | ฿1,950 day, ฿1,650 night | Flattest Gassan, floodlit |
| Lanna Golf Club | Short practice rounds | 27 / 7,172 | Green fee about ฿1,350 | 10 min from Old City, walking allowed |
| Chiang Mai Gymkhana | First rounds, heritage | 9 / 2,909 | Confirm at booking | Short 9, gentle intro |
| Alpine Golf Resort | Competitive juniors | 27 / about 7,500 | ฿3,700 | AJGA junior host course |
| Chiang Mai Highlands | The treat round | 27 / about 7,003 | ฿3,400 | Top conditioning |
For a teen still breaking 100, Gassan Legacy Golf Club is the friendliest full 18. It is open, mostly flat, and floodlit, so a twilight round dodges the heat. Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the Old City and one of the few courses that lets you walk, which is good practice for juniors who carry at home.
For a first taste, the 9-hole Chiang Mai Gymkhana dates from 1898 and takes about two hours. In-city Star Dome Golf Club runs 9 holes at night under lights, which suits a jet-lagged teen on arrival day.
For a single-figure junior, play Alpine Golf Resort. The par-5s are long from the back tees and the island-green par-3 punishes a nervous swing. Chiang Mai Highlands has paspalum greens and heavy bunkering, so it is the course a teenager will still talk about at school. How does caddie culture work for juniors?
Every player gets a caddie, juniors included. Budget ฿300-400 caddie fee plus a ฿400-600 cash tip per 18 holes.
Caddies at Thai courses are mandatory and mostly female. They drive the cart, read greens, clean clubs and keep score. For a junior that is a free lesson in course management. A good caddie will tell a 14-year-old exactly where not to miss.
Brief your teen before round one. They should say "khob khun khrap" or "khob khun kha" at the end and hand the tip over in cash at the bag drop. Parents usually fund the tip, but letting the junior hand it over teaches the etiquette. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the details.
When should we go with school-age kids?
November to early January for the best golf, July and August for the best value. Avoid the Easter holidays, which fall inside burning season.
| School break | Chiang Mai season | Golf conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas / New Year | High season (Nov-Mar) | Cool, dry, 15-22C early mornings | Best golf, dearest, book early |
| February half-term | High season, early haze | Warm, air quality starts to slip | Check AQI daily |
| Easter | Burning season peak | Hot, smoky, AQI often above 150 | Avoid if you can |
| Summer (Jul-Aug) | Green season (Apr-Oct) | Humid, morning golf, short storms | Best value |
| October half-term | Late green season | Heaviest rain Sep-Oct | Mornings only |
The burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and peaks in March. On the worst days the AQI climbs past 300, and Chiang Mai has ranked among the world's most polluted cities in recent seasons. Children breathe more air per kilo of body weight than adults, so this matters more for a family than for a golf group of adults. Check IQAir's Chiang Mai readings daily if you must travel then, and read our burning season golf guide first.
Summer is the sleeper pick. Rounds start at 6:30 or 7:00, finish before the afternoon storms, and green-season all-in rates sit well below high season. Our beat the heat golf guide covers hydration and tee-time strategy for teens.
How many rounds should a junior play?
Three rounds in four or five nights. A teenager can play more, but the rest of the family usually cannot tolerate more.
Golf-mad teens will happily play every day. The constraint is the family. Three rounds leaves room for two full non-golf days, and those days decide whether a non-golfing sibling enjoys the trip.
A pattern that works for the families we plan for:
- Day 1: Arrive, easy evening.
- Day 2: Gassan Legacy or Lanna, a warm-up round.
- Day 3: Family day. Elephant sanctuary, cooking class or Doi Suthep.
- Day 4: Alpine or Highlands, the big round.
- Day 5: Rest morning, then a 9-hole twilight round or a range session.
- Day 6: Third round, then home.
Our Culture & Golf package follows this rhythm: 5 nights, 3 rounds, culture days in between. For a tighter trip the Northern Value package fits 3 rounds into 4 nights.
What do non-golfers do while the junior plays?
Morning rounds finish by early afternoon, so the family day starts at lunch. Chiang Mai has more family activities than most golf destinations.
A 7:00 tee time means the junior is back by 13:00. Non-golfers can take the morning at a pool, a cooking class or the Old City temples, then meet for lunch. Highlands has an on-site spa if a parent wants to come along without playing.
Our Chiang Mai for families guide lists activities that work for mixed ages.
What dress code applies to junior golfers?
The same as adults: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes. No denim, sports shorts or sandals.
Course staff enforce this at check-in, and teenagers in a football shirt get sent to the pro shop. Pack two collared shirts per round day, because the humidity soaks through by the back nine. Pro shops stock mostly adult sizes, so bring junior gloves and shoes from home. Our Chiang Mai golf dress code guide covers the details.
Is a package worth it for a family golf trip?
For three or more rounds, usually yes. For one junior round on a sightseeing holiday, book direct and save.
A family trip has more moving parts than an adults' golf trip: two or three tee times, a non-golfer schedule, and early pickups with a teenager's bag. Our packages bundle green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support. The private driver matters most. A Grab at 6:00 with a full golf bag and a sleepy teen is a gamble.
If your junior only wants one round, a pre-booked round trip costs about ฿1,400-2,500 and you can book the course direct. If you also want to combine golf with a family stay, the Alpine Stay & Play covers one night and one round. Our booking direct vs agent guide runs the numbers.
We are enquiry-driven: tell us ages, handicaps and dates on our Chiang Mai golf holidays page, and we send a quote that covers junior pricing and a non-golfer plan. A deposit confirms it.

Do Chiang Mai golf courses offer junior green fees?
Rarely in a published form. Royal Chiang Mai's official rate page lists one 18-hole green fee of ฿2,800 with no junior line, and we have not found a published under-18 rate at the other premium courses (checked 2026-11-02). Some clubs will discount for juniors on request, especially in green season, but treat that as a bonus and not a budget line. Budget a teenager at the adult rate, then ask. The caddie fee is charged per player whatever their age, so a junior always costs at least ฿300-400 in caddie fee plus a tip on top of the green fee.
What is the best Chiang Mai golf course for a teenage golfer?
It depends on their level. For a teen still learning to score, Gassan Legacy is the flattest and easiest Gassan layout at ฿1,950 all-in in green season, and Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the Old City with walking allowed. For a competitive junior, Alpine Golf Resort is the obvious test: it hosted the AJGA Thailand Junior Championship in 2025 and 2026 and stretches past 7,400 yards from the back tees. Chiang Mai Highlands is one of the best-conditioned courses in the region and the best one-round treat. Most families we plan for mix one easy course with one serious course.
When is the best time for a junior golf holiday in Chiang Mai?
November to early January is the best golf weather: cool mornings, dry fairways and clear views. It is also peak season, so expect the highest prices and the hardest tee times over Christmas. The northern summer school break (July and August) lands in green season, with lower all-in rates and playable mornings but short afternoon storms. Avoid the Easter break if you can. It falls in burning season (roughly mid-January to mid-April, worst in March), when air quality can reach hazardous levels on bad days and young lungs suffer most.
Do juniors need a caddie in Chiang Mai?
Yes. Caddies are mandatory at Thai courses, one per golfer, and that includes juniors. The caddie fee paid to the course runs ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses, and the tip paid directly to the caddie is ฿400-600 per 18 holes in cash after the round. For a junior the caddie is a real asset: they read greens, carry the bag, track yardages and keep pace up. Ask the caddie master for an experienced caddie if your teen is new to the game. Talk your junior through tipping etiquette before the first round.
Should a junior bring their own clubs to Thailand?
For anything more than one or two rounds, yes. Most courses rent adult sets, but junior and youth sets are thin on the ground and quality varies, so confirm at booking if you plan to rent. A fitted junior set matters more than an adult one, because a teen's swing gets worse fast with clubs that are too long or too stiff. Check your airline's sports equipment allowance before you book flights. Bring junior-size golf gloves and soft-spike shoes too, since the course pro shops stock mostly adult sizes.
