Work Remotely and Play Golf in Thailand: A Chiang Mai Month

Work remotely and play golf in Thailand for a month: the Chiang Mai weekly rhythm, visa route, home courses, round costs and where to base yourself.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team26 Oct 202610 min read

A golf workation in Chiang Mai works best at three rounds a week: tee off around 6:30am, finish by noon, then work the afternoon and evening while UK and European clients are online. Twelve rounds over a month costs about ฿25,000 to ฿35,000 in green-season all-in fees (CMGT Golf, 2026). Before you plan anything else, check your visa, because the rules changed in September 2026.

Which visa lets me work remotely and golf in Thailand for a month?

For remote work, use the Destination Thailand Visa. Since September 2026 the visa-free entry is 30 days and covers tourism only.

On 15 September 2026 Thailand cut its visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 for 60 countries and territories, and limited it to tourism (TTG Asia, accessed 2026-10-26). Immigration can extend that stay once by 30 days, but the officer decides, and you may still have to show an onward ticket inside the first 30 days (Vialto Partners, accessed 2026-10-26).

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) was built for remote workers. It is valid for five years, allows up to 180 days per entry, and requires proof of at least THB 500,000 in funds (Royal Thai Embassy Budapest, accessed 2026-10-26). Some embassies, Budapest among them, now also ask for proof of permanent residence and a criminal record certificate, so start the paperwork at least a month before you fly.

What does a realistic weekly rhythm look like?

Three morning rounds, four full workdays and one rest day. The 6:30am tee time is what makes it all fit.

Thailand is UTC+7 all year, with no daylight saving. London is 6 to 7 hours behind, so a 2pm start in Chiang Mai lines up with a UK morning. A 6:30 tee time means an 18-hole round with a caddie and cart is usually done by 11:00, which gives you time to eat, shower and be at your desk by 13:30. Here is the week our long-stay guests usually settle into:

DayMorningAfternoon / evening
MondayGolf, 6:30 tee at a close courseWork 13:30 to 21:00
TuesdayDeep work, no golfWork, calls with Europe
WednesdayGolf, a different courseWork 13:30 to 21:00
ThursdayDeep workWork, massage after
FridayGolf, the week's 'big' courseShort workday
SaturdayRest or a night nineOff
SundayOffPlan the week, book tee times
CMGT Golf, 2026. Based on a UK/EU client schedule. US East Coast clients are 11 to 12 hours behind, which pushes calls late into the night and makes morning golf harder.

The honest downside is that this rhythm suits Europe-facing work. If your clients are in New York, their working day is your night, and a 6:30 tee time after an 11pm call is a struggle. US-facing workers do better with floodlit night golf than with early starts.

Which courses work as a "home course" near the city?

Choose your home course by drive time, not prestige. Ten to 30 minutes from your desk is what keeps three rounds a week realistic.

Chiang Mai's courses ring the valley, mostly 30 to 45 minutes out. For a month, keep the long drives for Fridays and use close courses on weekdays. Our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide ranks every layout if you want the full picture.

Rates: CMGT Golf verified facts, Apr to Oct 2026. North Hill, Star Dome and Lanna cart fees are unconfirmed, so confirm at booking. High-season rates from November are higher.

Lanna Golf Club is the easiest weekday round if you live inside the moat. North Hill gives you private-club conditioning without the long drive. Mae Jo has an orchard setting and Doi Suthep views, but its conditioning trails the other premium courses and Saturday rounds can stretch toward five hours. On Fridays, go out to Chiang Mai Highlands, which in our experience is the most consistently conditioned course in the region.

Can I play night golf after a workday?

Yes. Several Chiang Mai courses are floodlit, so you can still play on days when your mornings are busy.

Gassan Legacy charges ฿1,650 all-in for a night round, ฿300 less than its day rate (CMGT Golf, 2026). It's a flat Schmidt-Curley renovation, so your legs get a rest. Summit Green Valley is also floodlit, with water in play on most holes, but it sits at the pricier end and green conditions have drawn mixed reviews, so check recent feedback before you commit. Star Dome is an in-city nine-hole course and the best option if you only have 90 minutes. Its fee figures come from older reviews and may include a foreigner surcharge, so confirm the price on the day.

Where should I base myself for a month?

Live north or northwest of the Old City if golf comes first. Nimman is better for cafés and coworking but adds traffic to every tee time.

The airport sits only a few kilometres from the Old City, and North Hill and Lanna are the closest courses to both. Pick a base within 20 minutes of two courses you like. That keeps your weekday rounds to a short drive instead of an hour in traffic. Our guide to where to base yourself for a Chiang Mai golf trip compares neighbourhoods, and the Chiang Mai digital nomad guide covers coworking, SIM cards and long-stay rentals.

How do I get to the course with clubs every week?

Transport is the hidden cost. A pre-booked private round trip runs ฿1,400 to ฿2,500, so twelve rounds of transfers can rival your green fees.

Grab works in the city, but it's unreliable for 5:45am pickups, remote courses and full-size golf bags. At ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 per private round trip (CMGT Golf, 2026), twelve rounds of transfers could cost ฿16,800 to ฿30,000. This is why your base matters so much. A 10-minute ride to Lanna costs far less than a return trip to Gassan Khuntan, the longest transfer in the valley. Many long-stay golfers hire a driver only for the far courses and use short taxi hops for the close ones. If you stay longer than a month, renting a car with a boot big enough for a golf bag becomes worth pricing too.

What will a month of golf actually cost?

Expect ฿25,000 to ฿35,000 in green-season all-in fees for twelve rounds, plus ฿4,800 to ฿7,200 in caddie tips.

Caddies are mandatory, one per golfer. The caddie fee paid to the course is usually ฿300 to ฿400 in Chiang Mai, and it's included in the all-in rates above. The tip is separate and expected: ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, in cash at the bag drop. Over twelve rounds that adds ฿4,800 to ฿7,200. Our Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping guide explains the details.

If you arrive in November, these numbers go up. Most high-season rack rates aren't published reliably, so ask for a current quote rather than budgeting from green-season figures.

When is the best month for a golf workation?

November to January has the best weather and the most expensive tee times. Avoid March, when burning-season smoke can make outdoor play unhealthy.

Cool, dry mornings make November to February the best time to play. The trade-off is crowded tee sheets at peak rates. From around mid-January to mid-April, burning season pushes the AQI into unhealthy territory on many days, and in bad years Chiang Mai ranks among the most polluted cities in the world. If you work from an air-conditioned condo, haze still wears you down indoors. Read our burning season golf guide before booking February to April, and our best time for golf in Chiang Mai breakdown for each month.

June to October is the cheapest stretch. Mornings are usually playable, and storms tend to arrive in the afternoon, which happens to be when you're working anyway.

Does a golf package make sense for a whole month?

Not for all four weeks. A package works for the first week, then you can book local rounds yourself.

We'll be honest: once you know your home course, a month of packaged rounds costs more than booking direct a day or two ahead. A package is worth it at the start. The Lanna Signature 7-night package puts five rounds on different courses with a private driver and on-the-ground support, so you can try the valley before choosing where to play for the rest of the month. A shorter option is the Weekend Warrior 3-night package.

After that, book the far courses as day trips with a driver, and book the close ones yourself. Our booking direct vs agent guide shows where each saves money. For a custom month, the process is simple: send us your dates, rough handicap and where you plan to stay through the Chiang Mai golf holidays page. We reply with a quote covering first-week rounds, transfers to the far courses and help with tee times. Nothing is booked until you approve the plan and pay the deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work remotely in Thailand on a visa-free entry?

Since 15 September 2026 the visa-free entry for most Western passports is 30 days, and it covers tourism only, according to TTG Asia's report on the Royal Gazette change. Immigration can extend it once by up to 30 days, but the officer decides, so don't count on it. The visa built for remote workers is the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). It allows up to 180 days per entry, needs proof of THB 500,000 in funds and carries an application fee of roughly THB 10,000. Even on a DTV you can't work for Thai clients or Thai companies. Check with the Thai mission handling your application, because each one publishes its own checklist.

How many rounds of golf can I realistically play in a month while working?

Most remote workers we host settle at three rounds a week, so about 12 in a month. That leaves four or five full workdays a week and one day off with no golf. Some golfers try five rounds a week in their first week and are tired by the second. Thailand's caddie and cart system means you rarely walk far, but early starts and 30C+ heat still add up. Plan on three. If you have spare energy, add a floodlit night nine at Gassan Legacy or Star Dome instead of a fourth full morning round.

What does a month of golf in Chiang Mai cost?

Green fees are the biggest variable. At green-season all-in rates (Apr to Oct 2026) the local courses run from ฿1,650 for a night round at Gassan Legacy to ฿3,400 at Chiang Mai Highlands, including caddie and cart (CMGT Golf, 2026). Twelve rounds across mixed courses comes to roughly ฿25,000 to ฿35,000 before tips. Add ฿400 to ฿600 per round in caddie tips plus your transport. High-season (Nov to Mar) prices are higher and vary by course, so confirm at booking. Accommodation and food are separate and depend on where you base yourself.

What is the best month for a golf workation in Chiang Mai?

November, December and January suit most people best. Mornings are cool, the air is clear and rain is rare, but this is peak season, so tee times are harder to get and prices are higher. Avoid February to April if air quality matters to you. Burning-season haze usually peaks in March, and on the worst days PM2.5 readings climb to levels that make outdoor exercise unhealthy. June to October costs less and courses are lush, but expect short afternoon storms, heaviest in September and October. If you're booking now, a December or January month is the best bet.

Should I book a golf package or book each round myself for a month?

For a full month, book most rounds yourself. A package works best in your first week, when you don't yet know the courses, the drive times or which caddie desk to call. After that, booking your local course direct a day or two ahead is usually cheaper and gives you more flexibility. A package still earns its keep for day trips to the far courses, like Gassan Khuntan or Alpine, where a private driver and a held tee time save you hassle. We can quote a first-week package plus ad-hoc transfers for the rest of the month.
