Best time of year for golf in Chiang Mai

When to golf in Chiang Mai, month by month: the cool-dry peak, the green-season value window, and the burning-season haze you need to plan around.

The best time for golf in Chiang Mai is November to February: cool, dry mornings between 15 and 22C, clear skies and the best course conditions of the year. The green season from June to October is the value window, humid but cheap with playable mornings. The one period to plan around is burning season, roughly mid-January to mid-April, when haze can turn the air unhealthy and hide the mountains. Here is the year, month by month, from an operator who books rounds through all of it. For the wider trip, see our golf in Chiang Mai guide.

Why does timing matter more in Chiang Mai than at the coast?

Because the climate is the reason to come north, and it swings hard by season. Chiang Mai sits at around 310 metres, so the cool season is genuinely cool and the mountain scenery is a headline draw, but that same valley traps smoke in spring.

At a beach destination the weather is fairly steady and the main variable is rain. In Chiang Mai the difference between a crisp 18C December morning with clear views of Doi Suthep and a hazy 36C March round is night and day. Getting the month right is the single biggest decision in planning a northern golf trip.

When is the peak season, and is it worth it?

November to February. Cool, dry, clear and the best conditions of the year, but also the busiest and priciest, so book ahead. For most golfers this window is worth the premium.

In peak season, tee off around 7am while it is still cool. Weekend slots at Chiang Mai Highlands and Alpine go first, so a group of four should lock dates several weeks out. This is where a local operator earns its keep, holding tee-time blocks that individual booking loses.

How bad is burning season, really?

Bad enough to plan around. From mid-January to mid-April, peaking in March, farm and forest burning traps smoke in the valley and air quality can turn genuinely unhealthy. This is the honest weak point of golf in Chiang Mai, and we would rather you hear it from us.

If your dates are fixed in March and you are sensitive to air quality, the honest advice is to golf on the coast instead, at Hua Hin or Phuket, which the northern haze does not reach. We would rather point you south for a good trip than sell you a hazy one.

Is the green season a good time to golf?

Yes, if you want value and do not mind an early alarm. June to October brings the cheapest fees and lush fairways, with humid afternoons and short, heavy storms. Mornings are usually clear enough to play.

The rain here is usually a sharp afternoon downpour rather than an all-day soak, so a morning tee time gets most groups a full dry round. Keep the schedule flexible, and enjoy the fact that the courses are quiet and the fairways are at their greenest. Value-hunters can pair the green season with the cheaper courses in our green fee comparison.

What about the hot season between the rains and the cool?

April to May is hot, often above 35C, and the tail of April still carries haze. It is the least comfortable golf window of the year.

If you do play in the hot months, go at dawn, drink more water than you think you need, and consider a night round at a floodlit course like Summit Green Valley to skip the midday sun entirely.

How does the season change what a trip costs?

Peak season means full rates and the need to book early; the green season can cut green fees by a third or more. Timing is a budget lever, not just a comfort one.

If your priority is weather, pay the peak premium in December or January. If your priority is value, take the green season and an early tee time. Our cost guide breaks down the full trip budget by season.

When should you book?

Several weeks ahead for peak-season weekends, a week or so for peak weekdays, and short-notice is fine in the green season. Groups should always book earlier to keep a continuous block.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to golf in Chiang Mai?

December and January are the best months. Mornings on the highland courses can be 15 to 22C, the air is dry and clear, the mountain views are at their best and there is almost no rain. February is nearly as good but can start to haze up late in the month. The trade-off is that this is peak season, so it is the busiest and priciest time and weekend tee times at the premium courses sell out weeks ahead.

When is burning season in Chiang Mai?

Burning season runs from roughly mid-January to mid-April and peaks in March, when agricultural and forest burning traps smoke in the valley. Air quality can turn unhealthy for days at a time. In 2026 the PM2.5 reading passed 300 on the worst April days and Chiang Mai briefly ranked among the most polluted cities in the world. If you are sensitive to air quality, avoid March, check a live index before you travel, or golf on the coast instead.

Can you golf in Chiang Mai during the rainy season?

Yes, and it is the best-value time to go. From June to October the green season brings humidity and short, heavy afternoon storms, but mornings are usually clear enough to play and the fairways are lush. Green fees drop sharply, often 20 to 40 percent below peak. Tee off early to beat the afternoon rain, and keep the schedule flexible. September and October see the heaviest rain.

How far ahead should you book Chiang Mai golf?

For peak-season weekends from November to February, book several weeks ahead, since weekend tee times at premium courses like Highlands and Alpine sell out first. Weekday tee times in peak season are easier and often available a week or so out. In the green season you can usually book at short notice. Groups of four or more should book earlier to secure a continuous block, which is where a local operator's held tee times help.
