An Easter golf holiday in Chiang Mai works, but it is the hardest time of our year: Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March, at the height of burning season, with highs of 35C and AQI readings past 200. Only book it with dawn tee times and a flexible plan. If you can, go in the second week of the school holidays, after green-season rates start on 1 April.
Is Easter a good time for a golf holiday in Chiang Mai?
You can play, but it is not ideal. Easter falls in Chiang Mai's hot, smoky shoulder season, so you trade the best conditions for school-holiday timing and cheaper April rates.
We run golf trips here year-round, and the honest ranking is simple. November to February is the peak: cool mornings, dry air, clear mountain views. By late March the valley is hot and the haze from crop and forest burning is at its worst. Families tied to a school calendar do not get to pick November, so the real question is how to make Easter work.
It can work. The courses are open, tee sheets are far quieter than in January, and the fairways are at their driest before the May rains, so the ball runs a long way. What you give up is air quality, comfort after 10am, and the long views of Doi Suthep that make Chiang Mai golf special. For the full year, see our guide to the best time for golf in Chiang Mai.
When does Easter 2027 fall against Chiang Mai's golf seasons?
Good Friday is 26 March 2027, and most English schools break from 26 March to 9 April. That straddles the 31 March switch from high to green season.
Butlins' 2027 school holiday listing (accessed 2026-10-21) gives Friday 26 March to Friday 9 April for most schools in England. Chiang Mai high season runs 1 November to 31 March, and green season starts on 1 April. So a two-week Easter trip splits neatly in half: week one at high-season prices, week two at green-season prices, with the same heat and smoke in both.
| Window (2027) | Rate season | Heat | Air quality risk | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22 to 25 March | High season | Hot, 35C possible | Peak burning season | Hardest week, skip if you can |
| 26 to 31 March (Easter weekend) | High season | Hot, 35C possible | Peak burning season | Dawn tee times only |
| 1 to 9 April (holiday week two) | Green season | Hot, 35C+ | Still high, eases toward mid-April | Best value of the Easter window |
| 13 to 15 April (Songkran) | Green season | Hot | Usually easing | Festive, slower transfers |
How bad is the air quality in Chiang Mai over Easter?
Often bad. On 1 April 2026 Chiang Mai ranked as the world's most polluted major city for a fourth straight day, with an IQAir AQI of 235.
Burning season runs from about mid-January to mid-April and is usually worst in March. Thairath reported on 1 April 2026 (accessed 2026-10-21) that Chiang Mai municipality read AQI 235 at 08:00. It also reported that the Pollution Control Department's 24-hour PM2.5 average at the Chiang Dao station reached 286 µg/m³. On 2 April 2026 the city still ranked second-worst in the world. Some days are clearer, but you cannot plan for them a month ahead.
How hot is Chiang Mai golf in late March and April?
Expect 35C or more by late morning. A 7am tee time finishes before the worst heat. A 10am start means playing the back nine in full sun.
The hot season runs from March to May. Early mornings are bearable, and a round starting at first light is usually done by 11:30. After that, the sun and heat build fast on exposed fairways. Carts help, and your caddie will carry an umbrella and iced towels if you ask. Even so, four hours in 35C is hard work for anyone not used to it.
For juniors and older golfers, nine holes at dawn plus a swim beats eighteen holes that end at 1pm. Most clubhouses will sell drinks at the turn, but bring electrolytes from a 7-Eleven the night before so you are not relying on the halfway hut. Our beat the heat golf guide has the hydration and kit list, and the best tee times guide shows which slots go first.
Does Songkran clash with an Easter golf break?
Not for most English families in 2027. Songkran runs from 13 to 15 April 2027, after most English Easter holidays end on 9 April.
OfficeHolidays (accessed 2026-10-21) lists Songkran as Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April 2027, and notes that the North celebrates it more widely and for longer. Scottish, Welsh and some independent school terms differ, so a few families will overlap.
If you do, expect water fights around the Old City moat, slow traffic and a soaked walk to dinner. It is fun, but it makes early transfers less predictable. Stay away from the moat (our neighbourhood guide for golf trips helps), and when you book, check that caddies and tee times are available on the holiday days.
Which Chiang Mai courses suit an Easter golf break?
Choose courses with short transfers and good conditioning: North Hill and Highlands by day, or floodlit Gassan Legacy or Summit Green Valley in the evening once the heat breaks.
In hot, hazy weeks, less time in the van and less time on a slow course both matter. Here is how we rank the Chiang Mai golf courses for an Easter trip.
| Course | Why it works at Easter | Green-season all-in (2026) | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chiang Mai Highlands | Consistently well presented, good spa for the afternoon | ฿3,400 | Top-tier price |
| Alpine Golf Resort | Championship-length layout, a proper test | ฿3,700 | Long from the back tees in 35C |
| North Hill City | Short drive from the city, private-club feel | Quote on request | Book 1 to 2 days ahead |
| Gassan Legacy | Floodlit, the flattest Gassan layout | ฿1,950 day, ฿1,650 night | 30 to 45 min to Lamphun |
| Summit Green Valley | Floodlit night golf | Quote on request | Green condition varies, ask us first |
| Mae Jo | About 20 min from the city | About ฿2,850 agent rate | Weaker conditioning, slow pace |
Chiang Mai Highlands is our first pick: it is usually the best-presented course in the valley in dry weather, and the spa fills a smoky afternoon. North Hill is the easy round for your arrival day. For an evening session, Gassan Legacy and Summit Green Valley are floodlit. Night golf avoids the heat, but not the haze. We are wary of Mae Jo at Easter, because a five-hour round in 35C makes for a long morning.
What does an Easter round cost in Chiang Mai?
Before 1 April you pay high-season rates. After that, 2026 green-season all-in rounds cost ฿1,650 to ฿3,700, so week two of the holidays is cheaper.
Courses rarely publish high-season rack rates in a form you can rely on, so we quote them for each trip rather than print a number. Expect them to sit noticeably above the green-season figures. From 1 April the green-season all-in rates apply. In 2026 they were ฿3,700 at Alpine, ฿3,400 at Highlands and ฿1,950 at Gassan Panorama (CMGT Golf, 2026). If your group can choose which week plays the premium courses, put Highlands and Alpine after 1 April and use week one for cheaper rounds.
On top of that, budget for the caddie tip, paid in cash to your caddie after the round. ฿400 to ฿600 per eighteen holes is normal. The caddie fee itself, ฿300 to ฿400 at most Chiang Mai courses, is already included in those all-in figures. Our cart and caddie fees guide breaks it down course by course.
How should we plan an Easter golf day around heat and smoke?
Tee off at first light, finish by noon and check the AQI the night before. Spend the afternoon indoors with a spa, a massage or a cooking class.
A typical Easter golf day we plan looks like this:
- 05:45 pickup, N95 on for the transfer
- 06:30 first tee
- 11:30 round done, lunch inside the clubhouse
- 13:00 back at the hotel, purifier on
- 15:00 massage or spa
- 19:00 dinner
Over a four-round week, a Thai massage after the round does more for your golf than any extra range session. Non-golfers can find indoor options in our family activities guide.
Is a golf package worth it for an Easter break?
For three or more rounds, usually yes. With a package, we can move your tee times and transfers when the AQI spikes. You lose that flexibility when you book direct.
A Chiang Mai golf package covers green fees, caddie fees, carts, hotel, a private driver and airport transfers, plus someone on the ground. That last part matters most at Easter. A private round trip to a course costs roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 if you arrange it yourself. Grab is also risky for a 05:45 pickup with a golf bag.
For a short Easter trip, Weekend Warrior (3 nights, 3 rounds) or Northern Value (4 nights, 3 rounds) leave room for a spare day. Families splitting their time between golf and sightseeing tend to like Culture & Golf. The honest exception: if you only want one round, book the course direct, as our direct vs agent guide explains.
What are the better alternatives to an Easter golf break in Chiang Mai?
If your dates are flexible, February half-term and October half-term are both better than Easter in Chiang Mai. If Easter is fixed, Hua Hin and Phuket escape most of the smoke.
February half-term is cooler and drier, though haze can build late in the month. October half-term is green season: lush courses, the cheapest rates, and afternoon storms that usually leave mornings playable. If your family can only travel at Easter and air quality is a dealbreaker, consider Hua Hin and Phuket in the south, which are largely unaffected by northern burning season. We would rather tell you that than sell you a smoky week.
If Chiang Mai at Easter still suits you, send us your dates and handicaps through our golf holiday enquiry page. We will quote your trip, showing which rounds fall on high-season rates and which on green-season rates. You confirm with a deposit.

Is Easter a good time for a golf holiday in Chiang Mai?
You can play golf at Easter, but it is not the best time to go. Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March, during the hot season and the worst of burning season. Expect highs of 35C or more and AQI readings that can pass 200 on bad days. On 1 April 2026 Chiang Mai ranked as the world's most polluted major city for a fourth day running. If school holidays fix your dates, Easter still works with dawn tee times, short transfers and a plan to swap days when the air is poor. If your dates are flexible, November to February is far better for golf.
When do green-season golf rates start in Chiang Mai?
Chiang Mai courses switch from high season to green season on 1 April, and green season runs to 31 October. For an Easter 2027 trip, rounds played up to 31 March cost high-season rates and rounds from 1 April onward cost green-season rates. On 2026 green-season rate cards an all-in round (green fee, caddie fee and cart) ran from ฿1,650 for night golf at Gassan Legacy to ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). The 2027 rate cards are not out yet, so confirm at booking.
Does Songkran clash with the Easter school holidays in 2027?
For most families in England, no. Songkran's official public holidays are 13 to 15 April 2027, and most English Easter school holidays run from 26 March to 9 April 2027, so they finish before the water festival starts. Term dates vary by council and by country within the UK, so check your own school calendar. If your trip does overlap, expect water fights around the Old City moat, slower traffic and a festive city. Northern Thailand celebrates Songkran more widely and for longer than the official dates, so build in extra transfer time.
How do I avoid the smoke on an Easter golf trip to Chiang Mai?
You cannot avoid it fully, but you can cut your exposure. Check the IQAir or aqicn reading the night before and again at dawn. Book the earliest tee time available, wear a fitted N95 for the transfer, and stay indoors with an air purifier in the afternoon. Keep one spare day in the plan so you can swap out a bad-air day. If anyone in your group has asthma or a heart or lung condition, think hard before booking March or early April. Hua Hin and Phuket in the south are largely unaffected by northern burning season.
Is a golf package worth it for an Easter break in Chiang Mai?
For three or more rounds, it usually is. A package covers green fees, caddie fees, carts, hotel, a private driver and airport transfers, plus someone on the ground who can move a tee time when the AQI spikes. If you book each course yourself, you arrange every early pickup alone, and a private round trip to a course costs roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500. For a single round, booking the course direct can be cheaper, and we will tell you so. CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven: tell us your dates and we send a quote, then confirm with a deposit.
