A Thai massage after each round is the best-value recovery tool on a Chiang Mai golf trip: about ฿250-350 for an hour at a standard city shop, booked for the afternoon after you play, never the morning before. For roughly what one day of club rental costs, you can have four or five massages. Below: which style to choose, when to book it, and where it falls down.
How much does a Thai massage cost in Chiang Mai?
A one-hour traditional Thai massage costs about ฿250-350 at a standard shop in central Chiang Mai, and ฿800 or more at hotel and resort spas.
Chiang Mai is one of the cheapest places in Thailand for a good massage. A 2026 Chiang Mai massage guide (accessed 2026-09-29) lists ฿250-350 per hour for standard city-centre shops, ฿150-250 at basic places, ฿350-800 at mid-range chains and more than ฿800 at high-end spas. Prices are usually posted on a board outside the shop. If they are not, ask before you go in.
A golfer playing four rounds and getting a massage after each spends roughly ฿1,000-1,400 on recovery at shop prices. Spend the same at a resort spa and you might get one treatment. Resort spas are nicer places to sit. The hands are often no better.
Which massage style suits a golfer's body?
Traditional Thai massage for stiffness, oil massage for soreness, foot reflexology for a short reset after a hot walk. Most golfers need the first one.
A golf swing loads the lead hip, the lower back, the obliques and the trail shoulder. Traditional Thai massage (nuad Thai) works those areas with pressure along energy lines plus assisted stretches. The therapist uses hands, forearms, knees and feet, and you stay in loose cotton clothing they provide. It is the practice UNESCO listed as intangible cultural heritage in December 2019, as the Tourism Authority of Thailand reported (accessed 2026-09-29).
| Style | Best for | Pressure | Typical length | When on a golf trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional Thai (nuad Thai) | Tight hips, back, hamstrings | Firm, with stretches | 60-120 min | Afternoon after a round |
| Oil massage | Sore muscles after 2-3 rounds | Light to medium | 60-90 min | Evening, mid-trip |
| Herbal compress (luk pra kob) | Stiff back and shoulders | Warm, gentle | 60-90 min | Rest day |
| Foot reflexology | Tired feet after walking in heat | Medium on feet | 30-60 min | Evening before a round |
| Neck and shoulder | Trail-shoulder tightness | Medium | 30 min | Any evening |
Two Thai words help. "Bao bao" means softer. "Nak nak" means firmer. Therapists expect you to use them, and a good one will check in during the first ten minutes. If a stretch pulls on your trail shoulder or lower back in a way that feels wrong, say so straight away.
Should I book a massage before or after a round?
After. A deep Thai massage leaves muscles loose and sometimes tender for a few hours, which works against you on the first tee.
Our standard day for a guest who wants recovery built in:
- 06:30. Hotel pickup.
- 07:30. Tee off, before the heat builds.
- 12:30. Finish, lunch at the clubhouse.
- 14:30. Back at the hotel, shower, water.
- 16:00. 60 to 90-minute Thai massage in town.
- 18:30. Dinner.
Early tee times matter for other reasons too, as our guide to the best tee times in Chiang Mai explains. They also leave the whole afternoon free for a massage and a nap.
Where do golfers get a massage in Chiang Mai?
Most of our guests use a city shop near their hotel. Some choose the social-enterprise centres that train and employ women from the Chiang Mai women's prison program.
The best-known is the Chiang Mai Women's Prison Massage Centre in the Old City. Its therapists complete at least 300 hours of certified training, and it charges roughly ฿200-300 an hour for traditional Thai massage, according to Chiang Mai Ambassador (accessed 2026-09-29). Lila Thai Massage, founded by a former prison director to employ women after release, has several branches in the Old City. Both get busy, especially at weekends, so book in the morning for an afternoon slot.
For somewhere smarter, our best spas in Chiang Mai guide covers the mid-range and premium options. Expect to pay three or four times the shop price there.
Can I get a massage at the golf course itself?
Only at a few resort courses. Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa has the strongest spa of any course we book. Most others offer showers and a clubhouse.
Highlands is also one of the best-conditioned courses in the region, a Lee Schmidt design set in the hills east of the city. A round there with a spa treatment afterwards is the easiest way to combine golf and massage in one day. The trade-off is price. Resort spa menus cost well above city-shop rates and change by season, so confirm current treatment prices with the resort before you go.
At courses like Alpine Golf Resort or Royal Chiang Mai, play, eat lunch and have the massage back in town. You can compare every venue's facilities in the Chiang Mai golf course directory.
How do I fit massage into a multi-round trip?
Book a massage after every round, and make the rest day the long one. On a four-round trip that means shorter sessions on golf days plus one 90 to 120-minute treatment on the rest day.
Playing back-to-back is where recovery pays off. Alpine plays well over 7,000 yards from the back tees and is one of the longest tests in the north. Two long courses on consecutive days, with a caddie walking beside your cart in the heat, will find any stiffness in your lower back.
A simple pattern we use:
- Round 1 day: 60-minute Thai massage, medium pressure.
- Round 2 day: 60-minute oil massage if you are sore, Thai if you are just stiff.
- Rest day: 90 to 120-minute Thai or herbal compress treatment, no time limit.
- Round 3 and 4 days: 30 to 60-minute foot or shoulder massage.
Our 4-day Chiang Mai golf itinerary shows where the rest day fits. The Culture & Golf package plays 3 rounds over 5 nights and leaves room for massage and temples between rounds.
Does massage help with the heat as well?
Only partly. Massage eases tight muscles, but it will not replace water, shade and early tee times. Even in the cool season, Chiang Mai afternoons are often around 28-32C.
Late-morning heat drains you more than the golf does. Cool-season mornings on the hill courses are pleasant, but temperatures climb fast after 10:00, and from March to May afternoons often pass 35C. If you are dehydrated, a firm massage can leave you light-headed. Drink a litre of water before you lie down.
The golf fitness and heat prep guide covers hydration and warm-ups. For hot-month tactics, see beating the heat on a Chiang Mai golf trip.
When is massage not the right call?
If you have an injury, a disc problem or a recent strain, skip deep Thai massage. It uses strong spinal pressure and stretches that shop therapists cannot safely adapt.
Therapists are trained, but they are not physiotherapists. Point to any problem area before you start and ask for oil massage with light pressure if you are unsure. If a swing injury flares up mid-trip, see a doctor before you book another round or another massage.
Also be honest about the season. From roughly February to April, burning-season haze often pushes Chiang Mai's air quality into unhealthy readings, and the worst days are far higher. A massage cannot fix bad air. If your dates fall in March, read our burning season golf guide first.
Is it worth bundling massage into a golf package?
Usually not. City massages are cheap and easy to book yourself. What a package gives you is a daily schedule with free afternoons and a driver back to town.
We are an enquiry-driven operator. You tell us your dates, we send a quote, and the booking is confirmed with a deposit. We do not sell instant bookings. A Chiang Mai golf package covers green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver and airport transfers. Recovery works because tee times are early and the driver has you back at the hotel by mid-afternoon. If you want a Highlands spa session or a massage booked at the hotel, tell us when you enquire and we will build it into the schedule.
For a single round and a massage, booking both yourself is cheaper. For three or more rounds, the Highlands Classic plays 4 rounds over 5 nights, and the Northern Value plays 3 rounds over 4 nights. Both leave room for recovery days.

How much does a Thai massage cost in Chiang Mai?
A standard one-hour Thai massage at an ordinary shop in central Chiang Mai costs about ฿250-350. Basic places charge less, mid-range chains charge ฿350-800 an hour, and hotel or resort spas usually charge ฿800 or more. The Women's Prison Massage Centre and Lila Thai are well-known social-enterprise options at roughly ฿200-300 an hour. At shop prices, a massage after every round adds only a small amount to the trip. Always confirm the price before you lie down.
Should I get a massage before or after a round of golf?
After. Book a deep Thai massage for the afternoon or evening after you play, not the morning of a round. Strong pressure and assisted stretching can leave your muscles loose and a little tender for a few hours, and that is not what you want on the first tee. If you want something before golf, keep it light: a 30-minute foot or shoulder massage the evening before is fine. Our usual pattern is golf in the morning, lunch at the clubhouse, back at the hotel by mid-afternoon, and a 60 to 90-minute massage before dinner.
Which massage style is best for golfers?
Traditional Thai massage (nuad Thai) suits most golfers because it combines pressure with assisted stretches for the hips, hamstrings, lower back and shoulders, which are the areas a golf swing loads. If you are stiff but not sore, pick it. If your muscles are already sore after two or three rounds, an oil massage or a herbal compress (luk pra kob) is gentler. Foot reflexology is a good short option after a long walk in the heat. Tell the therapist 'bao bao' for softer or 'nak nak' for firmer pressure.
Can I get a massage at the golf course in Chiang Mai?
Some resort courses have spa facilities. Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa has the strongest on-site spa among the courses we book. Other courses offer little more than showers and a clubhouse. Resort spa menus cost far more than a city shop, so most of our guests get massages in town. Check treatment prices and opening times with the resort, as they change. If an on-site treatment is part of the plan, tell us when you enquire so the schedule allows for it.
Is Thai massage safe if I have a golf injury?
Tell the therapist about any injury before you start, and point to where it is. Traditional Thai massage includes strong stretches and pressure along the spine, which is not right for a disc problem, a recent strain or a joint replacement. In those cases, ask for oil massage with light pressure or skip the massage. Shop therapists are trained, but they are not physiotherapists and cannot diagnose. If a swing injury flares up during your trip, see a doctor at a Chiang Mai hospital before you book more rounds or treatments.
