Thai Public Holidays and Golf: How Dates Hit Your Bookings

Thai public holidays fill Chiang Mai golf courses, trigger alcohol sales bans and tighten tee times. Our 2026 date list and how we plan rounds around each one.

Thai public holidays rarely close Chiang Mai golf courses, but they do three things to your trip: they fill morning tee times, they can switch green fees to weekend rates, and the Buddhist holy days ban most alcohol sales. The 2026 Bank of Thailand list carried 19 holidays. Songkran, New Year and the Yi Peng lantern week matter most for golfers.

Do Thai public holidays close golf courses in Chiang Mai?

No. Courses stay open on every public holiday we plan around. Holidays bring extra Thai golfers, so the real effect is a busier tee sheet.

Thai golfers play on their days off, and a long weekend sends Bangkok groups north on the short flight. That means a holiday Monday at Alpine Golf Resort or Chiang Mai Highlands plays more like a Saturday than a weekday. Expect fuller fairways, a slower pace behind local four-balls, and less choice of early times.

Holidays that fall midweek have a smaller effect than long weekends. A Tuesday holiday like Makha Bucha (3 March 2026) adds local play for the day. A Saturday-to-Wednesday run like Songkran fills courses for most of the week.

Course character matters here too. The resort-style layouts closest to town, such as Highlands and Gassan Legacy, feel the holiday rush first because they are the easiest to reach from the city. If you want a quieter holiday round, tell us when you enquire through our Chiang Mai golf page and we will suggest the course that suits the date.

Which Thai public holidays fall in 2026, and which hit golf?

The 2026 list carried 19 bank holidays. About eight make long weekends or multi-day runs, and those are the dates when tee times and hotels get tight.

The dates below come from the Bank of Thailand list, as published by Human Resources Online (accessed 2026-10-21). The golf-impact column is our own read from booking rounds on the ground (CMGT Golf, 2026).

Buddhist holy days follow the lunar calendar, so their dates move every year. The Cabinet can also add bridge holidays at short notice. Check the 2027 list when it is published before you lock flights.

How do Buddhist holidays affect the 19th hole?

Thailand bans most alcohol sales on the major Buddhist holy days, and that usually includes the clubhouse restaurant. Bring a soft-drink plan.

In 2026 the bans were reported clearly. Visakha Bucha (31 May) carried a 24-hour nationwide ban from midnight to midnight, per Nation Thailand (accessed 2026-10-21). Asalha Bucha and Buddhist Lent Day ran a two-day ban on 29 and 30 July, with police inspection teams checking nationwide, per Nation Thailand (accessed 2026-10-21).

The ban covers shops, convenience stores and ordinary restaurants. Exemptions cover international airport terminals, licensed entertainment venues and designated tourist zones. Drinking is not illegal, only selling. So a cold beer on the terrace after your round is off for the day. A beer in your villa from yesterday's shop run is fine.

Is Songkran a good week for a Chiang Mai golf trip?

It can work, but it is the hardest week of the year to run smoothly. Early tee times are fine. Getting through town is the problem.

The Songkran public holiday ran 13-15 April 2026, and Chiang Mai stretches the water festival across several days either side. The Old City moat becomes the centre of a city-wide water fight. Pickup trucks with water barrels block lanes, and an open taxi or tuk-tuk ride to the course can leave your bag soaked before the first tee.

The trade-offs are honest ones:

  • Heat. Mid-April is the hot season. 35C and up is common by late morning.
  • Haze. Burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April, and air quality on bad days can be well into the unhealthy range. See our burning season golf guide before booking any April dates.
  • Hotels. Room rates climb and minimum stays appear.
  • Courses. Thai golfers on their longest break of the year fill mornings.

If Songkran is the only week you can travel, take the earliest tee time, use a private driver who avoids the moat roads, and keep afternoons for the pool. Package trips fold that driver in. Booking each round alone means arranging it yourself.

Does Loy Krathong and Yi Peng week affect golf?

Yes, mainly through hotels and traffic. It is not a national public holiday, but Chiang Mai fills up fast for the lantern festival.

Yi Peng falls around 24-25 November 2026, per Midnight Blue Elephant (accessed 2026-10-21). Sources differ by a day on the exact Loy Krathong date, so confirm once the city publishes its programme. It lands at the start of high season, when cool, dry mornings make it one of the best stretches of the year for golf.

The courses themselves run close to normal. The pressure is on rooms near the Old City and the river, and on evening traffic around the Nawarat Bridge and Tha Phae Gate. Our advice: play mornings, be back at the hotel by mid-afternoon, and book rooms early. For timing across the whole year, our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide compares every month.

How far ahead should I book around a holiday?

Book fixed long-weekend dates well before you would book a normal week. Midweek single holidays need only a little extra lead time.

We do not publish exact lead times because they shift with each season and course. The pattern is consistent, though. High-season long weekends (5-7 December, the New Year run, and Makha Bucha in years when it touches a weekend) need the most notice. Green-season holidays like Labour Day are usually bookable at shorter notice. Our booking lead time by season guide breaks this down month by month.

The booking steps are simple. Send us your travel dates and group size, we check them against the holiday calendar, then we request tee times course by course and come back with a quote. Nothing is confirmed until the course confirms the slot, which is why holiday dates need the extra lead time.

Holiday mornings also make the best tee time choice more important. An early start beats the Bangkok groups out of the car park.

Do green fees go up on public holidays?

Often, yes. Many Thai courses charge their weekend rate on public holidays. The exact gap varies by course and season, so confirm when you enquire.

We do not quote one holiday surcharge because there is no single number. For reference, the green-season all-in rates we work with in 2026 are ฿3,400 at Highlands (฿2,250 green + ฿400 caddie + ฿750 cart) and ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). Gassan Legacy runs ฿1,950 by day and ฿1,650 at night, all-in.

The caddie tip does not change on holidays. Plan roughly ฿400-600 per 18 holes, handed over in cash at the end of the round. If you want a cheaper option over a busy holiday, the floodlit night rounds at Gassan Legacy and Summit Green Valley dodge both the heat and the morning rush.

Does a golf package help over a holiday week?

On a holiday week a package saves you more hassle than money. The value is held tee times, a private driver and one contact when plans change.

Booking direct works well for one or two rounds on a quiet weekday. Over Songkran or New Year it gets harder. You are chasing tee times course by course, finding transport for early starts when ride-hailing apps can be patchy, and planning around ban days on your own. A pre-booked private round trip to a course runs about ฿1,400-2,500 if you arrange it separately, and most courses sit within a 20 to 60 minute drive of the city.

An all-in package covers green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support. For a holiday week that suits a shorter trip, the Weekend Warrior 3-night package covers three rounds. Golfers who want temples and festivals alongside golf over Loy Krathong usually pick Culture & Golf.

The honest caveat: if you only play one round, booking direct can be cheaper, holiday or not. Tell us your dates on our Chiang Mai golf page and we will flag any holiday clashes before we quote.

Which holiday dates are easiest for golf?

Midweek single holidays in green season are the easiest. They add a little local play and nothing else.

Constitution Day (10 December) and Makha Bucha in a midweek year are mild. King Bhumibol Memorial Day (13 October) falls in the late rainy season, when mornings are usually playable and rates are lower. The hardest dates are the long weekends in high season, plus Songkran.

If your dates are flexible, shift a day either side of a long weekend. Arriving the Tuesday after a holiday Monday often means the Bangkok groups have flown home and the tee sheet has opened up again.

Frequently asked questions

Are Chiang Mai golf courses open on Thai public holidays?

Yes. Chiang Mai courses stay open on public holidays, including Songkran, New Year and the Buddhist holy days. Holidays bring more Thai and Bangkok golfers to the courses, not fewer, so the question is how busy they get, not whether they open. Morning tee times fill first on long weekends like the Songkran break (Saturday 11 to Wednesday 15 April 2026) and the Chakri Day weekend. Some courses charge their weekend rate on public holidays, so confirm the price for your exact date when you enquire. If your dates over a long weekend are fixed, book well ahead and take the earliest tee time you can get.

Can I buy a beer at the clubhouse on a Buddhist holiday?

Usually not. Thailand bans most alcohol sales on major Buddhist holy days. In 2026 that included a 24-hour ban on Visakha Bucha (31 May) and a two-day ban on Asalha Bucha and Buddhist Lent Day (29-30 July), according to Nation Thailand. The ban covers shops, convenience stores and ordinary restaurants, which includes most clubhouse restaurants. Licensed entertainment venues, international airport terminals and designated tourist zones are exempt. Drinking in private is legal; only selling is banned. Plan a soft-drink 19th hole on those days and save the celebration for the next evening.

Is Songkran a good time for a golf trip to Chiang Mai?

It works if you plan for it, but it is not our first pick. The Songkran public holiday ran 13-15 April 2026, and Chiang Mai hosts one of Thailand's biggest water festivals, with Old City streets turned into water fights for days. The courses stay open, and early tee times are the best part of the day. The downsides are real: transfers through town get slow and wet, hotel prices climb, it is often 35C and up, and mid-April can still overlap burning-season haze. A private driver who knows the back roads makes the biggest difference that week.

Do Thai public holidays change green fees?

They can. Many Thai courses price public holidays at their weekend rate rather than the weekday rate, and published weekday and weekend splits change each season. We do not quote a fixed holiday surcharge because it varies course by course and year to year. For reference, the green-season all-in rate at Chiang Mai Highlands is ฿3,400 and at Alpine is ฿3,700 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Ask for the price of your exact date when you enquire, especially for the Songkran week and the Christmas to New Year run.

Which Thai holidays should golfers plan around most?

Four matter most for golfers. Songkran (13-15 April) brings the biggest crowds and traffic. New Year (31 December to 1 January) adds Thai holiday golfers on top of high-season visitors. Loy Krathong and Yi Peng (around 24-25 November 2026) fill Chiang Mai hotels, although Yi Peng is a local festival rather than a national public holiday. The Buddhist holy days bring alcohol sales bans. Everything else, like Constitution Day or Chulalongkorn Day, mostly just means a busier morning on the tee sheet.
