For Chiang Mai golf, book 6 to 10 weeks ahead for mid-December to February, 3 to 6 weeks for November and early December, and only days to two weeks for May to October. Those are our planning ranges from running trips on the ground (CMGT Golf, 2026). Peak season is short and crowded. The rest of the year rewards booking late, and the prices are lower too.
How far ahead should I book Chiang Mai golf in each month?
Peak months need 6 to 10 weeks for groups, shoulder months 3 to 6 weeks, and the green season usually needs under two weeks.
Chiang Mai has two pricing seasons: high season from 1 November to 31 March, and green season from 1 April to 31 October. Demand inside high season is not flat, though. The squeeze sits between mid-December and the end of February. Golfasian, a long-running Thai golf operator, described hotels and courses as "largely fully booked from mid-December through February" in its Chiang Mai golf news report (accessed 2026-10-03). That matches what we see every winter.
Group size matters as much as the month. A couple can usually slot into a weekday morning at short notice even in January. A group of eight needs two consecutive tee times on the same morning, plus four rooms in one hotel, and that combination is what runs out first.
| Months | Demand | Our suggested lead time | Weather | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nov to early Dec | Building | 3 to 6 weeks | Cool, dry, clear | Best balance of weather and availability |
| Mid-Dec to Feb | Peak | 6 to 10 weeks (groups), 4 to 6 weeks (pairs) | Coolest and driest, Jan lows near 15C | Book early, especially holiday weeks |
| Mar to mid-Apr | Light | 1 to 2 weeks, keep flexible | Hot, burning-season smoke | Avoid March if you can |
| May to Oct | Low | Days to 2 weeks | Humid, afternoon storms | Cheapest, morning tee times only |
Why do December to February tee times sell out first?
Cool, dry weather and European winter holidays stack into one ten-week window, and the region's premium courses have limited early morning slots.
January is Chiang Mai's coolest and driest month, with average lows near 15C and roughly 0.2 inches of rain, per WeatherSpark's Chiang Mai climate data (accessed 2026-10-03). That is ideal golf weather, and every tour operator knows it.
The pressure points are predictable:
- Christmas to New Year. Hotels fill fastest here, and many raise minimum stays.
- Chinese New Year (late January or February, depending on the year). Regional visitor numbers spike.
- Weekend mornings at premium courses. Everyone wants the 7:00 tee time.
The courses that go first are Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa, Alpine Golf Resort and Summit Green Valley. All three sit at the top of the local price range in high season, and all three are on most tour operators' itineraries, so their morning slots get taken by groups months out.
Is November a good month to book golf in Chiang Mai?
Yes. November gives peak-season weather with shoulder-season availability, and 3 to 6 weeks of notice is usually enough.
November is our favourite month to send first-time golfers. The rains have cleared, the air is clean, and highland mornings start in the high teens Celsius. Tour groups have not arrived in full force yet, so you get a wider choice of tee times and hotels.
The honest catch: early November can still bring a late shower, and some courses are still recovering from wet-season wear. Fairways may be lush and slow, and a few courses schedule maintenance on greens around the season change. Ask about greens condition when you book. Our green conditions guide explains what to expect course by course.
What is the risk of booking peak season too late?
You lose the early tee time first, then your preferred course, then the hotel that sits close enough to make the morning drive work.
Late peak bookings rarely mean no golf. They mean worse golf logistics. A 10:30 tee time in January is pleasant. A 10:30 tee time with a 45-minute transfer from a hotel across town means a 9:00 pickup and a hot back nine, because even in the cool season midday sun is strong.
It also narrows your course mix. If Highlands is full on the day you wanted, the fallback is often a course you would have played anyway, just on a less convenient day. That can push rounds back to back when you wanted a rest day in between.
Should I book March golf early?
No. March tee times are easy to get, and booking early only locks you into the worst air of the year.
This is the downside nobody selling golf likes to print. Chiang Mai's burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and usually peaks in March, when agricultural and forest fires across the north fill the valley with smoke. On bad days the city has ranked among the most polluted in the world, and AQI readings well into the unhealthy range are common. Visibility drops, the mountains vanish, and walking 18 holes in that air is not something we recommend. Our burning season golf guide covers it in full.
How late can I book in the green season?
From May to October, a few days to two weeks is usually enough, and some courses take bookings the day before.
Tee sheets are open and prices drop to their lowest. Our 2026 green-season all-in rates (green fee, caddie fee and cart) run from ฿3,700 at Alpine to ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy. North Hill Golf Club, a short drive from the city, is often bookable a day or two ahead.
The trade-off is weather. September averages 7.1 inches of rain, the most of any month. Storms tend to build in the afternoon, so we book 6:30 to 7:30 starts and aim to be off the course by early afternoon. Courses stop play when lightning is close, so build in a spare morning if a specific round matters to you. Our best tee times guide explains the timing.
Do hotels or tee times fill up first?
In peak season, hotels usually tighten before tee times do, especially properties near the courses or with on-site golf.
Resort rooms at the courses themselves are limited, and city hotels near the Old City fill with non-golf tourists over the holidays. A group of eight needs four rooms in one property on the same nights, which is harder to find than two tee times.
That is why a package helps most in peak weeks. One booking covers the hotel, green fees, caddies, carts, private airport and course transfers, and on-the-ground support if a round moves. Our Highlands Classic package (5 nights, 4 rounds) and Weekend Warrior (3 nights, 3 rounds) are both built with peak demand in mind.
When does booking through an operator not pay off?
For a single weekday round in the green season, booking direct with the course is often as cheap or cheaper.
We say this plainly because it is true. If you are in town for work and want one round at Mae Jo on a Tuesday in July, call the course. You will pay the green fee, caddie fee and cart at the counter, and tip your caddie in cash. An operator earns its fee in peak season and on multi-round trips, where tee times, hotel and transfers must line up across several days. Our booking direct versus agent guide runs the numbers.
How does booking with CMGT Golf work?
You send your dates and group size, we check live availability and send a quote, and a deposit confirms the booking.
We are enquiry-driven, not instant-book. That is deliberate. In peak season we check real tee sheets before quoting, so you are not paying for a slot that does not exist. Tell us your handicap range and the courses you care about most, and we sequence the rounds so the long transfers fall on lighter days. For short stays, the Layover package (2 nights, 2 rounds) works well at shorter notice outside peak weeks.

How far ahead should I book golf in Chiang Mai for December or January?
For mid-December through February, we plan 6 to 10 weeks ahead for groups and weekend rounds at Chiangmai Highlands and Alpine, and 4 to 6 weeks for a couple playing weekdays. Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the tightest weeks. Hotels often fill before tee times do, so the room is usually the real constraint. These are CMGT Golf planning ranges, not course policy, and every course sets its own release window. Send your dates through our golf page and we confirm what is actually open before you pay a deposit.
Can I book Chiang Mai golf at short notice in the rainy season?
Yes. From May to October most courses have open tee sheets, and a few days to two weeks of notice is usually enough. Some courses close to the city, such as North Hill, can often be booked a day or two ahead. Green-season all-in rates are the lowest of the year, for example ฿3,400 at Chiangmai Highlands and ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy (CMGT Golf, 2026). The trade-off is afternoon storms, heaviest in September and October, so take early tee times and expect the odd weather delay.
Should I book March golf in Chiang Mai far in advance?
We advise against locking in March far ahead. March sits inside the burning season, which runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and usually peaks in March, when air quality can turn unhealthy for days at a time. Tee times are easy to get, so there is little gain in early commitment and a real risk of playing in smoke. If March is your only window, keep bookings flexible, check IQAir daily, and consider shifting rounds to Hua Hin or Phuket, which the northern smoke does not reach.
Is it better to book tee times direct or through an operator in peak season?
For one round on a weekday, booking direct with the course works and can be cheaper. For a multi-round trip in peak season, an operator saves you from juggling several course reservations, a hotel and transfers that all have to line up on the same dates. CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven: we send a quote with confirmed tee times, then you secure it with a deposit. We do not offer instant booking. Our booking direct versus agent guide breaks down when each option wins on cost.
Which Chiang Mai courses fill up first in high season?
In our experience the premium resort courses go first: Chiangmai Highlands, Alpine Golf Resort and Summit Green Valley, especially early morning weekend slots. Highlands is the best-conditioned course in the region and Alpine is a championship layout with a tournament pedigree, so both draw tour groups. Value courses such as Gassan Legacy and Mae Jo usually have more room. If your trip hinges on one course, book that round first and build the rest of the itinerary around it.
