Chiang Mai Golf in February: Weather, Crowds and Tips

Chiang Mai golf in February: dry 28-32C days, peak-season crowds and rising haze late in the month. When to book, which courses to play and what to pack.

February is one of the best golf months in Chiang Mai: dry, sunny, 28-32C afternoons and cool morning tee times, with very little rain all month. The trade-offs are peak-season demand at the top courses and burning-season haze that builds after mid-month. Book early, play early February if you can, and check the AQI daily.

What is the weather like for golf in Chiang Mai in February?

February is dry and sunny, with cool mornings, afternoon highs near 28-32C, roughly 10 mm of rain for the month and about 9 hours of sunshine a day.

This is the tail end of the cool, dry season, and it plays like it. TUI's February climate data for Chiang Mai (accessed 2026-10-22) puts monthly rainfall at about 10 mm and sunshine at around 9 hours a day. In practice that means a very low chance of losing a round to rain, and firm, fast-running fairways.

The temperature curve is what shapes your day. A 7:00 tee time at a foothill course like Chiang Mai Highlands can start in a light jumper. By 11:00 you are in short sleeves and reaching for water. February is noticeably warmer than January, and the last week can feel like the start of the hot season. Greens dry out through the day too, so expect them quicker on the back nine than on the first tee.

Is the air quality bad for golf in February?

Early February is usually fine. Haze from agricultural burning builds through the second half of the month and peaks in March, so check the AQI daily.

This is the honest downside of a February trip. Chiang Mai's burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April. In 2026 the province ran a no-burning order from 1 January to 31 May (accessed 2026-10-22), and on 4 February the city still logged a 77 µg/m³ hourly PM2.5 peak, blamed on stagnant air and ongoing burning. IQAir's analysis of a past Thai burning season (accessed 2026-10-22) found PM2.5 during burning periods often runs several times the WHO guideline.

Five hours of walking and swinging is sustained exertion, so the numbers matter more for golfers than for city sightseers. Haze also tends to sit lowest in the valley in the early morning and late afternoon, which is worth knowing when you pick a tee time. Our full breakdown is in the burning season golf guide.

How busy are Chiang Mai golf courses in February?

February is peak season, so premium courses run busy on weekend mornings, while weekday afternoons and the value courses stay comparatively quiet.

Demand comes from two directions. Long-stay winter visitors from Europe, Korea and Japan are still in town, and short-trip golfers arrive for the dry weather. Chinese New Year often falls in late January or February, and in 2027 it lands on 6 February, which pushes up regional travel and hotel rates that week.

Busy does not mean unplayable. It means slower rounds, fewer open slots after 7:30 and less flexibility to change days at short notice. The Chiang Mai Flower Festival, usually held on the first weekend of February, fills city hotels too. Our flower festival guide has the details.

How early should you book February tee times?

Lock February tee times as soon as your flights are booked, especially for weekend mornings at Alpine or Highlands and for groups needing consecutive slots.

There is no fixed lead time that holds every year, so we do not publish one as a rule. What we see on the ground in high season: weekday slots open up closer to the date, weekend 7:00-8:00 slots at the top two courses go first, and a single 4-ball is far easier to place than two 4-balls back to back. Our booking lead time by season guide goes deeper.

As an operator we start requesting February tee times the day a client confirms dates. We work by enquiry, not instant booking: you send dates and group size, we send a quote, you confirm with a deposit, then we secure the slots and send the confirmed schedule with pickup times. Start yours on our Chiang Mai golf page.

Which Chiang Mai courses play best in February?

The dry month suits the premium foothill courses: Highlands and Alpine are at their firmest, while closer-in courses help on hazy days with short transfers.

Dry fairways mean extra roll, and you will feel it on the long courses. Alpine Golf Resort is one of the longest layouts in northern Thailand from the back tees, with big par 5s that become a little more reachable when the ground runs. Chiang Mai Highlands, a Schmidt-Curley design with heavy bunkering and mountain backdrops, is among the best-conditioned courses in the region and pairs well with its spa on a hazy afternoon.

For a short transfer, North Hill Golf Club sits close to the city and suits an arrival-day nine. Royal Chiang Mai, a Peter Thomson layout with links-style pot bunkers and run-offs, plays firm and fast in the dry, which is how it was meant to play. One caution: its conditioning varies, so ask us for recent reports before you commit.

When the afternoon heat bites, evening golf is an option at Summit Green Valley, and Gassan Legacy is a strong morning alternative south of the city. Night golf availability changes, so we confirm it for your dates. The full shortlist is in our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide.

What does a February round cost in Chiang Mai?

Expect high-season pricing at or above green-season rates, plus a mandatory caddie fee and a ฿400-600 cash tip per round.

High-season rack rates change by course and year, so we do not print one figure as fact. One reference point: Highlands costs ฿3,400 all-in during the cheaper April to October season (CMGT Golf, 2026), and February sits at the top end of the year. Value courses closer to the city come in well below the premium names.

The caddie is mandatory, one per golfer. Chiang Mai caddie fees typically sit around ฿300-400, paid to the course. The tip goes directly to your caddie in cash at the end of the round. Carts are optional at some courses and compulsory at others. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette, and cart and caddie fees breaks down the extras.

What tee time works best in February?

Tee off between 6:30 and 8:00 to finish before the 30C-plus afternoon peak and before any daytime haze thickens over the valley.

A 7:00 start at a course 30 to 45 minutes out means a hotel pickup around 6:00. You finish around midday, eat at the clubhouse and are back in the city for a massage. Afternoon starts work on clear days but leave you playing the back nine in the hottest hour. Our best tee times guide has the course-by-course detail.

What should you pack for February golf in Chiang Mai?

Pack a light layer for cool starts, breathable polos, a wide-brim hat, high SPF sunscreen and a handful of N95 masks for hazy days.

Dress code is standard Thai: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes. No denim, sports shorts or sandals. Full rules in our golf dress code guide. Bring two gloves per round, because grips get sweaty by the back nine even in the dry season, plus electrolyte sachets for the second half of the round.

Is a golf package worth it for a February trip?

For three or more rounds in high season, usually yes, because the operator requests scarce tee times and handles early-morning transfers. A single round can be cheaper booked direct.

In February the scarce thing is a 7:00 weekend slot at a top course, not money. A package bundles green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver and airport transfers, plus someone on the ground to try swapping a round to a different course if the AQI spikes. That flexibility is worth more in February than in most other months.

If you only want one round, book direct and take a Grab. For a full trip, compare the Highlands Classic, 5 nights and 4 rounds, or the shorter Weekend Warrior, 3 nights and 3 rounds. For timing across the whole year, see our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is February a good month for golf in Chiang Mai?

Yes, with one condition. February sits inside the November to March high season, so you get dry fairways, very little rain and cool early tee times. The condition is air quality. Agricultural burning builds through February and peaks in March, so the first half of the month is usually clearer than the second. If your dates are flexible, aim for 1 to 15 February and check the AQI daily once you land.

How far ahead should I book February tee times in Chiang Mai?

Earlier than you would for the green season. February is peak demand at the premium courses, and weekend morning slots at Alpine and Highlands are the first to go. As an operator we start requesting February tee times as soon as a client confirms dates, which in practice means several weeks out for a pair and longer for a group of 8 or more who need back-to-back slots. Lead times vary by course and week, so confirm at booking.

Does the burning season affect golf in February?

It can, mainly in the second half of the month. Chiang Mai's burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and usually peaks in March. On 4 February 2026 the city logged an hourly PM2.5 peak of 77 µg/m³, which is unhealthy for long exertion outdoors. Most February days are playable, but carry N95 masks, check IQAir or aqicn each morning, and keep a spa or indoor afternoon in reserve. If haze is a deal-breaker, book early February or January.

What does a round of golf cost in Chiang Mai in February?

More than in the green season. High-season rack rates change by course and year, so we do not quote a single figure. As a reference, Chiang Mai Highlands is ฿3,400 all-in during the cheaper April to October season, so expect February to sit at or above that at the premium courses. On top, budget a caddie tip of ฿400-600 per round in cash. Send us your dates through our golf page for a current quote.

What should I wear for golf in Chiang Mai in February?

Standard Thai course dress code applies: a collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers and soft spikes. No denim, sports shorts or sandals. February mornings can start cool at the foothill courses, so bring a light layer for the first few holes and expect to strip down to a polo by the turn as it climbs past 28C. Add a wide-brim hat, high SPF sunscreen and a few N95 masks in case the haze rolls in late in the month.
