Thailand bans alcohol sales nationwide on five Buddhist holy days, each for a full 24 hours, plus election windows that usually run 18:00 to 18:00. For a Chiang Mai golf group, the 2027 date that matters most is Makha Bucha on Sunday 21 February, right in high season. Golf goes ahead as normal. Only the 19th hole and the bar crawl change.
Our team plans post-round dinners and celebration nights for golf groups through the season, and dry days are one of the logistics questions first-timers ask us most. This guide gives the dates, the rules as they stand in late 2026, and how we plan a trip around them.
Which days are alcohol-free in Thailand?
Five Buddhist holy days (Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asalha Bucha, Khao Phansa, Ok Phansa) plus national and local election days. The dates move each year.
The holy days follow the lunar calendar, so they can shift by a few weeks from one year to the next. Ban days are listed by Thai Holiday Guide (accessed 2026-11-02), and the official notices usually come out a few days before each date.
| Holy day | 2026 date | 2027 date | Season | Golf-trip impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makha Bucha | Tue 3 Mar | Sun 21 Feb | High season | High: falls in peak group weeks |
| Visakha Bucha | Sun 31 May | Thu 20 May | Green season | Low: fewer groups in town |
| Asalha Bucha | Wed 29 Jul | Sun 18 Jul | Green season | Low, but back to back with Khao Phansa |
| Khao Phansa | Thu 30 Jul | Around 19-20 Jul (confirm) | Green season | Second dry day in a row |
| Ok Phansa | October | October (confirm) | End of rains | Medium: early high-season arrivals |
As of early November 2026, the holy-day bans for this year are behind us. The next one is Makha Bucha in February 2027, which is why we are already checking it against group bookings for the coming high season.
What exactly is banned on a holy day?
Selling alcohol is banned from midnight to midnight. Bars, restaurants, clubhouses, supermarkets and 7-Elevens all stop. Golf, food and spas carry on as normal.
The Visakha Bucha 2026 notice reported by Nation Thailand (accessed 2026-11-02) set the ban for the full 24 hours. It listed two exceptions: duty-free shops inside international airport terminals, and trade sales from producers and importers to licensed sellers. The penalty for selling is up to six months in prison, a fine of up to ฿10,000, or both.
Note what the rule targets: the sale, not the drinker. Nobody is checking villa fridges. But every shop, bar and restaurant you would normally buy from will refuse, and in our experience they refuse firmly. Supermarket staff will often wave you away from the drinks aisle, and some stores tape over the fridge doors.
Can hotels still serve drinks on a ban day?
Sometimes. A 2025 easing allowed some licensed hotels and entertainment venues to sell, but the 2026 notice we saw listed only airport duty-free. Ask your hotel directly.
In 2025 the government relaxed the holy-day ban for hotels registered under the Hotel Act, licensed entertainment venues and designated tourist zones, according to Thai press reports at the time. Reporting on the 2026 holy days was narrower, and many hotel bars chose to close anyway. Guesthouses and Airbnb-style rentals were never covered.
Our honest advice: don't build a celebration night on an exemption that might not apply that year. If your group stays at a big resort hotel, email the front desk a week out and ask in writing whether the bar will serve on that date. If the answer is vague, treat it as a no.
How do election days affect alcohol sales?
Election bans usually run from 18:00 the evening before polling to 18:00 on polling day, with no tourist exemptions. They can be national or local.
The February 2026 general election ban ran from 18:00 on 7 February to 18:00 on 8 February, as Khaosod English reported (accessed 2026-11-02). Advance voting days can bring a second dry window, and local elections carry their own bans that apply only in the area voting.
The trade-off here is notice. Holy days are known a year ahead. Election dates can be set with only a few weeks' warning, and the Saturday-night ban hits exactly the night golf groups like to go out. If an election is announced after your trip is booked, we flag it to you as soon as the date is confirmed and suggest which evening to move.
What are the normal drinking hours on any other day?
11:00 to midnight, every day, now that the afternoon ban is gone. A morning round can end in a legal clubhouse beer.
The old rule banned sales from 14:00 to 17:00, dating from 1972. It was suspended on a trial from late 2025, then removed in revised rules published in the Royal Gazette in May 2026, as The Phuket News reported (accessed 2026-11-02).
For a golf day, that's a real change. A 07:00 tee time usually finishes around 12:00 to 13:00 once you add the halfway stop, and lunch with a cold Singha at the clubhouse is now fully legal. Before 11:00, though, nothing is sold, so an early tee time has no beer at the turn. Most groups don't mind. In the heat, water and electrolyte drinks at the turn do more for your back nine anyway.
How should golf groups plan around a dry day?
Move the celebration dinner to another night, stock up the evening before, and use the dry day for golf plus a spa or temple visit.
This is how we sequence a week when a holy day falls inside it:
- Play golf as normal. Courses, caddies and carts all run. Caddie fees and the customary tip are the same as any other day, so budget for them as usual. Fewer local golfers tend to book on major holy days, so the course can feel quieter.
- Move the big night. Birthday dinners, end-of-trip parties and stag nights go on the evening before or after.
- Buy the night before. Drinks bought legally before midnight and enjoyed privately in your villa or room are a different thing from buying on the day.
- Swap the bar for recovery. A massage or a spa afternoon fits a dry day well. Our golf and Thai massage recovery guide covers where to go.
- Join the festival side. Evening candle processions at temples are worth seeing. Our Asalha Bucha and Khao Phansa guide shows what that looks like in Chiang Mai.
If you are visiting a temple on the day, dress for it: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the door. Golf shirts are fine, golf shorts usually are not, so pack a pair of light trousers in the car.
Is Makha Bucha in February a problem for a high-season trip?
Only for one evening. 21 February 2027 is a Sunday in peak season, so groups arriving for a weekend should plan Saturday as the big night.
February is one of the best golf months in Chiang Mai: cool mornings, dry fairways and clear mountain views most days. See our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide for the month-by-month view. The catch is that a three-night weekend, like our Weekend Warrior package, arriving Friday 19 February 2027 would have its Sunday night dry. Friday and Saturday are unaffected, so the fix is simply to put the group dinner on Saturday.
The honest downside of late February is not the ban. It is the burning-season haze, which can start building around then. Check the air quality forecast at the same time you check the holiday calendar. Neither should cancel a trip. Both are worth planning around, and an early tee time usually gives you the clearest air of the day.
Where does the after-round scene go on a dry day?
Night markets, food streets and night golf all keep running. Bars on Nimman and around the Old City go quiet or close.
On a normal night, our after-round nightlife guide maps the beer gardens and rooftop bars golf groups like. On a holy day, many of those simply shut, and the ones that open serve soft drinks only. Food-led evenings work better: a khao soi crawl, a riverside dinner with fresh juices, or a floodlit nine at Star Dome Golf Club close to the city, where the night round itself becomes the entertainment.
Restaurants stay open, so a dry day is a good excuse for the long northern Thai dinner you might otherwise skip in favour of a bar. Ask your driver for a local recommendation. They know which kitchens are busy on a festival night.
What does a package handle that booking alone doesn't?
A package bundles green fees, caddies, carts, hotel and private transfers, and we plan the evenings around the calendar. A single round booked direct can be cheaper.
If you're playing one round, booking a course direct from our golf course directory is often the cheapest route, and we would rather say so. Where a package earns its place is the multi-day trip: tee times across several courses, a private driver for early pickups, and one contact who already knows that 21 February is dry and has moved your group dinner to Saturday.
We are enquiry-driven, not an instant-booking site. You send your dates and group size, we check course availability and the calendar, then send a written quote. A deposit confirms the booking, and we send tee times and pickup details before you fly.

Which days is alcohol banned in Thailand?
Five Buddhist holy days carry a nationwide sales ban: Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asalha Bucha, Khao Phansa and Ok Phansa. Each ban runs midnight to midnight, so the whole calendar day. Election days add more dry windows, usually from 18:00 the evening before polling until 18:00 on polling day. The holy days follow the lunar calendar, so the dates move every year. Published 2027 dates put Makha Bucha on 21 February, Visakha Bucha on 20 May and Asalha Bucha on 18 July. Confirm Khao Phansa and Ok Phansa nearer the time.
Can I drink at the golf clubhouse on a Buddhist holiday?
Plan on no. A golf clubhouse restaurant is treated like any ordinary restaurant, so the beer fridge stays locked all day. The 2026 Visakha Bucha notice listed only airport duty-free and trade sales between licensed sellers as exceptions. Some resort courses with an on-site hotel may be able to serve hotel guests under the 2025 hotel easing, but that varies, so ask the hotel directly before the trip. Golf itself goes ahead as normal. Courses stay open and caddies work, so only the 19th hole changes.
What are the normal alcohol sale hours in Thailand now?
Alcohol can now be sold from 11:00 to midnight every day, with no afternoon break. The old 14:00 to 17:00 ban, which dated from 1972, was trialled off from late 2025 and then dropped in revised rules published in the Royal Gazette in May 2026, according to Thai press reports. For golfers, that matters. A morning round that finishes around 13:00 now runs straight into a legal beer at the clubhouse. Holy days and election windows still override these hours.
What is the fine for selling alcohol on a ban day?
For the Buddhist holy day ban, sellers face up to six months in prison, a fine of up to ฿10,000, or both, according to the official notice reported for Visakha Bucha 2026. This is why bars, 7-Elevens and clubhouse restaurants enforce it strictly. Staff will refuse even a regular customer, so don't ask them to bend it. Drinks you bought legally beforehand and drink privately, for example in your villa, are a different matter from buying on the day.
Should I avoid booking a golf trip over a Buddhist holiday?
No. A holy day costs you one evening of bar plans, not a round of golf. Courses open as usual, and some groups find a holy day the quietest day of their week. The one we flag most is Makha Bucha, which lands in high season (21 February in 2027), when groups often plan a birthday or end-of-trip dinner. Put that celebration on a different night, stock up the evening before, or plan a temple visit instead. Tell us your dates through the enquiry form and we build the dinner nights around the dry days.
