What does a golf group's evening look like in Chiang Mai?

Tee at 7am, finish by 12:30pm, back at the hotel by 2pm, then a swim, a massage, dinner at 7pm and drinks until the midnight close.

The rhythm is set by the courses. In the cool season we book tee times between 6:30am and 8am, and every course we sell sits 30 to 45 minutes from the city, so a four-ball at Alpine Golf Resort or Chiangmai Highlands is back at the hotel with the whole afternoon free. That gap is when the good evenings start: a ฿300 to ฿500 hour-long Thai massage, a pool, then a walk to the first bar (CMGT Golf, 2026).

The trade-off is the hard stop. The bars and restaurants golfers actually use close between midnight and 1am. A handful of licensed venues hold later permits, but they are few, and they are not the places a golf group ends up. If your group's idea of a night is a 3am finish, Chiang Mai will disappoint. If it is a good dinner, a few drinks and a clear head on the first tee, it is close to ideal.

Which area should we base the group in for the best nights?

Nimman for bars and late food, the Old City for live music and markets, the Riverside for dinner and quiet. We pick by group style.

We put most groups of four or more in Nimman. It has the highest density of bars a golfer will enjoy inside a 10-minute walk, from craft taprooms on the numbered sois to rooftop bars at the One Nimman and Maya end of the road. The Old City wins for a group that wants to walk between venues and hit the Sunday Walking Street. The Riverside is the right pick when partners are along and dinner matters more than the fourth drink.

Hotel stock differs too. Nimman is mostly mid-range hotels and serviced apartments at ฿1,500 to ฿3,500 a night, good for a group that wants twin rooms and a pool. The Old City is boutique guesthouses and small hotels with thinner walls and tighter parking for a minibus. The Riverside has the resort-style properties with the gardens and the breakfast spreads that older groups ask for. We hold rooms in all three and confirm the pick with the group before the deposit.

What are the drinking hours and dry days we need to know?

Alcohol sells from 11am to midnight without an afternoon gap, most bars close by 1am, and five Buddhist holy days a year are fully dry.

Thailand scrapped its decades-old afternoon sales ban. The old 2pm to 5pm gap used to catch post-round drinkers every day, so a group finishing at 1pm can now order a clubhouse beer at 2:30pm without the old workaround of a hotel minibar (Bangkok Post, accessed 2026-09-28). Enforcement details have changed more than once in recent years, so we confirm the current rules on every quote rather than assume.

The dry days still bite. Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asalha Bucha, Khao Phansa and Ok Phansa are 24-hour no-sale days nationwide, with only some licensed hotel outlets exempt (Nation Thailand, accessed 2026-09-28). They follow the lunar calendar, so the dates shift each year; Ok Phansa lands in October, right at the start of the cool-season golf run. We flag these dates on every quote so nobody plans the big night for a day the bars are shuttered.

Where do golfers actually drink in Nimman?

Craft beer on the Nimman sois from 5pm, a rooftop at sunset, then a late kitchen. Budget ฿90 to ฿150 a bottle, ฿200 to ฿350 a craft pint.

Nimmanhaemin Road runs roughly a kilometre north-west of the Old City moat, and the numbered side sois hold most of the bars. The craft beer scene is the reason we send golfers here: Thai and imported taps, ฿200 to ฿350 a pint, and outdoor seating that is comfortable by 6pm in the cool season (CMGT Golf, 2026). Large bottles of Chang, Leo and Singha sit at ฿90 to ฿150 in the same bars.

Two rooftops anchor the sunset slot. The rooftop at the Maya shopping centre, at the top of the road, gives a view over Doi Suthep and fills from 6pm. The One Nimman complex opposite has bars and a food court that runs late. Cocktails in both run ฿250 to ฿400, the dearest drinks a golf group will meet in Chiang Mai outside a hotel bar.

The honest downside: Nimman is a university district. On a Tuesday in term time the median age at the next table will be 21, and the music follows. Fridays and Saturdays skew older and busier. Groups over 50 who want a quieter pint usually end up happier at the Riverside.

Where is the best live music after a round?

The North Gate Jazz Co-op at Chang Phuak Gate, most nights from about 8pm, with an open jam session on Tuesdays.

The North Gate Jazz Co-op is a small open-fronted bar on the north moat with a house band most nights and a Tuesday open jam that draws musicians from around the city (Chiang Mai Citylife, accessed 2026-09-28). Music starts around 8pm to 8:30pm, the crowd spills onto the pavement, and a beer costs the same as anywhere else in the Old City. It is the one Chiang Mai venue we recommend to every group without qualification.

Arrive by 7:30pm on a Tuesday or you stand in the road. The bar has almost no seating and no reservations. Pair it with the Chang Phuak Gate night food market across the road, where a plate of khao kha moo (braised pork leg on rice) is ฿50 to ฿70 and the queue is a Chiang Mai institution.

For the Riverside, the restaurants along Charoenrat Road run live cover bands from around 8pm and sit-down dinners with river views. The music is competent rather than special, the food is better, and the whole strip is quiet by 11:30pm.

What should we eat between rounds?

Khao soi at lunch, a northern Thai dinner one night, a steakhouse the next, and the Sunday Walking Street for street food if the dates line up.

Chiang Mai's food is the strongest argument for staying longer than three nights. The Sunday Walking Street closes Ratchadamnoen Road inside the Old City to traffic from late afternoon until around 10pm to 11pm every Sunday, roughly a kilometre of stalls and temple-courtyard food courts (Feel Chiang Mai walking streets guide, accessed 2026-09-28). Go at 5pm for food and before the crush. By 7:30pm it moves at shuffling pace and a group of six will lose each other twice. The Saturday version on Wualai Road is smaller and easier.

Is a night nine better than a night out?

For groups on a short trip, often yes. Gassan Legacy is floodlit at ฿1,650 all-in, around ฿300 under its day rate.

Chiang Mai has real night golf. Gassan Legacy in Lamphun, 30 to 45 minutes south of the city, is fully floodlit, flat and forgiving, and its green-season night rate is ฿1,650 all-in against ฿1,950 by day on the rate sheet we sell from. Star Dome offers nine floodlit holes close to the city; its published fees are dated, so confirm the price before you turn up.

The pattern that works: morning round, afternoon by the pool, 5pm tee at Legacy under lights, then dinner in the city at 9pm. How do we get around at night without a designated driver?

Grab inside the city costs ฿80 to ฿200 a ride. Red songthaews are ฿30 to ฿50 a head. Our driver covers the course runs, not the bar runs.

A package with CMGT Golf includes a private driver for airport transfers and every course transfer. That driver is not a late-night taxi, and we say so up front. Inside the city Grab works well until about 1am, with fares of ฿80 to ฿200 for the Nimman to Old City to Riverside triangle (CMGT Golf, 2026). Red shared songthaew trucks take ฿30 to ฿50 per person for short hops and are fine for a group of four who do not mind a bench.

Two cautions. Do not rent scooters for a night out; Thailand's road death rate is among the world's highest and travel insurance rarely covers an unlicensed rider. And skip the Loi Kroh Road bar strip unless the group specifically wants that scene; the Muay Thai bar shows are fun for one beer, and the rest is a worn-out version of Pattaya.
