A Thai golf halfway house is a quick drink-and-snack stop on the course, and at Chiang Mai courses you'll usually pass two to four of them per round. Order cold water or an electrolyte drink first, fruit second, and offer your caddie a drink or a small cash amount. Most items cost ฿20-150 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Save the full meal for the clubhouse.
What exactly is a halfway house on a Thai golf course?
It's a shaded kiosk beside a tee box selling cold drinks, fruit and small snacks, and Thai courses have several per round, not just one at the turn.
In the UK or US, "the halfway house" usually means one hut at the turn. In Thailand it's a whole system. On most Chiang Mai courses you'll find a stop roughly every four to six holes. Each one has a fridge, a menu board, a few plastic chairs and usually a staff member with cold towels.
The format suits the climate. Cool-season highs sit around the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, and from March to May they regularly pass 35C, so nobody waits nine holes for a drink. Your caddie drives the cart up, you pick something, sign or pay, and you're on the next tee in two to five minutes.
The stops are part of the day, not a break from it. They're where groups regroup, where caddies swap news with each other, and where a slow group ahead becomes obvious.
What should I order at the halfway house?
Water or an electrolyte drink at every stop, fresh fruit for steady energy, and leave the heavy food and the beer for after the round.
Here's what we see on menus across the region, and how we'd rank it for a hot round:
| Item | Typical price (THB) | Why order it | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottled water | ฿20-40 | Cheapest, coldest, always stocked | Every stop |
| Electrolyte or sports drink | ฿30-60 | Replaces sodium lost in sweat | Every second stop when hot |
| Fresh fruit cup (mango, pineapple, watermelon) | ฿40-100 | Light, hydrating, no sugar crash | Best snack choice |
| Coconut water (where sold) | ฿50-100 | Natural potassium, very Thai | Good if available |
| Packaged snacks, boiled eggs, toasties | ฿30-80 | Fills a gap on a late tee time | Fine, keep it small |
| Local beer (Chang, Singha, Leo) | ฿80-150 | Cold and tempting | Clubhouse, not hole 7 |
Premium resort courses such as Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa and Alpine Golf Resort price at the top of these ranges. Older, more local courses such as Lanna Golf Club sit at the bottom.
How should I treat my caddie at the drink stop?
Offer your caddie a drink or a small cash amount once, early in the round, and let them choose. It's a courtesy, not part of the tip.
Caddies at most Thai courses get water free from the course, so many would rather have cash. A long-running Pattaya golf columnist puts it plainly: offer a drink or the money and let your caddie decide, and don't take it off the tip (Pattaya Mail, Golfnutter: Managing caddies, accessed 2026-10-21).
That's the pattern we coach our guests to follow:
- First stop: point at the fridge and ask. If your caddie picks water or a soft drink, buy it. If they politely decline, a ฿50 note handed over discreetly does the job.
- Later stops: no need to repeat unless the day is brutal. In April, a second cold drink is a kind gesture.
- Alcohol: don't push it. Your caddie is driving the cart and working for several more hours.
- The real tip: ฿400-600 per 18 in cash at the bag drop, more for an excellent day. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the full etiquette.
How do I pay at a Thai halfway house?
Most courses let you sign to your locker or scorecard number and pay at checkout. Smaller courses often want cash on the spot.
The locker system is common at resort courses. You give your number, sign a slip, and the total appears on your bill at the pro shop alongside green fee, caddie and cart charges. Check that bill line by line. Mistakes happen, usually a drink charged to the wrong locker.
At smaller or older courses, cash is safer. Card machines at on-course kiosks are rare. Bring enough for drinks for yourself and your caddie, which is usually ฿100-300 per player per round (CMGT Golf, 2026).
How much should I drink on a hot Chiang Mai round?
More than you think, on a schedule. Golf bodies advise small amounts every 15-20 minutes, with some sodium, rather than waiting until you're thirsty.
The halfway houses are your refill points, so plan around them. The numbers from golf-specific guidance are worth knowing:
The Southern California Golf Association hydration flyer recommends 4 to 6 ounces of fluid every 20 minutes, with part of it a sports drink to replace sodium. The International Golf Federation extreme heat guidelines note that acclimatisation can take 10 to 14 days. On a week-long trip, that means you're never fully adapted.
Lightheadedness, nausea or cramps mean stop, sit in the shade and drink. Tell your caddie. They have seen it before and can call the clubhouse if needed. Our beat the heat golf guide covers tee times, clothing and cooling in more detail.
Is the halfway house beer a good idea?
On a cool January morning, one is fine. From March to October, in heat or humidity, it's a poor trade against your back nine.
We'll be honest about this one, because it's the most common question at the first stop. A cold Chang at ฿80-150 on the 10th tee is part of the fun for plenty of visiting golfers. The downside is real, though. Alcohol doesn't replace sodium, it speeds up fluid loss, and in 35C heat it tends to show up as a sloppy stretch of holes late in the round.
Our rule for guests: water first at every stop, and if you want a beer on course, have it at the final halfway house with a water alongside. The clubhouse beer after the round tastes better anyway.
Which Chiang Mai courses have the best halfway houses?
The resort courses have the best-stocked stops and the coldest towels. Simpler local courses are cheaper but always have cold water.
From our rounds across the valley:
- Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa: well-run stops, good fruit, prices at the top of the range. That matches the course, which we rate as the best-conditioned in the region.
- Alpine Golf Resort: 27 holes at championship length means several stops, and over a long, hot round they matter.
- Summit Green Valley: one of the pricier green fees in the area, and drink prices tend to follow. Polished service at the stops.
- Mae Jo Golf Club: relaxed, local and inexpensive. On busy days pace can be slow, so expect to linger at a stop longer than you'd like.
- Lanna Golf Club: basic and cheap, close to the city, with a loyal local crowd. Ask your caddie which stop has the best fruit.
One honest downside across the board: the stops can back up. On a busy high-season weekend, a group stalled at the halfway house slows everyone behind. Grab your drink and move on.
Should I eat a full meal at the halfway house?
No. Keep halfway house food light and save the proper Thai meal for the clubhouse, where khao soi and fried rice are on the menu.
A heavy plate of noodles on the 9th green sits badly in the heat. Fruit and a boiled egg or a small toastie will carry you through. The clubhouse lunch after the round is where Chiang Mai golf food shines: khao soi, pad kra pao, som tam and fresh juices, usually somewhere around ฿120-300 a dish at resort clubhouses (CMGT Golf, 2026).
If you're on an early tee time, eat something at the hotel first. A banana and a coffee before pickup makes the first stop a top-up, not a rescue. Our first-timer mistakes guide lists skipping breakfast near the top.
What does a package cover versus what I pay on the day?
Packages typically cover green fees, caddie fees, carts, transfers and hotel. Halfway house drinks, caddie tips and clubhouse food are almost always paid on the day.
That split is the same whether you book direct or through an operator. Here's how it usually breaks down:
- Usually included in a package: green fee, caddie fee (typically a few hundred baht per round at Chiang Mai courses), cart, private driver and airport transfers, hotel, tee-time booking, on-the-ground support.
- Paid by you on the day: halfway house drinks and snacks, caddie tip, clubhouse meals, pro shop purchases.
For a single round, booking direct can work out cheaper and that's fine. A package earns its keep over three or more rounds, when tee times, transfers and changes all need handling. See our cart and caddie fees breakdown for the course-by-course numbers.
We're enquiry-driven, and we confirm every tee time by hand rather than through instant booking. Tell us your dates, group size and courses, and we'll send a quote that lists what's included and what you'll pay at the course, down to roughly what to carry for drinks and tips. What is a halfway house on a Thai golf course?
It is a small covered drink and snack stop out on the course, usually beside a tee box. Most Chiang Mai courses have two to four of them per 18 holes, not just one at the turn. You pull the cart up, order cold water, an electrolyte drink, fruit or a beer, and sign or pay before the next tee. Staff often hand out cold towels. Stops last two to five minutes. Nobody expects a sit-down meal there. The proper lunch happens at the clubhouse after the round, which is when you order a full Thai dish.
Should I buy my caddie a drink at the halfway house?
Yes, offering is normal and polite. At many courses caddies already get water free, so a lot of them prefer a small cash amount instead. Experienced expat golfers often offer either and let the caddie pick, once, at the first stop, on top of the end-of-round tip. Offer early, with a smile. Do not push alcohol on your caddie. If your caddie points at a bottle of water or a soft drink, that settles it. This is a courtesy and does not replace the ฿400-600 tip you hand over at the bag drop.
How much do halfway house snacks cost in Chiang Mai?
Expect small amounts. Our own observed ranges across Chiang Mai courses in 2026 are roughly ฿20-40 for bottled water, ฿30-60 for a soft drink or electrolyte drink, ฿80-150 for a local beer and ฿40-100 for a fruit cup or snack. Premium resort courses sit at the top of those ranges and simpler local courses at the bottom. Prices change by season and course, so treat these as a guide and check the menu board. Many courses let you sign to your locker number and settle the total at checkout. Carry some small notes anyway.
Is it safe to drink beer at the halfway house in the heat?
One beer on a cool December morning is fine for most golfers. In April, or in humid green-season months, it is a poor trade. Alcohol does not replace the sodium you sweat out, and golf association advice is consistent: limit alcohol on hot rounds and drink water and electrolytes on a schedule. The Southern California Golf Association suggests 4 to 6 ounces of fluid every 20 minutes during play. Save the cold Chang or Singha for the clubhouse when the round is done, and alternate with water if you do have one on the course.
Do halfway house costs come with a golf package?
Usually not. Packages generally cover green fees, caddie fees, carts, transfers and hotel, but halfway house snacks and drinks are almost always paid on the day, as are caddie tips. The amounts are small, often ฿100-300 per player per round including a drink for your caddie. When we quote a CMGT Golf trip we spell out exactly what is included and what you pay on course, so the bill at checkout holds no surprises. Send us your dates through the golf page and we will quote the full trip.
