Chiang Mai Golf Mistakes to Avoid on Your First Trip

The most expensive Chiang Mai golf mistakes are booking in March (peak burning season), arriving without ฿600-1,000 in cash per round for caddie tips, relying on Grab for dawn tee times, and squeezing a round into arrival day. All of them are easy to avoid if you plan ahead. Below are the eight mistakes we see most often from first-timers and how we handle each one on the ground.

Mistake 1: Why is booking a March golf trip a problem?

March is the peak of Chiang Mai's burning season. AQI regularly goes above 150 and can pass 300 on the worst days, which makes five hours outdoors unpleasant or unsafe.

Burning season runs from about mid-January to mid-April. Smoke from agricultural fires fills the valley and hides the mountain views that make these courses special. Mistake 2: What goes wrong with caddie tips and cash?

Caddies are mandatory and are tipped in cash. If you arrive with only cards, your caddie goes unpaid and the bag drop gets awkward.

Every Thai course assigns one caddie to each golfer, and you cannot opt out. There are two separate payments. The caddie fee goes to the course and is typically ฿300-400 in Chiang Mai. The tip goes to your caddie and is usually ฿400-600 for 18 holes, or ฿700-1,000 for excellent service, according to Fairways of Eden's tipping guide (accessed 2026-09-27). Hand the tip over in person at the bag drop and say "khob khun khrap" or "khob khun kha."

Mistake 3: Why is Grab a risky way to reach tee times?

Most courses are 30-45 minutes from the city. A Grab may not turn up at 6am, and getting a car home from a rural clubhouse is harder still.

The airport is only about 4 km from the Old City, and a Grab works fine for that trip. Golf is a different job. You need a car with room for tour bags, a guaranteed pickup before dawn, and a driver who is waiting when you finish at 1pm in Lamphun or up in the hills. A pre-booked private round trip costs about ฿1,400-2,500, which is part of why golf packages include transfers. Mistake 4: Should I play on the day I land?

No. Play your first round the morning after you arrive. Jet lag, a late check-in and a 6:30am pickup add up to your worst round of the trip.

Flights from Europe or Australia usually connect through Bangkok, so most people reach Chiang Mai tired and in the afternoon. Use arrival day to check in, get cash, eat well and go to bed early. Mistake 5: Why does picking courses by name alone backfire?

The well-known courses vary a lot in length and condition. Picking on reputation alone can put a 20-handicapper on a 7,500-yard course.

Alpine Golf Resort plays around 7,500 yards from the back tees and has some very long par 5s. Gassan Panorama is one of the longest layouts in the region at well over 7,000 yards. Both are fun, and both are hard work on a first morning. Most courses have several sets of tees, so ask for the forward set if you are a higher handicapper.

Course condition also varies more than the websites suggest. Chiang Mai Highlands is widely rated among the best-conditioned courses in the region. Reviews of Mae Jo and Inthanon are mixed on the greens, and Summit Green Valley sits at the pricier end, with some reviews mentioning uneven greens. Mistake 6: What dress code mistakes get golfers turned away?

Round-neck tees, denim and gym shorts get golfers stopped at the clubhouse. Pack collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers, and soft spikes.

Thai courses enforce dress codes more strictly than many UK or Australian municipal courses. Staff will refuse Bermuda or sport shorts, sandals and round-neck tees. The pro shop can sell you a shirt, but at resort prices, and that can make you late for your tee time. Women's golf skirts and sleeveless collared tops are generally fine. Mistake 7: Why is booking every round separately a false saving?

For one round, booking direct is often the cheapest option. For three or more rounds, separate bookings usually cost you more in both money and time.

This is the honest trade-off. For a single round, booking direct can beat a package. Once you add a second and third round, you are managing separate green fees, carts, caddie fees, drivers and tee-time changes yourself. Mistake 8: How much should a first-timer try to play?

Three or four rounds in five nights is plenty. Playing every day in 30C heat with no rest day wears out even fit golfers by round four.

First-timers often book a round for every day of the trip. By day four, blisters, sunburn and a 5am alarm make golf feel like a chore. Build in a rest day for temples, food or a spa.
