Chiang Mai Golf Course Picks by Handicap, High to Scratch

Which Chiang Mai golf course suits a high handicapper? Our operator picks by handicap band, with 2026 all-in fees, honest downsides and mixed-group plans.

A high handicapper in Chiang Mai should start at Gassan Legacy (flat, 6,852 yards, ฿1,950 all-in in the 2026 green season). Mid handicappers suit Royal Chiang Mai and Highlands, and low markers get their real test at Alpine and Gassan Panorama. Plan the week around the weakest player's day, not the scratch golfer's ego.

We plan golf weeks for mixed groups every season, and the pattern rarely changes. A group books the four "famous" courses, the 28 handicapper loses 15 balls at Alpine on day one, and the week turns sour. This guide sorts the valley's courses by handicap band so everyone in the fourball enjoys the trip.

Which Chiang Mai golf course suits a high handicapper best?

Gassan Legacy is our first pick: the flattest Gassan layout, 6,852 yards, floodlit, and ฿1,950 all-in during the 2026 green season.

Gassan Legacy Golf Club in Lamphun was renovated by Schmidt-Curley in 2014 (it used to be Lake City). It is the gentlest of the three Gassan courses. Wide landing areas mean a topped or sliced drive usually stays in play, and the floodlights let you play a cooler evening round at ฿1,650 all-in instead of fighting the midday heat (CMGT Golf, 2026). The trade-off is a 30 to 45 minute transfer from the city.

Our second pick is North Hill City Golf Club, about 15 minutes from the airport, with private-club conditioning at a value price. North Hill does not publish rates. Our working estimates are roughly ฿1,750 in low season and ฿2,900 in high season, but they are unconfirmed, so check at booking. Book a day or two ahead, because tee times fill up with members.

For a first-day loosener, the 9-hole Chiang Mai Gymkhana is a short, flat par-36 inside the city. The club dates to 1898 and is one of Asia's oldest sports clubs. Fees are low, but most figures you will find online are out of date, so treat them as a rough guide only.

What makes a Chiang Mai course hard for a 25-plus handicap?

Three things hurt high handicappers here: forced carries over water, deep or plentiful bunkering, and sheer length past 7,400 yards from any tee.

Most courses in the valley are par 72, so the scorecards look alike. What differs is how hard a mishit gets punished. A topped drive at Gassan Legacy runs on. The same shot at Summit Green Valley, where water sits on nearly every hole, costs a ball and a penalty stroke.

Length matters more than golfers admit. Gassan Panorama measures 7,761 yards and includes a 666-yard par-6. A player who carries the driver 180 yards needs four or five full swings on that hole just to reach the green. Heat makes it worse: by the back nine in April, a short hitter loses distance and patience at the same time. For other trip traps, read our list of Chiang Mai golf first-timer mistakes.

Which courses suit a mid handicapper between 12 and 24?

Royal Chiang Mai and Chiangmai Highlands suit mid handicappers best. Both are shorter than Alpine, and their strategic bunkering rewards course management over power.

Royal Chiang Mai Golf Club is a 1996 Peter Thomson design of 6,969 yards with real British-links character: pot bunkers, run-offs, and greens you can bump the ball onto. The official green fee is ฿2,800 year-round. The honest downside is conditioning, which we rate as mixed and variable by season.

Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa is the best-conditioned course in the region, a 2005 Lee Schmidt layout with 27 holes and more than 130 bunkers. Green-season all-in was ฿3,400 (฿2,250 green fee, ฿400 caddie, ฿750 cart; CMGT Golf, 2026). Olsen Tours lists bundled Highlands rates of ฿4,400 to ฿5,700 per person for the same Apr-Oct 2026 window, with transport included (Olsen Tours, accessed 2026-10-25).

Mae Jo Golf Club also fits this band. It is the closest resort course to the city, about 20 minutes out, with orchard views toward Doi Suthep. Be warned that it has the weakest conditioning of the premium set and a slow pace of play.

Which Chiang Mai courses test a low handicapper?

Alpine and Gassan Panorama are the real tests. Both play past 7,400 yards from the back, with long par-5s and water you have to carry.

Alpine Golf Resort is a 2008 Ron Garl design with professional tour history. From the tips it measures about 7,470 to 7,540 yards, and the par-5 4th runs to around 652 yards. The island-green par-3 settles a lot of bets. Green-season all-in was ฿3,700 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Our Alpine Golf Resort review goes through it hole by hole.

Gassan Panorama is cheaper at ฿1,950 all-in but longer, at 7,761 yards. Its condition varies with the season. If you want scenery and difficulty together, Gassan Khuntan climbs into the mountains. It is the longest transfer of the three, at 45 minutes or more, and the weakest-conditioned Gassan course.

How do you plan a week for a mixed-handicap group?

Open on the easiest course, put the hardest round mid-week when swings are warm, and finish somewhere everyone enjoys rather than on the toughest test.

Here is a six-day, five-round week we build often:

  • Day 1: Gassan Legacy, to shake off the flight.
  • Day 2: Royal Chiang Mai, links-style fun for every band.
  • Day 3: Rest, spa or temples.
  • Day 4: Alpine, the low markers' day. Higher handicappers play forward tees and pick up freely.
  • Day 5: Chiangmai Highlands, the best conditioning in the valley.
  • Day 6: North Hill or Mae Jo, a short transfer before the flight.

Most groups tee off between 7:00 and 8:00 to beat the heat, so the driver collects you from the hotel 45 to 60 minutes earlier for the Lamphun courses. Our Chiang Mai golf course pairings itinerary shows which courses sit close enough together to pair with a hotel move. If you want the group's week planned for you, the Lanna Signature 7-night package covers five rounds, and the Highlands Classic 5-night covers four.

Which courses should high handicappers avoid early in the trip?

Avoid Summit Green Valley and Gassan Panorama on the first two days. Their water and length punish a rusty, jet-lagged swing far more than other courses do.

Summit Green Valley is a 1990 Denis Griffiths design and the region's priciest course, with high-season rates quoted from ฿3,900. With water on almost every hole and recurring complaints about the greens, it is a poor-value round for a 28 handicap. We usually leave it off mixed-group itineraries unless a low marker asks for it.

Gassan Panorama is fine later in the week, played from the forward tees with realistic expectations. On day one it can cost a sleeve of balls before the turn.

Do caddies help higher handicappers more than low markers?

Yes. Every golfer has to take a caddie, and a good one reads lines, picks the safe miss and finds lost balls, which helps higher handicappers most.

Caddie fees run ฿300 to ฿400 at most Chiang Mai courses and are paid to the course. The tip is separate and expected: ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, in cash at the bag drop, and more for excellent service. Long-running Thai golf columns give the same advice: greet your caddie, tell her your playing order, and tip after the round (Pattaya Mail, accessed 2026-10-25). For a high handicapper, a caddie who knows where the ball went saves more strokes than a new driver. Our guide to Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping covers the full etiquette.

Does the season change which course a high handicapper should play?

Yes. High season, November to March, brings firmer, faster greens and full tee sheets. Green-season rain softens the fairways and cuts down roll.

Soft fairways hurt short hitters most, because their drives stop where they land. In the green season (1 April to 31 October) we steer high handicappers toward flatter courses like Gassan Legacy and away from long tracks like Panorama. Mornings are usually playable, and the short afternoon storms are heaviest in September and October.

The cool, dry months from November to February are peak golf season, with highland mornings around 15 to 22C. The honest warning is the burning season, roughly mid-January to mid-April and worst in March, when the AQI often passes 150 and can spike much higher on bad days. Check live air quality on IQAir (accessed 2026-10-25) before every round, and read our burning season golf guide.

Is a golf package worth it for a mixed-ability group?

For three or more rounds, usually yes. We match each course to your group's handicaps, then handle tee times, caddies, carts, hotel and private transfers.

The value is not only in the price. A mixed group needs someone to pick the right courses in the right order, and a private driver who knows North Hill is 15 minutes from the airport while Khuntan is 45 minutes or more. A private round-trip transfer booked yourself costs roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 per course day. For a single round, booking direct is often cheaper, and we will say so.

Booking with us takes three steps. Send your group's handicaps and dates through our Chiang Mai golf packages page. We reply with a course plan and quote. A deposit then confirms the tee times. For shorter trips, look at the Weekend Warrior 3-night. You can browse every course in our Chiang Mai golf course directory, or compare the top picks in our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which golf course in Chiang Mai is best for a high handicapper?

Gassan Legacy Golf Club is our first pick for a 25-plus handicap. It is the flattest and easiest of the three Gassan courses, measures 6,852 yards from the back, is floodlit for cooler evening rounds, and cost ฿1,950 all-in during the Apr-Oct 2026 green season (CMGT Golf, 2026). North Hill City Golf Club is the second pick for value and good conditioning near the airport. For a short first hit, the 9-hole Chiang Mai Gymkhana is a relaxed warm-up. Save Alpine and Gassan Panorama for later in the week, once the swing has settled.

Is Chiangmai Highlands too hard for a beginner or high handicapper?

Highlands is playable for a high handicapper, but it is not forgiving. The Lee Schmidt layout has more than 130 bunkers across 27 holes, so a player who struggles from sand will feel it. The upside is that Highlands is the best-conditioned course in the region, so lies are clean and greens roll true. Play the forward tees, let your caddie pick the bail-out side on each hole, and pick up when a hole gets away from you. For mixed groups we usually put Highlands in the middle of the week, not on day one.

Can a mixed-handicap group play the same course together in Chiang Mai?

Yes, and most of our groups do. Every Thai course assigns one caddie per golfer, so slower players get help reading lines and finding balls, which keeps pace reasonable. The trick is to choose courses with room off the tee and few forced carries for the higher markers, then let low handicappers move back to the championship tees. Gassan Legacy, Royal Chiang Mai and Highlands all work for mixed fourballs. Alpine and Gassan Panorama are long enough that a 28 handicap will spend the day hitting fairway woods, so pick those days carefully.

What is the hardest golf course in Chiang Mai?

For pure length, Gassan Panorama is among Thailand's longest courses at 7,761 yards, with a 666-yard par-6. Alpine Golf Resort plays around 7,470 to 7,540 yards, has a par-5 4th of about 652 yards and an island-green par-3, and has hosted professional tour golf. Summit Green Valley has water on nearly every hole, which punishes a wayward driver more than raw length does. Low handicappers who want a test should play Alpine and Panorama from the back tees and treat Summit as a target-golf round.

Should a high handicapper book a golf package in Chiang Mai?

For three or more rounds, a package usually makes life easier for a mixed group. CMGT Golf matches courses to each player's level, books tee times, and folds in caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver and airport transfers, so nobody is arranging a ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 round-trip transfer before dawn. For a single round, booking direct can be cheaper, and we will tell you so. We are enquiry-driven: you send your group's handicaps and dates through our golf page, we send a quote, and a deposit confirms it.
