Gassan Legacy Golf Club review: flat, floodlit, Lamphun

Gassan Legacy is the flattest and most walkable of the three Gassan courses, a Schmidt-Curley redesign of the old Lake City layout at par 72, and the only one in the group where a late tee time still works because it is floodlit. Green-season all-in rates sit near ฿1,950 by day and ฿1,650 at night (CMGT Golf, 2026).

We send groups to Gassan Legacy most often as a second or third round of a trip, when legs are tired and nobody wants another 45-minute drive up into the hills. It is the course we suggest when a group has mixed ability, one player with a dodgy knee, and a flight that lands too late for a normal morning tee time. Here is what the course actually delivers, what it costs, and where it falls short.

What is Gassan Legacy Golf Club?

An 18-hole par 72 in Ban Thi, Lamphun, opened in the mid-2000s as Gassan Lake City and reopened in 2014 after a Schmidt-Curley renovation.

Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley Design led the rebuild, which is the same firm behind Chiangmai Highlands, the best-conditioned course in the region. That lineage shows in two places: the shaping of the bunkers, which are deeper and more sculpted than the older northern layouts, and the drainage, which is why the course still plays firm in green season when other cards go soggy.

The property is open parkland rather than jungle or mountain. Mature trees line most holes, the hills of Doi Khun Tan sit in the background, and the routing loops back to a clubhouse with a restaurant, a pro shop and a driving range. Nothing about it is dramatic. That is the point of the place.

Card length depends who you ask. Where2Golf lists roughly 7,089 yards off the back tees, close to 6,000 from the club tees and around 5,465 forward (accessed 2026-08-18). Golfasian quotes 6,852 yards (accessed 2026-08-18). Both figures circulate, so pick your tee by feel on the day rather than by the number on the scorecard.

What does a round at Gassan Legacy cost?

Roughly ฿1,950 all-in by day and ฿1,650 at night on green-season operator rates, against a published high-season green fee in the ฿4,000 range before cart and caddie.

That gap is the whole story of Chiang Mai golf pricing. Apr to Oct is wet, lush and cheap. Nov to Mar is dry, busy and dear. The same course, the same caddies, roughly half the money. If your dates are flexible and you can live with an afternoon storm, green season is the better buy at every course in the valley, not only this one.

The caddie tip sits outside all of it at ฿400 to ฿600 per 18, cash, handed over at the bag drop at the end of the round. Nobody bills it, nobody reminds you, and it is not optional in practice.

Is it really the flattest Gassan course?

Yes. Where2Golf calls the terrain gently undulating and easy to walk, and walking is permitted, which is rare in northern Thailand.

Compare that to Gassan Khuntan, where the mountain routing means a cart is not optional in practice. Legacy runs across open parkland with a backdrop of jungle-clad hills. There are no blind tee shots that demand local knowledge and no 40-metre drops between green and next tee.

For a group of four with mixed fitness, that changes the day. Nobody waits at the top of a hill. Pace of play holds up. A player who has already done two rounds in three days can get round without their legs going.

How hard does the water make it?

Water is in play on most holes after the rebuild, and mid-handicappers routinely lose more balls here than the flat ground suggests.

The renovation turned a dated layout into one of the more water-heavy cards in the north. Reviewers on Top 100 Golf Courses and elsewhere describe narrow curving fairways with bunkers down one side and lakes down the other (accessed 2026-08-18). Published accounts of losing most of a sleeve in a single round are common enough that we warn every group about it.

Golfasian counts five short holes in a 110 to 180 yard band and five par 5s. That mix rewards a golfer who can hit a 7-iron to a number and punishes anyone who reaches for driver on instinct. Two or three tee shots per side are better played with a hybrid or a 3-iron to a landing area, and your caddie will tell you which ones if you ask before you pull a club.

What are the caddies and on-course extras like?

Caddies are mandatory, assigned at the bag drop, and worth listening to on the water holes; carts, rental clubs and the tip are all charged on top of a direct green fee.

Every club in Chiang Mai runs a compulsory caddie. At Legacy that means one caddie per player, in club uniform, walking or riding with you for the full 18. Standards vary by who you draw. Most read the grain on the greens well, most will call the layup line on the water holes, and English ranges from a few words to conversational. Point at the target and ask for a number and you will be fine.

Extras to budget for on a direct booking: cart at ฿700 to ฿750, club rental around ฿900 a set, plus the ฿400 to ฿600 cash tip. Range balls and a bottle of water on the turn are minor. On an operator all-in rate the first two are already inside the number and only the tip is left.

What is night golf actually like here?

Golfasian confirms floodlights that allow an early tee-off and play after dark, and the night all-in rate runs about ฿300 under the day rate.

Night golf is a genuine planning tool, not a novelty. A 17:30 tee time works after an afternoon in the Old City, and the temperature drops well below what you get in a March or April afternoon. It also gets you a round on a day your flight landed at noon, which turns a wasted arrival day into a playing day.

The trade-offs are real. Depth perception over water is harder under lights, insects gather near the lakes after dark, and your caddie is reading greens by floodlight as well. Balls hit into the dark past the lit corridor are gone. Legacy and Star Dome are the two floodlit options we book most, with Summit Green Valley as the third.

How long is the drive from Chiang Mai?

Budget 30 to 45 minutes each way from the city, southeast on Route 11 then Route 1147 toward Ban Thi in Lamphun province.

Golfasian puts the club nearer 45 minutes from the centre. Where2Golf measures 25 km. Both are consistent with a 30 minute run at 6:00am and a 45 minute crawl at 8:30am. Chiang Mai's CNX airport sits a few kilometres from the Old City, so an arrival-day round here is feasible if the flight lands before noon.

A pre-booked private round trip in this ring runs ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 (CMGT Golf, 2026), typically a van with space for four bags. Grab works for the outbound leg on a mid-morning tee time and is unreliable for both an early morning pickup and the return from Ban Thi, where drivers are thin on the ground. Book the transfer both ways or arrange for the driver to wait.

Where does Legacy sit among the three Gassan courses?

Legacy is the fair test, Panorama is the spectacle, Khuntan is the scenery with the longest drive and the weakest turf.

When should you play it?

Nov to Feb for cool mornings, Jun to Oct for the cheapest rates and playable mornings, and avoid the peak of burning season.

Cool season mornings start in the mid-teens Celsius and climb through the round, which is the best golf weather Thailand offers. It is also when tee times at the popular courses go first, so book early if your dates are fixed.

Burning season runs from roughly February to April and peaks in March, when agricultural burning across the north pushes Chiang Mai's air quality into unhealthy territory for days at a time. Green season, Jun to Oct, brings short afternoon storms that are heaviest in September and October. Mornings usually play fine, and the drainage after the rebuild handles it better than the older layouts do.

How do you book a tee time at Gassan Legacy?

Direct by phone or the club's own booking form for a single round, or through an operator who holds tee-time blocks if you need a specific slot in high season.

For one round in green season, the club is easy to deal with and the promo rate is often the best price available. Give them a date, a time and a headcount, and pay at the counter on the day.

High season is different. Nov to Feb mornings at the popular courses fill weeks out, and a group of eight wanting consecutive tee times is a harder ask than a pair wanting anything before nine.
