Par 3 Golf in Chiang Mai: Short Courses for Quick Rounds

Chiang Mai has no dedicated par 3 course we book, but 9-hole layouts, floodlit night nines and city courses fit a quick round. Fees, times and trade-offs.

Chiang Mai has no dedicated par 3 course we recommend, so the short-round answer is a 9-hole course: Chiang Mai Gymkhana (about 2,909 yards) or Star Dome (about 3,104 yards) inside the city, a single nine at Lanna Golf Club, or a floodlit evening round at Gassan Legacy from about ฿1,650 all-in. A city nine fits in two to three hours door to door. A resort nine is closer to a half-day outing.

That matters if you are a beginner, travelling with a junior, or squeezing golf around a city break. Below is how each option plays, what it costs, and where it falls short. For the full-length picture, start with our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide.

Is there a true par 3 golf course in Chiang Mai?

Not one we would book for guests. Chiang Mai's short options are full-length 9-hole par 36 courses, single nines at larger clubs, and floodlit evening rounds.

We searched course directories and listings in October 2026 and found no maintained pitch-and-putt or par 3 layout open to visitors. What the city does have is two compact 9-hole courses with standard par 3s, par 4s and par 5s, plus a ring of 18- and 27-hole resort courses where you can play one nine.

For a beginner, a real 9-hole course is arguably better than a par 3 track. You hit every club, you learn Thai caddie etiquette, and your next full round will not feel like a different sport. The catch is that a 380-yard par 4 is still a 380-yard par 4. There is no forgiving short version of these holes, so if you are still struggling to get the ball airborne, a range session is a better first step than a course.

Which short courses are closest to the Old City?

Chiang Mai Gymkhana and Star Dome are both inside the city, and Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the Old City. No other option comes close for convenience.

The Chiang Mai Gymkhana course belongs to a club founded in 1898, one of the oldest sports clubs in the region. It plays as 9 holes, par 36, about 2,909 yards from the men's tees according to the GolfPass scorecard (accessed 2026-10-16). It is semi-private, walking is allowed, and the setting is flat and leafy, which suits a relaxed first round.

Star Dome Golf Club on Wengkawe Road is the other city nine, at about 3,104 yards and par 36. The 1golf.eu listing (accessed 2026-10-16) shows a green fee of around ฿600, while older reviews report higher totals once a foreigner surcharge is added. Treat the fee as a range and confirm on the day.

Lanna Golf Club is a long-established 27-hole course run by the Royal Thai Army, about 10 minutes from the Old City. Three nines means you can play one and leave. Its 18-hole green fee is about ฿1,350 (CMGT Golf, 2026). A 9-hole rate exists at most Thai clubs, but we have not confirmed Lanna's, so ask when booking.

How much does a 9-hole round cost in Chiang Mai?

Expect roughly ฿600 to ฿1,950 all-in depending on the course, plus a cash caddie tip. The city nines are cheapest, floodlit resort rounds cost more.

Nine holes is not always half price. Several Thai clubs charge a 9-hole green fee well above 50% of the 18-hole rate, and the caddie fee and cart fee often stay close to full. At Gassan Legacy the night round runs ฿1,650 all-in against ฿1,950 by day (CMGT Golf, 2026), so the main saving is the heat, not the money.

Budget the tip on top. For 18 holes the norm is ฿400 to ฿600. Carry small notes, since caddies are paid in cash and change can be scarce at the bag drop. Our full breakdown is in the Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping guide.

Can you play night golf in Chiang Mai?

Yes. Gassan Legacy and Summit Green Valley run floodlit rounds, and North Hill lights its final nine. An evening round is the best short option in hot months.

Gassan Legacy Golf Club in Lamphun, about 30 to 45 minutes out, is the flattest and easiest of the Gassan courses, which makes it the most forgiving choice under lights. Wide landing areas help when the ball is harder to follow in the air.

Summit Green Valley is one of the few Chiang Mai courses with floodlighting, according to Olsen Tours Golf (accessed 2026-10-16). Last tee-off for an evening nine has been reported around 19:00, but confirm on the day. Honest caveat: it is among the region's priciest courses, and reviews regularly mention inconsistent greens.

North Hill Golf Club is about 15 minutes from the airport, and its final nine holes are lit for evening play, per Olsen Tours Golf (accessed 2026-10-16). Its fees are not published, so we quote it case by case.

How long does a short round take?

Allow two to two and a half hours for nine holes with a cart, plus transfer time. A city course saves 60 to 90 minutes of round-trip driving.

Thai rounds are caddie-paced and relaxed. A weekend field of local golfers can push nine holes toward three hours. The bigger time cost is the road: most resort courses ring the valley 30 to 45 minutes from the city, so a nine at a resort is a half-day outing. A nine at Gymkhana or Star Dome can fit between breakfast and lunch.

For the best windows, see our guide to the best tee times for Chiang Mai golf. Early morning and the floodlit evening slot are the two cool windows, and weekday mornings are usually the quietest.

Are short courses good for beginners and juniors?

Yes, with preparation. No handicap is generally required, but you must keep pace, follow the dress code, and know basic etiquette before teeing off.

A short course is still a real course with real groups behind you. Spend an hour on a range first. Every major course has a chipping area and putting green, and a caddie will read greens and hand you the right club, which takes pressure off a nervous first-timer. If you fall behind, pick up and drop near the green. Nobody will mind, and the group behind will thank you.

Dress rules apply on a nine as much as an eighteen: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes. No denim, sport shorts or sandals. Our Chiang Mai golf dress code page covers the details, and first-timer mistakes covers the rest.

For juniors with real ambition, Alpine hosts serious junior events. See our report on the Alpine AJGA Thailand junior championship.

When is the best time of year for a quick round?

November to February for comfort. From March to May, play at dawn or under lights, and check air quality first because burning season peaks in March and April.

The cool, dry months from November to February bring fresh mornings, especially on the higher courses. From March to May, highs pass 35C, and burning season runs from roughly mid-January to mid-April. Some days in that window bring PM2.5 readings well into unhealthy territory.

Green season from June to October is usually the cheapest, with short afternoon storms. Morning nines are generally playable, and a lightning siren will clear the course until the storm passes. See beating the heat on Chiang Mai courses for more.

Does a golf package make sense for short rounds?

Not for a single nine. Book that direct. A package pays off when short rounds sit inside a multi-day trip that needs hotel, transfers and tee times arranged.

One round at a city course is cheap and simple to arrange yourself, with a short Grab ride each way. We will tell you that directly. The maths changes when you mix in a couple of full rounds at valley courses, where a pre-booked private round trip typically runs about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 and Grab is unreliable for early pickups with a golf bag.

Our Layover 2-night package suits golfers short on time, and the Culture and Golf 5-night trip mixes three rounds with sightseeing for mixed-ability groups. Both cover green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private transfers and on-the-ground support, and we can swap a full round for a nine or a night round.

Booking works in three steps. Send us your dates, group size and ability level through the CMGT Golf enquiry page. We check tee times and reply with a quote. You confirm with a deposit, and we send your pickup times the day before each round.

Which short option should you pick?

Want the shortest trip and some history: Gymkhana. Want lights and an easy layout: Gassan Legacy at night. Want resort quality and the option to play more: one nine at Lanna.

If you are unsure, start in the city. If nine holes go well, the full courses are a 30 to 45 minute drive away, and our best value golf course guide shows where to go next.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a par 3 golf course in Chiang Mai?

We have not found a dedicated par 3 or pitch-and-putt course in Chiang Mai that we would send a paying guest to. The short-round options are full-length 9-hole courses instead: Chiang Mai Gymkhana (9 holes, par 36, about 2,909 yards) and Star Dome (9 holes, par 36, about 3,104 yards), both inside the city. You can also play a single nine at a 27-hole course like Lanna Golf Club, or book a floodlit evening round at Gassan Legacy or Summit Green Valley. For pure short-game work, every resort course has a chipping area and putting green.

How long does 9 holes take in Chiang Mai?

Plan on two to two and a half hours for nine holes with a cart, and closer to three if you walk or play behind a busy weekend field. Thai golf is caddie-led and rarely rushed, so a 9-hole round is not a 90-minute sprint. Add 15 to 20 minutes at each end for bag drop, caddie assignment and settling the bill. A city course like Gymkhana or Star Dome saves the 30 to 45 minute drive each way to the valley resorts, which is where most of the time saving on a short round comes from.

Do I still need a caddie for a 9-hole round?

Usually yes. Caddies are mandatory at almost every Thai course, one per golfer, and that does not change because you are playing nine. The caddie fee is paid to the course and in Chiang Mai typically sits around ฿300 to ฿400. The tip is separate and goes to the caddie in cash at the bag drop. For 18 holes the norm is ฿400 to ฿600. For nine we suggest no less than ฿300 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Walking is permitted at a few courses such as Lanna Golf Club and Gymkhana, which is rare, but confirm caddie rules when you book.

Can beginners and juniors play the short courses in Chiang Mai?

Yes. No official handicap is generally required, but you need to be course-ready: know the basics of etiquette, keep pace, and wear a collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers and soft spikes. The 9-hole city courses are the gentlest starting point. Of the full courses, Gassan Legacy is the flattest and easiest of the Gassan group and runs floodlit evening rounds. Juniors should get some range and short-game time first. A caddie helps a lot with reads and club choice, which makes a first round on a real course far less stressful.

Is night golf in Chiang Mai worth it?

For a short round in the hot months, yes. Evening play dodges the worst of the heat, which matters from March to May when highs pass 35C. Gassan Legacy runs floodlit golf at about ฿1,650 all-in at night versus ฿1,950 by day (CMGT Golf, 2026). Summit Green Valley has floodlighting, and North Hill lights its final nine. Last tee-off times change by season, so confirm when booking. The trade-off: depth perception on approach shots is harder under lights, and insects come out after dark.
