Australia to Chiang Mai Golf Trip: Routes and Planning

How Australian golfers reach Chiang Mai: one-stop routes via Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, how many nights to book, when to fly, and which package fits.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team03 Nov 20269 min read

A golf trip from Australia to Chiang Mai takes one stop, usually through Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, and 13 to 18 hours door to door from the east coast. Book five to seven nights so you get four or five rounds. Fly November to February for the best conditions and skip March for the haze.

We host Australian golfers in Chiang Mai every season. This guide covers how to get here, how long to stay, what a round costs and which weeks to avoid. For the courses themselves, start with our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide.

Can you fly direct from Australia to Chiang Mai?

No. No airline flies Australia to Chiang Mai nonstop at the time of writing, so every trip routes through one Asian hub, usually with a 1 to 3 hour connection.

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) handles regional jets and narrowbodies. Its international links are mostly Asian short-haul. The long-haul leg from Australia ends in Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, and a second short flight takes you north.

That is the honest downside of Chiang Mai for Australians: you will not get the single-flight simplicity of Bali. The upside comes once you land. CNX sits about 4 km from the Old City and 10 to 15 minutes from most hotels (CMGT Golf, 2026). Few golf destinations put the airport this close to town, and most of the main courses are 20 to 45 minutes from the city. Our Chiang Mai airport transfer guide covers the arrival in detail.

Which connection works best from each Australian city?

Sydney and Melbourne golfers have the most choice through Bangkok. Perth golfers do well through Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Brisbane and Adelaide usually connect through Singapore.

On Thai Airways' winter schedule, Sydney and Melbourne each get about 14 weekly flights to Bangkok and Perth gets about 7 (The Nation Thailand, accessed 2026-11-03). Scoot raised its Singapore to Chiang Mai service to 14 weekly flights from December 2025 (AeroRoutes, accessed 2026-11-03).

Is it worth adding a Bangkok night on the way?

For east-coast golfers arriving late at night, often yes. One night in Bangkok turns a long travel day into a short one and protects your first tee time.

Flights from Sydney and Melbourne often land in Bangkok in the early morning or late evening. If you land late, the last domestic flights north can be tight. A night near the airport, then a morning flight to Chiang Mai, means you play your first round fresh. Our Bangkok stopover before Chiang Mai golf guide covers where to stay and whether to squeeze in a round there.

The trade-off: it costs a hotel night and half a golf day. For a five-night trip we usually advise flying straight through and keeping arrival day free of golf. Use that afternoon to settle in, check your clubs survived the flight, and get an early night before a dawn pickup.

How many nights should an Australian golf trip be?

Five to seven nights from the east coast, four from Perth. Fewer nights means you spend more of the trip flying than playing.

The Highlands Classic 5-night package is the shape we recommend most to Australians. The Lanna Signature 7-night package suits groups who want five rounds and a proper rest day. Perth golfers often take the Northern Value 4-night package.

Plan a rest day into anything longer than four rounds. Back-to-back 18s in Thai heat and humidity tire most visiting golfers by day three, and a free day for a massage, a temple or a café crawl keeps the last rounds enjoyable.

Will jet lag affect my golf?

Barely. Chiang Mai is 4 hours behind Sydney and Melbourne in summer, 3 behind Brisbane and 1 behind Perth, so your body clock favours early tee times.

This is one of the real advantages over a European or US golf trip. A 7:00 tee time in Chiang Mai feels like 11:00 to a Sydney golfer during daylight saving, so dawn starts that would be brutal at home feel easy here. Early tee times also beat the heat. On our best tee times for Chiang Mai golf page we explain why the first two hours after dawn give the best greens and the coolest air.

The flip side: you will be ready for bed early. Most of our Australian guests are on the first tee by 7:00 and back at the hotel by early afternoon, which suits the climate well.

When should Australians fly for golf in Chiang Mai?

November to February for weather, June to August for value. Avoid March: Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, deep in burning season.

The Australian summer holidays overlap Chiang Mai's high season, roughly November to March. That means great conditions and the hardest tee times to secure, especially Christmas to mid-January. See our Chiang Mai golf booking lead time by season guide for how early to lock it in.

The Australian winter (June to August) falls in Chiang Mai's green season. Rounds are cheaper and short afternoon storms are common, but mornings usually play well and the courses are at their greenest. For a month-by-month view, read the best time for golf in Chiang Mai.

What does a round cost once you land?

Green-season all-in rounds run about ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 at the main courses, including green fee, caddie and cart. Tips are extra.

Chiang Mai Highlands is among the best-conditioned courses in the region, with mountain views and quick greens. Alpine Golf Resort is the longest test and has hosted professional tour events. Gassan Legacy is the most forgiving and best-value Gassan layout, a good warm-up round after the flight. High-season rates are higher and rarely published in full, so confirm them at booking.

Caddies are compulsory, one per golfer. The caddie fee is usually ฿300 to ฿400, and the expected cash tip is ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes. Bring small notes for tips, because change is not always on hand at the bag drop. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette.

What paperwork do Australians need before flying?

A passport with six months' validity, the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card filed within 72 hours of landing, and travel insurance that covers golf equipment.

Thailand was reported to have reduced visa-free stays for Australians to 30 days from 15 September 2026 (VisasNews, accessed 2026-11-03). A golf trip fits well inside that, but confirm the current rule on Smartraveller before you fly. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) opens 72 hours before arrival and is free on the official portal (Royal Thai Consulate-General, Fukuoka, accessed 2026-11-03). Ignore paid "TDAC service" sites.

On insurance, check the policy's limit for sporting equipment. A full set of clubs can exceed the default single-item limit on cheaper policies, and airline damage to drivers is one of the most common claims we see.

How does Chiang Mai compare with Bali for Australian golfers?

Bali is closer and has direct flights. Chiang Mai has more courses within an hour, cheaper green-season rounds and cooler high-season mornings.

Bali wins on convenience: direct flights from most Australian capitals. Chiang Mai wins on choice. There are more than ten courses within about 45 minutes of the city, and you can play a different layout every day for a week, from flat resort courses to hilly mountain tracks. We compare both side by side in Bali vs Chiang Mai golf.

Is a package worth it versus booking each round yourself?

For four or more rounds, usually yes. For one round on a city stopover, booking direct is often cheaper, and we will tell you so.

A Chiang Mai golf package bundles green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver for every round, and airport transfers both ways. The driver matters most. A private round trip to a course costs about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500, and ride-hailing apps are unreliable for 6:00 pickups with golf bags. You also get one contact on the ground if a storm moves your tee time.

If you only have one spare day while passing through, the Layover 2-night package or a single Stay & Play round covers it. We are enquiry-driven: tell us your dates, departure city and group size, and we send a quote, then confirm tee times and hotel once you pay a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights from Australia to Chiang Mai?

No. At the time of writing no airline flies nonstop from any Australian city to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), so every routing needs one stop. The three practical hubs are Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Thai Airways runs frequent flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to Bangkok, and from there a domestic flight north takes about 70 minutes. Through Singapore, Scoot flies to Chiang Mai daily or close to it. Total travel time from the east coast usually runs 13 to 18 hours depending on the connection. Check live schedules before you book, because frequencies change each season.

How many nights should Australians book for a Chiang Mai golf trip?

From Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane we recommend five to seven nights. You lose most of day one and the last day to flights, so a three-night trip gives you only two clean golf days after a long travel day. Five nights fits four rounds with a rest day, which is our Highlands Classic shape. Seven nights fits five rounds, the Lanna Signature shape. Perth golfers have a shorter trip and only a one-hour time difference, so four nights with three rounds works well. Anything under four nights rarely justifies the airfare from the east coast.

Do Australians need a visa to play golf in Chiang Mai?

For a golf holiday most Australians do not need a visa in advance. Thailand's visa-free stay for Australian passport holders was reported cut to 30 days, tourism only, from 15 September 2026. A one or two-week golf trip fits easily inside that. Your passport needs at least six months of validity, and you must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before you land. Entry rules have changed several times recently, so confirm on the Thai embassy or Smartraveller site the week you travel.

What is the best time of year for Australians to golf in Chiang Mai?

November to February is the best golf weather: cool mornings, dry fairways and clear mountain views. That lines up with the Australian summer break, so it is also the dearest and busiest window, and December to January tee times need early booking. Avoid March. It is the peak of burning season, when air quality is often poor, and Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, right in the haze. June to August, the Australian winter, is Chiang Mai's green season: cheaper rounds, some rain, mornings usually playable.

Should Australians bring their own golf clubs to Chiang Mai?

For trips of four rounds or more, most Australian golfers we host bring their own set. Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines and Scoot all carry golf bags, but sports-equipment rules and fees differ by fare type, so check yours before you book. Domestic low-cost carriers out of Bangkok usually charge extra for a golf bag, so a through ticket on one airline is safer. Rental sets are available at the major courses, typically around ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 a set (confirm at booking). Quality varies, so rent only for a short trip.
