Which destination has better golf courses?
Bali wins on spectacle, Chiang Mai on conditioning and depth. New Kuta's ocean cliffs and Bali National's island green photograph better than anything up north.
Bali National was rebuilt by Nelson and Haworth and reopened in the mid-2010s with fast greens and a postcard island green (Bali National, accessed 2026-09-07). New Kuta sits on the Uluwatu clifftops with holes that run to the edge of the Indian Ocean. For a single unforgettable round, Bali is genuinely hard to beat.
Chiang Mai answers with maintenance and pedigree. Chiang Mai Highlands, a Lee Schmidt design, is widely rated the best-conditioned course in the region, with 27 holes of paspalum and heavy bunkering. Is golf cheaper in Bali or Chiang Mai?

When should I go, and do the seasons clash?
The peak windows are nearly opposite. Bali is best April to October; Chiang Mai is best November to February. Pick the destination that matches when you can travel.
Bali's dry season runs April to October, best June to September for low rain and humidity, while November to March brings the west monsoon and heavy showers (Virgin Australia Bali climate guide, accessed 2026-09-07). Bali showers are often short, so a wet-season round is rarely a washout, but greens hold water.

What about air quality and burning season?
This is Chiang Mai's real weakness. Roughly mid-January to mid-April, worst in March, farm burning pushes air quality past AQI 150 and sometimes over 300.
We will not hide it. In recent years, early-April readings have pushed Chiang Mai's PM2.5 past 300 and ranked the city among the world's most polluted for days at a stretch. How does caddie culture and on-course service compare?
Both are Southeast Asian caddie cultures: one caddie per golfer, mostly women, not optional. Service standards are high in both, and tipping norms are similar.
In Chiang Mai the caddie fee to the course is ฿300 to ฿400, with a direct cash tip of ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, up to ฿700 to ฿1,000 for an excellent premium-course caddie (CMGT Golf, 2026). Hand it over at the bag drop after the round. Bali runs the same model, with caddie and tip bundled into the higher all-in rate. Neither destination lets you carry your own bag or opt out of a caddie, so budget for it on both.
Which is better beyond the golf?
Bali wins for a mixed group: surf, beaches and nightlife alongside golf. Chiang Mai wins for temples, food and calm, at a lower daily spend.
Bali suits golfers travelling with non-golfing partners who want beach days between rounds. Chiang Mai's draw is different: old-city temples, night markets, cooking classes and northern Thai food, wrapped around your tee times.
