Bangkok Stopover Chiang Mai Golf: Is the Break Worth It?

Bangkok stopover before Chiang Mai golf: when one night in Bangkok pays off, how to get clubs onto the domestic flight, and when to book your first tee time.

A Bangkok stopover before Chiang Mai golf is worth it if you land after about 16:00 or hold separate tickets. If you land in the morning on one ticket, fly straight on. The domestic hop takes about 70 minutes. What decides it is your first tee time. A tired golfer who just crossed Bangkok at rush hour plays a poor round at ฿3,000+ a go.

We set up golf trips on the ground in Chiang Mai, and most of our long-haul guests come through Bangkok. Below is how we decide between stopping over and connecting, how we get clubs onto the domestic flight, and how we time the first round.

Is a Bangkok stopover worth it before a Chiang Mai golf trip?

For late arrivals and separate tickets, yes. For morning arrivals on one through ticket, no. Flying on the same day gives you a full extra day in Chiang Mai.

The flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes roughly 1 hour 05 to 1 hour 20 minutes depending on the airline, according to the Expatolife Bangkok to Chiang Mai transport guide (accessed 2026-10-17). There are flights from early morning to late evening, so connecting is rarely the hard part. Fatigue and baggage are.

A stopover works when:

  • Your long-haul flight lands at Suvarnabhumi after mid-afternoon, so you would reach your Chiang Mai hotel near midnight.
  • Your domestic flight is on a separate ticket, so a delay means a missed flight and a new fare.
  • Your domestic flight leaves from Don Mueang, and you would be crossing Bangkok with a golf bag.
  • You actually want a day in Bangkok for food, a massage or a round there.

Skip the stopover when you land before noon on a single ticket that checks your bag through to CNX. Sleep in Chiang Mai, wake near the courses, and use the saved night for an extra round or a rest day.

How do I get my golf clubs onto the Bangkok to Chiang Mai flight?

Check them as your one domestic checked piece. Thai Airways economy now allows one 23 kg bag on domestic flights. Low-cost carriers charge a sports-equipment fee.

Thai Airways has moved to a piece-based baggage system in 2026. On flights within Thailand, economy passengers get one checked bag up to 23 kg and Royal Silk passengers up to 32 kg, as Executive Traveller reported (accessed 2026-10-17). A golf travel bag usually counts as that one piece. So if you also check a suitcase, you may pay for a second bag on the domestic leg even when your long-haul ticket allows two.

Bangkok Airways reports a 20 kg economy allowance on domestic routes, plus a discounted excess rate for golf sets that do not fit inside your allowance, per SeatGuru's Bangkok Airways baggage page (accessed 2026-10-17). Thai AirAsia and Nok Air sell sports equipment as a paid add-on, and the online price is normally lower than the airport counter price. Fees and rules change, so check your own fare a week before you fly.

Will my clubs be checked through to Chiang Mai?

On one through ticket on a single airline or its partners, usually yes. On separate tickets, never. You collect the bag in Bangkok and check it in again.

That difference matters more than most guides suggest. With a through ticket, the airline is responsible if your bag misses the connection, and it normally sends the bag on to CNX. With separate tickets, you clear immigration at Suvarnabhumi, wait for an oversized golf bag at the special-baggage belt, then check in again for the domestic flight. We plan 2.5 to 3 hours between flights for that, and more if the domestic flight leaves from Don Mueang (CMGT Golf, 2026).

Confirm the through-check at your first check-in desk and look at the tag: it should read CNX, not BKK. If it reads BKK, you will collect the bag in Bangkok.

Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang: does the Bangkok airport matter?

It matters a lot. Long-haul flights land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and many low-cost Chiang Mai flights leave from Don Mueang (DMK). Moving between them means a road transfer with your clubs.

Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways mainly fly to Chiang Mai from Suvarnabhumi. Thai AirAsia and Nok Air mainly use Don Mueang. Between the two airports, we plan 60 to 90 minutes by road and longer at evening rush hour. A golf bag also rules out the train and makes a small taxi awkward (CMGT Golf, 2026).

The cheap fare from DMK is often not cheap once you add the transfer, the sports-equipment fee and the stress. When guests ask us to check their flights, our usual advice is a Suvarnabhumi to Chiang Mai flight on the same ticket as the long-haul, or a stopover night if the domestic flight is from Don Mueang.

Where should I stay in Bangkok for one night?

If your onward flight is from Suvarnabhumi, stay at or near the airport. A night in central Bangkok means two road transfers with your clubs, and two lots of traffic risk.

A one-night stopover is for sleep, not sightseeing. Airport-area hotels let you leave the golf bag with the concierge, eat, sleep and get back to departures in minutes. Ask for a late checkout if your Chiang Mai flight leaves after lunch, so you can rest through the hottest part of the day. If your onward flight is from Don Mueang, stay near Don Mueang instead and do the cross-city drive the evening you land, when you are not racing a departure time.

If you do want an evening in the city, store the clubs at the airport hotel and go in light. The trade-off is that you see little of Bangkok on one night, and some golfers add a second night for that reason.

When should I book my first tee time in Chiang Mai?

Book it for the morning after you land in Chiang Mai, 07:00 to 08:00, at a course within 30 minutes of your hotel. Keep the long drives and the hardest course for later in the trip.

The early slot is not just about jet lag. Chiang Mai highs often sit around 30C even in the November to February cool season, and afternoons get hotter from March. Our guide to the best tee times in Chiang Mai explains the timing by month.

For the first round we pick courses close to town:

  • North Hill City Golf Club: about 15 minutes from the airport, good conditioning for the price. We book it 1 to 2 days ahead.
  • Lanna Golf Club: about 10 minutes from the Old City, 27 holes, and walking is usually allowed.
  • Mae Jo Golf Club & Resort: about 20 minutes out with Doi Suthep views. The honest downside is that, in our experience, its conditioning trails the other premium courses and play can be slow.

Save Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa (green-season all-in ฿3,400) and Alpine Golf Resort (green-season all-in ฿3,700, CMGT Golf rates, Apr-Oct 2026) for day three or later, when you are rested enough to enjoy them.

Can I play a round in Bangkok during the stopover?

You can, but it only makes sense if you stay two nights. On a one-night stopover, a Bangkok round plus a domestic flight makes for a very long day.

Bangkok has plenty of courses near both airports. The problem is the schedule: a morning round, lunch, a road transfer and a 70-minute flight with an oversized bag. Bangkok courses also tend to be busier at weekends, and the lowland heat and humidity are harder going than the north. If you want golf in both cities, plan two nights in Bangkok and read our first-timer mistakes guide before you cram too many rounds in. Most of our guests keep their rounds for Chiang Mai, where the courses are less crowded and the mountain backdrops are the point of the trip.

How do I get from CNX airport to my hotel or the first course?

Use a pre-booked private car. CNX is about 4 km from the Old City, a taxi costs ฿150-200, and a booked driver fits a golf bag without any argument.

Grab is fine for a light bag at midday. It is less reliable for a 06:30 pickup with a full tour bag, and some cars cannot take one. A pre-booked private round trip to a course runs about ฿1,400-2,500 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Our Chiang Mai airport transfer guide covers the options, and our neighbourhood guide for golfers helps you pick a hotel close to the courses you will play.

Does a package make the Bangkok connection easier?

Yes on the Chiang Mai side. A package handles the CNX pickup, tee times that fit your arrival, and every drive to a course. It does not cover the flights.

When you book each round yourself, you are also lining up drivers, caddies and tee times around a flight that might be late. On a package we plan around your actual flight number. If the Bangkok leg is late, we move the driver and, where the course allows, the tee time. A package covers green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver, airport transfers and someone on the ground to call.

It does not always pay off. For one round on a short visit, booking the course yourself can cost less. For short trips, look at the Layover package, 2 nights and 2 rounds, or the Weekend Warrior, 3 nights and 3 rounds. For a longer stay after the flight, the Northern Value, 4 nights and 3 rounds builds in a rest day. Send us your flight times through our Chiang Mai golf packages and enquiry page and we will reply with a written quote.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop over in Bangkok before a Chiang Mai golf trip?

Stop over if your long-haul flight lands late in the evening, if your domestic flight is on a separate ticket, or if you want a day in Bangkok anyway. If you land in the morning on a single through ticket, connect the same day and sleep in Chiang Mai. The flight north takes roughly 1 hour 05 to 1 hour 20 minutes, so a same-day connection costs you an afternoon, not a day. The stopover's real job is protecting your first tee time from jet lag and missed connections. It does not save money: it adds a hotel night and often a road transfer.

Can I take my golf clubs on the Bangkok to Chiang Mai flight?

Yes. Every carrier on the route accepts golf bags as checked baggage. Under Thai Airways' 2026 piece-based rules, economy on domestic flights includes one checked bag up to 23 kg, and a golf bag generally uses that piece. Bangkok Airways reports a 20 kg economy allowance and a discounted excess rate for golf sets. Low-cost carriers usually sell sports equipment as a paid add-on, and it normally costs less booked online ahead than at the counter. Pack shoes and balls inside the travel bag to stay at one piece, and confirm the rules on your exact fare before you fly.

Can I play golf on the day I arrive in Chiang Mai?

You can, but we rarely advise it after a long-haul flight. If you land at CNX before about 10:00, North Hill City Golf Club is around 15 minutes from the airport and you could tee off early afternoon. The catch is heat: Chiang Mai afternoons often reach around 30C even in cool season, and get hotter from March. Our standard plan is arrival day off, then a 07:00 to 08:00 tee time on day two at a nearby course. The round you lose costs less than a round played on four hours of sleep.

Which Bangkok airport do Chiang Mai flights leave from?

Both. Full-service flights on Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways mostly use Suvarnabhumi (BKK), where nearly all long-haul flights arrive. Low-cost carriers such as Thai AirAsia and Nok Air mostly fly from Don Mueang (DMK). If your long-haul flight lands at BKK and your domestic flight leaves from DMK, you have to cross Bangkok by road with your clubs, which we plan at 60 to 90 minutes and longer in rush hour. That cross-city transfer is the most common reason we tell golfers to either fly BKK to CNX or stay the night.

Does a CMGT Golf package include the Bangkok leg?

Our packages start on the ground in Chiang Mai: airport pickup at CNX, hotel, tee times, green fees, caddies, carts and a private driver to every course. We can plan your trip around a Bangkok stopover, including tee times that match your arrival day, but we do not sell the international or domestic flights. Tell us your flight times when you enquire through our golf page and we will set the first round to fit. CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven: we send a written quote, and your booking is confirmed when you pay the deposit.
