The best area to base a Chiang Mai golf trip is Nimman or the Old City for most groups: both are roughly 10 to 15 minutes from the airport, central to a valley of courses 10 to 45 minutes away, and full of places to eat after the round. Stay on a golf resort only if most of your rounds are at that course.
Where should most golfers stay in Chiang Mai?
Stay central, in Nimman or around the Old City moat. Courses ring the valley, so a central base keeps every transfer short and evenings easy.
Chiang Mai's golf works like a wheel. The city sits in the middle and the courses spread out around it. Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the centre. Mae Jo is about 20 minutes north. The Gassan courses in Lamphun are roughly 30 to 45 minutes south. Royal Chiang Mai and Alpine are both listed at around 40 minutes by Golfasian's Chiang Mai course pages (accessed 2026-10-03).
If you sleep in the middle, no single day turns into a long transfer. If you sleep on the edge, the courses on the far side can become close to an hour each way. That is why we start almost every trip plan from a central hotel and then add a resort night only when it pays off.
A central base also gives you options when plans change. If rain closes in over the hills to the north, it is easy to swap a round to a flatter course in the south or east without anyone sitting in a van for 90 minutes. Edge and resort bases make that kind of late swap far more painful.
For a deeper look at what each course is like once you arrive, see our ranking of the best golf courses in Chiang Mai, or browse our Chiang Mai golf packages to see how courses are grouped into trips.
How do the four main bases compare?
Nimman and the Old City win on balance. The riverside suits couples and mixed groups. A resort stay suits golfers repeating one course.
| Base | To CNX airport | Closest courses | Evenings | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nimman / Santitham | ~3 km, 10-15 min | North Hill, Lanna, Mae Jo | Bars, cafes, rooftop dining | Short trips, groups who want nightlife | Busy traffic at rush hour |
| Old City (inside or on the moat) | ~4-5 km, 15 min | Lanna, Gymkhana | Night markets, temples, quieter bars | First-timers, mixed golf and culture | Narrow lanes, some hotels lack van access |
| Riverside / Night Bazaar | ~5-6 km, 15-20 min | Gymkhana, Gassan courses to the south | River restaurants, Night Bazaar | Couples, non-golfing partners | Fewer mid-range golf-friendly hotels |
| On-course resort | Often 30-45 min+ | The resort course itself | Mostly hotel dining | 4+ rounds on one course | Long drive to the city and other courses |
Why is Nimman the default base for short golf trips?
Nimman is about 3 km from the airport, close to the northern courses, and has the best spread of modern hotels for golfers with club bags.
Geckoroutes puts the airport about 3.1 km from Nimman and 10 to 15 minutes by taxi (accessed 2026-10-03). On a Layover 2-night or Weekend Warrior 3-night trip, that matters. You land, check in, and on a morning arrival you can often be on a course the same afternoon.
North Hill Golf Club sits roughly 15 minutes from the airport, which makes it a natural arrival-day or departure-day round from Nimman. The newer hotels here tend to have larger rooms, gyms and lifts, which is less trivial than it sounds when four players arrive with four bags and a week of clothes.
Nimman also suits groups with mixed energy levels. The players who want an early night can walk two minutes to a quiet cafe for dinner, and the ones who want a late one have rooftop bars and live music on the same street. Nobody needs a taxi to get home.
The downside: Nimmanhaemin Road and the Huay Kaew junction clog in the late afternoon, roughly 16:30 to 19:00. If your round finishes late, the last few kilometres back can be slow. We usually book morning tee times from Nimman partly for this reason, along with the cooler temperatures.
Is the Old City a good golf base?
Yes, especially for first-time visitors. Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes away, and temples and night markets fill the non-golf hours.
The Old City is the walled square inside the moat. It works well for the Culture and Golf 5-night style of trip, where rounds alternate with temples, cooking classes and markets. Lanna Golf Club is the closest course to the Old City and a relaxed, good-value round that locals play often. Chiang Mai Gymkhana, founded in 1898, is a short drive for a 9-hole heritage round on one of the oldest courses in Thailand.
Hotels range from small boutique guesthouses to larger properties on the moat road. For golf groups we lean towards the moat-side hotels, because a van can pull up at the door and the drive out of town avoids the tightest lanes.
For evenings, our after-round nightlife guide covers where golfers actually go from both Nimman and the Old City.
When does a riverside base make sense?
When non-golfers are on the trip. The riverside has some of the best dining and calmest hotels, at the cost of slightly longer drives north.
The Ping River and Night Bazaar area, east of the Old City, suits couples where one partner plays and one does not. The non-golfer has the river cafes, spas and the Night Bazaar on the doorstep, and the evening meal is a short walk along the water.
It also sits on the right side of town for the south-bound run to the Gassan courses in Lamphun. Gassan Legacy and Gassan Panorama are both well-kept resort layouts that sit comfortably in a riverside-based itinerary, and green season rates there are usually lower than the cool-season peak. We confirm the current green fee, caddie and cart costs in your written quote.
The trade-off is that northern courses like Mae Jo or Royal Chiang Mai add 10 minutes or more against a Nimman start. Over a 4-round trip that can mean more than an hour of extra van time across the week. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.
Should you stay on a golf resort instead?
Only if most of your rounds are on that course. Otherwise a resort base turns every other round and every dinner into a long drive.
Staying at Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa is genuinely good. The course is consistently well presented, the mountain views are some of the best in the valley, and the spa makes it an easy sell for a partner who does not play. But you are 40 minutes or more from the city, and Gassan Khuntan or the courses towards Doi Inthanon become very long transfers from there.
Our honest rule: one or two resort nights in the middle of a trip, never the whole stay, unless the group explicitly wants a quiet golf-only retreat. A Highlands Classic 5-night trip can be built either way, and we will quote both if you ask.
How much does the base change transfer costs?
A central base keeps private round trips at the low end of the ฿1,400-2,500 range. Edge bases push most rounds to the top of it.
Booking each transfer yourself is possible. Grab works well inside the city, but it is risky for early pickups, returns from remote courses and four full-size bags. Our airport transfer guide covers the arrival leg in detail. A package folds the driver into one price, with the same driver waiting at the clubhouse when you finish.
Booking with us takes three steps. Send your dates, group size, preferred area and course wishlist. We reply with a written quote that lists hotels, tee times, transfers and caddie arrangements. You confirm with a deposit, and we lock in tee times and the driver.
Does the season change where you should stay?
Slightly. In burning season (roughly February to April) air quality can be poor everywhere in the valley, so no base fixes it.
Smoke collects across the whole Chiang Mai basin, so moving from Nimman to a resort does not help. PM2.5 readings in the city can climb well into unhealthy levels on bad days. Check IQAir's Chiang Mai readings daily if you travel then, and read our burning season golf guide before you book March dates.
In the cool high season (roughly November to February) central hotels fill first and cost most. Book your base early if you want to be near the moat or on Nimman. In the green season (roughly May to October), mornings are usually playable before afternoon storms, and central hotels have more choice at lower rates.
Which base fits which package?
Short packages fit Nimman, culture-heavy packages fit the Old City, and long trips work best split between town and one resort.
- Layover 2-night: Nimman, closest to the airport.
- Northern Value 4-night: Nimman or Old City, northern courses.
- Culture and Golf 5-night: Old City.
- Lanna Signature 7-night: city base plus a resort stay.
Tell us your preferred area on the Chiang Mai golf packages page and we build tee times, pickups and drivers around it. For pairing courses by direction so each day stays efficient, see our course pairings itinerary.

What is the best area to stay in Chiang Mai for a golf trip?
For most golf groups we recommend Nimman or the Old City edge near the moat. Both sit roughly 10 to 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport, both put you in the middle of the valley so no course is a punishing transfer, and both have plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance after the round. Pick Nimman if you want modern hotels, cafes and a livelier evening. Pick the Old City if you want temples, the night markets and a quieter, walkable base. Golfers playing four or more rounds at one resort can stay on site instead, but you give up the city evenings.
Should I stay at a golf resort or in Chiang Mai city?
Stay in the city if you are playing several different courses, travelling with non-golfers, or want restaurants and nightlife after the round. Chiang Mai's courses ring the valley, so a central base keeps most transfers roughly 10 to 45 minutes. Stay on a resort if most of your rounds are at that one course and you value rolling out of bed to the first tee. The trade-off is real: resort stays usually put you 40 minutes or more from the city for dinner, and every other course becomes a longer drive. Many of our groups split the trip, a few nights in town and one or two on a resort.
How far are Chiang Mai golf courses from the city?
Most courses sit 30 to 45 minutes from the city centre by private car. Golfasian's course pages (accessed October 2026) list Lanna Golf Club at about 10 minutes from the centre and Mae Jo at about 20 minutes. North Hill is roughly 15 minutes from the airport. The Gassan courses in Lamphun run around 30 to 45 minutes, with Gassan Khuntan the furthest of the three. Weekday rush hour can add 10 to 15 minutes, which is why we set pickup times from your actual hotel rather than from a map estimate.
Is Nimman or the Old City better for golfers?
Nimman is slightly better for golfers on short trips, because it sits around 3 km from the airport and has newer hotels with gyms, lifts and larger rooms for club bags. The Old City is better for first-time visitors and mixed groups, because the temples, the Sunday Walking Street and Lanna Golf Club are all close by. Course transfer times are within a few minutes of each other from either base. The honest downside of the Old City is that some guesthouses sit on narrow lanes where a van cannot reach the door, so check access for golf bags.
Can a golf package be built around any hotel I choose?
Yes. Our packages are built around where you want to sleep, not the other way round. Tell us the hotel or area you prefer, the courses you want to play and your dates, and we plan pickup times, tee times and the private driver around that base. If a base makes one of your chosen courses an awkward transfer, we will say so and suggest a swap. CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven, so you get a written quote first and confirm with a deposit. Send the details through the golf enquiry page.
