Hang Dong suits golfers who want a quiet villa base about 15 km south of the Old City, close to North Hill, the Gassan courses and Inthanon. It works well for a golf week spent south and east of the city, and the airport is a short drive away. It is the wrong base if most of your rounds are at the northern courses such as Mae Jo or Royal Chiang Mai.
Where is Hang Dong, and why do golfers stay there?
Hang Dong is a semi-rural district roughly 15 km south of Chiang Mai's Old City. Golfers stay there for the pool villas, quiet nights and quick airport access.
The district runs south from the city along Chiang Mai-Hang Dong Road (Route 108), toward Doi Inthanon. Thai Holiday Guide puts Baan Tawai, Hang Dong's woodcarving village, about 15 km south of the city (accessed 2026-10-26). The Hang Dong district page on Wikipedia covers its sub-districts and its long-running craft trade.
For golfers, the reasons are practical. Most accommodation is private pool villas and low-rise resorts with room to store four golf bags, and evenings are quiet. You give up city nightlife for an easy 6am pickup. If you are still choosing between areas, our guide to where to base yourself for a Chiang Mai golf trip compares Hang Dong with Nimman, the Old City and the resort areas to the north.
Which golf courses are closest to a Hang Dong hotel?
North Hill is inside the district. The Gassan courses in Lamphun and Chiangmai Inthanon in Chom Thong are the next nearest, and you reach all of them without crossing the city centre.
North Hill Golf Club is south of town off Chiang Mai-Hang Dong Road. Golfasian's course listing (accessed 2026-10-26) gives it as 18 holes, par 72. The Gassan cluster comes next: Gassan Legacy, Gassan Panorama and Gassan Khuntan. Further south, toward the mountain, is Chiangmai Inthanon Golf & Natural Resort in Chom Thong district.

How long are transfers from Hang Dong to the courses?
Plan on 10-20 minutes to North Hill and roughly 35-60 minutes to Gassan Legacy, Panorama or Inthanon. Northern courses can take well over an hour at peak times.
Early starts help a lot. At 6am the roads are clear, and the run from Hang Dong to Lamphun is easy. The return leg between 4pm and 6pm is slower, when Hang Dong Road and the Canal Road fill with commuter traffic. Allow an extra 15-20 minutes on any afternoon transfer, more if you have a dinner booking or a massage scheduled.
A pre-booked private round trip to a course in Chiang Mai usually costs ฿1,400-2,500 (CMGT Golf, 2026), depending on distance and vehicle size. Grab is fine for an evening into town. We would not rely on it for a 6am pickup from a villa down a narrow soi with four tour bags. Our Chiang Mai airport transfer guide covers your options on arrival.
Is Hang Dong convenient for the airport?
Yes. North Hill, inside Hang Dong district, is about 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport, which makes the area a good fit for arrival-day and departure-day rounds.
That airport figure comes from Golfasian's North Hill listing (accessed 2026-10-26). On a short trip it matters a lot. If you land mid-morning, you can check in, eat, and still play North Hill in the afternoon. On your last day, a morning round finishes in time for an evening flight, with a shower at the villa in between. Our Layover package is built for exactly that kind of trip, with 2 nights and 2 rounds.
What is the food like in Hang Dong?
Good local Thai food and a handful of Western cafes, but they are spread out and you need a car. Expect clubhouse lunches, local dinners, and one or two nights in town.
Hang Dong Road has the northern Thai basics: khao soi shops, grilled pork and sticky rice stalls, and morning markets. The Kad Farang area along the main road has Western-style restaurants, bakeries and a supermarket, which is useful for stocking a villa fridge with water, fruit and beer. Most golf days end with a late clubhouse lunch anyway, so dinner tends to be light.
What Hang Dong lacks is restaurants within walking distance. You will not step out of your villa to a street full of options the way you can in Nimman. Our guests usually book the driver for one evening in town, often for a massage and dinner. See our note on Thai massage recovery after a round for when to schedule it.
What kind of hotels do golfers book in Hang Dong?
Mostly private pool villas and low-rise resorts with room for bags and groups, not city high-rises. They suit four-balls sharing a house.
The classic Hang Dong setup is a four-ball sharing a three or four-bedroom pool villa. You get a private pool for the afternoon, room for bags and shoes to dry, and one pickup point for the driver. Splitting a villa four ways often costs about the same per head as a mid-range city hotel. Boutique resorts along the road toward Baan Tawai suit couples who want quiet over nightlife.
Check two things before you book. First, check the exact location: a listing that says "Hang Dong" can be anywhere from the edge of the city to 10 km further south, which changes every transfer time in the table above. Second, check the access road, because some villa sois are too narrow for a van. If you book the villa yourself, send us the address before you pay and we will tell you how the transfers work from there.
Does Hang Dong work for a full week of golf?
Yes, for a week of five or six rounds south and east of the city. Pair North Hill, the Gassan courses and Inthanon, and add one northern round at most.
Here is a sample Hang Dong week: North Hill on the afternoon you arrive, then Gassan Legacy, a rest day, Gassan Panorama, Inthanon, and a final round at North Hill before an evening flight. Every transfer stays south of the city. If you want one premium course further afield, Chiangmai Highlands is the one worth the longer drive (฿3,400 all-in, green season 2026).
Two honest warnings. Gassan Khuntan has the most dramatic scenery, but it is usually the least well-conditioned of the Gassan courses and the longest transfer. Recent reviews of Inthanon also mention uneven conditioning. Our course pairings itinerary guide shows how to order the courses so a weaker round is not your last one.
What about non-golf days in Hang Dong?
Hang Dong is the best base for Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain, and for craft shopping at Baan Tawai. Both are closer than from the city.
Baan Tawai has a large number of woodcarving, lacquer and textile shops, and many open from late morning, per Thai Holiday Guide. It makes an easy half-day after a morning round. Doi Inthanon is a natural rest-day trip from the south, and from Hang Dong you skip the drive out of the city. Our guide to the best way to experience Doi Inthanon covers timing and the twin pagodas.
When should golfers avoid staying in Hang Dong?
Avoid it in burning season, roughly mid-January to mid-April, when valley haze hits Hang Dong as hard as the city.
Quieter does not mean cleaner air. On 1 April 2026, PM2.5 in Chiang Mai went above 300, and on 2 April the city ranked as the world's second most polluted (CMGT Golf verified facts, 2026). March is usually the worst month. If you have to travel then, check IQAir's Chiang Mai page daily and read our burning season golf guide. November to February is the best time for a Hang Dong golf week, with cooler mornings and firmer fairways.
Package or DIY: which works better from Hang Dong?
For one or two rounds, booking direct can cost less. From about three rounds, a package with a private driver usually comes out ahead on cost and convenience.
Because Hang Dong is so spread out, the numbers change. Every round needs a reliable early pickup, and you cannot count on a taxi turning up at a villa soi at 5:30am. A CMGT Golf package includes green fees, caddies, carts, the hotel, a private driver, airport transfers, and local support if you need to change a tee time. Caddie tips are not included and are paid in cash, usually ฿400-600 per 18 holes, as covered in our cart and caddie fees guide.
For a longer stay, we can build the Lanna Signature (7 nights, 5 rounds) around a southern base. To get a quote, send us your dates and preferred courses through our Chiang Mai golf packages page. We reply with a priced itinerary, and a deposit confirms the booking.

Is Hang Dong a good base for a Chiang Mai golf trip?
Yes, if most of your rounds are south of the city. Hang Dong is about 15 km south of the Old City. North Hill Golf Club is inside the district, off Chiang Mai-Hang Dong Road, and you can reach the Gassan courses in Lamphun and Chiangmai Inthanon in Chom Thong without crossing the city centre. It suits golfers who want a pool villa, quiet evenings and early starts. It is a poor fit for a trip built around Mae Jo, Royal Chiang Mai or Summit Green Valley, because each of those mornings means driving through or around the city to the north.
How far is Hang Dong from Chiang Mai airport?
Close. Golfasian lists North Hill Golf Club, which is in Hang Dong district, at about 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport. Most Hang Dong hotels and villas are on the same corridor, so plan on roughly 15 to 30 minutes from the terminal, depending on where your property is and the time of day. That makes Hang Dong one of the easiest bases for a late arrival or an early departure, and it is why we often use it for short trips with a round on arrival or departure day.
Which golf courses are closest to Hang Dong?
North Hill Golf Club is the closest, inside the district itself. The next cluster is the three Gassan courses in Lamphun (Legacy, Panorama and Khuntan), reached across the south of the valley. Khuntan is the furthest of the three. Chiangmai Inthanon Golf & Natural Resort is further south in Chom Thong district, toward Doi Inthanon. Lanna Golf Club and the Gymkhana are in the city, so you can reach them but you drive into traffic. The northern courses are the furthest from a Hang Dong base.
Are there restaurants in Hang Dong, or do I need to go into the city?
There is enough for a golf week, but it is spread out and you need a car to get around. Expect local Thai restaurants and markets along Hang Dong Road, a cluster of Western-style cafes and restaurants around Kad Farang, and clubhouse lunches at the courses. You will not find the choice of Nimman or the Old City. Most of our Hang Dong guests eat locally on most nights and book the driver for one or two evenings in town.
Is a golf package cheaper than booking Hang Dong hotels and rounds myself?
It depends on how many rounds you play. For one round, booking the green fee direct and taking a taxi can cost less than any package. From about three rounds up, the private driver, tee-time handling and course pickups start to pay for themselves. That matters more in a spread-out area like Hang Dong, where Grab is unreliable for 6am starts. CMGT Golf works on enquiry: send your dates and courses through the golf page, we reply with a quote, and a deposit confirms the booking.
