San Kamphaeng Chiang Mai Golf: Should You Base East?

San Kamphaeng and Mae On put you close to Highlands, Alpine and the hot springs. Here is when an east-side base beats the city commute, and when it doesn't.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team25 Oct 20269 min read

San Kamphaeng and Mae On make a good golf base if Chiangmai Highlands and Alpine are at least half your rounds. Highlands is about 50 minutes from the city and Alpine about 35, according to Olsen Tours (accessed 2026-10-25). Out east you get quiet resort evenings and hot springs about 36 km from town. If your course list leans north, stay in the city. Most groups do best with a split stay, and we route trips that way every season.

Where exactly is "east" for Chiang Mai golf?

East means San Kamphaeng district and Mae On, the foothills past the handicraft road, where Alpine, Highlands and the San Kamphaeng hot springs sit.

Mae On was carved out of San Kamphaeng district, so people use both names for the same stretch. The hot springs are officially in Mae On, about 36 km east of the city (Thai Holiday Guide, accessed 2026-10-25). Leave the Old City on the San Kamphaeng road and you pass the umbrella and craft villages first. After that it turns into rice fields, then the hills begin.

Two premium courses are out here. Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa is a 27-hole Lee Schmidt design that opened in 2005, with elevation changes and long views back across the valley. Alpine Golf Resort is a Ron Garl design that has hosted Asian Tour events, and it plays as a serious test with water and well-protected greens. The Gassan courses in Lamphun are south of this area, and the northern group (Royal Chiang Mai, Mae Jo, North Hill, Summit Green Valley) is on the far side of the valley. Tell us which of these you want to play on our Chiang Mai golf trip page and we will map them against a base for you.

Which courses does an east base actually help?

Highlands and Alpine benefit most. The Gassan courses are a fair reach. Northern courses get further away, not closer.

On a five-round trip with only Highlands and Alpine out east, it makes more sense to stay in the city and accept two longer mornings. Basing east starts to pay off when the east side makes up at least half your golf. For pairing courses by geography, see our Chiang Mai golf course pairings guide.

How much time does staying east save?

Roughly 35 to 50 minutes each way per round at Alpine and Highlands. Over three rounds that is about four or five hours less in a van.

Olsen Tours puts Highlands at about 50 minutes from Chiang Mai and Alpine at about 35 (Olsen Tours, Highlands and Alpine, accessed 2026-10-25). Hotel listings put Highlands 25 to 29 km from the centre. Stay at the Highlands resort and the commute disappears. From a Mae On guesthouse it is short.

The real gain is in the morning. The cool season from November is the best golf of the year, and early starts are when the air is crisp and the greens are freshest. From the city, a 7:00 tee time at Highlands means a pickup before 6:00. From out east you can take the first tee time and still have breakfast.

What is the San Kamphaeng hot springs routine after golf?

Finish at Highlands, drive a short way to the springs, soak for a couple of hundred baht, and be back at your east-side hotel before dark.

Entry is 100 THB for foreign adults. The mineral pool costs about 50 THB more, and private soaking rooms are roughly 200 to 300 THB per group. It is listed as open 07:00 to 18:00 daily (Thai Holiday Guide, accessed 2026-10-25). The water comes out of the ground close to boiling, and vendors sell baskets of eggs to cook in the hottest pools.

After 18 holes in the foothills, a mineral soak does a lot for tired legs and backs. Highlands also has its own spa on site, so you have two ways to recover without driving back to town. For more recovery options, see our Thai massage recovery guide for golfers.

When is the best season to base yourself east?

November to mid-January is the sweet spot: cool mornings, dry fairways and clear views from the Highlands tees. Green season is cheaper but wetter.

From November the rains have usually eased and the foothills are green after the monsoon. This is peak demand, so tee times at Highlands and Alpine fill early on weekends and rates sit above the green-season figures in the table. Green season, roughly May to October, brings lower all-in rates and quieter courses, with the trade-off of afternoon storms and softer, slower fairways. The middle of the dry season brings heat and, later, smoke, which we cover below. If your dates are flexible, tell us and we will suggest the window that fits your budget and the courses you want.

What is the honest downside of staying east?

Evenings are quiet, the food choice is limited, and taxis are scarce. If your group wants night markets and bars, you will spend the time saved on golf driving back to town.

Here is what an east base costs you:

  • Food and nightlife. Out east you have resort dining, local Thai restaurants and not much else. Nimman and the Old City have far more choice in the evening. Our after-round nightlife guide is mostly in the city.
  • Transport back. Grab drivers are scarce in Mae On in the late afternoon, and a full golf bag rules out small cars. Without a booked driver you can end up stuck at a clubhouse.
  • Northern courses. Royal Chiang Mai, Mae Jo and Summit Green Valley become long drives across the valley.
  • Air quality in season. Roughly from late January into April, burning-season haze covers the whole valley, and the foothills do not escape it. Check IQAir Chiang Mai daily and avoid March if you can.

Should I split my stay between the city and the east?

For most trips of four nights or more, yes. Spend two or three nights east for Highlands and Alpine, then move to the city for the northern courses and the evenings.

The hotel change sounds like a hassle, but it takes about an hour when a driver moves the bags, and we usually schedule it straight after a round so you lose no golf time. Our neighbourhood guide to basing a Chiang Mai golf trip covers the city-side options.

Which packages fit an east-side trip?

The Highlands Classic and Lanna Signature trips suit a split stay best. Shorter trips usually work better from a single base.

The Highlands Classic 5-night package has four rounds, enough to put two of them in the east. The Lanna Signature 7-night gives five rounds and room for a hot springs day. If you only want one Alpine round, the Alpine Stay & Play covers one night and one round.

For a market reference, Olsen Tours lists a Highlands round for 4 golfers at ฿5,700 per person in the 2026-27 high season. That price includes green fee, caddie, cart and transport, with a ฿400 caddie tip on top (Olsen Tours, accessed 2026-10-25). That is another operator's price, not ours. We work by enquiry: tell us your dates and courses on our Chiang Mai golf packages page and we will send a quote, confirmed with a deposit.

When does booking direct beat a package out east?

For a single round if you already have a car or driver. Once you play two or more east-side rounds and need transfers, a package usually saves money and hassle.

If you are staying at the Highlands resort and want one round, booking with the course directly is often cheapest. Packages pay off once you add hotel nights, private transfers across the valley, tee-time changes when storms hit, and on-the-ground support. Our direct vs agent booking breakdown goes through the numbers. Bring cash for caddie tips either way: ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 is typical, handed to your caddie at the end of the round. See our caddie culture and tipping guide.

How do you book an east-side golf trip with us?

Send an enquiry with your dates, group size and course wish list. We reply with a routed plan and a quote, and your trip is confirmed once the deposit is paid.

The steps are simple:

  1. Enquire. Tell us your travel dates, how many golfers, handicaps if you like, and which courses matter most.
  2. Get a routed quote. We suggest a base (east, city or split), match tee times to sensible pickup times, and price hotel, rounds and private transfers together.
  3. Adjust. Swap a course, add a hot springs afternoon or a spa day, or change hotels until the plan fits.
  4. Confirm. A deposit secures tee times and rooms. We send final pickup times and caddie details before you fly.

In high season, enquire early if Highlands or Alpine weekend tee times are a priority, since the best morning slots go first.

Frequently asked questions

Which golf courses are close to San Kamphaeng?

Two premium courses sit on the east side. Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort is in the Mae On foothills. Alpine Golf Resort is on the east side too, about 35 minutes from the city according to Olsen Tours (accessed 2026-10-25). Highlands is a 27-hole Lee Schmidt design that opened in 2005. Alpine is a Ron Garl design that has hosted Asian Tour events. The Gassan courses in Lamphun are the next nearest. Royal Chiang Mai, Mae Jo, North Hill and Summit Green Valley are on the north and west side, so from an east base they take the longest to reach.

Is it worth staying in San Kamphaeng or Mae On for a golf trip?

It pays off when Highlands and Alpine make up at least half your rounds and you want quiet evenings, a spa and the hot springs. It does not pay off on a trip built around northern courses like Royal Chiang Mai, Mae Jo or North Hill, because you would drive across the whole valley each morning. Restaurants and nightlife are thin out east as well. Most of our groups do a split stay: two or three nights east for the Highlands and Alpine rounds, then the city for the rest. Send us your course list via the golf page and we will tell you which base fits.

How much does it cost to visit San Kamphaeng Hot Springs?

Thai Holiday Guide lists foreign adults at 100 THB and children at 50 THB, with Thai nationals paying 40 THB (accessed 2026-10-25). Parking is extra. The mineral pool costs about 50 THB more, and private soaking rooms run roughly 200 to 300 THB per group. Opening hours are listed as 07:00 to 18:00 daily. Prices change, so treat these as a guide and confirm at the gate. The springs are in Mae On district, about 36 km east of Chiang Mai, a short drive from Highlands for a soak after your round.

How long is the drive from Chiang Mai city to Chiangmai Highlands?

Olsen Tours puts Highlands at about 50 minutes from Chiang Mai, and hotel listings place it roughly 25 to 29 km from the centre (accessed 2026-10-25). Times depend on traffic leaving the city and where your hotel is. Alpine is listed at about 35 minutes. If you stay out in Mae On or at the Highlands resort itself, most of that drive goes away and you can take an early tee time without a pre-dawn pickup. That is the main practical reason to base east. We confirm exact transfer times when we quote, since we time pickups to your tee times.

Can I get a Grab or taxi to the eastern golf courses?

Getting a Grab out from the city is usually easy. Getting one back from a Mae On clubhouse in the afternoon is harder, because there are few drivers out there and a golf bag takes up a lot of room. A pre-booked private round trip to a course costs about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 depending on distance and vehicle (CMGT Golf, 2026). If you are based east and playing several rounds, a private driver for the whole trip is the reliable option. Our packages include private transfers, so pickup times are set around your tee times.
