Chiang Mai vs Okinawa Golf: Which Asian Winter Trip Wins?

Chiang Mai vs Okinawa golf compared on green fees, caddies, winter weather, flights and course quality, with the honest trade-offs from a Chiang Mai operator.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team13 Oct 20269 min read

Chiang Mai wins on price, caddie service and winter sunshine, and Okinawa wins on clean spring air and polish. Chiang Mai all-in rounds cost ฿1,950-3,700 in green season (CMGT Golf, 2026). Okinawa resort green fees start around ¥17,000 before extras. Choose Okinawa if you must travel in March, during Chiang Mai's smoky burning season.

Which destination is better for a winter golf trip overall?

Chiang Mai is better for most winter golfers: warmer afternoons, lower per-round costs and mandatory caddie service. Okinawa is better for March travel and short hops from North Asia.

The two destinations sell very different trips. Chiang Mai is a valley ringed by mountains, with 13 courses in our core directory, all within about an hour of the city. A round there includes a caddie, a shared cart and usually a long Thai lunch afterwards. Okinawa is a subtropical island chain with seaside courses, Japanese service standards and self-play golf.

We run golf trips on the ground in Chiang Mai, so read this with that bias in mind. We have tried to be fair. Okinawa genuinely beats us in one part of the year, and we say which below.

How do green fees compare between Chiang Mai and Okinawa?

Chiang Mai's green-season all-in rate, including caddie and cart, is often lower than an Okinawa green fee alone. The gap widens across five rounds.

Here are the Chiang Mai rates we book in the April to October 2026 green season (CMGT Golf, 2026):

On the Okinawa side, the Japan National Tourism Organization lists PGM Golf Resort Okinawa from roughly ¥17,000 on weekdays, with higher holiday rates (accessed 2026-10-13). Kanucha Golf Course is listed higher again, in the mid ¥20,000s on weekdays. Both listings note that fees vary by plan and season, so treat these as a guide, not a quote.

Chiang Mai prices rise from November into the high season. Published high-season rack rates are patchy, so we quote them live rather than print a number. Even so, the cheapest Chiang Mai premium courses stay well under Okinawa's resort fees.

Which has better golf weather in December to February?

Chiang Mai, if you want sun. January averages about 29C highs and 15C lows, dry and clear. Naha averages about 20C with cloud and wind.

WeatherSpark's Chiang Mai data puts January among the coolest months, with highs near 29C and lows near 15C (accessed 2026-10-13). Rain is rare from December to February. Highland courses start cool at dawn and warm up fast by the back nine, so pack a light layer for the first few holes and leave it in the cart by 9am.

WeatherSpark's Naha data shows January highs of about 20C and lows of about 15C, with wind all year (accessed 2026-10-13). That is pleasant golf weather, but it is a sweater morning, not a shorts morning. On exposed coastal holes, the wind becomes a real factor in club choice, often one or two clubs into the breeze.

Our full month-by-month breakdown is in the best time for golf in Chiang Mai.

When is Okinawa the better choice?

In March, and often from late February to mid-April. Chiang Mai's burning season haze can push the air quality index into unhealthy levels, while Okinawa's winter air stays clean.

This is our honest downside, and we put it up front with every client. From roughly late January to mid-April, agricultural and forest burning fills the Chiang Mai valley with smoke. It peaks in March, and at its worst Chiang Mai ranks among the most polluted cities in the world on daily air quality tables. Views of Doi Suthep disappear, and a five-hour round in thick haze is not what anyone flies in for.

From November to mid-February the air is clean and the views to Doi Suthep are sharp. That is the window we recommend, and it fills first, so enquire early for December and January tee times.

How do the courses themselves compare?

Chiang Mai offers more mountain-and-valley variety and serious length. Okinawa offers ocean views and consistent Japanese conditioning. Few Chiang Mai courses sit near water.

Chiang Mai's strongest courses are design-led. Alpine is a Ron Garl layout that has hosted professional tour events, with long par 5s and a tough finishing stretch. Highlands is a Schmidt-Curley design on paspalum turf, heavily bunkered, and in our experience the most consistently conditioned course in the region. Royal Chiang Mai is a Peter Thomson course with pot bunkers and links-style run-offs. Gassan Panorama is one of the longest layouts in the valley from the back tees, with wide fairways that reward a big driver.

The honest catch is consistency. Royal Chiang Mai's condition varies with the season, Mae Jo sits a step below the premium group on conditioning, and greens at Summit Green Valley can be uneven depending on the month. Japanese maintenance standards in Okinawa are generally more uniform from course to course.

When we build a Chiang Mai itinerary, we steer each round to the course that is in the best shape that month. Tell us your handicap and the style you enjoy, and we will match the layouts to it.

How does the caddie experience differ?

In Chiang Mai, every golfer gets a mandatory caddie who reads greens and keeps score. Okinawa golf is mostly self-play from a riding cart.

In Chiang Mai, the caddie fee runs ฿300-400 at most courses, paid to the club. On top of that, budget a cash tip of ฿400-600 per 18 holes, handed over at the bag drop. Raise it to ฿700-1,000 for an excellent caddie. Your caddie drives or walks with the cart, lines up putts, cleans your clubs and finds balls you would have lost.

Japanese resort golf works differently. You load your own bag, drive the cart and read your own putts. Some golfers prefer that privacy and pace. Most of our clients come away saying the caddie was the best part of the trip. Our Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette.

How long does it take to get there?

Both usually need a connection from Europe, North America or Australia. Chiang Mai connects via Bangkok, and Okinawa via mainland Japan or another North Asian hub.

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) sits about 4 km from the Old City. A taxi costs ฿150-200 and takes 10-15 minutes. Courses ring the valley, generally 30 to 45 minutes out. North Hill is about 15 minutes from the airport, and Lanna Golf Club about 10 minutes from the Old City, which makes both easy arrival-day or departure-day rounds.

Okinawa is the easier hop if you already live in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong. From further away, total travel time to either destination is broadly similar, so check your own routing before deciding. Our airport transfer guide covers arrival day in Chiang Mai.

What does the whole trip cost beyond green fees?

Chiang Mai costs less per day on hotels, food, transport and caddie tips combined. Okinawa costs more, though you save the tip and caddie fee.

The per-round figure is only part of the cost. Daily costs in Chiang Mai stay low: a good Thai dinner, a massage after the round and a private driver for the day all cost less than in Okinawa. A pre-booked private round trip to a course runs about ฿1,400-2,500 per vehicle, shared across your group.

In Okinawa you save the caddie fee and tip, which adds up to about ฿700-1,000 per round in Chiang Mai. Hotels and rental cars in Okinawa usually swallow that saving and more. For a fuller budget, see our Chiang Mai golf holiday cost breakdown.

Is a package worth it, or should you book each course direct?

For three or more rounds, a package usually pays off through bundled transfers and secured tee times. For a single round, booking direct can be cheaper.

A CMGT Golf package covers green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver for every tee time, airport transfers and on-the-ground support. We are enquiry-driven: you tell us your dates and group, we send a quote, and a deposit confirms it. Booking steps are simple: enquire, agree the course plan, pay the deposit, then we lock tee times and send your driver schedule before you fly.

Popular formats include the Weekend Warrior, 3 nights and 3 rounds, the Highlands Classic, 5 nights and 4 rounds, and the Lanna Signature, 7 nights and 5 rounds. If you are only playing once, our guide to booking direct vs through an agent shows when to skip us.

So which trip should you book?

Book Chiang Mai for November to mid-February sunshine, caddies and value. Book Okinawa for March, short North Asia flights, or self-play seaside golf.

For a 4 to 7 night winter golf trip, Chiang Mai gives you more courses within an hour, lower all-in costs and warmer afternoons. Okinawa is the right call when Chiang Mai's air is at its worst, or when a short flight from Seoul or Taipei matters more than price. Tell us your dates on our Chiang Mai golf packages page and we will tell you honestly whether those dates suit the valley.

Frequently asked questions

Is golf cheaper in Chiang Mai or Okinawa?

Chiang Mai is cheaper per round. Green-season all-in rates (green fee, caddie and cart) run from ฿1,950 at Gassan Panorama to ฿3,700 at Alpine Golf Resort (CMGT Golf, 2026). Okinawa's published visitor green fees start around ¥17,000 on weekdays at resort courses such as PGM Golf Resort Okinawa, per Japan National Tourism Organization listings, before tax and extras. High-season Chiang Mai fees rise from November, so confirm live rates at booking. Across a five-round trip the gap adds up to a real saving, and hotels and food in Chiang Mai also cost less.

Is Okinawa or Chiang Mai warmer for golf in January?

Chiang Mai is warmer by day and cooler at dawn. January highs average about 29C with lows near 15C, per WeatherSpark climate data. Naha in Okinawa averages a high of about 20C and a low of about 15C in January, also per WeatherSpark, with frequent cloud and steady wind. Chiang Mai mornings can be crisp on highland courses, then turn into dry, sunny afternoons. Okinawa feels like a mild spring day with wind off the sea. If you want shorts-and-sunshine golf in midwinter, Chiang Mai is the stronger pick.

Do Okinawa golf courses use caddies like Thailand?

Mostly no. Japanese resort golf, including Okinawa, is largely self-play with a riding cart, and caddies are optional or unavailable at many clubs. In Chiang Mai a caddie is mandatory, one per golfer. The caddie fee to the course runs ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai clubs, plus a cash tip of ฿400-600 per 18 holes handed over at the bag drop. Many visiting golfers rate the caddie as a highlight, because the caddie reads greens, rakes bunkers and keeps score. If you prefer to play alone at your own pace with a yardage book, Okinawa suits you better.

When should I avoid golf in Chiang Mai?

Avoid March, and treat late February to mid-April with caution. That is burning season, when smoke from agricultural and forest fires pushes the air quality index into unhealthy levels on many days, and Chiang Mai regularly ranks among the most polluted cities in the world at the peak. November to mid-February is the clean, cool, dry window and our first recommendation. If your only free dates fall in March, Okinawa is the safer choice, because its winter air is clean. Check IQAir or aqicn daily if you do travel during the haze months.

Can I book a Chiang Mai golf package with transfers included?

Yes. CMGT Golf builds packages that cover green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver for every tee time and airport transfers, with on-the-ground support while you play. We work on an enquiry basis: tell us your dates, group size and preferred courses, and we send a quote, then confirm with a deposit. Our formats run from a 3-night, 3-round weekend to a 7-night, 5-round trip. For a single round, booking the course direct can be cheaper, and we will tell you so.
