Private Driver for Chiang Mai Golf Week: What to Know

Private driver for a Chiang Mai golf week: what a daily van costs, how many golf bags fit, and when per-round transfers or Grab are the cheaper choice.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team18 Oct 20268 min read

For a Chiang Mai golf week of four or more rounds, a dedicated private driver with a high-roof van is the right setup: roughly ฿2,590 a day plus fuel on the open market, one pickup time per day, and no fight over bag space. For one or two rounds, booking per-trip transfers costs less. Here is how to choose, what each option really costs, and what a good daily setup looks like from the moment you land at CNX to the last putt of the week.

Do I really need a private driver for a Chiang Mai golf trip?

For four or more rounds, yes. Courses ring the valley 15-60 minutes out, tee times start early, and taxis struggle with full tour bags.

Chiang Mai's courses are spread around the valley rather than clustered. Alpine Golf Resort and Chiang Mai Highlands sit out in the countryside, the Gassan Khuntan transfer runs 45 minutes or more into the Lamphun hills, and only Lanna Golf Club (about 10-15 minutes from the Old City) and North Hill (a short hop from the airport side of town) are true quick runs.

A 7:30am tee time at an outer course means a pickup before 6:30am. At that hour, a ride app is a gamble: fewer cars are online, and the ones that are often turn down a booking once they see the bags. A driver who knows the route, loads the clubs properly and waits through the round takes that risk away.

How much does a private driver cost in Chiang Mai?

Expect around ฿2,590 per day for a van and driver for 10 hours, plus fuel. A one-off private round trip to a course is typically ฿1,400-2,500.

Open-market rates are easy to check. One Chiang Mai listing prices a van with an English-Thai speaking driver at ฿2,590 per day for 10 hours, with ฿200 per extra hour, and fuel paid separately at about ฿4-5 per km (Click2GoThailand, accessed 2026-10-18). The same listing adds a surcharge for steep-hill routes, which is worth knowing for the mountain courses.

A round trip to an outer course is often 70-100 km, so fuel adds roughly ฿300-500 a day on top of the day rate. Before day one, agree in writing on fuel, waiting time, hill surcharges, overtime after 10 hours and whether the driver's meals are included. Rates move with season and vehicle, so treat every figure here as a guide, not a quote.

Is a dedicated driver cheaper than booking transfers per round?

For a 2-ball playing two rounds, no. For a 4-ball playing four or five rounds with dinners out, the costs land close together.

Here is the honest maths, per day, for the group rather than per person.

Split four ways, a full driver day works out to well under ฿1,000 per golfer including fuel, and it covers the evening run to dinner as well as the course. That is where the dedicated option pulls ahead for a busy 4-ball.

What vehicle fits four golfers and their bags?

A high-roof van for a 4-ball. A saloon holds two tour bags, an SUV three at a squeeze. Airport days with suitcases always need the van.

Bag count, not head count, decides the vehicle:

  • Saloon car: 2 golfers, 2 bags, small suitcases.
  • SUV or MPV: 3 golfers, 3 bags with seats folded, light luggage.
  • High-roof van: 4-6 golfers, all bags flat, full luggage. Larger groups need a second vehicle or a bigger van.

Golfasian's published Chiang Mai week package specifies a VIP high-roof van for its course and airport transfers (Golfasian, accessed 2026-10-18). That is the market standard for a reason: travel bags with drivers and fairway woods do not bend, and a van keeps them flat and away from passengers.

What does a good daily transfer setup look like?

One fixed pickup time, set 60-75 minutes before the tee, a driver who waits on site, and the return leg agreed before you start.

A typical day for a 7:30am tee at an outer course:

  • 6:15 Pickup at the hotel lobby, bags loaded the night before if the hotel allows.
  • 7:00 Arrive, check in, range balls.
  • 7:30 Tee off. The driver waits or rests nearby.
  • 12:30 Finish, lunch at the clubhouse.
  • 14:00 Back at the hotel, or straight to a massage.

Share your tee sheet with the driver on day one and swap phone numbers or LINE contacts so a late finish is one message, not a search of the car park. Early tee times also beat the heat. Our best tee times guide covers the windows by season.

Where should I stay to cut drive times?

Base yourself on the side of the city you will play most. The Old City and Nimman put dinners close, at the cost of longer morning drives.

No single base is close to every course. Several of the courses on most golf weeks, including the Gassan group and Alpine, sit south and east towards Lamphun, so a base on that side of the city trims the morning run. If you want walkable evenings, restaurants and markets, stay central and accept a longer drive each day. A private driver makes either work, because the drive is not your problem. Our neighbourhood guide for a golf base weighs each area.

How should I pair courses to save driving time?

Pair nearby courses on back-to-back days, and keep the longest transfer for the day after a rest, not the day you land.

The Gassan courses in Lamphun are a natural group. Gassan Legacy, Gassan Panorama and Gassan Khuntan all sit south of the city, with Khuntan the longest drive into the hills. Play them on consecutive days so the driver settles into the route. Save North Hill or Lanna for arrival or departure day, when you have little time and want the shortest possible run. Our course pairings itinerary lays out full weeks.

How does the airport transfer fit into a golf week?

CNX airport is only a few kilometres from the Old City, usually 10-15 minutes by car. The airport run is where an undersized car fails first.

The distance is short, but the load is at its heaviest: suitcases plus golf travel bags. Book the van for both airport legs even if you use other transport in between. If you land early, some groups go straight to a nearby course with the bags already in the van, which turns a dead travel day into a round. For arrival times, meet-and-greet and late flights, see our Chiang Mai airport transfer guide.

Does burning season change the transport plan?

Yes. From roughly February to April, smoke can close in. A driver on call makes it easier to swap a hill course for a closer one.

Air quality is often at its worst in March. Check IQAir's Chiang Mai reading (accessed 2026-10-18) each morning. On a bad day, a flexible driver can switch you to a shorter trip or an indoor afternoon, usually without extra cost if it stays inside the agreed hours. Our burning season golf guide covers when to avoid booking.

Should I book the driver myself or through a golf operator?

Book direct for one or two transfers. Use an operator when the driver, tee times and hotel all need to line up with each other.

The hard part of a golf week is the timing, not the van. Tee times move, a round runs long, a course swaps your slot. When one team holds the tee sheet and the driver's schedule, changes happen in one message. Our direct vs agent booking guide compares both routes.

Every CMGT Golf package includes private airport transfers and a private driver for each course day, with green fees, caddies, carts and hotel. The Highlands Classic runs 5 nights and 4 rounds, and the Lanna Signature runs 7 nights and 5 rounds. Browse the full course directory to plan your week, then send us your dates for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private driver cost in Chiang Mai for golf?

One Chiang Mai listing prices a van with an English-Thai speaking driver at ฿2,590 per day for 10 hours, with extra hours at ฿200 and fuel charged on top at roughly ฿4-5 per km (Click2GoThailand, accessed 2026-10-18). A pre-booked private round trip to a single course typically runs about ฿1,400-2,500. For one round, a per-trip transfer is cheaper. For a week with 4 or 5 rounds, an airport run and evenings out, a dedicated driver usually lands close in cost and is much simpler. Confirm the rate and fuel terms in writing before you travel.

Can I use Grab to get to Chiang Mai golf courses?

You can, but we do not recommend it as your main plan. Grab works well around the city and from the airport, where a ride usually costs around ฿150-200. It gets risky for golf because tee times start early, many courses sit 30-60 minutes out, and a standard car may refuse or struggle with two full tour bags. Getting a ride back from a remote course after the round is the bigger problem. If you do use Grab, book a large car class, and ask the clubhouse to call a local taxi for the return.

What vehicle do I need for four golfers and their clubs?

Four golfers with tour bags and suitcases need a high-roof van, such as a Toyota Commuter. A saloon car holds two golf bags comfortably, and an SUV holds three at a squeeze with the rear seats folded. Do not try to fit a 4-ball into an SUV for an airport run with luggage. That is the most common transport mistake we see. For course days without suitcases, a van still makes sense because the bags travel flat and nobody rides with a driver head on their lap.

How much should I tip a private driver in Chiang Mai?

Tipping a driver is appreciated rather than mandatory. Our guidance for guests is ฿200-500 per day for a driver who has handled early pickups, waited through the round and helped with bags, paid in cash at the end of the day or the trip. It is separate from your caddie tip, which is expected and commonly runs ฿400-600 per 18 holes. If your driver also arranged dinner bookings or a temple stop on a rest day, tip at the top of that range.

Does a CMGT Golf package include a private driver?

Yes. Every CMGT Golf package includes private airport transfers and a private driver to and from each course, along with green fees, caddies, carts, hotel and on-the-ground support. We size the vehicle to your group and bag count, and set pickup times from your tee times.
