Jeju vs Chiang Mai Golf: Which Short Trip Wins in 2026?

Jeju vs Chiang Mai golf compared on green fees, caddies, weather windows and flights, with the months each wins and when Jeju is the better call.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team27 Oct 202610 min read

Chiang Mai wins on price, winter weather and caddie service. A green-season round here costs roughly US$100 all-in, against about US$160 to 170 for a weekday round at a Jeju resort course. Jeju wins in spring, from mid-April to May, while Chiang Mai is in burning season. Choose based on the month you're travelling, then on your budget.

Which is better for golf, Jeju or Chiang Mai?

For a trip between November and February, Chiang Mai is the better choice. For April and May, Jeju is better. Outside those months either works, with trade-offs in rain, wind and cost.

We run golf trips in Chiang Mai, so read this with that bias in mind. We'll still tell you when Jeju is the better choice. The two destinations attract the same golfers: Korean, Japanese, Singaporean and Hong Kong players looking for a short break, plus long-haul visitors adding golf to an Asia trip. Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Jeju's courses logged about 2.4 million rounds in 2023, down around 14% on the year before. It put the fall down to cost, with Korean golfers heading to Southeast Asia instead (Korea JoongAng Daily, accessed 2026-10-27).

That trend tells you most of the story. Jeju is the convenient option for anyone already in Korea. Chiang Mai is the better-value option once you are willing to take an international flight.

How much does a round cost in Jeju compared with Chiang Mai?

In 2026, a Chiang Mai round costs ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 all-in during green season. A weekday round at a Jeju resort course costs roughly 230,000 to 295,000 won per golfer once you add caddie and cart.

Jeju lists its fees in separate pieces. At the time of writing, Ananti Jeju charges 170,000 won on weekdays on its Kimnyeong course and 231,000 won on Halla, rising to 210,000 and 271,000 won at weekends. On top of that come a 100,000 won cart fee and a 150,000 won caddie fee per team (Ananti Jeju golf guide, accessed 2026-10-27). Split between four golfers, a weekday Kimnyeong round comes to about 232,500 won each. Across the island the picture is similar, with weekday green fees commonly between 100,000 and 230,000 won and weekends between 180,000 and 300,000 won, before caddie and cart.

In Chiang Mai the course quotes one all-in figure. From April to October 2026, Chiangmai Highlands cost ฿3,400 (฿2,250 green fee, ฿400 caddie, ฿750 cart), Alpine Golf Resort cost ฿3,700, and Gassan Legacy cost ฿1,950. Add the caddie tip on top and you still sit well below a Jeju weekday. Our cart and caddie fees guide breaks down each line item.

Hotels follow the same pattern. A good four-star in Chiang Mai's Nimman or Old City areas usually costs far less per night than a Jeju resort room, so the gap widens over a four-night trip rather than narrowing.

When is the weather better in each destination?

Chiang Mai is cool and dry from November to February, which is exactly when Jeju is cold and windy. Jeju's spring, from mid-April to May, falls during Chiang Mai's hottest and haziest months.

Jeju City averages a January high of around 9C, with lows only a few degrees above freezing. By May, highs reach the low 20s. Rain is heaviest from June to September, with August usually the wettest month, and typhoons can hit from July to early October (Climates to Travel, accessed 2026-10-27). Wind is Jeju's other problem. Exposed coastal holes catch the northwest winter monsoon, so expect to club up two or three times into the breeze.

In Chiang Mai, early tee times from November to February start in the mid-teens to low 20s C and reach highs of 28 to 32C, with low humidity. From June to October you get short afternoon storms, but mornings are usually playable, and that is when green fees are lowest. Our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide goes through it month by month.

How bad is Chiang Mai's burning season for golf?

Bad enough that we tell clients not to come from about mid-January to mid-April. March is usually the worst month, and early April 2026 put Chiang Mai near the top of the world pollution rankings.

This is where Chiang Mai does worst in the comparison, and we won't play it down. On 2 April 2026, Chiang Mai was reported as the world's second most polluted city, with an AQI above 200 (Nation Thailand, accessed 2026-10-27). IQAir still listed the city among the ten worst on 16 April, with AQI above 150, caused by seasonal biomass burning (IQAir, accessed 2026-10-27).

On a bad day the mountains around the valley disappear, the light goes flat and orange, and four or five hours of walking and swinging outdoors is not something we would recommend to anyone with asthma or a heart condition. Late January and February are a grey zone. Some weeks are clear, some are not, and nobody can forecast it months ahead.

If your only free dates are in March, Jeju's spring is the healthier choice. Our burning season golf guide covers the late-February grey zone and how we decide day by day.

How do caddies and on-course service compare?

In Chiang Mai each golfer gets a personal caddie for a ฿300 to ฿400 fee plus a ฿400 to ฿600 tip. In Jeju one caddie serves all four golfers for a single team fee.

That difference changes how a round feels. A Thai caddie looks after one bag only. They read your putts, clean your clubs and ball, rake bunkers, fix pitch marks, keep your score and hand you the next club before you ask. Many of the regular caddies at the bigger courses have worked the same layout for years and know every break on the greens.

A Korean caddie runs the whole group's pace, club selection and cart, which is efficient but less personal. Jeju's team fees also hurt pairs, because two golfers often pay the same 150,000 won caddie fee and 100,000 won cart fee as a four-ball. In Chiang Mai everything is charged per player, so a pair or a solo golfer pays the same rate as a group. You tip in cash at the end of the round, and our caddie culture and tipping guide explains how.

Which destination has the better courses?

Jeju has more dramatic volcanic and coastal scenery. Chiang Mai has more variety within an hour's drive and several well-known architect designs at lower green fees.

Jeju's courses wrap around the slopes of Hallasan, and many have sea views, lava-rock features and wind as a constant factor. Its best courses are excellent, though some top private clubs limit access for visitors without a member introduction.

In Chiang Mai you can play the Schmidt-Curley design at Highlands, with its mountain backdrop and smooth greens, Ron Garl's long, demanding layout at Alpine, and Peter Thomson's design at Royal Chiang Mai, all within one trip and all within about 45 minutes of the city. Gassan Legacy adds a flatter, water-heavy course that suits higher handicappers.

Chiang Mai's conditioning does vary, though, and that is a fair downside. Greens and fairways at some courses, including Summit Green Valley and Mae Jo, can be patchy at certain times of year, especially around aeration or after heavy rain. We check recent reports before we book you in and swap courses if a layout is below standard that week. The full list is in our golf course directory.

Which is easier to reach?

Jeju is about an hour's domestic flight from Seoul or Busan. Chiang Mai has direct flights from Korea and a short connection from Bangkok, and its airport is about 4 km from the Old City.

From Seoul, Jeju is the easiest golf escape there is, with no immigration on the domestic leg. Direct international flights into Jeju are limited, so most long-haul golfers connect through a mainland Korean airport. Chiang Mai is served by direct flights from Korea, such as the Busan to Chiang Mai direct service, and long-haul visitors connect through Bangkok on a flight of a little over an hour.

When you land at CNX, the city is usually 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi, typically ฿150 to 200. Most courses are 30 to 45 minutes from the city, with North Hill and Lanna the closest. Golf bags travel easily on both routes, but check your airline's sports equipment allowance before you book, as low-cost carriers often charge extra.

Does a package beat booking each round yourself?

For three or more rounds with a group, usually yes. For one round on a quiet weekday, booking direct can work out cheaper, and we'll tell you when that's the case.

Our Chiang Mai packages include green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support, all on one quote. We work by enquiry, not instant booking. You send us your dates, group size and handicap range, we reply with a quote and suggested course rotation, we adjust it until it suits you, and a deposit confirms the tee times. If the weather or a course's condition changes, we rearrange the plan locally rather than leaving you to sort it out.

The Weekend Warrior 3-night package and Northern Value 4-night package are the closest match to a Jeju-length break. Our direct vs agent booking guide covers the cases where a package doesn't pay off. Frequently asked questions

Is golf cheaper in Chiang Mai or Jeju?

Chiang Mai is cheaper per round. Our 2026 green-season all-in rate at Chiangmai Highlands was ฿3,400, which covered green fee, caddie and cart and comes to roughly US$100. A weekday round on Ananti Jeju's Kimnyeong course works out to about 232,500 won per golfer once you split the team caddie and cart fees four ways. That is roughly US$160 to 170. Jeju weekend green fees generally run 180,000 to 300,000 won before caddie and cart. Chiang Mai high-season rates from November are higher than the green-season figures, so confirm the live price in your quote.

What is the best month to golf in Jeju versus Chiang Mai?

Chiang Mai is best from November to February, when it is cool, dry and clear, with highs around 28 to 32C. Jeju is best from mid-April to late May and from mid-October to mid-November, when Jeju City highs sit roughly between 16 and 22C. The simple rule: go to Chiang Mai in the northern winter, when Jeju is cold and windy. Consider Jeju in spring, when Chiang Mai is in burning season and its air quality can be very poor.

How do caddies differ between Jeju and Chiang Mai?

In Chiang Mai every golfer gets their own caddie, and it is mandatory. The caddie fee to the course is usually ฿300 to 400, plus a cash tip of ฿400 to 600 per 18 holes. In Jeju one caddie normally looks after a whole group of four for a single team fee, around 150,000 won at a resort like Ananti, and the cart is a shared team fee too. A pair in Jeju often pays the same team fees as a four-ball unless the course offers a smaller-group rate.

Can I combine Jeju and Chiang Mai in one golf trip?

You can, but most golfers shouldn't. Their best weather windows barely overlap. Early November is the only stretch that suits both, and even then Jeju is cooling fast, with daytime highs in the mid-teens. Getting between the two usually means connecting through Seoul or Busan, which costs you most of a day. For one trip, pick the destination that suits your month. If you want both, a Jeju spring break and a Chiang Mai winter break work better as two separate trips.

Is Chiang Mai golf worth it during burning season?

For most golfers, no. Burning season runs from about mid-January to mid-April and usually peaks in March. On 2 April 2026, Chiang Mai was reported as the world's second most polluted city. If March or early April are your only dates, Jeju's spring is a cleaner option, or you can head south to Hua Hin or Phuket. If you do play Chiang Mai in late February, check IQAir each morning, book early tee times and pack N95 masks.
