Chiang Mai vs Costa del Sol Golf: Is Long-Haul Worth It?

Chiang Mai vs Costa del Sol golf compared on green fees, winter weather, flights and caddies, with the honest case for when Spain still wins for UK golfers.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team14 Oct 20269 min read

For a UK golfer with seven or more days and four or more rounds, Chiang Mai beats the Costa del Sol on winter warmth, per-round cost and service. For a three-night break, Spain wins on flight time alone. Green-season all-in rounds in Chiang Mai run ฿1,950-3,700 including caddie and cart (CMGT Golf, 2026). A standard Costa del Sol round costs €70-150 before the buggy.

Is Chiang Mai golf actually cheaper than the Costa del Sol?

Per round, Chiang Mai is much cheaper, and the price includes a caddie and cart. The long-haul airfare is what narrows the gap.

On the Costa del Sol, the Málaga Travel Guide (accessed 2026-10-14) puts a standard 18-hole resort round at €70-150 in peak season. A shared buggy adds €30-50. The marquee tracks cost far more: the same guide lists Finca Cortesín at about €300 and Valderrama at upwards of €400.

In Chiang Mai, the best-conditioned course in the region, Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa, costs ฿3,400 all-in during the April-October 2026 green season. That breaks down as ฿2,250 green fee, ฿400 caddie and ฿750 cart. Alpine Golf Resort, a former Asian Tour venue, costs ฿3,700 all-in. Gassan Legacy and Gassan Panorama cost ฿1,950 all-in.

The honest trade-off: those Chiang Mai figures are green-season rates. High-season rack rates from November to March run higher, and most courses don't publish them clearly. Expect to pay more in peak months and confirm at booking. Our Chiang Mai golf holiday cost breakdown covers the full trip budget, including hotels, transfers and tips.

When does the long-haul flight stop making sense?

Below about seven nights, the long-haul flight eats the savings. From a week upward, cheaper rounds and included caddies start to win.

Málaga is under three hours from London on a direct flight, with departures from most UK regional airports. Chiang Mai has no direct UK flight. You connect through Bangkok, Doha or Dubai, so the journey takes roughly 15-18 hours door to door, and Thailand runs 6-7 hours ahead of the UK depending on British Summer Time.

The maths is simple. Each round in Chiang Mai saves you money compared with a Spanish peak-season round plus buggy. Multiply that saving by your round count, then compare it with the extra airfare. Two rounds on a long weekend never covers the gap. Five rounds over seven nights often comes close, and the warmer weather makes up the difference for most of our guests. Groups of four do better still, because a shared private driver and villa split the fixed costs.

Which destination has better winter golf weather?

Chiang Mai is warm and dry from November to February. The Costa del Sol is mild but cool, with January highs around 16-18C.

Chiang Mai's peak golf season runs November to February. Highland courses are cool at an early tee time and reach roughly 28-32C by midday. Humidity is low and the skies are usually clear, with mountain views. December and January are the coolest months, which is why early tee times book up first.

The Costa del Sol in January is mild by UK standards, and the Málaga Travel Guide notes daytime highs that regularly reach 18C. It also notes that Bermuda grass fairways go dormant and turn brown in winter, which surprises golfers expecting lush turf. Spain's peak golf months are spring and autumn, when the weather is warmer and the courses greener, and green fees peak with them.

What is the biggest downside of Chiang Mai that Spain does not have?

Burning-season smoke. From roughly mid-January to mid-April, and worst in March, Chiang Mai's air quality can be poor enough to rule out golf.

Agricultural burning across northern Thailand pushes the AQI well into unhealthy territory most years, and on the worst days Chiang Mai ranks among the most polluted cities in the world. Spring 2026 was no exception. Four or five hours of walking and swinging in that air is not a holiday. The Costa del Sol has nothing comparable.

Our advice: book November to early February, avoid March entirely, and check IQAir's Chiang Mai readings (accessed 2026-10-14) before you travel. If your only free weeks fall in March, play Spain, or choose Thailand's south coast instead. More detail is in our burning season golf guide.

How do the courses compare for quality and variety?

The Costa del Sol has many more courses and more famous names. Chiang Mai offers fewer, quieter, mountain-backed courses with tour pedigree at a lower price.

The Costa del Sol has around 70 courses along its coast, and Golf in Spain (accessed 2026-10-14) notes that Marbella alone has 15. Valderrama is the region's headline course, but visitor tee times are limited and sell out early, so check availability before you build a trip around it.

Chiang Mai's courses sit in a valley ringed by mountains, mostly 30-45 minutes from town. Highlands is a Lee Schmidt design with heavy bunkering and the region's best conditioning. Alpine is a Ron Garl layout known for a very long par-5 4th and an island-green par 3. Royal Chiang Mai is a Peter Thomson course with British links-style pot bunkers. Tee sheets are quieter than in Marbella, so a four-hour round is normal.

Not every course is great. Summit Green Valley sits at the pricier end of the region but draws repeated complaints about its greens, and Mae Jo has the weakest conditioning of the premium set. We steer guests accordingly. Our ranking of the best golf courses in Chiang Mai explains why.

What does a caddie add that a Spanish buggy does not?

A Thai caddie reads greens, cleans clubs, keeps score and usually drives the cart. It's mandatory, and most UK golfers rate it the biggest upgrade.

Every Thai course assigns one caddie per golfer, and you cannot opt out. The caddie fee to the course is ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses. Tip your caddie directly in cash after the round: ฿400-600 for 18 holes, up to ฿700-1,000 for excellent service. Bring small notes, because caddies are paid by you, not by the course. On the Costa del Sol you pay for a buggy and handle everything yourself.

Etiquette is simple but worth reading up on first. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers it.

How easy is getting from hotel to tee in each destination?

Spain is self-drive: hire a car and go. In Chiang Mai, a private driver is the norm, because Grab is unreliable for early tee times with golf bags.

On the Costa del Sol, most golfers hire a car at Málaga airport and drive along the A-7. Chiang Mai airport is only about 4 km from the Old City, a 10-15 minute taxi ride for roughly ฿150-200. The courses are further out. A pre-booked private round trip to one course costs about ฿1,400-2,500, and Grab often struggles with 6am pickups, remote clubhouses and full-size golf bags.

That transport cost is where a Chiang Mai package earns its keep. Our golf packages bundle tee times, caddies, carts, hotel, airport pickup and a private driver for each round, with someone on the ground if plans change. For a single round, booking direct and taking a taxi can be cheaper. Our direct versus agent booking guide runs the numbers.

What does a sensible Chiang Mai trip look like for a UK golfer?

Seven nights with four or five rounds, a rest day for jet lag, and travel between November and early February.

The Lanna Signature covers 7 nights and 5 rounds, and suits golfers comparing it with a week in Marbella. The Highlands Classic is 5 nights and 4 rounds for a tighter schedule. If a partner wants temples and markets, the Culture & Golf package mixes 3 rounds with sightseeing.

If you are weighing other Asian options too, our Bali vs Chiang Mai golf comparison uses the same framework.

So which should a UK golfer choose?

Choose Spain for short breaks and spring or autumn trips. Choose Chiang Mai for a warm winter week with caddies and lower per-round costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is golf cheaper in Chiang Mai than on the Costa del Sol?

Per round, yes, by a wide margin. A green-season all-in round at Chiangmai Highlands costs ฿3,400 including green fee, caddie and cart (Apr-Oct 2026 agent rate), and the Gassan courses run ฿1,950 all-in. On the Costa del Sol a standard resort course runs €70-150 in peak season, plus €30-50 for a shared buggy. The catch is the flight. A return long-haul fare to Chiang Mai costs far more than a short-haul hop to Málaga. The green-fee savings usually beat the extra airfare only on trips of a week or more, with four or more rounds.

Which has better winter weather for golf, Chiang Mai or the Costa del Sol?

Chiang Mai is warmer. November to February brings dry, clear days with highs around 28-32C and cool early mornings on the highland courses. The Costa del Sol in January reaches roughly 16-18C by day, with cold nights and some wet, windy spells. If you want shorts-and-polo golf in December, Chiang Mai delivers it. If you dislike heat, or you play best at 18C, Spain's winter suits you better. Avoid Chiang Mai in March, when burning-season smoke peaks.

How long is the flight from the UK to Chiang Mai compared with Málaga?

London to Málaga is a direct short-haul flight of under three hours, with many daily departures from regional UK airports. Chiang Mai has no direct UK service. Most golfers connect through Bangkok, Doha or Dubai, so door to door takes roughly 15-18 hours depending on the connection. Thailand is 6-7 hours ahead of the UK, so plan a light first day. That is why we suggest at least a week of playing time before the long-haul trip pays off. For a long weekend, Spain is the sensible pick.

Do you need a caddie in Chiang Mai like you do a buggy in Spain?

Yes. Caddies are mandatory at Thai courses, one per golfer, and you cannot opt out. The caddie fee to the course is ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses, and you also tip your caddie ฿400-600 in cash after 18 holes. In return they read greens, clean clubs, keep score and usually drive the cart. On the Costa del Sol you push a trolley or pay €30-50 for a shared buggy, and you read your own putts. Most UK golfers say the caddie is the biggest difference between the two trips.

Is a Chiang Mai golf package worth it versus booking courses myself?

For a multi-round trip it usually is, because the cost sits in logistics as much as green fees. Courses ring the valley 30-45 minutes out, and a pre-booked private round trip to one course runs about ฿1,400-2,500. A package folds in tee times, caddies, carts, hotel, airport pickup and a private driver. For one round, booking direct can be cheaper.
