Chiang Mai vs Algarve Golf: Which Winter Trip Wins?

Chiang Mai vs Algarve golf for winter 2026-27: weather, green fees, flights and caddies compared, plus the month when Chiang Mai is the wrong call.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team04 Oct 20269 min read

For a winter golf trip of 7+ nights between mid-November and early February, Chiang Mai wins on warmth, value per round and the caddie experience, while the Algarve wins on flight time and short breaks. January averages about 29C in Chiang Mai against 16C in Faro. For a 3-night weekend, or any trip in March, the Algarve is the better call.

Which is better for winter golf, Chiang Mai or the Algarve?

Chiang Mai for week-long trips with reliable dry heat; the Algarve for short breaks where a three-hour flight matters more than a 13C temperature gap.

Both destinations solve the same problem for UK and European golfers: grass you can play on from November to February. They solve it in very different ways. The Algarve is a short hop with famous resort courses and mild, changeable weather. Chiang Mai is a long-haul trip to a cool, dry mountain valley where the winter months bring very little rain.

The deciding factor for most of our guests is trip length. On a 3-night trip, the long-haul flight and 7-hour time difference cost too much of the holiday. On a 7-night trip, those travel days spread out and the weather, price and service gap starts paying you back every day.

How does January weather compare between Chiang Mai and the Algarve?

Chiang Mai's January averages around 29C highs with almost no rain; Faro averages 16C highs, 9C lows and about ten wet days.

Faro in January averages a 16C high, a 9C low, roughly 49mm of rain over about 10 days and around 10 hours of daylight, per Rough Guides' Faro January guide (accessed 2026-10-04). Pleasant for a British golfer. Also windy on the coastal layouts and cold on an 8:30am tee.

Chiang Mai's January runs from a 15C dawn to an 85F (about 29C) afternoon, per WeatherSpark's Chiang Mai climate data (accessed 2026-10-04). It is one of the coolest months of the year, humidity is low and skies are mostly clear. On our early tee times at the courses in the hills we typically see cool, fresh air on the first few holes and proper heat by the turn.

The honest catch: if you dislike heat, a Chiang Mai afternoon in January is still warmer than most British summer days. Walking 18 holes at midday is hard work, which is why every round we book uses a cart and an early start. Our full best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide breaks this down month by month.

Is golf cheaper in Chiang Mai than in the Algarve?

Per round, yes. A top Chiang Mai course costs roughly ฿3,400-3,700 all-in in green season, while premium Algarve tee times start around €114-220 before a buggy.

The Algarve's marquee courses sit at the top of the European price scale. According to algarve-tourist.com's 2026 course guide (accessed 2026-10-04), Monte Rei starts at €220, Quinta do Lago North and Laranjal from €114, Quinta do Lago South from €132 and Dom Pedro Victoria from €164. Buggies are usually charged on top, so confirm with the course.

In Chiang Mai, our 2026 green-season all-in price covers green fee, mandatory caddie and cart together: ฿3,400 at Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa and ฿3,700 at Alpine Golf Resort (CMGT Golf, 2026). Value courses such as Gassan Legacy run ฿1,950 all-in.

Remember to add the caddie tip of ฿400-600 per round to your Chiang Mai budget, and buggy hire to your Algarve one. For a full cost picture beyond green fees, see our Chiang Mai golf holiday cost breakdown.

Does the longer flight to Chiang Mai pay off?

On 7+ night trips with 4-5 rounds, usually yes. On a 3-night weekend, no. The flight and jet lag cost two full days.

London to Faro is about three hours direct with no winter time difference. You can land at lunchtime and play nine holes the same afternoon. Chiang Mai has no direct UK service. Most guests connect via Bangkok, Doha, Dubai or Singapore, and door-to-door takes roughly 15 to 18 hours depending on the layover. Thailand is 7 hours ahead of the UK in winter.

Where Chiang Mai claws time back is on the ground. The airport sits about 4 km from the Old City, 10-15 minutes by car, and the courses ring the valley, mostly 30-45 minutes out. North Hill is one of the closest courses to the city, which makes it a good choice for a gentle first round. Our airport transfer guide covers the arrival in detail.

Our rule of thumb from planning these trips: under 6 nights, pick the Algarve. 7 nights or more, the extra warmth and lower daily cost make the long-haul flight worthwhile.

How do the courses compare for variety and quality?

The Algarve has more famous names on one coast; Chiang Mai offers mountain golf, links-style golf and floodlit night golf within an hour of one hotel.

The Algarve's strength is depth of big-name resort golf along a single coastal strip, with dozens of courses to choose from. Chiang Mai's strength is contrast. In one week you can play:

  • Chiangmai Highlands: 27 holes of paspalum with heavy bunkering, in our experience among the best-conditioned courses in the region, with an excellent spa.
  • Alpine Golf Resort: a Ron Garl design with 27 holes, long par-5s and a tournament pedigree.
  • Royal Chiang Mai: a Peter Thomson design in British links style with pot bunkers. Conditioning can be variable.
  • Summit Green Valley: floodlit night golf, water on nearly every hole. We do hear recurring complaints about the greens.
  • Gassan Panorama: one of the longest layouts in northern Thailand, a real test from the back tees.

The honest downside: no Chiang Mai course has the global ranking profile of Monte Rei, and conditioning varies more between courses than it does on the top Algarve layouts. We steer guests toward the best-conditioned courses for their dates. See our ranked best golf courses in Chiang Mai for the full picture.

What is different about caddies and service in Chiang Mai?

Every Chiang Mai round includes a mandatory caddie who reads greens, cleans clubs and keeps score; in the Algarve you mostly drive your own buggy.

This is the single biggest experience difference between the two destinations. Thai caddies are one per golfer, cannot be declined, and are paid a course fee of ฿300-400 in Chiang Mai, plus an expected cash tip of ฿400-600 per 18 holes (CMGT Golf, 2026). They read every putt, clean the ball, keep score and know which side to miss on every hole.

Algarve golf is more like home: buggy or trolley, your own yardages, your own reads. Some golfers prefer that. Most Algarve regulars we host find the caddie service surprisingly good for their scores. Read our caddie culture and tipping guide before you go.

When is Chiang Mai the wrong choice over the Algarve?

In March, and often late February to mid-April. Burning-season smoke regularly pushes Chiang Mai's air quality index past 150.

We will not hide this. Northern Thailand's burning season runs roughly from February to April and peaks in March. AQI routinely passes 150, and the worst days go far higher, with Chiang Mai often ranking among the world's most polluted cities during that stretch. Mountain views disappear, and hard exercise in that air is a bad idea. You can track live readings on IQAir's Chiang Mai page.

If your only window is March, play the Algarve, or shift south to Hua Hin or Phuket, which are largely unaffected. Our burning season golf guide has the full detail.

How long should a Chiang Mai golf trip be compared with an Algarve break?

Plan 7 nights with 4-5 rounds in Chiang Mai, against the 3-4 night, 3-round break that suits the Algarve.

A week gives you an arrival day without golf to beat the 7-hour jet lag, two or three rounds, a rest day and a final round. Our Highlands Classic, 5 nights, 4 rounds is the shortest trip we would suggest for European winter golfers. The Lanna Signature, 7 nights, 5 rounds is the format most Algarve converts choose. Our 7-day Chiang Mai golf itinerary shows how the week flows.

Should I book a package or each round direct?

For one round, booking direct can be cheaper. For 4-5 rounds with transfers, a package usually saves money and removes peak-season tee-time risk.

In the Algarve, many golfers self-drive and book tee times online. In Chiang Mai, self-driving is uncommon. A pre-booked private round trip to a course costs around ฿1,400-2,500, and ride-hailing apps are unreliable for 6:30am pickups with a golf bag. A package folds in green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chiang Mai warmer than the Algarve for winter golf?

Yes, by a wide margin. Faro averages a 16C high and a 9C low in January, with about 10 rainy days, according to Rough Guides. Chiang Mai averages roughly 29C highs and 15C lows in January, one of its coolest and driest months, according to WeatherSpark. That means shorts-and-polo golf from the first tee instead of a jumper until 10am. The trade-off is that midday in Chiang Mai can feel hot for golfers from northern Europe, so we book early tee times between 6:30am and 8am in our packages.

Is golf cheaper in Chiang Mai than in the Algarve?

Per round, yes. Algarve guides list Monte Rei from €220 and the Quinta do Lago courses from €114, with a buggy often charged on top. In Chiang Mai our 2026 green-season all-in price, including green fee, caddie and cart, is ฿3,400 at Highlands and ฿3,700 at Alpine. Winter is Chiang Mai's high season, so expect higher rates from November to March, but still usually well below a top Algarve tee time. The longer flight eats some of that saving, so the gap matters most on trips of 5+ rounds.

How long is the flight from the UK to Chiang Mai compared with Faro?

London to Faro is a short-haul hop of around three hours, with direct flights from most UK airports and no time difference in winter. There is no direct UK flight to Chiang Mai. Most golfers connect through Bangkok, Doha, Dubai or Singapore, so door-to-door runs around 15 to 18 hours depending on the layover, and Thailand is 7 hours ahead of the UK in winter. That jet lag is why we leave arrival day golf-free and start with a gentle first round.

Do I need a caddie in Chiang Mai like in the Algarve?

In the Algarve you normally play with a buggy or trolley and no caddie. In Chiang Mai a caddie is mandatory, one per golfer, and you cannot opt out. The caddie fee to the course is usually ฿300 to ฿400, and a separate cash tip of ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes is expected, more for an excellent caddie. Caddies read greens, clean clubs and keep score. Most Algarve regulars tell us the caddie turns out to be the part of the trip they talk about most.

When should I avoid Chiang Mai for golf?

Avoid March, and treat late February and early April with caution. That is burning season in northern Thailand, when smoke pushes the air quality index past 150 on many days and well beyond that on the worst. For a winter sun trip, aim for mid-November to early February, when the air is usually clear and the valley views are sharp. If March is your only window, the Algarve is honestly the better choice that month, or shift to Hua Hin or Phuket in southern Thailand.
