Cape Town vs Thailand Golf Holiday: Chiang Mai Compared

Cape Town vs Thailand golf holiday: season, flight time, course quality and real green fees in rand and baht, compared by a Chiang Mai golf operator.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team29 Oct 202610 min read

For a winter-sun golf holiday, Cape Town wins on marquee courses and a short time-zone shift. Chiang Mai wins on cost per round, full caddie service and courses that sit close together. A Chiang Mai all-in round runs ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 in green season (CMGT Golf, 2026). Which one suits you depends on whether you'd rather spend the budget on flights or on golf.

We run golf trips on the ground in Chiang Mai, so we know our side of this comparison first-hand. Cape Town is a superb golf destination and we have tried to be fair to it. This page compares the two on the four things long-haul golfers ask us about most: season, travel, courses and money.

How do Cape Town and Chiang Mai compare at a glance?

Cape Town offers famous courses, a lot of wind and a two-hour time shift from the UK. Chiang Mai offers cheaper all-in rounds, mandatory caddies and every course within about 45 minutes.

When is the golf season in Cape Town versus Chiang Mai?

Both peak during the northern winter. Cape Town's dry season runs roughly November to March, and Chiang Mai's best window is November to early January.

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate. Most of its rain falls in its winter, June to August, so golfers visit in the southern summer. The catch is the wind. The southeaster, which locals call the Cape Doctor, blows most often in the summer months and usually strengthens through the afternoon. A 7am round and a 2pm round on the same course can play very differently.

Chiang Mai's cool, dry season runs November to February. Early mornings on the highland courses sit around 15C to 22C, and afternoon highs reach 28C to 32C. January is the coolest month. Our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide goes through the year month by month.

Which destination is easier to reach from the UK and Europe?

Cape Town is easier. There are nonstop flights from London and only two hours of time difference. Chiang Mai needs at least one connection and a seven-hour time shift.

This is where Cape Town is strongest. You fly overnight, land in the morning and your body clock barely notices. Most golfers can tee off the next day without feeling it.

There are no nonstop flights from the UK to Chiang Mai. Most golfers connect through Bangkok, Doha, Dubai or Singapore. Allow a full travel day, then take an easy day before your first serious round. Our guide to the cheapest way to fly from the UK to Chiang Mai compares the routes.

Once you arrive, Chiang Mai is the simpler of the two. CNX airport is about 4 km from the Old City, 10 to 15 minutes by taxi for ฿150 to ฿200. North Hill is about 15 minutes from the airport, and most courses are 30 to 45 minutes out.

Which has the better golf courses?

Cape Town has the deeper list of famous names. Chiang Mai has fewer headline courses, but the best ones are in very good condition and you never drive far between them.

Cape Town makes a strong case. Pearl Valley is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course in the Winelands. Steenberg sits below the mountains in the southern suburbs. Royal Cape is one of the oldest golf clubs in Africa. A week there gives you real variety: parkland, mountain settings and some exposed, windy holes.

Chiang Mai's best courses hold their own. Our Chiang Mai golf course directory lists every course, and these are the ones we book most:

  • Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa: a Lee Schmidt design from 2005 with 27 holes, paspalum grass and more than 130 bunkers. It is the best-conditioned course in the region.
  • Alpine Golf Resort: a Ron Garl design from 2008 with 27 holes, stretching to about 7,540 yards. Highlights are the 652-yard par-5 4th and an island-green par-3. It has hosted the Asian Tour.
  • Royal Chiang Mai: a Peter Thomson design from 1996 with a British links feel and pot bunkers. Course condition varies.
  • Gassan Panorama: 7,761 yards, including a 666-yard par-6.

We'll be honest about the weaker courses too. Summit Green Valley is the most expensive course in the region, but we keep hearing complaints about its greens. Mae Jo is close to town but has the weakest conditioning of the premium courses. Our best golf courses in Chiang Mai ranking explains where each one fits.

How much does a round cost in each?

A round at a top Cape Town club costs about R2,500 or more once you add a cart and caddie. In Chiang Mai, all-in rounds cost ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 in green season.

Cape Town clubs charge for each part separately. For the September 2025 to March 2026 season, South African Tourism listed Royal Cape at R1,550 for 18 holes, plus R550 for a cart and R400 for a caddie (accessed 2026-10-29). Steenberg now sets its green fees dynamically, so they change with demand and weather. Its visitor rates for October 2026 to September 2027 (accessed 2026-10-29) list a cart at R800 and a caddie at R550 for 18 holes, both on top of the green fee.

In Chiang Mai, the green-season all-in rate covers the green fee, caddie and cart. At Highlands it is ฿3,400 (฿2,250 green fee, ฿400 caddie, ฿750 cart). At Alpine it is ฿3,700. On top of that, tip your caddie ฿400 to ฿600. Our cart and caddie fees guide breaks the costs down course by course.

High-season rates in Chiang Mai, from November to March, are higher and published less consistently. We quote them for each booking rather than print a figure that may be out of date.

Where does the total trip budget stretch further?

Flights to Chiang Mai cost more, but golf, hotels and transfers cost less. On a trip of four or more rounds, Chiang Mai usually works out cheaper.

The answer depends on how long you stay. On a short three-round trip, the cheaper flight to Cape Town can close the gap. Over seven nights and five rounds, the saving on every round in Chiang Mai adds up, along with cheaper hotels, meals and post-round massages.

Transfers matter as well. A pre-booked private return transfer to a Chiang Mai course costs about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500. Relying on Grab for a 6:30am pickup with a full tour bag is a gamble. In the Cape, many golfers hire a car and drive themselves to the Winelands. That is easy enough, but one person in the group has to skip the wine after the round.

How does the caddie experience differ?

In Chiang Mai, caddies are mandatory and do almost everything for you. In Cape Town they are mostly optional, although a few clubs, such as Steenberg, have listed them as compulsory.

Every golfer in Chiang Mai gets their own caddie, who drives the cart, reads greens, cleans clubs and keeps score. You pay a ฿300 to ฿400 caddie fee to the course and give your caddie a ฿400 to ฿600 cash tip at the bag drop. Many caddies speak some English, and the regulars at the bigger courses know every break on their greens. Our Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette.

In Cape Town, many golfers take a cart and play without a caddie, which suits players who like to read their own putts. If you want full service on every hole, Thailand gives you that as standard.

Who should choose Cape Town, and who should choose Chiang Mai?

Choose Cape Town for famous courses and almost no jet lag. Choose Chiang Mai if you want more rounds for your money, full caddie service and a short drive to every course.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cape Town or Chiang Mai cheaper for a golf holiday?

Chiang Mai usually costs less per round once you add up everything you pay at the course. Green-season all-in rates (green fee, caddie and cart) run from ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy to ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). In Cape Town, Royal Cape listed a R1,550 green fee plus R550 for a cart and R400 for a caddie for the 2025-26 season (South African Tourism). Steenberg charges R800 for a cart on top of a green fee that changes with demand. Flights to Chiang Mai usually cost more, so compare the price of the whole trip, not a single round.

When is the best time to play golf in Cape Town and Chiang Mai?

The two seasons overlap. Cape Town's dry summer runs roughly November to March, and Chiang Mai's cool, dry peak runs November to February, so both work well for an escape from the northern winter. The trade-offs are different. Cape Town's southeaster wind, known as the Cape Doctor, blows hardest on summer afternoons, so book morning tee times. In Chiang Mai, burning-season haze builds from mid-January and peaks in March, so we steer golfers to November, December and early January.

Are the golf courses better in Cape Town or Chiang Mai?

Cape Town has more famous names and a deeper top tier, with Pearl Valley, Steenberg and Royal Cape all within reach of the city. Chiang Mai has fewer marquee courses, but the best ones are strong. Chiang Mai Highlands is the best-conditioned course in the region, and Alpine has hosted the Asian Tour. Chiang Mai's courses sit around one valley, usually 30 to 45 minutes from town, so a five-round trip needs no long transfers. Around Cape Town, the best courses spread from the Atlantic coast out to the Winelands.

Do I need a handicap certificate to play golf in Cape Town or Thailand?

In Cape Town, take one with you. Many leading South African clubs ask visitors for proof of handicap and some set a maximum, so check with each club when you book. In Chiang Mai, courses generally don't ask for an official handicap. They expect you to be course-ready and keep pace, and singles or pairs may be grouped with other players. For a mixed-ability group, or a partner who is newer to the game, Thailand is the easier place to get everyone on the tee.

Are caddies mandatory in Cape Town like they are in Thailand?

Not usually. Most Cape Town clubs make caddies optional. Steenberg is an exception: South African Tourism listed its caddie as compulsory for the 2025-26 season, and the club's own 2026-27 visitor rates put a caddie at R550 for 18 holes. In Chiang Mai, every course requires one caddie per golfer. The caddie fee paid to the course runs ฿300 to ฿400, and you tip your caddie ฿400 to ฿600 in cash at the bag drop. Thai caddies drive the cart, read greens and keep score, so you get more service than the fee suggests.
