Early Breakfast in Chiang Mai at 6am: Spots Before Golf

Early breakfast in Chiang Mai at 6am before a dawn tee time: which spots are open, when the hotel or clubhouse is smarter, and how to time it.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team03 Nov 20268 min read

For breakfast in Chiang Mai at 6am, go to Jok SomPhet (open 24 hours) or Kai Kata Lert Ros (opens 6am), or eat at the clubhouse. Most cafes open at 7am or later. With courses 30 to 45 minutes out of town, a 7:00am tee time means a 5:45am pickup, so a hotel breakfast box or the clubhouse is often the better plan.

Which Chiang Mai breakfast spots are open at 6am?

Jok SomPhet runs 24 hours, Kai Kata Lert Ros opens at 6am, and Tai Thun Baan opens at 6:30am. Almost everything else opens at 7am or later.

We checked opening hours against Time Out's Chiang Mai local breakfast list (accessed 2026-11-03). Only three places on that list open before 7am. Of those, only Jok SomPhet suits a 5am start.

Hours: Time Out Chiang Mai, accessed 2026-11-03. Tee-time fit assumes 30-45 min transfer plus arriving 30-45 min early (CMGT Golf, 2026). Small local shops change hours often, so confirm the night before.

Is Jok SomPhet worth a pre-dawn stop?

Yes, if you are staying in or near the Old City. It is the one hot, sit-down Thai breakfast that is reliably open at 5am.

Jok SomPhet sits on Sri Poom Road, by the northeast corner of the moat. You pick your base and protein. The bowl comes topped with crispy rice noodles, and an extra soft-boiled egg is worth adding. Prices sit in the cheap street-food range, so a bowl and a drink cost far less than a hotel buffet.

Jok is good food for golf. It is warm, quick, and easy on the stomach at 5am. In our experience a bowl takes about 10 minutes from sitting down to paying, which makes it workable even on a tight pickup.

The downside is the route. If you are staying in Nimman or out by the airport, getting there adds 15 to 20 minutes in the wrong direction for courses in the south and southwest. In that case it does not help, and the hotel or clubhouse is the smarter call.

How early do I need to eat for a dawn tee time?

Work backwards from your tee time. A 7:00am tee time at a course 40 minutes away means breakfast before 5:30am or at the course.

Courses ring the valley, generally 30 to 45 minutes from the Old City. Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes away, and Mae Jo Golf Club is about 20. North Hill Golf Club is around 15 minutes from the airport. The Gassan courses in Lamphun and Gassan Khuntan are the furthest, at 45 minutes or more.

Our timing rule: tee time, minus your arrival buffer, minus the transfer. That gives your pickup time. Breakfast has to fit before it or after you arrive. The arrival buffer matters more than people expect: you pay green fees at the counter, meet your caddie, load the cart and ideally hit a bucket on the range. Our best tee times guide explains why the first slots are worth the early alarm.

When is the hotel the better call?

When your pickup is before the buffet opens. Order a breakfast box the night before. Most hotels will make one if you ask by early evening.

Many Chiang Mai hotel buffets open at 6:00 or 6:30am. That is often after your driver arrives. A breakfast box usually means a sandwich, fruit, a pastry and a juice, and many hotels provide it at no extra charge when breakfast is in your room rate. Eat it in the van on the way out.

Where you stay changes the plan a lot. Our guide on where to base yourself for a Chiang Mai golf trip compares Old City, Nimman and resort stays partly on this point.

Is clubhouse breakfast any good?

It is the most efficient option and is decent, but not memorable. Expect congee, fried rice, eggs, toast and coffee rather than a full menu.

Eating at the course means no detour and no rush. You arrive, check in, meet your caddie and eat while the bag goes on the cart. Clubhouses at resort courses like Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa and Alpine Golf Resort are used to early groups through the November to March high season.

There are trade-offs. Menus are short. Kitchen hours vary by course and season, so confirm at booking. When two large groups arrive together, a plate of eggs can take 20 minutes, so build in a buffer. The fuller clubhouse menus are really for lunch after the round, not 6am.

What should I eat before a round in Chiang Mai heat?

Eat something warm with carbohydrate and some protein: jok with egg, or kai kata with bread. Save fried patongo for a snack.

Even in the cool months, late-morning temperatures often climb into the high 20s or low 30s Celsius, and a round with a caddie takes four and a half to five hours. Jok gives you salt and fluid. Kai kata gives you protein that lasts to the turn. Patongo is a real Chiang Mai breakfast tradition, but on its own it is mostly fried dough.

Drink a good glass or two of water before you tee off. Put a banana or a cereal bar in your bag, because halfway huts vary in what they stock. Our guide to beating the heat on Chiang Mai courses covers hydration for green-season rounds.

What about a later tee time and a proper breakfast?

Book a tee time from 8:30am and you open up the full breakfast scene: Tai Thun Baan, Khao Ngai, Baan Baan and many more.

A later start costs you some cool air and a quieter course. In return you get a relaxed sit-down Thai breakfast. Khao Ngai, near the university on the Suthep side, makes a crisp-egg moo maggi that fills you up for 18 holes. Chiang Mai CityLife's breakfast roundup (accessed 2026-11-03; the list is older, so check hours) has more local picks.

On a rest day, skip the early start entirely. Our best brunch in Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai coffee guide cover slow mornings.

Does the burning season change breakfast plans?

Yes. From roughly mid-January to mid-April, check air quality at 5am. Haze can make an open-air street breakfast unpleasant on bad days.

Smoke usually peaks around March. On bad mornings we move guests to an indoor hotel or clubhouse breakfast and keep outdoor time before the round short. See our burning season golf guide for how we plan rounds around it.

How does a package handle early mornings?

A package folds the driver, pickup timing and hotel into one plan. We set pickups by tee time and arrange breakfast boxes or clubhouse breakfast.

Booking courses one by one leaves you to sort transfers yourself. Ride-hailing at 5:30am with a full golf bag is hit and miss, and a pre-booked private round trip to a course typically runs a few thousand baht a day if you arrange it alone. Our golf packages include green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver and on-the-ground support, so the schedule is built around your tee times. For a short trip, the Weekend Warrior package is a three-night option. Every trip starts with an enquiry, and we confirm tee times with the courses before sending your final schedule.

To be honest, if you are playing one round at Lanna Golf Club, 10 minutes from the Old City, a package does not pay off. Book it directly, eat at Kai Kata Lert Ros at 6am, and take a taxi. For three or more rounds at courses spread around the valley, the logistics add up quickly, and that is where we earn our place. Tell us your dates through our golf page and we will suggest a course mix.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I eat breakfast in Chiang Mai at 6am?

Jok SomPhet on Sri Poom Road is the safest bet. Time Out lists it as open 24 hours, and it serves jok (rice porridge) with pork, a soft egg and crispy noodles, so it works at 5am or 6am. Kai Kata Lert Ros on Prapokklao Road opens at 6am for Thai-style pan eggs and coffee. Tai Thun Baan on Chang Moi Kao Road opens at 6:30am. Most Western cafes open at 7am or later, which is too late for a dawn tee time 30 to 45 minutes out of town. Convenience stores are open around the clock as a fallback.

Should I eat at my hotel or at the golf course clubhouse?

For a tee time before 7:30am, ask your hotel for a breakfast box the night before. Many hotel buffets open at 6:00 or 6:30am, which is often after your pickup. Clubhouse breakfast is a good option if you arrive 45 minutes early, because you eat next to the range and the first tee with no detour. The trade-off is choice: clubhouse menus are short, usually fried rice, congee, eggs and toast, and the kitchen can be slow when a large group lands at once. Confirm the clubhouse kitchen hours at booking.

How early do I need to leave my hotel for a dawn tee time?

Most Chiang Mai courses ring the valley 30 to 45 minutes from the Old City, with Lanna Golf Club about 10 minutes away and Mae Jo about 20. Aim to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your tee time to check in, pay, meet your caddie and hit a few balls. For a 7:00am tee at a course 40 minutes out, that means leaving at about 5:45am. Breakfast therefore needs to happen before 5:30am, in the car, or at the clubhouse. That is why most of our guests on early tees eat at the course.

What is a good Thai breakfast to eat before a round of golf?

Jok (rice porridge) is the classic choice. It is warm, easy on the stomach, and quick to eat. Kai kata, Thai pan eggs with sausage and bread, gives you more protein. Patongo, the fried dough often dipped in congee or custard, is a traditional Chiang Mai breakfast but light on staying power. For a five-hour round in heat, pair a solid breakfast with plenty of water. Carry a banana or a snack for the turn, because halfway huts vary in what they stock.

Do CMGT Golf packages include breakfast before golf?

Our packages include your hotel, green fees, caddies, carts and a private driver with transfers. Hotel breakfast is normally part of the room rate, and we time pickups around your tee time. When a tee time is earlier than the hotel buffet opens, we ask the hotel for a breakfast box or plan a clubhouse breakfast on arrival. Exact inclusions depend on the hotel you choose, so we confirm them in your quote. Send an enquiry through our golf page and we will build the schedule around your tee times.
