How to Work With a Thai Caddie: Reads, Yardages, Clubs

How to work with a caddie in Thailand: when to trust green reads, how yardages are called, club selection, the phrases that help, and what to tip after 18.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team03 Nov 20269 min read

To work well with a Thai caddie, let her handle the bag, the line on the greens and course knowledge, while you keep control of pace, final club choice and the rules. Caddies are standard at Chiang Mai courses, usually cost ฿300-400 per round paid to the course, and expect a ฿400-600 cash tip. Brief her on the first tee and you start gaining shots within a few holes.

Why does every Chiang Mai course give me a caddie?

Thai golf runs on the caddie system: one caddie per golfer, assigned at check-in, usually a woman, and part of every round.

At home you might push a trolley and read your own putts. In Thailand the caddie rides or walks with the cart, cleans clubs and ball, rakes bunkers, repairs pitch marks, keeps score and reads every green. The course charges a caddie fee, which in Chiang Mai usually sits at ฿300-400 (CMGT Golf, 2026). At Chiang Mai Highlands the green-season all-in rate of ฿3,400 includes a ฿400 caddie fee alongside the ฿2,250 green fee and ฿750 cart.

For background on why the system exists and how caddies earn, read our guide to Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping. This post is the practical side: how to actually work with her over 18 holes, from the first-tee briefing to the tip at the bag drop.

What should I tell my caddie on the first tee?

Spend sixty seconds briefing her: your typical 7-iron carry, your shot shape, and whether you want reads on every putt.

This is the step most first-timers skip. Your caddie has no idea whether you hit a 7-iron 130 or 170 yards. Tell her one anchor number, for example "7-iron, 150", and she will scale everything else off it. Then tell her your miss. "I fade" or "I hook" changes where she tells you to aim off the tee and into greens.

Agree on how much help you want. Some golfers want a full read on every putt. Others want only the break direction and prefer to judge pace. Some want the club handed to them, some want to choose. Say it once, early, and she will follow it all day.

How do Thai caddies call yardages?

Most give distance to the flag in yards, measured from marker posts or sprinkler heads, then add a quick uphill, downhill or wind adjustment.

Expect to hear "one-four-five, flag" or "one hundred sixty, play one more club." Many Chiang Mai courses mark distances with posts or plates in the fairway, and caddies count from those. On flat holes the numbers are usually sound. On raised tees and approaches the raw yardage matters less than her adjustment, and that adjustment is where local knowledge beats your rangefinder.

Some Chiang Mai courses sit in the foothills, and a number of holes drop steeply toward the valley. Our guide to altitude and ball flight in Chiang Mai explains how that affects carry. Use your laser or GPS watch for the number, and ask her "play long or short?" for the adjustment.

Should I trust my caddie's green reads?

Trust her on break direction and grain, keep pace for yourself, and test the match on the first three greens.

Caddies read the same greens daily and know the local quirks: which putts drift toward the mountains, where grain pulls the ball on warm-season grass, which back-to-front slopes are faster than they look. At Alpine Golf Resort, a Ron Garl design with large, contoured greens, that knowledge is worth having.

She will often line up your ball for you and point to a spot. A standard read is given for an average putter. If you die the ball into the hole, you need more break than she called. If you charge it, you need less. Hit your first few putts at your normal pace, watch where they miss, and adjust. By the turn you will know her reads well.

Should I let my caddie pick my clubs?

Let her suggest, but make the final choice yourself, at least until you have seen her judgement over five or six holes.

A caddie will often pull a club before you ask. That is useful when she knows the hole plays into the wind or uphill. It is less useful early in the round, when she is still guessing your distances. If she hands you the 8 and you think it is a 7, say "seven" and take it. That is normal and nobody is offended.

Once she has seen a few of your full shots, her suggestions get much sharper. Most guests we host are happy to take her club by the back nine.

What phrases help when English is limited?

Short English golf words plus a few Thai phrases cover almost everything: yardage, club, line, speed and thank you.

Caddies at the main resort courses usually know golf English well. At smaller local clubs, English drops off. Keep it simple:

  • "How far?" or "Flag?" for yardage
  • "Which club?" or just hold up the club and look at her
  • "Left edge? Right edge?" on putts
  • "Fast? Slow?" for green speed
  • Khob khun khrap (men) or khob khun kha (women) for thank you
  • Mai pen rai for "no problem" after a bad shot

Many caddies also know Korean and Japanese golf terms because of the visitor mix. Pointing and holding up fingers for club numbers works fine. A smile after a good read goes a long way.

What are the honest downsides of the caddie system?

Quality varies by course and by caddie, reads are pitched at an average putter, and some local habits clash with the formal Rules of Golf.

Not every caddie is great. At the top courses most are strong. At busier local courses you may get a newer caddie still learning, and you will not know until a few holes in. Swapping mid-round is rarely practical, so manage expectations and help her help you with a clear briefing.

The bigger issue is rules. Long-running columns in Pattaya Mail on caddies breaching the Rules of Golf (accessed 2026-11-03) describe caddies nudging a ball out of a bad lie or standing behind a player on the line of play during setup. That last one is a breach under the current Rules. In a friendly game it rarely matters. In a competition or a betting game, say "no help, please" and handle your own lie and drops.

How much do I tip, and when?

Tip ฿400-600 in cash per 18 holes, handed directly to your caddie at the bag drop after the round, with more for an excellent day.

The tip is separate from the caddie fee and it is expected. Golfsavers (accessed 2026-11-03) recommends a minimum of ฿400 in Thailand and ฿500 for exceptional service. For a premium course and an outstanding caddie, going above that is generous and appreciated.

Bring ฿100 and ฿500 notes. Hand it over when she cleans and returns your clubs, not through the pro shop. For how fees and tips stack up across courses, see our breakdown of cart and caddie fees in Chiang Mai.

Does the caddie experience differ by course?

Yes. Resort courses like Highlands and Alpine tend to have the most experienced, English-confident caddies; smaller local clubs are friendlier but more variable.

At Royal Chiang Mai, a Peter Thomson design with pot bunkers and run-offs, a caddie who knows which side of each green feeds the ball away is worth a lot. At Mae Jo, north of the city, rounds tend to be relaxed and caddies are chatty. At North Hill and the Gassan courses in Lamphun the standard is good and the rates are often lower. Our Chiang Mai golf packages page shows which courses we combine on each trip.

Our high season runs from November to March, and in the busiest weeks the most in-demand caddies get taken early. If you have a great caddie, ask the starter whether you can request her again for a return round. Many courses allow it by caddie number.

Does a package change anything about caddies?

Caddie fees are already inside every package we quote, so on the course you only handle the tip; we also brief you on each course beforehand.

When you book each course alone, you pay green fee, caddie fee and cart separately at the counter, then arrange your own transfer. Our Chiang Mai golf packages bundle green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver and airport transfers, with on-the-ground support if a tee time shifts. The tip stays between you and your caddie.

To be honest about the maths: for a single round, booking direct can be cheaper. Packages usually make the most sense once you play three or more rounds, which is why the Weekend Warrior and Highlands Classic are the trips we quote most. We are enquiry-driven: tell us your dates and group, and we send a quote you confirm with a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play without a caddie in Chiang Mai?

Rarely. Thai courses assign one caddie per golfer as standard, and at the resort courses a caddie is part of every round. The caddie fee goes to the course and in Chiang Mai usually runs ฿300-400. It is often bundled into an all-in rate with the green fee and cart. A few smaller clubs near the city are more flexible, but policies change, so ask before you plan around walking alone. If you rarely use a caddie at home, treat it as part of the trip rather than a cost to avoid. A good one saves you shots.

Should I trust my Thai caddie's green reads?

Trust the break direction, check the pace yourself. Caddies at courses like Chiang Mai Highlands and Alpine walk those greens every day, so they know where the grain runs and which putts fall toward the valley. Where reads go wrong is speed: a caddie gauges a line for an average putter, not for how firmly you hit it. Our habit on the first few holes is to ask for the line, then decide the pace ourselves and see how the two match. By the turn you will know whether to take her read as given or adjust it.

How much should I tip my caddie in Thailand?

In Chiang Mai, ฿400-600 per 18 holes is the normal range for a good round, with more for an excellent caddie at a premium course. Golfsavers recommends a minimum of ฿400 in Thailand and ฿500 for exceptional service. The tip is separate from the caddie fee you pay the course. It is expected, and it goes directly to your caddie in cash at the bag drop after the round. Bring small notes. Some clubs post their own guidance in the pro shop, so check the board if you see one.

Do Thai caddies speak English?

Enough for golf at the main Chiang Mai resort courses, less so at the smaller local clubs. Most caddies know yardages, club numbers, left, right, uphill, downhill, fast and slow in English, and many pick up Korean and Japanese golf terms too because of the visitor mix. Long explanations get lost. Keep questions short: 'How far to the flag?', 'Which club?', 'Left edge or cup?'. Pointing works. A few Thai words help a lot, especially khob khun khrap or khob khun kha for thank you.

Are caddie yardages accurate?

They are good for flag distance and usually given in yards from the course's marker posts or sprinkler heads, but they are not laser numbers. Expect accuracy within a few yards on flat holes and wider error on raised tees and blind approaches. If you carry a rangefinder or GPS watch, use it alongside the caddie rather than instead of her. Her real value is the adjustment: whether a shot plays a club longer into the slope, which side of the green is safe, and where the wind turns in the valley.
