Night golf in Chiang Mai: where to play under lights

Three Chiang Mai courses play under lights: Gassan Legacy at about ฿1,650 all-in in the late-afternoon window, Summit Green Valley with all 18 holes floodlit, and the 9-hole Star Dome in the city. Evening tee times cost less and skip the afternoon heat. They do not skip the haze.

Which Chiang Mai courses actually have floodlights?

Three courses only: Gassan Legacy in Lamphun, Summit Green Valley in Mae Rim, and the 9-hole Star Dome in town. Nothing else stays lit.

Chiang Mai has more than a dozen playable courses ringing the valley, and the full picture is in our golf in Chiang Mai guide. Alpine, Chiangmai Highlands, Royal Chiang Mai, Mae Jo and North Hill all shut at dusk. So do the other two Gassan layouts, Panorama and Khuntan, despite sharing a brand with the one course that is lit. If a booking site offers you "night golf at Alpine", it is wrong, and you should treat the rest of that quote with suspicion too.

The reason is simple economics. Floodlighting 18 holes is a large capital spend and a permanent power bill, and it only pays back where a course sits close enough to a population centre to fill evening slots on weeknights. Lamphun, Mae Rim and the city fringe qualify. The mountain layouts do not, and their elevation changes would make lighting them expensive and awkward anyway.

What does a night round cost?

Gassan Legacy at roughly ฿1,650 all-in is the cheapest real 18 under lights in the region, around ฿300 below its own daytime rate.

That daytime rate of about ฿1,950 breaks down as roughly ฿900 green fee, ฿300 caddie fee and ฿750 cart, and the cart is compulsory at one golfer per cart, so there is no way to strip it out to save money. The discount applies to tee times inside the published late-afternoon window (Chiang Mai Golf Club rate card, accessed 2026-08-21).

Summit Green Valley is the expensive end. Its published green-season 2026 afternoon rate is about ฿3,200 all-in, made up of roughly ฿2,100 green fee plus ฿400 caddie plus ฿700 compulsory cart, against about ฿3,300 in the morning (Chiang Mai Golf Club rate card, accessed 2026-08-21). A dedicated late-night rate is not published, so treat any quoted figure as provisional until the club confirms it in writing.

None of those numbers include the caddie tip. It runs ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, it is paid in cash directly to your caddie, and you will want small notes because nobody at the bag drop is breaking a ฿1,000 note for you at 19:30 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Budget it as part of the round. It is not optional in practice, and a caddie who has walked you round in the dark, spotted your ball off the lit line and read greens under flat overhead light has earned the upper end of that range.

Two more costs people forget. Rental clubs run roughly ฿500 to ฿1,000 a set depending on the club, and a decent set is worth the money if you are adding an unplanned round rather than carrying sticks all trip. Transfers to Lamphun or Mae Rim and back are ฿800 to ฿1,500 in a private car, which matters more than usual after dark. When does night golf really tee off?

Chiang Mai night golf is a dusk product, not a midnight one. The published discount windows at both 18-hole courses close around 18:00.

This catches people out. You book "night golf", picture a floodlit 21:00 tee time, and arrive to find the starter's last slot was two hours ago. At Gassan Legacy the discounted window runs from mid-afternoon, so a round teed off at 17:00 starts in daylight and finishes fully lit. Sunset in Chiang Mai sits between roughly 18:00 and 18:50 depending on the month, earliest in December and January, latest around June, so a late-afternoon start is what actually delivers the floodlit half of the round.

Work backwards from that. An 18-hole round with a cart in Chiang Mai takes four to four and a half hours when the course is busy, a little under four when it is quiet. Tee off at 15:00 and you finish around 19:15 with the back nine under lights. Tee off at 17:00 and you are playing the majority of the round lit, but you are also relying on the club accepting a start that late, which is exactly the thing that varies.

Star Dome is the one venue that runs genuinely late, because a short nine takes about two hours rather than five, and its city location means staff and golfers are not driving home through rural darkness afterwards.

Is Gassan Legacy the best night round?

Yes for most golfers. It is the flattest and most forgiving Gassan layout, roughly 6,850 yards off the back tees, par 72, and the only lit 18 at a sane price.

Gassan Legacy sits in Lamphun, 30 to 45 minutes south of the Old City depending on when you cross the ring road, and was reworked from an older Lamphun layout in the 2010s. The flat, open ground is exactly what you want after dark, because the lighting has fewer elevation changes and blind shots to hide. Wide fairways forgive the depth-perception problem that ruins night rounds on tighter layouts, and the bunkering is visible rather than hidden behind rises.

Conditioning is generally solid for the money, with the usual Thai green-season caveat that heavy rain in August and September leaves soft fairways and slower greens. Cool season, roughly November to February, is when it plays best, and it is also when the late-afternoon window is most comfortable rather than merely tolerable.

The honest downside is distance. You are driving out to Lamphun and driving back in the dark on roads with variable lighting and unlit motorbikes, which is fine with a pre-booked private driver and much less fine with a ride-hail app at 20:00 in a rural pickup spot where drivers are thin on the ground and cancellations are common.

What is Summit Green Valley like under lights?

All 18 holes are floodlit, water is in play on nearly every hole, and it is the region's priciest round. Condition is the risk.

Where2Golf's assessment of the Denis Griffiths design, which opened around 1990, is blunt: maintenance quality fluctuates "from good to indifferent", while the design itself stays a fair test (Where2Golf, accessed 2026-08-21). That matches what our guests report. The routing is strong, the greens are the gamble, and you should ask about recent aeration before you commit at this price point.

Under lights the water becomes the whole story. A course with lakes on nearly every hole plays materially harder when you cannot judge carry distance over dark water, because there is no visual texture to range off. Bring more balls than you think you need, take the club that carries the hazard comfortably rather than the one that just about does it, and accept a bogey where a daytime round would give you a look at par.

Location is the compensation. Mae Rim is 30 to 40 minutes north of the Old City, the drive back is on a better-lit road than the Lamphun run, and it pairs naturally with a night in the Nimman area afterwards.

Can I play night golf without leaving the city?

Star Dome, a floodlit 9-hole par 36 near the Old City, is the only in-city option. It is a driving range with a golf course attached.

It is roughly ten minutes from the moat and works as an evening filler when a rain delay or a late flight kills your real round. Traveller reports put a bundled nine at around ฿1,400 including caddie and cart, with a foreigner surcharge mentioned in several reviews and a much cheaper promotional rate reported by others, so those figures are dated and worth confirming live before you turn up.

Set expectations correctly. This is a short, tight, functional layout on flat ground with range netting in view, not a resort round. For the other in-city character round, the 9-hole colonial layout at Chiang Mai Gymkhana is daytime only, but it scratches a similar "short round near town" itch.

Does night golf beat the burning season haze?

No. Cool night air sinks into the Chiang Mai basin and traps PM2.5, so evening readings are frequently worse than mid-morning ones.

This is the claim we most often have to correct. Burning season runs from roughly mid-January to mid-April and peaks in March. On 4 March 2026, IQAir ranked Chiang Mai third among the world's most polluted major cities (IQAir newsroom, accessed 2026-08-21). Readings past AQI 200 were recorded repeatedly later that month.

Night golf is a heat solution. In April and May, when daytime highs pass 35C, a 16:30 tee time is genuinely more comfortable than a 12:00 one, and the difference between the two is the difference between enjoying the back nine and enduring it. In March, the smoke is the problem, and the floodlights just light it up. Check the air quality index on the day, carry an N95, and be willing to cancel a round rather than breathe through it for four hours.

What is worse about playing at night?

Depth perception, ball finding and pace. Distance control over water and into unlit rough gets materially harder, and searches take longer.

Expect to lose more balls than a daytime round, expect a slower group ahead of you, and expect the last two holes to feel long. Insects come with the lights, so pack repellent and a long-sleeve layer for the walk between green and cart. Greens read differently when the only light is overhead and flat, because the grain and the subtle slopes you would normally pick up from shadow simply are not visible, so trust your caddie's line more than your own eyes on anything past 15 feet.

Scoring suffers. Most golfers play two to four shots worse under lights than they do in daylight on the same course, and that is worth knowing before you make a bet on the first tee. Golfers who need a properly conditioned, properly lit championship test should play mornings and treat night golf as the extra rather than the main event.

How do I actually book a night round and get home?

Book the tee time first, confirm the last accepted start in writing, then lock the return transfer before you leave the hotel.

The sequence we use: pick the course and the date, ask the club for the genuine last tee time on that specific day rather than the published window, confirm whether the night rate applies to your slot, then book a private car for both legs with a fixed pickup time about five hours after your tee off. Add a phone number for the driver and a WhatsApp thread, because the one thing that reliably goes wrong is the return leg.

Do not rely on a ride-hail app to collect you from a Lamphun clubhouse at 20:00. Coverage is thin outside the city, surge pricing is real, and cancellations at that hour are common. A club shuttle exists at some venues but rarely runs late. The cost difference between a booked private car and a hopeful app booking is a few hundred baht, and the downside of getting it wrong is an hour in a dark car park.

Bring cash for the caddie tip and any pro shop purchases, a light layer for the last few holes when the temperature drops in cool season, and a spare glove because dew comes down fast after sunset and a wet glove is useless.

Where does a night round fit in a golf trip?

As the bonus round on an arrival day or a rest day. It is a cheap extra 18, not a replacement for a premium morning tee time.
