Star Dome night golf Chiang Mai review: floodlit 9 holes

Star Dome is Chiang Mai's in-city floodlit nine, a par-36 loop a few minutes from the southwest corner of the moat, where a visiting golfer should budget roughly ฿700 to ฿1,400 for nine holes all-in. It is a warm-up round and an evening filler, not a destination course. Here is what it actually costs and where it fits.

What exactly is Star Dome Golf Club?

A floodlit nine-hole par-36 course attached to one of northern Thailand's largest driving ranges, sitting inside Chiang Mai city rather than out in the valley.

The address is Suthep, Mueang Chiang Mai, which puts it a few minutes' drive off the moat's southwest corner. That location is the entire point. Every other course worth playing sits 20 to 45 minutes out through valley traffic. Star Dome does not.

One thing to know before you search for it: the club also trades as Pimantip Golf Club, and older signage, taxi drivers and booking directories use both names interchangeably. If your Grab driver looks blank at "Star Dome", say "Pimantip". Directories disagree on the opening year and the named designer is not reliably documented, so we do not quote either.

The card is listed at roughly 3,100 to 3,350 yards for the nine depending on which directory you read. That spread is wide enough that you should just look at the scorecard at the counter rather than trust a number online.

How much does a round at Star Dome actually cost?

Published card: ฿500 green fee for nine, ฿200 caddie, ฿800 cart. Bundled and promotional nine-hole pricing has been reported from around ฿700 up to about ฿1,400 per person.

Two things jump out. First, the cart costs more than the green fee, which is unusual and means walking is where the value is if the club allows it that evening. Second, there is no published nine-hole bundle, which is why our planning range is ฿700 to ฿1,400 rather than a single figure.

Where does the top of that range come from? A first-hand account of a Star Dome night round records roughly ฿700 for green fee, cart and caddie on promotion, about ฿400 for a shared rental set, and a ฿500 caddie tip, landing near ฿1,400 per player. That account is over a decade old, so treat the structure as accurate and the numbers as indicative only.

Is the foreigner surcharge real?

Yes. The 18-hole bundle with caddie and cart lists at ฿1,000 for Thai golfers and ฿1,500 for foreigners on the same round.

The caddie-only bundle shows the same pattern: ฿800 Thai against roughly ฿1,100 to ฿1,200 foreigner, depending on which listing you read. Dual pricing is standard at Thai in-city and municipal-adjacent courses and it is published, not improvised. You are not being singled out at the till.

It does change the value maths, though. At ฿1,500 for 18 holes on a short in-city nine played twice, you are inside a few hundred baht of the all-in green-season rate at Gassan Panorama, a full-length championship layout well over 7,000 yards with proper elevation change and conditioning to match. Star Dome is buying you convenience and a floodlit tee time, not golf per baht.

What time can you actually play?

Listings conflict between a 21:00 close and a late-night close. Plan to tee off between 18:30 and 19:30 and confirm the last slot by phone on the day.

The Trip.com listing, accessed 2026-08-20, shows 06:00 to 21:00. Several golf directories describe early morning through to late night with separate day and night sessions. The published account referenced above teed off at 19:30.

Our working assumption for guests is simple: arrive around 18:00, warm up on the range while the light fades, tee off before 19:30, and be off the course by 21:30. A relaxed nine at night runs about two hours because the caddies control the pace and the field is thin.

How do you get there and get a slot?

Grab from the Old City is a short hop, the airport is close by, and the booking process is a phone call or a walk-in rather than an app.

From inside the moat, expect a few minutes by Grab or red songthaew outside rush hour, and up to fifteen when the Suthep road backs up around 17:30. From CNX arrivals it is typically ten to fifteen minutes, which is why the arrival evening works so well. Ask the driver for Pimantip if Star Dome draws a blank.

Booking is old-fashioned. Call the club on the day, ask for the night session, and give your name and player count. There is no reliable online tee sheet, and the evening field is rarely full enough to need one. If you want the club and cart sorted before you arrive, ask on the phone rather than assuming rental stock is sitting there. Bring cash. Card acceptance at the smaller in-city clubs is inconsistent and the caddie tip is cash regardless.

How does it play under floodlights?

Short, flat, water in play on effectively every hole, and well lit for approach shots but poor for tracking a driver.

The lighting is designed around the range, and it shows. Wedges and mid-irons are easy to follow. Full drivers disappear into the dark at the top of their flight and you are trusting your caddie to tell you where the ball finished. That is not a defect so much as the nature of night golf, but it changes how you play: club down, keep it in front of you, and accept that a wild one is a lost ball rather than a search.

Water is the defining feature. Reports consistently describe it coming into play on every hole. On a flat, short par 36 that is the only real defence the course has, and it is enough to make a scorecard ugly if you attack it. Play to the fat side, take the extra club over the carry, and let the caddie pick the line. Bring more balls than you think you need. The pro shop sells used balls in small lots at low prices, so a bad night is cheap to fix.

Why play at night rather than in the morning?

Because Chiang Mai's April average high sits around 36C against an average low near 23C. Sunset removes most of that problem.

From March through May a midday round on an exposed valley course is genuinely unpleasant, and the morning tee sheets fill first for exactly that reason.

Night golf also fits the traveller's day better than the golfer's day. You keep the daylight for temples, cooking classes and the Old City, then play in the evening. That is why a night nine works well as an add-on for couples and mixed groups where only one person is playing every round.

In the cool season the logic partly reverses. Overnight lows in December and January can drop into the mid-teens Celsius, so an evening round then can be genuinely chilly in a golf shirt. Take a layer.

What is the honest downside?

Floodlights do not filter smoke. During burning season an evening round is the same air as a daytime round, and the course is a nine, not a day out.

Chiang Mai's agricultural burning season runs from roughly mid-January into April and peaks in March. In the worst weeks the city regularly appears near the top of live world pollution rankings, with PM2.5 well into the unhealthy or hazardous bands. Two hours of walking golf in that is a bad trade at any price. Check IQAir or aqicn on the day, carry an N95, and treat cancellation as a normal outcome rather than a failure. The second downside is scale. Nine holes on a short in-city loop is a pleasant evening, not a round you will remember in five years. Nobody flies to Thailand for Star Dome.

How does it compare with Chiang Mai's other short courses?

Star Dome wins on floodlights and proximity. Lanna wins on price and the option to walk. Gymkhana wins on character and costs less than either.

If floodlights are the whole reason you are interested, note that Star Dome is not the only option. Gassan Legacy runs night golf on a full 18-hole Schmidt-Curley renovation about 30 to 45 minutes south in Lamphun, at an all-in rate that typically lands well above the Star Dome nine, and Summit Green Valley also floodlights. Both are better golf. Star Dome is closer.

What should you bring and wear?

Collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes, cash for the tip, and a sleeve more balls than you would normally carry.

Thai dress code applies even at a relaxed in-city nine: no denim, no sport shorts, no sandals, no collarless shirts. Rental sets exist and run from a few hundred baht for a shared set up to around ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 for a full set at the bigger clubs, but exact pricing here is not published, so ask on the phone.

The caddie is mandatory, as everywhere in Thailand, and the tip is separate from the caddie fee and paid in cash directly at the end. Across Chiang Mai the norm is ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes (CMGT Golf, 2026), so a proportionate nine-hole tip is ฿200 to ฿300. Be aware that the account cited above reports a ฿500 minimum being requested at Star Dome, which is why we tell guests to ask about tip expectations before teeing off.

Does Star Dome fit into a golf package?

Rarely as a main round, often as a bonus. We slot it into arrival evenings and rest days rather than counting it as one of your rounds.
