Chiang Mai golf course conditions are at their best from November to February. Rain falls on only about 1 to 5 days a month, fairways are firm and greens run fast. The green season (June to October) gives you softer, slower surfaces but cheaper rates. The hot, smoky months of March and April are the ones where the air, more than the grass, spoils the round.
When are Chiang Mai golf courses in the best condition?
November to February. Dry weather and cool mornings give firm fairways and fast, true greens, and courses have had the green season to recover.
The monsoon ends in October. Averages drop from about 120 mm of rain across 12 days in October to about 20 mm across 2 days in December, according to Climates to Travel (accessed 2026-09-27). The ground firms up quickly. By mid-November drives run out again, and greens at the better courses roll at full speed.
January is usually the high point. Early mornings are cool, with lows typically in the mid-teens Celsius, so dew burns off slowly and the first hour of play is crisp. Mountain views are clear until the haze starts. The downside is that everyone else wants these weeks too. This is high season (1 November to 31 March), so you pay top rates and weekend tee times at the leading courses go first. How do conditions change month by month?
Surfaces follow the rain. They are firmest from December to March, soften from May, are wettest in August and September, and recover in November.

The table is a general guide. Course by course, conditions vary much more than they do by calendar month. A top course in September can still be in better shape than a weaker one in January, which is why the course you pick matters as much as the dates you fly.
Which courses hold their condition best all year?
Chiang Mai Highlands and Alpine lead year round. North Hill is the value pick. Courses with weaker maintenance drop off most in the wet months.
Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa has paspalum fairways and TifEagle greens, and Golfasian (accessed 2026-09-27) reports stimp readings of about 9.5 to 10.5. It is the benchmark in the valley. Alpine Golf Resort, which has hosted Asian Tour golf, is a close second and copes well with wet weeks. North Hill is about 15 minutes from the airport and plays like a private club for less money.

Which courses have the most variable conditions?
Mae Jo, Summit Green Valley, Gassan Khuntan and Chiangmai Inthanon get the most mixed reports. Before you book one, check how it has played recently.
We would rather you hear this from us than find out on the first tee. Mae Jo sits north of the city and has the weakest conditioning of the premium group, and play is often slow. Summit Green Valley sits at the top end on price, yet its greens attract complaints again and again. Gassan Khuntan is the least well kept of the three Gassan courses. Recent reviews of Chiangmai Inthanon say its condition has slipped.
Royal Chiang Mai falls in between. It is a Peter Thomson design with a links feel, but conditions vary from visit to visit. Gassan Panorama depends heavily on the season: it is great when dry and hard work after a wet week.
What are rainy-season greens really like?
They are slower, softer and occasionally sandy after maintenance, but they are playable almost every morning. Storms usually come in the afternoon, not at 7am.
From May to October you will see less roll off the tee, approach shots that stop dead on the greens and some cart-path-only days after a night of heavy rain. Greens can run a foot or two slower than they do in January. Bunkers can hold water, and relief from casual water comes up more often. Pack a spare glove, a light rain jacket and a towel for the grips.

Does burning season damage the courses?
The turf is not the problem. The air is. From mid-January to mid-April, AQI often goes above 150, and the worst days, usually in March, go far higher.
In the dry months fairways firm right up, and on courses with weaker watering they can brown off in places. The real issue is smoke. Chiang Mai regularly ranks among the most polluted cities in the world during bad spells, and some days readings climb well into the hazardous range. How do maintenance and green coring affect your round?
Greens that have just been cored play bumpy and slow for a week or two. Maintenance dates change every year, so check them before you pay.
Every course in the valley cores, top-dresses and sands its greens at some point each year. Dates are not published reliably in advance, and one course's schedule tells you nothing about its neighbour's. The risk is highest in the green season, when courses have the fewest bookings to lose.

Travel from November to early February, put Highlands and Alpine at the heart of the trip, fill the other days with value courses, and tee off early.

Can you trust online reviews of course conditions?
Only recent ones. A review from 18 months ago tells you almost nothing, because conditions change with the season, the budget and the maintenance calendar.
Give most weight to reviews from the last three months, and check which month the reviewer played in. A September review that complains about slow greens is describing the season, not a failing course. Several reports saying greens are thin in the dry season are a real warning. When are Chiang Mai golf courses in the best condition?

Does burning season affect course conditions in Chiang Mai?
It affects the air more than the turf. From about mid-January to mid-April, and usually worst in March, smoke from agricultural and forest fires can push the AQI past 150, and on the worst days readings have gone well beyond that. The grass stays dry and firm, but the mountain views vanish and playing 18 holes in heavy smoke is a real health risk. Check IQAir each morning, carry an N95 and have a backup date. Some years it is better to move a March trip to November.
