You need to be fit enough to ride a cart, swing and stand in 28 to 32C heat for four to five hours, not fit enough to walk 7,000 yards. Carts are included in every resort course's all-in fee, your caddie drives, and a 7:00 cool-season tee time finishes before the heat peaks. Here is how we pace older and less-fit guests through a Chiang Mai golf trip.
Do you walk Chiang Mai golf courses or ride?
You ride. Carts are bundled into the all-in fee at every resort course, the caddie drives, and walking is only permitted at Lanna Golf Club.
This is the fact that settles most of the fitness worry. At Chiang Mai Highlands the ฿3,400 green-season all-in rate includes a ฿750 cart. At Alpine the ฿3,700 all-in rate includes a cart quoted at ฿700 to ฿800 depending on the source (CMGT Golf, 2026, green-season agent rates). You are not offered a walking option and you will not be asked to carry anything. Your caddie drives, pulls the club, cleans the ball, holds the umbrella and points at the cart when you have finished the hole. Caddies are mandatory at every course in the region, one per golfer, and you cannot opt out, which for an older golfer is the best news in this post.
The exception is Lanna Golf Club, about 10 minutes from the Old City and one of the very few Thai courses that allows walking. Its cart fee is quoted anywhere from ฿400 to ฿600 depending on the source, so confirm at booking. Some of our older guests actually prefer it for a gentle warm-up round because they can walk nine holes with a caddie carrying the bag and ride the back nine. The 27 holes are flat, mature and unfussy, and a green fee of around ฿1,350 makes it the cheapest full-length round in town.
If you want a resort feel without the hills, Mae Jo is the closest resort course to the city at about 20 minutes, set in a flat orchard with Doi Suthep views. It has the weakest conditioning of the premium set and a slow pace of play, so we book it early or skip it in the hot months.
How hot does it actually get during a round?
Cool season mornings start at 15 to 22C and top out around 28 to 32C. April averages a 36C high, which is a different sport.
The numbers matter because heat stress is about the combination of temperature, humidity and time. A 7:00 January tee at Highlands feels like an English June morning. A 12:00 April tee at a valley-floor course is dangerous for anyone over 60, and we will not book it. Long-term averages for the city are on climate-data.org (accessed 2026-09-28), built on the Thai Meteorological Department 1991 to 2020 baseline.
Humidity is the variable most visitors miss. March air is dry at around 50 percent but smoky. August air is clean and green but sits at around 80 percent humidity, which slows your sweat evaporation and makes 31C feel heavier than a dry 34C. Our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide covers the month-by-month trade-offs in detail.
Which months are safe for an older or less-fit golfer?
November to February, no caveats. June to October mornings, with rain flexibility. March to mid-April, we say no.
| Period | Morning tee temp | Heat load | Air quality | Our verdict for 60+ golfers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nov to Feb | 15-22C | Low | Clear until late Jan | Book it. First-slot tee times, 4 to 5 rounds is fine |
| Late Feb to mid Apr | 22-27C | High by 10:00 | Burning season, AQI often past 150 | Avoid. Heat plus smoke is a cardiac and respiratory load |
| Late Apr to May | 26-29C | Very high | Clearing after rains start | Night golf only, or skip |
| Jun to Oct | 24-27C | Moderate, humid | Clean | Good value. Tee by 7:00, expect afternoon storms Sep to Oct |
The burning-season warning is not a footnote. In late March 2026 IQAir ranked Chiang Mai among the ten most polluted cities in the world (accessed 2026-09-28), and it has topped that list on individual days in past seasons. Fine particulate plus 35C heat is exactly the combination that puts older golfers in hospital. Read our burning season golf guide if you are locked into those dates, because the honest answer there is to fly south.
What tee time should an older golfer book?
The first slot of the day, 6:30 to 7:30. You finish by 11:30 to 12:00, before the 13:00 to 15:00 heat peak.
This is the single biggest heat control and the reason we hold early blocks for our guests. A 7:00 start at Highlands in December means the front nine plays in 18 to 22C mist and you are in the clubhouse for lunch as the day hits 30C. The same course at 12:00 puts your back nine in the hottest two hours of the day with no shade on the raised tees.
First slots sell out weeks ahead in high season, especially at weekends. Our best tee times guide explains the booking windows. In practice, if you book direct three weeks out in January, you will often be offered 9:30 or later. That is the part of the package that pays for itself for heat-sensitive golfers: we reserve the early blocks and confirm your slot with the deposit.
The other early-tee benefit is pace. First groups out play behind nobody, so a four-ball of steady older golfers gets round in about four hours instead of the five-plus that a mid-morning slot behind a slow group can stretch to. Less time on the course is less time in the heat, full stop.
Which courses are kindest on knees, hips and lungs?
Gassan Legacy, Mae Jo and Lanna are flat. Royal Chiang Mai rolls gently. Highlands and Alpine are the ones to earn on day three.
| Course | Terrain (our read) | Transfer from city | Green-season all-in | Why it suits older golfers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gassan Legacy | Flattest course we book | 30 to 45 min (Lamphun) | ฿1,950 day / ฿1,650 night | Floodlit, so you can play a cool evening round |
| Mae Jo | Flat orchard setting | About 20 min | About ฿2,850 agent all-in | Short transfer, short walks tee to cart |
| Lanna Golf Club | Flat, walking permitted | About 10 min | Green fee about ฿1,350 plus cart | Warm-up round, walk nine, ride nine |
| Royal Chiang Mai | Gently rolling links style | About 30 to 40 min | About ฿2,100 agent all-in | Open, breezy, no forced climbs |
| Chiang Mai Highlands | Undulating, raised tees | About 45 min | ฿3,400 all-in | Best conditioned, but save it for when acclimatised |
| Alpine | Long at 7,470+ yards, rolling | About 45 min | ฿3,700 all-in | Play the forward tees, a 652-yard par 5 is not a vanity test |
The terrain read is ours, from driving guests to every one of these courses across the 2025 to 2026 season. It is not a slope rating, and a flat course on a bad-conditioning day can still be hard work. Royal Chiang Mai's conditioning is variable, so we ask the club the week before rather than assuming.
Gassan Legacy is the one we recommend most for anxious first-timers. Flat, forgiving, floodlit at ฿1,650 all-in for a night round (CMGT Golf, 2026), and the evening air in Lamphun drops to the mid-20s. The trade-off is a 30 to 45 minute transfer each way and a course that strong golfers find plain.
How should a less-fit golfer pace a week?
One round a day, never two. A rest day after every two rounds. Flat course first, hilly course third, night round as the wildcard.
The itinerary we use for guests over 60 on a four-night trip:
- Day 1: arrive, hydrate, no golf. Early dinner.
- Day 2: 7:00 at Royal Chiang Mai or Lanna. Gentle terrain, back at the hotel by 13:00, pool and a massage.
- Day 3: 7:00 at Highlands. Legs are warm, body has adjusted to the heat. Forward tees.
- Day 4: rest morning. Optional 17:30 floodlit nine at Gassan Legacy if the group is feeling good.
- Day 5: fly home, or add Alpine at 7:00 if you have a late flight.
That maps onto our 4-day golf itinerary with the hill course pushed later and the wildcard round made optional. Guests who insist on 36 holes in a day in Chiang Mai heat usually do it once and then cancel the next morning's round. We would rather book you four good rounds than five where the last one is misery.
What should you drink, eat and wear?
Two to three litres of fluid over 18 holes, electrolytes not just water, a breakfast with salt, and a wide-brim hat with a collared UPF shirt.
The CDC's guidance for older adults in extreme heat (accessed 2026-09-28) is the baseline we work from: drink regularly rather than waiting for thirst, avoid strenuous effort in peak heat, rest in air conditioning, and if a doctor has limited your fluids or you take water pills, ask them specifically about hot-weather intake before you travel. That last point matters. Several of our regular guests are on blood-pressure medication, and the combination of diuretics, 32C and four hours outdoors needs a doctor's sign-off, not a guess.
Practically, every course has drink huts every three to four holes selling cold water, sports drinks and coconut water for roughly ฿20 to ฿60. Your caddie will fetch drinks unprompted once she sees you sweating. Eat a proper breakfast with something salty before an early tee, because most courses open the restaurant only after the first groups are out. Pack a small bag of salted nuts or electrolyte tablets in the golf bag as backup.
Dress code helps here. Collared shirts are mandatory, so buy two lightweight UPF polos rather than cotton. Tailored shorts are allowed and are the right call from March to October. A wide-brim hat beats a cap for neck and ear cover, and a small towel soaked at the drink hut and draped over the neck between shots does more than any gadget. The full rules are in our Chiang Mai golf dress code post.
What are the warning signs to stop playing?
Headache, nausea, cramping, dizziness or a sudden stop in sweating. Any one of them means the cart goes to the clubhouse now, not after the hole.
Heat exhaustion in a golfer over 60 looks like a bad hole. You feel wobbly on the tee, the putt does not make sense, you go quiet. Your caddie has seen it many times and will often suggest a break before you ask. Listen to her. Every clubhouse has air conditioning, ice and staff who know the drill, and the resort courses have first-aid rooms.
The honest downside of golf in Chiang Mai for an older group is that the nearest major hospital is in the city, 30 to 45 minutes from most courses. That is a real gap, not a marketing line. It is the reason we keep the private driver at the course during the round for guests with health conditions, so a return to town takes minutes, not a wait for a Grab that may never accept a remote pickup. Bring your travel insurance details and a list of medications in the golf bag, and tell us about any condition when you enquire so the driver and caddie know what to watch for.
Does a package make heat management easier?
Yes, for three or more rounds. We control the tee slots, the air-conditioned transfers and the ability to swap a round. For one round, book direct.
Everything in this post that reduces heat exposure is a booking control: first-slot tee times, a driver who waits, a rest day that can be swapped for a night nine at short notice, and a flat-course fallback if someone's knees complain. Our Northern Value 4-night, 3-round package is the one we shape for older guests most often, with the hill course moved to the final day. For a couple with one round on a layover, a direct booking at Lanna with a Grab there and back is cheaper, and we will tell you so. Read the package vs pay-as-you-go comparison for the numbers.
Send us your dates, ages and any health notes on the golf enquiry page. We are enquiry-driven: you get a quote with tee times, a private driver and hotel, and we confirm with a deposit. No instant booking, and no round we would not put our own parents on.

How fit do I need to be to golf in Chiang Mai?
Fit enough to stand, swing and ride a cart for four to five hours in 28 to 32C heat. That is the honest bar. Nobody walks 7,000 yards here: carts are bundled into the all-in fee at every resort course (฿750 at Highlands, roughly ฿700 to ฿800 at Alpine, CMGT Golf 2026) and your caddie drives. If you can play 18 holes at home in a warm summer, you can play Chiang Mai in November to February. Guests with heart, blood pressure or kidney conditions should ask their doctor about fluid limits first, then book cool-season 7:00 tee times only.
What is the coolest time of day to tee off in Chiang Mai?
First light. In the cool season (November to February) 6:30 to 7:30 tee times start at 15 to 22C on the highland courses and finish before the 13:00 heat peak (CMGT Golf, 2026). In the hot season (March to May) even a 6:30 start reaches 33C by the back nine, so we either book the first slot of the day or shift to floodlit night golf at Gassan Legacy or Summit Green Valley. Afternoon tee times between 12:00 and 15:00 are the ones we steer older guests away from in every month.
Which Chiang Mai golf courses are flattest and easiest to walk between shots?
Gassan Legacy is the flattest course we book, and it is floodlit for cooler evening play. Mae Jo sits in a flat orchard about 20 minutes from the city. Lanna Golf Club is the closest course to the Old City and one of the few that lets you walk, though its cart fee is quoted anywhere from ฿400 to ฿600 depending on the source. Royal Chiang Mai has links-style run-offs on gently rolling ground. Chiang Mai Highlands and Alpine have the most undulating terrain and longest yardages, so we save them for day three when guests have acclimatised.
Is Chiang Mai too hot for golf in March and April?
For older or less-fit golfers, yes. April is the hottest month with average highs around 36C (climate-data.org, accessed 2026-09-28), and March to mid-April is also burning season, when air quality routinely passes AQI 150. In late March 2026 IQAir ranked Chiang Mai among the world's ten most polluted cities. Heat plus smoke is a cardiac and respiratory load we do not recommend for anyone over 60. Book November to February, or June to October mornings, and skip the hot season.
How much water should I drink during a round in Chiang Mai?
We tell guests to finish 500 ml before the first tee and a bottle every three holes after that, roughly two to three litres over 18, more in August humidity of around 80 percent. Do not wait until you feel thirsty. The CDC advises older adults to drink regularly and to ask their doctor about hot-weather fluid intake if on water pills or fluid limits. Every course has drink stands every few holes selling cold water and electrolyte drinks for roughly ฿20 to ฿60, and your caddie will fetch them without being asked.
Does a CMGT Golf package help with heat management?
It helps in three practical ways. We fix first-slot tee times, which is the single biggest heat control. We run a private air-conditioned driver, so you are never standing at a roadside waiting for a Grab at 13:00. And our on-the-ground team can swap a hot-season afternoon round to a floodlit evening or move a round to a flatter course if a guest is struggling. A package does not pay off for a single round; for three or more rounds the tee-time control is the point. Send an enquiry at /golf and we quote within a working day.
