A Christmas golf holiday in Thailand works best in Chiang Mai if you book 8 to 12 weeks out: December brings 15C to 27C days, about 20mm of rain all month, and clear air before the burning season. The catch is demand. The 20 December to 5 January window is the busiest fortnight of the year, so the best morning tee times and hotels go first.
Why choose Chiang Mai for golf over Christmas?
December is cool, dry and clear in Chiang Mai, with roughly 20mm of monthly rain and highs near 27C, ideal for 18 holes.
Most golfers flying in from Europe, the UK or North America over the holidays are escaping single-digit temperatures and short daylight. Chiang Mai gives you the reverse. Rough Guides (accessed 2026-10-06) puts the December day range at 15C to 27C with a monthly average of 20mm of rain. Golfasian, a long-running Thai golf tour operator, calls October to the end of February the cool season and the best time for golf here (Golfasian, accessed 2026-10-06).
The courses ring the valley, so you get mountain backdrops on most rounds. Alpine Golf Resort and Chiang Mai Highlands are at their sharpest in this window, with firm fairways and quick greens once the rains have stopped. Most courses sit roughly 20 to 50 minutes by car from the Old City, so a morning round still leaves the afternoon free for the night markets or a massage. For the full month-by-month picture, see our guide to the best time for golf in Chiang Mai.
Which festive dates are busiest for tee times?
The tightest days are 24 to 26 December and 30 December to 1 January. Mid-December and the first week of January ease noticeably.
Demand stacks in layers. Western holidaymakers arrive from about 20 December. Korean and Japanese golf groups, a big share of Chiang Mai's winter traffic, also fly in over the same weeks. Then on 31 December and 1 January, both Thai public holidays, local members play too. That is three markets chasing the same 07:00 to 08:30 slots.
| Window | Tee-time pressure | Hotel pressure | Our read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-19 Dec | Moderate | Moderate | Best balance of weather and availability |
| 20-23 Dec | High | High | Book weekday mornings early |
| 24-26 Dec | Very high | Very high | Christmas Day itself plays normally in Thailand |
| 27-29 Dec | High | Very high | Good golf days between the two peaks |
| 30 Dec-1 Jan | Very high | Peak | Public holidays, local members play too |
| 2-10 Jan | Moderate to high | Falling | Strong value window, air usually still clear |
If your dates are flexible, the first half of December is the sweet spot. You get the same cool, dry weather, hotels are easier to find, and you can usually choose your tee time rather than take what is left.
How far ahead should I book Christmas golf in Chiang Mai?
Lock flights and hotel first, then tee times, ideally 8 to 12 weeks before arrival. Groups of eight or more should start earlier.
That window is our operator guidance (CMGT Golf, 2026), not a rule published by the courses. Every year is a little different, and lead times depend on the course and the size of your group. A pair can often slot into a gap late. A 12-player society wanting three consecutive tee times on 27 December cannot.
The order matters. Flights into CNX and good hotels near the Old City or Nimman usually tighten before tee times do. Once those are held, send us your dates, group size, handicap range and the courses you want. We check availability for each day, come back with a quote, and a deposit secures the booking. Our booking lead time by season guide breaks this down further, and if you are already inside the window, read our notes on last-minute golf availability in Chiang Mai.
Which courses fill up first over New Year?
Alpine, Highlands and Summit Green Valley fill first. North Hill and the Gassan courses usually hold more festive availability and better value.
The premium trio draws every tour operator in town. Summit Green Valley sits at the top end on price, and Golfasian lists it from around ฿3,900 in high season. Alpine has hosted Asian Tour events and remains the round most visitors ask for first, so its festive mornings go early. Highlands, out in the same Doi Saket direction, pairs mountain views with a well-kept layout and is often booked as the second premium round.
The relief valves are worth knowing. North Hill Golf Club, about 15 minutes from the airport, plays like a private club and is our best-value pick. Gassan Legacy in Lamphun is flat, walkable in character and less contested, roughly 40 to 50 minutes from the Old City. Royal Chiang Mai offers a Peter Thomson links-style test, though conditioning is variable, so set expectations accordingly. Mixing one premium round with two of these is the easiest way to build a full festive week. Tell us your shortlist through our golf holiday page and we will suggest a mix that fits your dates.
Is the weather really reliable at Christmas?
Mostly yes. December rain is rare and light, but early mornings on the higher courses start cool, around 15C, before warming fast.
The honest caveats are small. Early tee times can be misty for the first hour in the valley, and your first few holes may feel chilly if you came off a long-haul flight in shorts. By 10:00 it is usually high 20s and sunny. Afternoon rounds are warm but comfortable, a change from the 35C days of March to May.
What does Christmas golf cost in Chiang Mai?
Expect high-season green fees above the green-season floor of about ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 all-in, plus festive hotel premiums. Confirm exact rates at booking.
High season starts 1 November, and most high-season rack rates are image-only or change without notice, so we do not publish exact festive figures. What we can give you is the floor. Over the Apr to Oct 2026 green season, all-in rounds (green fee, caddie fee and cart) ran ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy and Gassan Panorama, ฿3,400 at Highlands and ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). Christmas rates sit above those.
Add the caddie tip, paid in cash direct to your caddie: ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes is normal, more for excellent service. Every round in Chiang Mai is played with a caddie, and most will read greens, rake bunkers and spot your ball in the rough, so the tip is part of the real cost. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette, and the Chiang Mai golf holiday cost breakdown runs a full trip budget.
Should I book a package or each round myself over the holidays?
For three or more festive rounds, a package usually wins on tee-time security and transfers. For a single round, booking direct is often cheaper.
A package bundles green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and someone on the ground if a tee time moves. Over Christmas that last part earns its keep. Pre-booked private round trips to a course run about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500, and Grab is a gamble for a 06:30 pickup with a golf bag on a public holiday morning.
Be honest with yourself about the maths. If you only want one round at Alpine on 28 December, booking it direct and taking a taxi can cost less. Packages pay off from about three rounds, and most of all for groups. Our direct vs agent booking guide runs the comparison.
Which package suits a Christmas or New Year trip?
Five to seven nights fits most festive trips. Highlands Classic covers four rounds; Lanna Signature adds a fifth with room for rest days.
For a week spanning Christmas, the Lanna Signature, 7 nights and 5 rounds, leaves two clear days for the 25th and the 1st. Shorter breaks suit the Highlands Classic, 5 nights and 4 rounds. If partners want temples and markets as much as golf, the Culture and Golf package balances both. Golfers adding Chiang Mai onto a Bangkok Christmas can use the Layover, 2 nights and 2 rounds. We are enquiry-driven: send dates through our Chiang Mai golf page, we confirm availability and quote, and a deposit secures the booking.
What is there to do on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve?
Christmas Day is a normal Thai working day, so golf runs as usual. New Year's Eve centres on fireworks at Tha Phae Gate and Nimman.
Christmas in Chiang Mai is lights in malls and hotel dinners rather than a shutdown, so you can play in the morning and eat a festive dinner at your hotel. Book that dinner when you book the room, because the popular hotel restaurants fill up too. New Year's Eve is the bigger event. Tha Phae Gate in the Old City hosts the main countdown with concerts and fireworks, and Nimman runs its own street party (Pattaya Mail, accessed 2026-10-06). Roads around the Old City get crowded that night, so plan transport back to your hotel in advance. Our tip: no tee time before 09:00 on 1 January. Your group will thank you.

Is Chiang Mai good for a Christmas golf holiday?
Yes. December is one of the best golf months in northern Thailand. Rough Guides puts the average day at 15C to 27C with about 20mm of rain for the whole month, so washed-out rounds are rare. The burning-season haze usually builds from February, occasionally late January, so the Christmas and New Year window normally sits before it. The trade-off is demand. The last two weeks of December are the busiest of the year, so hotels cost more and the best morning tee times go first. Plan early and the weather does the rest.
How early should I book Christmas and New Year golf in Chiang Mai?
For travel between 20 December and 5 January we suggest locking in hotel and tee times 8 to 12 weeks ahead, and earlier for groups of eight or more (CMGT Golf, 2026). That is operator guidance, not a published course rule, and lead times shift each year. Weekday rounds outside the 24 to 26 December and 30 December to 1 January peaks are easier to place. Flights and hotels usually sell out before tee times do, so sort those first, then send us your dates through /golf for a quote.
Are Chiang Mai golf courses open on Christmas Day and New Year's Day?
In our experience the main courses stay open on 25 December, which is a normal working day in Thailand. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are Thai public holidays, so expect busier tees as local golfers play too, and occasional reduced hours or club events. Opening hours are set by each club and can change, so confirm at booking. We check every course on your itinerary against your exact dates before we send a quote, so you are not booked onto a closed day.
How much more does golf cost in Chiang Mai over Christmas?
Green fees step up from 1 November when high season starts, and hotels add festive premiums on top. As a floor, Apr to Oct 2026 green-season all-in rounds ran from about ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy to ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). High-season rates sit above that, and Golfasian lists Summit Green Valley from around ฿3,900. Most high-season rack rates are not published reliably, so treat any precise figure as confirm at booking. Hotel nights over New Year usually rise more than the golf does.
What should I pack for December golf in Chiang Mai?
Pack for two seasons in one round. Early tee times on the higher courses can start cool, around 15C, then climb to the high 20s by the back nine. A light layer or windproof top for the first hour, a collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers and soft spikes cover it. Denim and non-collared shirts are refused at most clubs. Bring sunscreen and a hat, since December skies are usually clear. Cash in small notes for the caddie tip, ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, is the other essential.
