For most golfers, January is the most reliable month of the year for golf in Chiang Mai: highs around 28C, dawns near 13C, barely any rain and around 9 hours of sunshine a day. The catch is demand. It is peak high season, green fees run at full rate, and morning tee times at the top courses go first, so we advise locking in a January trip 8 to 12 weeks out.
What is the weather like for golf in Chiang Mai in January?
Cool, dry and clear. Expect roughly 13C at dawn, 28C by early afternoon, under 10 mm of rain all month and low humidity.
Weather2Travel's January climate data (accessed 2026-11-02) puts Chiang Mai's average January high at 28C and the low at 13C. Rainfall averages 8 to 9 mm across the whole month, typically falling on only a day or so. Sunshine runs at around 9 hours a day. These are long-run averages, so an individual week can run a degree or two either side.
On the course that means a 7am tee time at Chiang Mai Highlands or Alpine Golf Resort starts in jumper weather. The higher-altitude courses can feel cool for the first few holes, with dew on the fairways and mist sitting in the valleys. By the turn the sun has burned it off and you are in short sleeves. Greens are firm and fast because there is no rain to soften them, and the fairways run out further than they do in the green season, so expect extra roll off the tee and plan your approaches to land short of the flag.
How does January compare with other high-season months?
January is the coolest, most reliable month. December is close behind, February gets warmer, and March brings the worst of the burning-season smoke.
The high season runs from November to March, but those five months are not equal. Our full best time for golf in Chiang Mai breakdown covers the whole year. Here is how January sits against its neighbours.
| Month | Golf conditions | Air quality risk | Crowds and price | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | Warm, drying out after the rains | Low | Busy from mid-month, full rate | Very good, greener fairways |
| December | Cool, dry, clear | Low | Busiest around Christmas and New Year | Excellent, book early |
| January | Coolest and driest of the year | Low early, rising late month | Busy, full rate | Best month, first half ideal |
| February | Warmer afternoons, dry | Moderate to high | Busy, full rate | Good if the AQI is clear |
| March | Hot, hazy | High, peak smoke | Quieter | Avoid if you can |
Will the burning-season haze affect a January round?
Usually not in the first half of January. Smoke can start building in the second half, so check the air quality daily and favour early tee times.
This is the honest downside of January. IQAir describes Thailand's burning season (accessed 2026-11-02) as running January to April and peaking in March. Most Januaries are clear. Some are not. On 11 January 2025, Chiang Mai CityLife reported (accessed 2026-11-02) PM2.5 above the Thai standard at 49 of 79 monitoring points, with a peak of 65 micrograms per cubic metre at Chiang Mai University.
How busy are Chiang Mai golf courses in January?
Busy. Weekend mornings at Highlands and Alpine are usually the first slots to go, and New Year week is the tightest of the whole season.
January pulls in winter-sun golfers from the UK, Europe, Korea and Japan at the same time. The pressure falls on the 6:30am to 8:30am window, because everyone wants to finish before lunch. Midweek is noticeably easier than Saturday and Sunday. Mid-tier courses such as Gassan Legacy and North Hill usually have more room, and a late-morning start at either is a sensible fallback when the early slots are gone. Ask us which courses are offering twilight or evening play in your week, since that changes season to season.
Expect a steadier pace than in the green season. A four-ball at a busy course in January often takes four and a half to five hours. Build that into your day plan, and see our guide to the best tee times for Chiang Mai golf for which slots play fastest.
How early should I book a January golf package?
Aim for 8 to 12 weeks out. Groups of four or more wanting the same course on consecutive mornings should book earlier still.
That is CMGT Golf's working guidance for 2026, not a hard rule. Lead times shift by course and by year, so confirm at booking. The order of what sells out first is fairly reliable, though:
- Weekend morning tee times at Chiang Mai Highlands and Alpine.
- Flights into CNX over New Year week.
- Central hotels within 20 minutes of the courses you plan to play.
Our booking lead time by season guide goes month by month. The process with us is simple: send your dates, group size and the courses you want, we check live availability with each club and send a quote, and a deposit secures the tee times. If you are already inside six weeks, still ask. Weekday slots often remain, and we will tell you straight what we can and cannot get.
What does a January round cost in Chiang Mai?
January is full high-season rate. Budget above green-season prices, plus a caddie fee of roughly ฿300-600 and a cash tip of a few hundred baht per golfer per round.
High-season rack rates change each year and many courses publish them only as images or on request, so we do not quote a precise January green fee here. For a floor, our April to October 2026 green-season all-in rates run from ฿1,950 at Gassan Panorama to ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). January sits above that, and premium courses charge noticeably more at weekends.
On top of the green fee, caddies are mandatory, one per golfer. The caddie fee goes to the course. The tip goes to your caddie, in cash, at the end of the round. Carts are usually extra and often shared between two players. Our caddie culture and tipping guide has the details. For a market reference on bundles, Golfasian lists a 9-day Chiang Mai and Bangkok golf package from ฿35,470 (accessed 2026-11-02). That is a competitor bundle, not our price.
Which courses play best in January?
The higher-altitude, best-conditioned courses shine in January's cool air. Highlands and Alpine are the headline rounds; Royal Chiang Mai and North Hill round out a strong week.
Dry, cool weather favours firm, fast layouts. Chiang Mai Highlands is widely rated among the best-conditioned courses in the region, with 27 holes, heavy bunkering and mountain views that are sharpest on a clear January morning. Alpine is the long test, with big par 5s, water in play and a layout that rewards solid ball-striking. The Royal Chiang Mai Peter Thomson layout plays its best when the run-offs are firm. Conditioning there varies, so ask us how it looked recently.
Mae Jo sits close to the city with mountain views on a clear morning, but in our experience it is the weakest-conditioned of the premium set and play can be slow on weekends. North Hill is a good shorter-drive option for an arrival or departure day. Our best golf courses in Chiang Mai ranking helps you build the right mix for your group's handicaps.
What should I pack for January golf?
Pack a light layer for cool dawns, breathable shirts for 28C afternoons, high-factor sunscreen and an N95 mask for hazy days.
The temperature swing is the thing most first-timers miss. You can start in the low teens and finish near 28C in the same round. A light quarter-zip handles the first hour, then your caddie will hold it. The standard dress code applies: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes, no denim. See our Chiang Mai golf dress code guide for course-by-course quirks.
Is a package worth it for a January trip?
For three or more rounds, yes. In January the real value is secured morning tee times and a driver at 6am, not just the green fee.
Booking direct can be cheaper for a single round, and we will say so. Across a week, though, January exposes the gaps. You need tee times on specific days at full-demand courses, and a private transfer for each 30 to 45 minute drive out. A pre-booked round trip runs about ฿1,400-2,500 a day if you arrange it yourself (CMGT Golf, 2026). Ride-hailing is unreliable at 6am with a full golf bag.
A CMGT Golf package bundles green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support into one quote. Popular January shapes are the Weekend Warrior (3 nights, 3 rounds), Highlands Classic (5 nights, 4 rounds) and the Lanna Signature (7 nights, 5 rounds). Send your dates through our Chiang Mai golf enquiry page and we will come back with a quote. A deposit confirms the tee times.

Is January a good month for golf in Chiang Mai?
Yes. January is one of the coolest and driest months of Chiang Mai's high season. Weather2Travel's climate averages put daytime highs around 28C, dawn lows near 13C, under 10 mm of rain across the whole month and about 9 hours of sunshine a day. That makes 18 holes comfortable from the first tee time to the last. The trade-offs are price and access: January sits inside the November to March high season, so green fees are at full rate and the best morning slots at Highlands and Alpine fill first. Later in the month, watch the air quality too, because the burning season can begin to build in the second half of January.
How far ahead should I book a January golf trip to Chiang Mai?
Our working rule at CMGT Golf is 8 to 12 weeks ahead for a January trip, and earlier if you are a group of four or more who want consecutive morning tee times at the same course. Weekend mornings at Chiang Mai Highlands and Alpine Golf Resort are usually the first slots to go. Flights and central hotels also tighten over the New Year week. Lead times vary course by course and year to year, so treat this as guidance and confirm at booking. If you are already inside six weeks, enquire anyway: weekday tee times often still open up, and we will tell you honestly what is still available.
Is the air quality bad in Chiang Mai in January?
Early January is usually fine. The haze problem is the burning season, which IQAir describes as running January to April and peaking in March. In some years the smoke arrives early: on 11 January 2025, Chiang Mai CityLife reported PM2.5 above the Thai standard at 49 of 79 monitoring points, with a high of 65 micrograms per cubic metre. So the first half of January is the safer window. Check IQAir or aqicn each morning, pack an N95 for the drive out, and if a reading is high, move your round to an earlier tee time when the air is often clearer.
What should I wear for January golf in Chiang Mai?
Layer up for the dawn and dress down for the back nine. Early tee times at higher-altitude courses can start in the low to mid teens Celsius, so a light quarter-zip or vest over a collared shirt is sensible for the first hour. By late morning it is close to 28C in strong sun, so you will want breathable fabric, a hat and sunscreen. The standard dress code still applies: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes. No denim, no sports shorts, no sandals. Caddies will happily hold your outer layer once you warm up.
Do I need a package for January golf in Chiang Mai, or can I book direct?
For one round, booking direct is often the cheaper option and we will say so. For three or more rounds in January, a package makes more sense, because the hard part is not the green fee but securing morning tee times on the days you want, plus a private driver at 6am on every one of them. A package bundles green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, airport transfers and on-the-ground support into one quote. CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven: tell us your dates and group size, we send a quote, and a deposit confirms the tee times.
