Golf Holiday With Bad Knees in Thailand: Chiang Mai

Planning a golf holiday with bad knees in Thailand? Which Chiang Mai courses suit sore joints, how carts and caddies help, and how to pace rounds without pain.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team09 Oct 20269 min read

Chiang Mai is one of the easier places in Asia to golf with bad knees, a sore hip or a weak back: carts are standard, every golfer gets a caddie for about ฿300-400, and flatter courses sit 10-45 minutes from the city. What matters most is how you pace the trip. Pick gentle layouts, tee off before 7:30am and rest between rounds.

Why is Thai golf easier on bad knees than golf at home?

In Thailand a caddie carries your bag, drives the cart, cleans your clubs and reads greens, so most of the lifting and walking is gone.

At home, a sore knee usually suffers from the extras, not the swing: hauling the bag out of the car, pushing a trolley up hills, bending for tees and balls, walking 7 or 8 km. In northern Thailand almost all of that goes to your caddie. One regional operator notes that caddies are mandatory for every player at courses in northern Thailand, and carts are mandatory at most of them (Olsen Golf Tours, accessed 2026-10-09).

Most caddies are women and they work hard. Ask and they will tee your ball up, pick it out of the cup, fix your pitch marks and hand you the right club, so you bend far less. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette. In short, the caddie fee paid to the course runs ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses, and you tip your caddie ฿400-600 in cash after 18 holes (CMGT Golf, 2026).

Which Chiang Mai courses are kindest to knees, hips and backs?

For gentle golf, pick Gassan Legacy or Lanna Golf Club. Book the mountain courses for days when your body feels strong, not your first round.

Three things decide how hard a course is on your joints: the slope between the cart path and your ball, how long the round takes, and how long the drive to the course is. Here is how the courses we book most often compare on those three. When you enquire through our Chiang Mai golf holidays page, we match the shortlist to what hurts.

Gassan Legacy is the course we steer most mobility-limited golfers toward. It plays shorter and flatter than its sister course Gassan Panorama, which is a long championship test better suited to strong legs. Lanna Golf Club is the shortest drive from the Old City, so you spend less time folded into a car seat before you tee off. North Hill is about 15 minutes from the airport, which suits an arrival afternoon when you are stiff from the flight and want a short loosen-up rather than a big day.

What is the honest downside for golfers with bad knees?

Carts do not always reach your ball. Mountain courses, cart-path-only days and slow rounds can still mean slopes, steps and long sits.

We will not pretend a cart solves everything. After heavy rain, which is common in September and October, many courses keep carts on the paths, and some run a 90-degree rule all the time. On a hilly hole that can mean a walk of 30-60 metres down a bank and back up for each shot. Steep-faced bunkers are hard on a bad knee, so take a drop and move on. Nobody in your group will mind.

Long rounds are the second problem. Mae Jo is one of the closer resort courses to the city, but its pace is slow, and a 5-hour round with lots of sitting in the cart is hard on lower backs. Gassan Khuntan looks spectacular, but the drive is 45 minutes or more each way on top of the round, and the terrain is the hilliest we book.

How do I pace a Chiang Mai golf trip around an injury?

Play one round every one and a half to two days, never three days running, and put a rest or massage afternoon after every round.

A sensible pattern is 4 or 5 rounds across 7 nights, which is how our Lanna Signature 7-night package is built. If you have less time, the Northern Value 4-night package fits 3 rounds into 4 nights, with room for a rest day. For golfers who want gentler days off the course, Culture & Golf puts 3 rounds between temple and Old City days, most of which can be done at an easy pace by car.

Do not play on arrival day after a long-haul flight unless your back copes well with long sits. Book a Thai or sports massage the afternoon after each round. Our golf and Thai massage recovery guide explains which kinds of massage help and which to avoid on an injured joint. Warm up on the range for 10 minutes before you tee off, and drink more water than you think you need, because dehydration makes stiff joints worse.

When is the best time of year to golf with joint problems?

November to February is best: cool early mornings and dry ground, so carts are more likely to be allowed off the path.

The cool, dry season is the easiest time for anyone with stiff joints. It is also the busiest and most expensive time, so book early. March to May brings heat that often passes 35C by midday. From June to October the rain makes ground soft, which is gentler underfoot but leads to more cart-path-only days.

There is also a health issue beyond your joints. Burning season runs from about mid-January to mid-April and usually peaks in March, when smoke can push air quality into unhealthy levels for days at a time. Check daily readings on IQAir's Chiang Mai page (accessed 2026-10-09) before you commit to a March round. Our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide breaks the year down month by month.

Does night golf help if heat makes my joints worse?

Yes. Gassan Legacy, Summit Green Valley and Star Dome have floodlights, so you can play in cooler evening air, and Gassan Legacy is ฿300 cheaper at night.

If your joints swell in the heat, or your medication makes you sensitive to sun, an evening round can turn a hard day into an easy one. Gassan Legacy costs ฿1,650 at night against ฿1,950 by day (CMGT Golf, 2026). Summit Green Valley is also floodlit, but there is water on nearly every hole, so ask us about current green condition before you book. Star Dome is a short floodlit layout in the city, ideal for a gentle loosen-up night. For more ideas, see beating the heat on Chiang Mai courses.

Should I bring my own clubs or rent?

Bring a light stand or carry bag, or rent. The caddie handles the bag on the course, but you, the driver and the hotel porter still move it around.

With a knee or back problem, the worst part of bringing clubs is usually the airport, not the course. Every course has rental sets, but prices vary and are not well published, so expect roughly ฿1,000-1,500 per set and confirm at booking. If you bring your own, choose a lighter bag and a hard case with wheels. On a package, your private driver loads and unloads the bags at every stop, which means you never lift a bag into a Grab boot at 6am.

Is a package worth it if mobility is my main concern?

For two or more rounds, usually yes. A package takes care of transfers, bag handling and tee-time timing, which are the parts that hurt.

A private round trip to a course costs about ฿1,400-2,500 if you book it yourself (CMGT Golf, 2026), and a Grab is a gamble for early tee times and large bags. Market packages such as Golfasian's Chiang Mai week (accessed 2026-10-09) include caddies plus airport and course transfers, and ours do too. To be honest, if you only want one round, booking direct and taking a taxi is often cheaper. Our direct vs agent booking breakdown runs the numbers both ways.

We are enquiry-driven. Tell us your dates, how many rounds your body can manage and what hurts, and we send a quote that matches the courses to your joints. Frequently asked questions

Is Chiang Mai a good golf destination if I have bad knees?

Yes, for most golfers who can still swing a club. Thai golf takes away most of the walking and lifting that hurts knees at home. Carts are standard at most northern Thailand courses, and every golfer gets a caddie who drives, carries the bag, cleans clubs and reads greens. The caddie fee is around ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses (CMGT Golf, 2026). What you still need to manage is the slope between the cart path and your ball, how long the round runs, the heat, and long transfers. Pick a flatter course, tee off early and leave a rest day between rounds.

Can I drive the golf cart onto the fairway in Chiang Mai?

It depends on the course and the day. Some courses allow carts on fairways in dry conditions. Others keep carts on paths after rain or run a 90-degree rule, where you leave the path at right angles level with your ball. We have not found a published medical exemption policy at any Chiang Mai course, so do not assume one exists. If you have a knee, hip or back issue, tell us when you enquire. We raise it with the course before you arrive and steer you toward layouts where the walk from path to ball stays short.

Which Chiang Mai golf course is easiest on the joints?

Gassan Legacy Golf Club is the gentlest choice we book. It is the flattest and easiest of the three Gassan courses, sits 30-45 minutes away in Lamphun, and costs ฿1,950 all-in by day or ฿1,650 under floodlights in the 2026 green season (CMGT Golf, 2026). Night golf there means cooler air, which many golfers with joint issues find easier. Lanna Golf Club is the other short-transfer option, around 10 minutes from the Old City. Leave mountain courses such as Gassan Khuntan for a day when your body feels strong.

How many rounds should I plan on a Chiang Mai trip with an injury?

Plan one round for every one and a half to two days on the ground, and never three days in a row. A 7-night trip with 4 or 5 rounds gives you rest days between each pair of rounds. A 4-night trip with 3 rounds works if you rest on day one. Rounds in Thailand often run longer than at home. A slow course like Mae Jo can mean 5 hours with long stretches sitting in a cart, which stiffens backs. Book a massage or spa afternoon after each round, and be ready to skip a fourth round if your knee says no.

Is a golf package worth it if I can only play a few rounds?

For two or more rounds plus hotel and transfers, usually yes, because the package removes the logistics that hurt most: lifting bags in and out of taxis, waiting in the heat for a ride, and hunting for a driver at 6am. A private round trip to a course costs around ฿1,400-2,500 if you book it alone (CMGT Golf, 2026). For a single round, booking the course direct and taking a taxi is often cheaper, and we will tell you that. Send us your dates and mobility needs on our golf page and we will quote both ways.
