Golf Trip Planning Checklist for Chiang Mai, Thailand

A Chiang Mai golf trip needs ten checks, in this order: season, entry paperwork, flights, clubs, courses, round count, budget, packing, caddie cash and a confirmed booking. Start about 12 weeks out for a November to February trip. Since 15 September 2026, most Western visitors get 30 visa-free days, so plan the trip to fit inside that limit.

This checklist is the order we work through with every group that enquires at CMGT Golf. Tick each item off and the last step is a confirmed package with tee times, caddies and drivers already arranged.

When should you start planning a Chiang Mai golf trip?

Start 12 weeks out for November to February trips and 4 to 6 weeks out for green season, when tee sheets stay open.

High-season rates generally apply from November through March. Weekend tee times at Alpine Golf Resort and Chiang Mai Highlands go first, and groups of four or more need a block of tee times together. Green season (roughly April to October) is easier. Some courses, like North Hill, can often be booked a day or two ahead.

Which month should you book for golf in Chiang Mai?

Pick November to February for cool, dry golf, or April to October for the best value. Avoid March, the peak of burning season.

From November to February, early tee times are cool and fresh, and afternoons are warm rather than hot. December and January are usually the coolest months. That weather costs more, and the courses are at their busiest. June to October brings short afternoon storms, usually heaviest late in the season. Mornings generally stay playable, and rates are at their lowest.

The honest downside is air quality. Burning season runs roughly from late January into April and usually peaks in March, when smoke from agricultural fires settles in the valley. What entry paperwork does a golfer need in 2026?

Since 15 September 2026, most Western passports get 30 visa-free days, not 60. Every visitor also files a free TDAC within 72 hours of arrival.

The 30-day limit covers US, UK, Canadian and Australian passports, and the exemption is for tourism only (Dejudom Law, accessed 2026-09-27). A 30-day extension is possible inside Thailand, subject to approval. That matters if you planned a long winter golf stay. For a normal one or two week golf holiday, it changes nothing.

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free on the official Immigration Bureau portal (accessed 2026-09-27). File it within 72 hours before landing and save the QR code on your phone. Ignore paid lookalike sites that charge a "processing fee". Check your passport has at least six months of validity left, and confirm the current rules for your nationality before you buy flights, because entry policy can change at short notice.

How do you get from flights to your first tee?

Fly into Chiang Mai International (CNX), a short drive from the Old City. Book a private driver for golf days, because ride-hail cars struggle with golf bags.

A metered or airport taxi to the Old City is cheap and quick, usually well under ฿300 and 15 minutes or so outside rush hour. Getting to the courses is the harder part. Most sit 30 to 45 minutes out around the valley. A pre-booked private round trip to one course runs about ฿1,400-2,500 depending on distance and vehicle size (CMGT Golf, 2026). Should you bring your own clubs or rent?

Bring your own set for four or more rounds. Rent for one or two, but confirm the rental set and price with the course first.

Every course we book has rental clubs, but quality and price vary by course. Expect roughly ฿1,000-1,500 per set, and treat that as a range to confirm at booking, not a fixed rate. Plan on one set per golfer, because sharing a bag between two players slows play and most courses discourage it. Check your airline's sports-equipment fee before you decide. On a long-haul ticket with no free bag allowance, it often decides the maths for you. If you do fly with clubs, a hard case and a stiff arm protect the driver shaft.

Which courses belong on your shortlist?

Shortlist three to five courses that mix one showpiece, one value round and one close to your hotel. Transfer time matters more than you think.

How many rounds should you plan?

Plan one round per day with a rest day after every two or three rounds. Four rounds in five nights suits most golfers.

A 6:30 pickup, 8:00 tee-off and early afternoon finish is a normal peak-season day. In green season, heat and afternoon storms push the best window to 7:00-8:00. What should you budget per round?

Budget roughly ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 per round all-in during green season, plus a ฿400 to ฿600 caddie tip and transfer costs.

Peak-season green fees are higher, and most courses don't publish their high-season rack rates clearly. What goes in the golf bag and suitcase?

Pack collared shirts, tailored shorts, soft spikes, sunscreen, rain gear and Thai baht in small notes. No denim, sandals or collarless shirts.

Courses enforce the dress code at the clubhouse. Pack two shirts per round in green season, because you will sweat through one. A light rain jacket and a spare glove handle the afternoon storms, and a wide-brim hat or cap is worth more than extra balls. You don't usually need an official handicap certificate. How do caddies and tipping work?

Almost every course requires one caddie per golfer. The caddie fee goes to the course; a separate cash tip goes to your caddie.

Caddies carry or manage your bag, read greens, clean clubs, spot balls and keep score. You can't usually opt out, and a good one saves you shots. Tip roughly ฿400-600 per 18 holes, and more for excellent service. Pay in cash at the bag drop after the round, directly to your caddie.
