For most golfers, four or five rounds is the right number for a Chiang Mai golf week, with at least one rest day for every three rounds. Five rounds across seven nights is the rhythm we book most often (CMGT Golf, 2026). Keen players can stretch to six in the cool season. In the hot months, plan on four at most.
How many rounds does a typical Chiang Mai golf week include?
Five rounds in seven nights is our most booked rhythm. That leaves an arrival day, two rest days and a departure day without rushing anything.
A Chiang Mai "round" is really a full day out. Most valley courses sit 15 to 40 minutes from the Old City, and the three Gassan courses in Lamphun take closer to an hour (CMGT Golf course directory, 2026). Add a 6:30am pickup, a range warm-up, about 4.5 to 5 hours on the course with a caddie and cart, lunch at the clubhouse and the drive back. Each golf day ends up being six to seven hours door to door.
Five of those days in a week is plenty of golf without leaving you worn out. It is also why our Lanna Signature 7-night package is built around five rounds, not seven.
| Trip length | Rounds we recommend | Rest days | Best fit | Matching CMGT package |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 nights | 2 | 0 | Stopover, business trip add-on | Layover (2 rounds) |
| 3 nights | 3 | 0 | Long weekend, fit regular golfers | Weekend Warrior (3 rounds) |
| 4 nights | 3 | 1 | First trip, mixed-ability groups | Northern Value (3 rounds) |
| 5 nights | 3-4 | 1-2 | Golf plus temples and food | Culture & Golf (3) or Highlands Classic (4) |
| 7 nights | 5 | 2 | Dedicated golf week | Lanna Signature (5 rounds) |
Is it realistic to play golf every day for a week?
Physically yes, but most guests who book seven straight rounds start dropping them by day four. Tired legs and the heat cost more than a missed tee time.
We see the same pattern every season. The first two rounds go well, the third is fine, and by the fourth morning someone in the group is asking to skip. A dropped round is often still a paid round, since green fees, caddie and cart bookings are usually committed by then.
The honest downside of a heavy schedule is the early starts. Cool-season tee times start from about 6:30am, which means a 5:30am alarm at a city hotel. Do that seven days in a row and the week feels like work. If you want to play every day, mix in a shorter day, such as an evening nine at the floodlit Star Dome Golf Club, a nine-hole course about 10 minutes from the city near the airport.
How does the season change the right number of rounds?
Cool season supports five or six rounds a week. The hot, hazy months support three or four. The green season sits at four or five, played early.
The weather in Chiang Mai swings a lot for a tropical city. December and January bring average lows around 15C and highs around 28C, while March to May highs average about 36C and can pass 40C, according to Climates to Travel (accessed 2026-09-24). A round at 28C and a round at 36C are very different on the body.
| Months | Conditions | Rounds per week | Tee time advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov-Feb | Cool, dry, clear | 5-6 | Any morning slot, book well ahead |
| Mar-mid Apr | Hot, burning-season haze | 3-4 | First tee time, keep one round flexible |
| Late Apr-May | Very hot, first storms | 3-4 | Before 8am |
| Jun-Oct | Humid, afternoon storms | 4-5 | Early morning, finish before the rain |

How does the burning season affect a golf week?
From roughly February to mid-April, and usually worst in March, smoke can make a round unwise. Book fewer rounds and keep one day flexible.
This is the trade-off we never hide. On bad days the air quality index in Chiang Mai can climb well into the unhealthy range, and in peak weeks the city regularly features among the most polluted in the world. Conditions vary sharply from one day to the next, so check the live reading on IQAir's Chiang Mai page (accessed 2026-09-24) each morning before you tee off.
Can I fit 36 holes into one day?
Yes, in the cool season, at a 27-hole course. Do it once in the week at most, and never in the heat.
A 36-hole day takes nine to ten hours on site with a caddie and cart (CMGT Golf, 2026). The 27-hole layouts at Alpine Golf Resort and Chiang Mai Highlands let you play a fresh nine-hole combination in the afternoon without another transfer. The Gassan courses in Lamphun can be paired too, but the extra drive between clubs makes it a very long day.
The easier option for keen players is a floodlit evening round. Gassan Legacy runs night golf with an all-in rate in the region of ฿1,500 to ฿1,800, and Summit Green Valley in Mae Rim is also floodlit. Lit hours and rates change by season, so we confirm them when we quote. Cooler evening air and a separate booking make this far kinder than a straight 36.
Which courses should I spread across a five-round week?
Mix two big resort rounds, two easier rounds and one character round. Don't stack the hardest layouts on back-to-back days.
Long, demanding courses take more out of you. Gassan Panorama stretches to 7,761 yards with a 666-yard par-6, and Alpine plays to over 7,200 yards through a forested valley (CMGT Golf course directory, 2026). Put a shorter, gentler round between them.
A balanced five-round week we often build:
- Round 1: North Hill Golf Club in Hang Dong, about 15 minutes from the city and a shorter layout, a good first-day swing check.
- Round 2: Chiang Mai Highlands, a Schmidt-Curley design in Mae On known for its condition.
- Rest day: spa, Doi Suthep, Old City.
- Round 3: Royal Chiang Mai, a Peter Thomson design in San Sai.
- Round 4: Gassan Legacy in Lamphun, a longer transfer, so a later breakfast and an evening back in town.
- Rest day.
- Round 5: Alpine, 27 holes in San Kamphaeng and a strong finale.

How much recovery time do golfers actually need?
One rest day for every three rounds is our rule of thumb. Golfers over 60, or anyone travelling in the hot months, often feel better with one for every two.
Walking isn't the issue, since carts and caddies are standard at nearly every course. The real drain is heat, early starts and the drive to and from the course. Rest days also let you use the city: a Thai massage costs far less than at home, and a morning at the temples adds variety to the week.
Plan caddie tips across all your rounds too. The expected tip is ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, in cash, on top of the caddie fee. Five rounds means ฿2,000 to ฿3,000 in tips alone. Our caddie culture and tipping guide explains the etiquette.
What does each extra round add to the cost of the week?
Each round adds a green fee, a caddie fee, a cart and a tip, so a mid-range round lands at roughly ฿3,500 to ฿5,000 per player before transport.
Published green fees at the main Chiang Mai courses start from about ฿1,800 at value courses like North Hill and rise to about ฿3,200 to ₿3,400 at Alpine and Chiang Mai Highlands. Caddie fees sit around ฿400 to ฿500 and carts around ฿600 to ฿800 (CMGT Golf course directory, 2026). Rates move with the season and weekday versus weekend, so treat these as starting points, not quotes.
That is why the fifth or sixth round is worth thinking about. If you are likely to skip it, leave it out of the booking.
Does the number of rounds change whether a package pays off?
Packages start paying off at three rounds. For one or two rounds, booking direct can cost the same or less.
Other operators, such as Golfasian (accessed 2026-09-24), also publish Chiang Mai golf weeks that bundle hotel, transfers, tee times and caddie fees. The logic holds whoever you book with: more rounds means more transfers, more tee times and more swaps if the weather turns, and that is the work a package takes off your hands.
If you are weighing it up, our breakdown of package versus pay-as-you-go golf runs the numbers round by round. When you know your number, send it through our Chiang Mai golf enquiry page and we will quote a week built around it, including green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver and airport transfers.

How many rounds of golf should I play in a week in Chiang Mai?
Five rounds across seven nights is the rhythm we book most often. It leaves an arrival day, two rest or sightseeing days and a departure day, and it spreads the long transfers out. Keen golfers who walk off 18 holes feeling fresh can push to six in the cool season (November to February). First-time visitors, couples with a non-golfing partner and anyone travelling in the hot months should plan on four. Seven rounds in seven days is possible, but most guests who try it are tired by the fourth day, and their scores show it.
Can I play 36 holes in one day in Chiang Mai?
Yes, but plan it only in the cool season and only at a 27-hole course such as Alpine or Chiang Mai Highlands, where you can play a fresh nine-hole combination in the afternoon without another transfer. A 36-hole day with a caddie and cart takes roughly nine to ten hours on site. From March to May the afternoon heat regularly passes 35C, which makes a second round in the afternoon a poor idea. If you want extra golf, a floodlit evening round is easier on the body than a full second 18.
Should I plan rest days on a Chiang Mai golf trip?
Plan at least one rest day for every three rounds. Chiang Mai courses sit in a ring around the valley, so each round is really a six to seven hour day once you add the pickup, warm-up, lunch and the drive back. A rest day in the middle of the week lets you book a spa, visit Doi Suthep or the Old City temples, and sleep past 5:30am. Guests who skip rest days usually drop a round later in the week anyway, which wastes a paid tee time.
Does the season change how many rounds I should book?
Yes. November to February is cool and dry, with morning lows around 15C, so five or six rounds a week is comfortable. March to April overlaps the burning season, when haze can make outdoor exercise unwise on the worst days, so plan three or four rounds and keep one flexible. June to October is the green season: mornings are usually playable and prices are lowest, but afternoon storms can stop play, so book early tee times and plan four or five rounds.
Is a package better value if I only play two or three rounds?
Not always. For one or two rounds, booking a course direct and taking a taxi can cost about the same as a package or less. A package starts to pay off once you play three or more rounds, because the private driver, the tee-time juggling and the hotel logistics add up. CMGT Golf packages run from 2 rounds (Layover) to 5 rounds (Lanna Signature), and we send a tailored quote after an enquiry rather than taking an instant booking.
