Long-stay golf holiday in Chiang Mai: green-season math

Planning weeks of golf in Chiang Mai? Green-season value, a multi-course rotation, monthly cost and rest cadence, and how a 7-night base extends.

A long-stay golf holiday in Chiang Mai works best in the green season, April to October, where all-in green fees drop to roughly ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 and a 7-night, 5-round package base costs about ฿28,100 per person twin-share. Plan three or four rounds a week across four or five courses, not daily golf, and budget by the round.

Chiang Mai suits the long-stay golfer better than almost anywhere in Thailand: a dozen courses inside a 45-minute ring, green-season rates that reward weeks rather than days, and a city cheap enough to base in for a month. This guide covers the value math, the course rotation, how many rounds a week your body will actually take, and how a package base extends. For the full picture of the destination, start with our golf in Chiang Mai pillar guide.

When should a long-stay golfer come to Chiang Mai?

Come in the green season, April 1 to October 31, for the cheapest rates and easy short-notice tee times. Come November to February only if clear, cool air is worth peak pricing.

The two seasons drive everything. High season (Nov 1 to Mar 31) is cool, dry and dearest, with the hardest tee times to book. The green or low season (Apr 1 to Oct 31) is rainy, lush and cheapest, and you can usually book a course a day or two ahead. For a stay measured in weeks, the green season is the obvious choice: mornings are typically dry and playable, and the savings compound over every round.

The honest trade-off is weather. Afternoon storms are common and heaviest in September and October, so you tee off early and you accept the odd washout. If your calendar forces a spring stay, read the burning-season warning further down before you commit. For a deeper seasonal breakdown see our green season 2026 notes.

What does a month of golf in Chiang Mai cost?

Budget by the round. Sixteen green-season rounds a month at a ฿2,800 blended all-in, plus ฿400 to ฿600 caddie tips, is roughly ฿54,000 in golf alone, before hotel and food.

Do not think in a single monthly figure, because your cost swings entirely on which courses you play and how often. A month of four rounds a week is about 16 to 17 rounds. At the value end (the Gassan courses near ฿1,950 all-in) that is close to ฿33,000 of green fees. Weight it toward Alpine and Highlands and the same month passes ฿60,000. The caddie tip is a real line item too: it is separate from the caddie fee, expected, and runs ฿400 to ฿600 per 18, handed over in cash after the round.

Accommodation is where a long stay pulls ahead of a short one. A monthly serviced apartment in the city costs a fraction per night of a resort room, so the marginal cost of week three is mostly just golf. For a fuller cost breakdown see our Chiang Mai golf holiday cost guide.

Which courses suit a multi-week rotation?

Mix tiers so you are not paying premium every day. Build a four or five course loop: the Gassan value cluster, plus Alpine and Highlands once or twice a week, plus a close-to-city course for quick rounds.

Playing one course daily gets stale by week two. The smarter long-stay shape rotates value courses through the week and saves the premium tracks for a treat. The value core is the Gassan cluster in Lamphun, Gassan Legacy at about ฿1,950 all-in (฿1,650 for a floodlit night round) and Gassan Panorama, one of Thailand's longest layouts, also near ฿1,950. Add Chiangmai Inthanon around ฿2,400 all-in, then rotate in Alpine and Highlands for the best conditioning in the region.

Source: CMGT Golf green-season agent all-in rates, 2026. North Hill low-season figure is an estimate; confirm at booking. All-in includes green fee, caddie fee and cart.

The honest downsides to price in: Inthanon reviews note a decline in conditioning, Mae Jo has the weakest conditioning and slowest pace of the premium-adjacent set, and North Hill's exact rates and yardage are unverified, so treat the number above as an estimate to confirm. See our best value golf course comparison for the full value ranking.

How many rounds a week can I actually play?

Three or four, not daily. Green-season heat, humidity and a 5-hour pace at busy courses wear down most golfers over 55. Build in a rest day between back-to-back rounds.

This is the mistake long-stay first-timers make: they book daily golf for a month, then burn out in week two with a sore back and no interest in a tee time. Four rounds a week over three weeks is 12 rounds, plenty to rotate every course near the city and still keep the trip enjoyable. Pace of play is a real factor: a Saturday morning at Mae Jo can run five hours with the course full of local members, and that is a long time in green-season humidity.

For the round-to-round planning detail, our 7-day golf itinerary shows a workable single-week template you can repeat.

Should I base on a 7-night package and extend?

Yes. A 7-night, 5-round package fixes your hotel, private transfers, tee times and caddie fees, then you add rounds week by week once you know which courses you like.

The clean long-stay structure is a package base plus flexible add-on rounds. The package handles the logistics that are tedious to arrange yourself for a long stay: airport pickup, private air-conditioned transfers to courses that ring the valley 30 to 45 minutes out, tee-time coordination and caddie fees folded into one price. Our Lanna Signature 7-night package is built as exactly this kind of base; the Highlands Classic 5-night and Northern Value 4-night work as shorter starting points you extend.

CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven. We send a quote and confirm on a deposit, so there is no instant-book button; that is deliberate, because a long stay needs a real itinerary, not a checkout. Tell us your dates, round count and course preferences at our golf enquiry page and we build the number around your actual plan. For how the bundles are put together, see Chiang Mai golf packages explained.

The honest caveat: a package does not pay off for every round. If you only want the occasional cheap round with no transfers, direct-booking a value course like Gassan Legacy beats any bundle for that single day. The package math wins when you are playing several rounds a week and want the transfers and tee times handled.

How do transfers and booking work on a long stay?

Send your dates and rough round count, we quote, you confirm on a deposit, then we lock the base and you add rounds week by week. Transfers to the courses ringing the valley run 30 to 45 minutes each way.

Most Chiang Mai courses sit 30 to 45 minutes out from the city, in the ring of foothills around the valley, so a self-drive or daily taxi juggle gets old fast over a month. On a package base we handle the airport pickup and private air-conditioned transfers to each course, and coordinate tee times so you are not on the phone every evening. In the green season you can usually add a round a day or two ahead, so the flexible part of a long stay stays genuinely flexible. Booking runs in plain steps: send your dates and preferred courses at our golf enquiry page, we send a written quote, you confirm with a deposit, and we lock the hotel, transfers and first week of tee times. Add-on rounds get booked as you go once you have a feel for which courses you want to repeat.

What about the burning season on a spring long stay?

Plan around it. Burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and peaks in March, when air quality routinely turns hazardous. A long stay running into spring carries real health risk on the worst days.

This is the one downside you cannot design away with an early tee time. In the March peak Chiang Mai's PM2.5 routinely climbs into the hazardous range, above 300 on the worst spring days, and the city ranks among the most polluted in the world (IQAir, accessed 2026-09-04). For a snowbird whose home-winter window is January to April, that overlaps the worst of it.

Is Chiang Mai the right base for weeks of golf?

For value, course density and a livable long-stay city, yes. If you want a bigger-name course roster or guaranteed clean spring air, weigh the alternatives first.

Chiang Mai gives you the most courses per baht of anywhere in northern Thailand and a city cheap enough to settle into for a month. What it does not give you is the volume of championship venues that Bangkok or the coast offer, and it carries the spring air-quality problem. If you are choosing your long-stay base, our Chiang Mai vs Bangkok golf comparison lays out the trade. For a shorter trial before you commit to weeks, a weekend golf getaway in Chiang Mai is the low-risk way to test the courses first.

Send your dates through and we quote the real long-stay number, then plan your rotation around the courses you want to repeat.

Frequently asked questions

When is the cheapest time for a long-stay golf holiday in Chiang Mai?

The green season, April 1 to October 31, is the value window. Agent all-in rates fall to roughly ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy and ฿2,400 at Inthanon, and a 7-night, 5-round package base runs about ฿28,100 per person twin-share versus ฿33,760 in high season (Golfsavers, accessed 2026-09-04). Mornings are usually dry and playable. The trade-off is afternoon storms, heaviest in September and October, so book early tee times. If you want cool, clear, dust-free air you pay peak-season money from November to February.

How many rounds a week can I play on a long stay?

Most long-stay golfers we book settle at three or four rounds a week, not daily golf. In green-season heat and humidity a body over 55 needs a rest day between back-to-back rounds, and a 5-hour pace of play is normal at busier courses like Mae Jo. Four rounds a week over three weeks is 12 rounds, enough to rotate every premium course near the city and still have days for temples, massage or just the hotel pool. Daily golf sounds good on paper and wrecks most people by week two.

What does a month of golf in Chiang Mai actually cost?

Budget by the round, not the month. Green-season all-in green fees run about ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 depending on course tier, plus a ฿400 to ฿600 caddie tip each round. Sixteen rounds a month at a ฿2,800 blended all-in plus tips is roughly ฿54,000 in golf alone, before hotel and food. A monthly serviced apartment in the city runs far less per night than a resort. Send us your dates and round count at /golf and we quote the real number rather than a rack-rate guess.

Should I base on a 7-night package and extend it?

Yes, that is the common long-stay shape. A 7-night, 5-round package sets your hotel, private transfers, tee times and caddie fees, then you add rounds week by week once you know which courses you like. Our Lanna Signature 7-night is built as that base. CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven, so we send a quote and confirm on deposit rather than instant-booking. The honest caveat: if you only want the odd cheap round and no transfers, direct booking a value course can beat any package for that single round.

Which Chiang Mai courses suit a long, repeated rotation?

Mix tiers so you are not paying premium rates every day. The value core is the Gassan cluster in Lamphun, Gassan Legacy at about ฿1,950 all-in and Gassan Panorama at ฿1,950, plus Inthanon near ฿2,400. Rotate in Alpine and Highlands at ฿3,400 to ฿3,700 once or twice a week for the better conditioning. North Hill near the airport is the closest for a quick round. Playing the same course daily gets stale fast, so a four or five course loop keeps a multi-week trip interesting.

Is the air really bad during a long stay in spring?

Yes, and you should plan around it. Burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and peaks in March. In that window Chiang Mai's PM2.5 routinely climbs into the hazardous range, above 300 on the worst days, and the city ranks among the world's most polluted (IQAir, accessed 2026-09-04). A long stay that runs into March means real health risk on the worst days. Check IQAir daily, carry an N95, and be ready to skip a round. If your snowbird window is spring, consider basing green-season instead or shifting south when the haze spikes.
