Thai Airways Golf Bag Rules on Domestic Thailand Flights

Thai Airways golf bag rules on the domestic Bangkok to Chiang Mai leg in 2026: allowances, through-checking, budget airline fees, and when renting clubs wins.

On Thai Airways, your golf bag flies Bangkok to Chiang Mai inside the normal domestic allowance (one piece, 23 kg in economy under the 2026 rules), and it costs nothing extra if it is through-checked on one ticket. The fees start when you split tickets, check a second bag, or switch to a budget carrier at Don Mueang.

Does Thai Airways charge for a golf bag on the domestic leg?

Usually not. Thai Airways counts golf equipment inside your one checked piece, 23 kg in economy or 32 kg in Royal Silk, on domestic flights.

Thai Airways moved to a piece concept for travel in 2026. On flights within Thailand, every passenger gets one checked bag: 23 kg in economy and 32 kg in Royal Silk business, according to Executive Traveller's summary of the new rules (accessed 2026-10-27).

Your golf bag can be that one piece. If you also check a suitcase, one of the two becomes excess. Thai Airways states on its sport and special baggage terms page (accessed 2026-10-27) that its flat sport rate does not apply to a purely domestic checked portion within Thailand. Excess on that leg is charged from the domestic table in baht, so get the number on your booking before you reach the airport.

Fare rules change more often than golf bags do. If your ticket was issued before the piece concept took effect, the older weight rules on that ticket may still apply. Check the baggage line on your e-ticket receipt, not a forum post from three years ago.

Should I through-check my clubs from home to Chiang Mai?

Yes, whenever you can. One ticket to CNX means one allowance, one bag tag, and no second airline deciding your golf bag is excess.

When your long-haul flight and the domestic hop sit on the same ticket, the bag is tagged to CNX at your origin. The international allowance normally covers the whole journey, so the domestic sector adds nothing. This is the cleanest setup we see for guests flying in from Europe or Australia.

You still clear immigration at Suvarnabhumi. Depending on routing, you may need to collect the bag for customs and re-drop it at the domestic transfer counter. Ask at origin check-in whether the tag reads CNX, and photograph the tag.

The honest downside: through-checked bags go missing more often on tight connections. A 90-minute layover with immigration queues is where we see clubs arrive a day late. If your connection is under two hours, plan a first day without golf, or book your first tee time for the second morning so a late bag does not cost you a round.

What happens on two separate tickets?

Each airline applies its own rules. You collect the clubs in Bangkok, clear customs, check in again, and pay whatever the domestic carrier charges.

Separate tickets are common when a budget domestic fare looks cheaper. The saving often disappears once you add the golf bag. Your long-haul allowance ends in Bangkok, and the domestic airline treats your clubs as new checked baggage.

If the domestic flight leaves from Don Mueang, you also cross Bangkok between airports with a large golf bag. Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways fly to Chiang Mai from Suvarnabhumi. Thai AirAsia flies from Don Mueang. Flight time on the route is about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 minutes either way. On separate tickets, we advise at least four hours between arrival and the domestic departure, and more on Friday evenings when Bangkok traffic between the two airports can stretch past an hour.

There is one more catch. If your long-haul flight is late and you miss a separately ticketed domestic flight, the domestic airline owes you nothing. You buy a new fare, and your golf bag fee often goes with it.

How do the three main domestic airlines compare for golf bags?

Thai Airways is simplest on a through ticket. Bangkok Airways has a dedicated golf set rule. Thai AirAsia needs pre-booked weight and a Don Mueang transfer.

How much should a packed golf bag weigh?

Aim for 15 to 18 kg packed. That keeps you inside a 23 kg piece with room for shoes, balls and a rain jacket.

In our experience a padded travel cover with 14 clubs commonly lands somewhere in the 12 to 18 kg range. Golfers push it over by packing a full sleeve of balls, two pairs of shoes and clothing to dodge a suitcase fee. That works until the scale reads 24 kg.

Pack a stiff arm or a broom handle beside the driver to take impacts. Remove the driver head if it is adjustable and pack it in a shoe. Keep head covers on every wood. Weigh the packed bag at home on a luggage scale, so you know the number before the check-in agent does.

You do not need to fly in with boxes of balls. Pro shops at Chiang Mai courses stock balls, gloves and tees, and caddies carry tees and markers as standard. A light rain jacket earns its space from June to October, when afternoon storms are common.

Is renting clubs in Chiang Mai the better choice?

For one or two rounds, often yes. For four or more rounds, your own bag usually wins on feel and roughly matches rental cost.

Club rental exists at every course we book. Prices vary by course and season; budget around ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 per set per round and confirm at booking. Four rounds therefore cost roughly ฿4,000 to ฿6,000 in rental, which is close to what a separate-ticket bag fee can run each way.

The downside is quality. Rental sets are mixed, left-handed sets are scarce, and you are learning new clubs on demanding layouts like Alpine Golf Resort, a long championship course where unfamiliar long irons and woods get exposed fast. If you plan to rent, request it in advance so the course holds a set in your hand and shaft flex.

Most Chiang Mai courses do not allow club sharing, so two golfers cannot split one set. Every golfer also plays with a caddie, so you will not carry the rental bag yourself either way.

What if I am only in Chiang Mai for one or two rounds?

Then renting usually makes sense, especially on a layover or a short break where the golf bag adds more hassle than value.

Short trips are where a golf bag hurts most. You carry it through two airports for two rounds. Our Layover package, 2 nights and 2 rounds, is built for exactly this guest, and we can arrange rental sets at the course ahead of arrival.

Courses near the airport keep the day simple. North Hill Golf Club is roughly 15 minutes from CNX, and Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the Old City. Both suit a morning round before an afternoon flight, as long as you leave a buffer for showering and the drive back.

Season matters on a short trip too. November to February is the cool, dry window and the busiest time on the Bangkok to Chiang Mai route, so domestic fares and excess weight both cost more if you book late.

How do I get my golf bag from CNX to the hotel?

Book a private car. A standard taxi or Grab can take a bag, but a golf bag plus suitcases for two golfers often will not fit.

CNX sits about 4 km from the Old City, and an airport taxi typically runs around ฿150 to ฿200 for a 10 to 15 minute trip. That works for one golfer travelling light. Two golfers with travel covers need a van. If you arrange them yourself, pre-booked private round trips to a course often cost somewhere around ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 depending on distance and vehicle size.

Our Chiang Mai airport transfer guide covers the arrival hall and pickup points in detail.

What does a golf package take off your plate?

The ground side. Private transfers sized for golf bags, tee times, caddies, carts and rental requests are arranged before you land.

A package cannot change your airline's baggage rules. What it does is remove everything after the oversize belt at CNX. Your driver meets you with a van that fits the bags, and every course day has a pickup timed to the tee. If you want rental clubs on one round and your own on the rest, we note it on the booking.

Be honest with yourself on value. If you play one round and stay with friends, booking the round direct is often cheaper. Packages pay off from about three rounds, when transfers and tee times stack up. The process is simple: send us your dates, group size and flight times, we reply with a written quote, and the trip is confirmed with a deposit. Our golf trip planning hub lists every package. Frequently asked questions

Does Thai Airways carry golf bags free on domestic flights?

Not as a separate free item. Under its 2026 piece concept, Thai Airways gives domestic economy passengers one checked piece up to 23 kg, and Royal Silk passengers one piece up to 32 kg. Golf equipment counts against that allowance. If your golf bag is your only checked piece, it usually travels inside the allowance at no extra cost. If you also check a suitcase, the second piece is excess. Thai Airways says its flat sport baggage rate does not apply to a purely domestic checked portion, so excess is charged on its domestic table in baht. Confirm the figure on your booking before you fly.

Can I check my golf bag through from London or Sydney to Chiang Mai?

Usually yes, if the international and domestic flights are on one ticket. Your bag is tagged to CNX at your origin and the international allowance normally governs the whole journey, so the domestic leg adds no fee. You still clear Thai immigration at Suvarnabhumi, and depending on routing you may need to collect the bag for customs and re-drop it at the transfer desk. Ask the check-in agent to confirm the tag says CNX. On two separate tickets, nothing is through-checked and each airline applies its own rules.

How much does a golf bag cost on Thai AirAsia from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?

Thai AirAsia does not publish one fixed golf fee that we could verify for this route. Sports equipment has to be pre-booked and counts against the checked baggage weight you buy, and the price moves with the fare, route and booking channel. Airport rates are the most expensive, so add the weight online at booking. Thai AirAsia flies from Don Mueang, not Suvarnabhumi, so an international arrival means a transfer across Bangkok with your clubs before the domestic leg.

Is it cheaper to rent clubs in Chiang Mai than to fly with my own?

For one or two rounds, often yes. Course rental sets commonly run around ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 per round, though prices vary by course and should be confirmed at booking. For four or more rounds that adds up to roughly ฿4,000 to ฿6,000, which is close to what many golfers pay in bag fees on separate tickets. The trade-off is quality. Rental sets are mixed, left-handed sets are scarce, and you lose the feel of your own clubs. Most of our repeat guests bring their own bag.

What size limits apply to a golf bag on Thai domestic flights?

Thai Airways' 2026 piece rules cap a standard checked bag at 158 cm total linear dimensions (length plus width plus height). A padded golf travel bag usually exceeds that, which is why airlines handle golf sets as sports or special baggage rather than a normal suitcase. Bangkok Airways carries one golf set per passenger. Pack the bag well under the weight limit, protect the driver head, and declare it as golf equipment at check-in so it goes to the oversize belt on arrival at CNX.
