Thailand 30-Day Visa Exemption Now Live: What It Means for a Golf Trip

Thailand's new 30-day visa exemption took effect on 15 September 2026, replacing the old 60-day visa-free stay. If you were planning a long Chiang Mai golf trip around that two-month window, the maths has changed. The orders were published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026: they cut the visa-free stay to 30 days, trim the eligible list from about 93 countries to 60, and put border officers back to checking funds, bookings and return tickets. For most golf holidays the practical effect is small, but a few trips need a rethink.

What actually changed on 15 September?

The prior arrangement gave roughly 93 countries a 60-day visa-free stay. That is gone. As immigration advisory Fragomen sets out (accessed 22 September 2026), only 60 nationalities now qualify for exemption, and the free stay is 30 days for tourism only. A single further 30-day extension is available at an immigration office, for a fee, and is not granted automatically. Mauritius and Seychelles passport holders get 15 days. The old assumption that you could turn up and stay two months no longer holds.

Does this shorten my Chiang Mai golf trip?

Only if your trip ran past 30 days on visa exemption, and most do not. A typical golf holiday of a week or two sits comfortably inside the new limit, so booking a package from our golf holidays page changes nothing about how you enter. The people affected are long-stay golfers, snowbirds who overwinter in the north, and anyone stitching together an extended season. If that is you, plan for a proper tourist visa rather than exemption.

What about repeat visits in one season?

This is where the small print catches people out, and where a lot of the online panic is simply wrong. Visa-exempt entry is now limited to twice per calendar year, but that cap applies to land-border crossings only. As Envoy Global reports, arrivals by air are not counted against it, and nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are exempt from the limit outright. Since nearly every golf visitor flies into Chiang Mai, the two-entry cap will not touch most trips at all. Where it does bite is overland hopping across from Malaysia or Laos. If you are planning repeated long stays rather than short flying visits, a multiple-entry tourist visa (METV) gives 60 days per entry across its six-month validity and removes the question entirely.

What do officers check now?

Immigration staff can examine funds, accommodation and onward tickets on arrival, alongside your recent travel history. Carry printed proof: hotel confirmations for your whole stay, evidence of sufficient money, and a return or onward flight. Booked a golf package with us? Which trips should budget for a proper visa?

Anything over 30 days, and any overland itinerary with three or more visa-free land entries in one calendar year. A tourist visa costs money and a little lead time, but it buys certainty. For a single winter golf holiday flown in and out of Chiang Mai, exemption still works and nothing about booking changes.
