Muay Thai and golf fit the same Chiang Mai day with no overlap: tee off at 7:30, finish by 13:00, then watch six or seven bouts from 21:00 for around ฿600 a seat. Gyms run two-hour drop-in classes at roughly ฿300-500, morning or late afternoon. The only rule is to train on a rest day, never the night before your toughest round.
Why does Muay Thai pair so well with a golf trip?
Golf owns the morning and Muay Thai owns the night. Fights start at 21:00 at every Chiang Mai stadium, well after the last putt drops.
Our standard golf day for guests runs 6:30 hotel pickup, 7:30 tee, back at the hotel around 14:00. That leaves a seven-hour gap before the ring lights go on. Most guests fill it with a massage, a pool and dinner. A fight night slots in without moving a single tee time.
The geography helps too. Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium sits on Chang Phuak Road, on the northern edge of the Old City, and Thapae Boxing Stadium is on Moonmuang Road inside the moat. If your hotel is in or near the Old City, both are about a 10-minute walk or a short Grab ride. Compare that with the courses, which ring the valley 30-45 minutes out. You have already done the driving by lunchtime.
For the wider trip shape, the 7-day golf itinerary builds in two rest days. Those are the days a training session belongs.
Where can I watch Muay Thai fights in Chiang Mai?
Three venues matter for visitors: Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium, Thapae Boxing Stadium and Loi Kroh. All price standard seats around ฿600 and start at 21:00.
| Venue | Where | Fight nights | Standard / Ringside / VIP | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium | Chang Phuak Rd, north Old City | Most nights Mon-Sat, 21:00 | ฿600 / ฿1,000 / ฿1,500 | First-timers, tiered seats, 6-7 bouts |
| Thapae Boxing Stadium | Moonmuang Rd, inside the Old City | Most nights Mon-Sat, 21:00 | ฿600 / ฿1,000 / ฿1,500 | Most central, walkable from Thapae Gate |
| Loi Kroh Boxing Stadium | Loi Kroh Rd bar alley | Several nights a week, 21:00 | ฿600 / ฿1,000 / n/a | Cheap, loud, bar-alley setting |
Ringside at around ฿1,000 includes one drink and puts you a metre from the ropes. VIP at around ฿1,500 adds free-flow beer, which is where most of the extra money goes. Standard tiered seats still see the whole ring at Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium, so for a golf group on a budget we book standard and spend the difference on dinner. Current venue details and schedules are on the Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium site (accessed 2026-09-28).
Doors open at 20:00. Turn up at 20:30 for a seat with a clear line to the ring, and expect to be walking out between 23:30 and midnight.
Are the tourist stadiums real Muay Thai or a show?
Mixed. Expect two or three genuine local bouts per card, padded with foreigner-versus-Thai matches and a novelty round. It is entertaining, not Lumpinee.
This is the honest downside. Chiang Mai's stadiums are commercial venues built around visitors. The card usually opens with junior fighters, moves through a couple of foreign gym students against local Thais, and finishes with the strongest bout of the night. The quality of the headline fight varies week to week, and Saturday cards are consistently stronger than a Tuesday.
If you want the sport rather than the spectacle, sit ringside on a Saturday at Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium and ask the gym you train at which of their fighters is on. Watching someone you sparred with that morning changes the evening completely.
Where can I train Muay Thai as a beginner golfer?
Drop-in beginner classes cost roughly ฿300-500 for a two-hour session. Lanna, Hongthong, Dang and The Bear Fight Club all take walk-in beginners.
Beginner-friendly gyms in and around the city, including Lanna Muay Thai, Hongthong, Dang and The Bear Fight Club, sit in the ฿300-500 band for a drop-in class as of 2026. Santai, out in Saraphi, charges more for a full training day and publishes weekly rates on its own price list (accessed 2026-09-28), but it pitches itself at intermediate and advanced fighters and is not the place for a first session. Prices move a little each season, so treat the band as a guide and confirm when you book.
Sessions run in two blocks, typically 8:00-10:00 and 16:00-18:00, Monday to Saturday. The afternoon block is the one that works with golf. Finish your round, eat, and be at the gym by 16:00. Bring your own shorts, a T-shirt and a towel. Gloves and wraps are lent or rented for a small fee at most gyms, but ask when you book.
A first session is 20 minutes of skipping and shadow boxing, an hour of pad work with a trainer, then clinch basics or bag work. Nobody makes a beginner spar. Golfers in their sixties do this every week in Chiang Mai. The trainers scale the pace to whoever is in front of them.
Will a Muay Thai class wreck my golf swing?
For 24-48 hours, yes. Sore hips, tight shoulders and bruised shins do not belong on a 7:00 tee at Alpine. Train on rest days only.
We have watched it happen. A guest did an afternoon class after a round at Mae Jo, then teed off at 7:00 the next morning at Alpine Golf Resort, whose championship tees run past 7,400 yards. Legs gone by the 6th, shoulders locked by the turn, and a scorecard he would rather forget.
The fix is scheduling, not skipping. Put the class on a rest day, or the afternoon before a shorter, flatter round such as Gassan Legacy. Keep the day before Chiang Mai Highlands or Alpine clear of anything harder than a massage.
Watching fights carries no physical cost beyond the late night. The practical limit is the clock: a card that ends at 23:45 and a 6:30 pickup is a five-hour sleep. Ask for an 8:00 or later tee time the morning after a fight night. Our best tee times guide covers why an 8:00 slot costs you nothing in the cool season.
How do I build a five-day golf and Muay Thai itinerary?
Three rounds, one gym session, one fight night. Golf on days 2, 3 and 5, train and watch fights on day 4, fly home day 6.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive CNX, private transfer to hotel | Pool, Old City walk | Dinner, early night |
| 2 | Royal Chiang Mai, 7:30 tee, warm-up round | Massage | Fight night, Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium, 21:00 |
| 3 | Alpine, 8:00 tee (after the late night) | Rest | Dinner on Nimman |
| 4 | Muay Thai class, 8:00-10:00 | Sleep, spa | Optional second fight night |
| 5 | Highlands, 7:30 tee, the hardest round | Clubhouse spa | Farewell dinner |
| 6 | Transfer to CNX |
The order matters. Royal Chiang Mai is a walkable Peter Thomson layout in the Mae Rim valley and a fair warm-up. Alpine on day 3 after a fight night takes an 8:00 tee. The gym session on day 4 leaves two nights of recovery before Highlands, the course most guests want to play fresh.
Two package shapes hold this structure already. The Culture & Golf 5-night package builds three rounds around non-golf days, and the Lanna Signature 7-night gives five rounds with enough slack for two gym sessions. Tell us at enquiry that Muay Thai is on the list and we book the class and the tickets into the schedule.
What does adding Muay Thai cost on top of a golf trip?
Almost nothing. A standard seat and a drop-in class add under ฿1,000 to a trip where a single premium round runs several thousand baht all-in.
For scale, an all-in round at Highlands or Alpine, with green fee, caddie fee and cart, lands in the low-to-mid thousands of baht depending on season. A fight night for a fourball at standard seats is about ฿2,400 total. A drop-in class for the same four golfers is roughly ฿1,200-2,000. Add a short Grab fare each way if the stadium is not walkable from your hotel.
Where a package earns its keep is not the ticket price but the logistics. Your driver already knows the stadium, drops you at the door at 20:30, and collects you at 23:45 without a Grab search in the rain. On a gym morning, the same driver takes you to Saraphi or Chang Phuak and waits. Book everything yourself and you will manage fine, but you will spend the rest day on a phone.
What are the practical rules for a fight night after golf?
Eat before 19:30, sit ringside on a Saturday if the budget allows, tip nothing at the stadium, and hold your driver until the final bell.
- Dinner first. Stadium food is snacks and beer. A fourball that walks out of the clubhouse at 13:30 and into the stadium at 20:30 without a proper meal has a long night.
- Cash at the door works. Tickets are sold on the night, but online pre-booking is often a little cheaper and guarantees the seat on a Saturday.
- Dress code is nil. Shorts and a T-shirt are fine. Save the collared shirt for the course dress code.
- No tipping. Unlike your caddie, nobody at the stadium expects it. The caddie tipping guide covers the golf side.
- Burning season applies indoors too. From mid-January to mid-April the stadiums are open-sided sheds. On a bad March night with AQI past 150, an evening at ringside is two hours of breathing it. Check the reading before you go.
Every course we book is described on its own page, and the enquiry form on the golf hub is where a Muay Thai add-on gets written into a quote.

Can you watch Muay Thai and play golf on the same day in Chiang Mai?
Yes, and it is the easiest combination on the trip. Tee off between 7:00 and 8:00, finish by 13:00, rest through the afternoon, then walk into a stadium for the 21:00 fights. Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium on Chang Phuak Road and Thapae Boxing Stadium on Moonmuang Road are both inside or beside the Old City, so a hotel there puts you about 10 minutes on foot from the ring. Standard seats are around ฿600 at both. The only thing to manage is the finish time. Six or seven bouts run two to three hours, so you are back at the hotel near midnight. Keep the following morning's tee time at 8:00 or later.
How much does a Muay Thai class cost for a tourist in Chiang Mai?
A drop-in group class runs roughly ฿300-500 at most beginner-friendly Chiang Mai gyms as of 2026, with Santai out in Saraphi charging more for a full training day. Private one-hour sessions cost about ฿600-800. Sessions are two hours, typically 8:00-10:00 and 16:00-18:00, Monday to Saturday. Bring your own shorts and a towel. Gloves and wraps are usually lent or rented for a small fee, but confirm with the gym before you turn up.
Will Muay Thai training hurt my golf swing?
For a day, yes. A two-hour beginner session is mostly pad work, kicks and skipping. Expect sore hips, forearms and shins for 24-48 hours, and stiff shoulders from holding a guard. That is a poor set-up for a 7:00 tee time at a long course like Alpine. Our rule for guests is simple: train on a rest day or the day before a shorter, flatter round, never the evening before your hardest course. Watching fights costs you nothing physically apart from a late night.
Which Chiang Mai stadium is best for a first-time fight night?
Chiang Mai Boxing Stadium on Chang Phuak Road is the best first choice. It runs most nights from 21:00, seats are tiered so standard tickets still see the ring, and the card usually carries six or seven bouts including local Thai fighters rather than only tourist exhibition matches. Thapae Boxing Stadium is a close second and is the most central. Loi Kroh is a ring between bars in a bar-alley setting. It is cheap and lively but not everyone's taste, and it runs fewer nights a week, so check the schedule.
Are stadiums open on Sunday in Chiang Mai?
Usually not. The regular Chiang Mai stadiums rarely run fights on Sunday, so plan your fight night for Monday to Saturday and confirm the week's card before you go. Weekend cards, particularly Saturday, tend to draw the stronger fighters and the biggest crowds. If your golf itinerary lands a rest day on a Sunday, use it for a morning gym session instead and book the fights for another evening. Most gyms train Monday to Saturday too, so Sunday is genuinely a day off for both.
Does a CMGT Golf package include Muay Thai tickets or classes?
Not as standard, but we arrange both on request. Every quote we send is built around the rounds, hotel, private driver and airport transfers. If you tell us at enquiry that you want a fight night or a gym session, we add it to the itinerary, book the tickets or the class, and schedule your driver for the evening. Ticket prices are passed through at the stadium rate. Send your dates and rough plan through the golf page and we build it into the quote.
