Is any golf course in Chiang Mai certified sustainable?
Not that we can verify. We found no Chiang Mai course listed as GEO Certified in September 2026, so every local eco claim is self-reported.
The main international standard is run by the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf (accessed 2026-09-25). Its OnCourse programme has courses record actions across 124 best-practice topics, from water and energy use to turf, habitat and pollution, according to Golf Course Industry's coverage of the programme (accessed 2026-09-25). GEO Certified is the independent label at the end of that process.
That leaves a gap. A course can call itself green without anyone checking. We would rather tell you that plainly than invent a ranking. What follows is based on things a golfer can check: distance, walking policy, course size, turf and how staff are treated. Which Chiang Mai courses have the lowest travel footprint?
Lanna Golf Club, North Hill and Mae Jo. All three sit within roughly 10-20 minutes of the city or airport, versus 30-45 minutes or more for most resorts.
Transport is the part of a golf trip's footprint that visiting golfers control most directly. Courses ring the valley, and most sit 30-45 minutes from the Old City. A group playing four far-flung courses in four days can easily spend six hours or more in a vehicle.
- Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the Old City. It opened in 1974 on Royal Thai Army land and runs 27 holes.
- North Hill City Golf Club is about 15 minutes from CNX airport, which makes it useful on arrival or departure day.
- Mae Jo Golf Club is roughly 20 minutes out, set among orchards with views toward Doi Suthep.
The longest transfer is Gassan Khuntan, at 45 minutes or more each way. The mountain scenery is beautiful, but it is the biggest drive of the set. If you want to play it, pair it with a rest afternoon rather than a second course across town.
Can you walk a round of golf in Chiang Mai?
At Lanna Golf Club, usually yes. Walking is permitted there, which is rare in Thailand, where almost every course expects a cart for each pair.
Walking removes a cart charge and the power behind it. At most Chiang Mai resorts the cart is effectively part of the round: Highlands charges ฿750 and Alpine ฿800 for a cart in the Apr-Oct 2026 green season (CMGT Golf, 2026 agent rates). Walking is not realistic at hilly resorts in 32C heat anyway, and we would not recommend trying.
Your caddie still walks with you and carries or pushes the bag, so the local job stays in place. Confirm walking is allowed on your date when you book, since policy can change with the weather and on busy days.
Are 9-hole courses a greener option?
Usually, yes. A 9-hole course needs roughly half the irrigated turf, mowing and maintenance of an 18-hole layout, and a fraction of a 27-hole resort.
Chiang Mai has two useful 9-hole options:
- Chiang Mai Gymkhana was founded in 1898, making it one of the oldest sports clubs in Asia. It plays 9 holes, par 36, right inside the city. Fees are low by local standards, but published figures are dated, so confirm at booking.
- Star Dome Golf Club is a 9-hole floodlit course close to the city. Older reviews quote bundled prices for nine holes, but those figures may have changed, so confirm at booking.
The trade-off is real: neither is a destination round. Conditioning and facilities do not match the resorts. For a relaxed evening or a rest-day hit, though, they are the lightest-touch golf in the province, and neither needs a long transfer.
Which course has the most water-wise turf?
Chiang Mai Highlands, which uses seashore paspalum. It tolerates poorer-quality and recycled water better than most grasses, though it still needs regular irrigation.
Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa is a Lee Schmidt design with 27 holes and is among the best-conditioned courses in the region. The USGA's water resource case studies (accessed 2026-09-25) describe paspalum thriving on reclaimed water with minimal nitrogen.
Here is the honest part. The same USGA material notes paspalum's overall water requirement is not much different from bermudagrass. Its advantage is flexibility on water source and lower fertiliser need, not a dramatic cut in volume. We have not seen Highlands publish its water source or usage figures. Ask at the clubhouse; it is a fair question.
How do the main courses compare on impact?
No course wins on everything. Close-in courses win on transport, 9-hole courses on footprint, and Highlands on turf choice, while floodlit courses cost more energy.

Does floodlit night golf cost more energy?
Yes. Summit Green Valley, Gassan Legacy and Star Dome all run floodlights, and lighting a course after dark is a real power cost.
Gassan Legacy charges ฿1,950 by day and ฿1,650 at night, all-in (CMGT Golf, 2026). Summit Green Valley also offers night rounds. Night golf dodges the midday heat, which is a comfort and safety gain in April and May. It is still extra electricity for a leisure activity. Our advice: play one night round for the experience if it appeals, and keep the rest of the trip in daylight.
When is the lowest-impact time to golf in Chiang Mai?
June to October, the green season. Rain handles much of the irrigation, green fees drop, and courses are quieter. Avoid March, when burning-season smoke peaks.

The season to avoid runs roughly mid-January to mid-April, worst in March. That haze comes from agricultural and forest burning across the region, not from golf, but it affects your health on course. How does a golf trip support local people?
Mostly through caddies. Every golfer takes one, and the tip of ฿400-600 per round is a large share of their income.

What should you ask a course before you book?
Ask four things: where irrigation water comes from, whether walking is allowed, how chemicals are managed, and how caddies are paid. Vague answers tell you something.
- Water source. Rain-fed ponds and reservoirs are better than drawing on local supply in the dry months.
- Walking policy. Allowed, allowed on quiet days, or never.
- Turf and chemicals. Paspalum needs less nitrogen than many grasses. Ask about pesticide rules near water hazards.
- Caddie pay. Whether the caddie fee reaches the caddie in full.
