Can You Walk Golf Courses in Chiang Mai? Walking vs Riding

Can you walk golf courses in Chiang Mai? Most resort courses make carts compulsory. Here are the few that let you walk, and what walking really saves you.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team25 Sept 20269 min read

You can walk only a handful of Chiang Mai golf courses. Lanna Golf Club and the 9-hole Chiang Mai Gymkhana are the realistic options, while resort courses like Highlands, Alpine and North Hill expect visitors to ride. Walking at Lanna saved about ฿350 per round in 2026. For most trips, the cart is simply part of the green fee.

Which Chiang Mai golf courses let you walk?

Lanna Golf Club is the clearest walking course near the city. Chiang Mai Gymkhana is walkable too. Most premium resort courses require a cart for visitors.

We get this question from walkers every season, usually from UK and Australian golfers who never ride at home. The honest answer is that Chiang Mai golf is built around the cart and caddie model. Courses ring the valley on hilly ground, green-to-tee distances are long, and pace of play is managed around carts.

Lanna Golf Club is the exception. It is a 27-hole layout run by the Royal Thai Army inside the Lanna Sports Center, roughly 10 minutes from the Old City and mostly flat. GolfAsian's Lanna course page (accessed 2026-09-25) describes it as one of the few Chiang Mai courses where carrying or pulling a bag is practical. It is a busy local course with a relaxed feel, popular with Thai golfers and long-stay expats, and the conditioning is honest rather than resort-grade.

Chiang Mai Gymkhana is the other walking-friendly pick. It is a short 9-hole course inside the Gymkhana Club, founded in 1898 and one of the oldest sports clubs in Asia. It suits a late-afternoon loop on arrival day more than a full day's golf. Its fees are low but change often, so confirm them at booking.

Where are carts compulsory?

At Chiangmai Highlands, Alpine and the Gassan courses, rates come with the cart included. Assume the same at other resort courses unless the course confirms otherwise.

Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa publishes its rates with cart and caddie built in. Its official rates page (accessed 2026-09-25) lists the cart as part of the round, and the 2026 green-season all-in of ฿3,400 includes a ฿750 cart. At North Hill Golf Club, visitors should expect to hire a cart, and any walking allowance is something we check with the club for your date.

Other resort courses, including Alpine Golf Resort, Summit Green Valley and the three Gassan courses, sell rates with a cart bundled in. We have not seen a published walking rate at any of them. Treat walking there as unlikely and ask before you travel.

How much does walking actually save?

About ฿350 per round at Lanna, and nothing at resort courses. Walking is about the experience, not the budget.

The gap at Lanna was reported at roughly ฿1,000 walking against ฿1,350 with a cart in 2026. That is the whole saving. At Highlands, Alpine and the Gassan courses, the cart is inside the price, so there is no cheaper option to pick.

Over a four-round trip, fitting one walking round at Lanna saves you about ฿350. That is a round of drinks at the clubhouse, not a reason to rebuild your itinerary.

Do you still need a caddie when you walk?

Usually, yes. On walking rounds the caddie carries or pulls your bag, reads greens and keeps score, just without the cart.

Caddies are standard across Thailand, one per golfer, and most are women who know every green on their course. At Lanna, booking agents list caddie and cart as optional, but we recommend taking one for the first round. The Army course has quirks, including shared fairways and local rules, that a caddie sorts out quickly.

Budget ฿300 to ฿400 for the caddie fee, plus a cash tip of ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, handed over at the bag drop. A walking caddie works harder than a riding one, so tip toward the top of that range. For the full picture, read our guide to Chiang Mai caddie culture and tipping.

Is it too hot to walk 18 holes in Chiang Mai?

From November to February, walking at dawn is comfortable. From March to May, it is a poor idea because of heat and smoke.

The cool-dry months are the walking window. Early mornings are fresh, and afternoon highs usually sit around 28 to 32C. Tee off at 6:30am and you finish before the worst of the heat.

March to May is a different story. Temperatures often pass 35C, and the burning season usually peaks in March. On the worst days, IQAir (accessed 2026-09-25) has ranked Chiang Mai among the most polluted cities in the world. Walking around 7 km in that air is not worth it. Our burning season golf guide covers which weeks to avoid.

The June to October green season is humid, with afternoon storms heaviest in September and October. Early tee times usually stay dry. See our beat the heat guide for timing and hydration.

Which course suits a walker who also wants a top layout?

None of the premium layouts allow walking, so walkers should combine one Lanna round with carts elsewhere.

This is the honest trade-off, and the main downside of Chiang Mai for dedicated walkers. Highlands, one of the best-conditioned courses in the region, and Alpine, the long championship test, both need a cart. If walking is a must for every round, your choice shrinks to Lanna and Gymkhana, and you miss the courses that make Chiang Mai worth the flight.

Most walkers we host settle on a mix. They walk Lanna on arrival day as a loosener, since it is about 10 minutes from most Old City hotels, then ride at the resort courses. The cart at Highlands also saves real climbing: its holes cover hilly ground with long transfers between greens and tees.

Does riding slow you down or speed you up?

Riding is faster at resort courses because they are built for carts. Walking Lanna takes about the same time, since pace is set by the group ahead.

A typical resort round in Chiang Mai runs 4.5 to 5 hours with a cart, depending on the day and the groups ahead. Walking a flat course like Lanna takes similar time, because Thai courses are rarely empty and pace follows the field. Weekend mornings at Lanna are busy with local golfers, so book a weekday if you want space.

One rule to know: some Thai courses limit walking at certain times or during maintenance, as Fairways of Eden notes in its cart versus walking guide (accessed 2026-09-25). Confirm the policy for your date.

What does a walking round at Lanna look like on the day?

Arrive 30 minutes early, pay at the counter, meet your caddie at the bag drop, and expect a busy, friendly local course rather than a quiet resort.

From Old City and Nimman hotels, the drive to Lanna is short, usually 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Our drivers drop you at the bag drop and wait or return at a set time. Arrive about 30 minutes before your tee time so you can pay, change and warm up without rushing.

Your caddie is assigned at the bag drop. On a walking round she carries your bag or uses a pull trolley, so tell her before you start whether you want her to carry. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, light long sleeves or sleeves you can add, and reapply sunscreen at the turn. Most Thai courses have refreshment stops on the course, and cold water there costs little, but carry your own two litres anyway.

Pay the caddie tip in cash at the end, in baht. Keep small notes ready, as change is not always easy at the bag drop.

How do we plan walking rounds into a package?

Tell us you want to walk, and we build your itinerary around one or two Lanna rounds plus cart rounds at the premium courses.

Our packages cover green fees, caddies, carts where required, your hotel, private driver and airport transfers. For walkers, the Northern Value 4-night package fits a Lanna walking round easily, and the Weekend Warrior 3-night package works for a short trip. If you only want one walking round at Lanna, booking it direct is cheaper than any package, and we will say so.

Send your dates and walking preferences through our Chiang Mai golf enquiry page and we reply with a quote after checking tee times and walking policies for your dates. You can also compare every layout in our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you walk golf courses in Chiang Mai?

At a few, yes. Lanna Golf Club, about 10 minutes from the Old City, is the clearest option. It is mostly flat, run by the Royal Thai Army, and lets you walk. In 2026 its walking rate was reported at around ฿1,000, against ฿1,350 with a cart. Chiang Mai Gymkhana, a 9-hole heritage club in town, is also a walking-style course. The premium resort courses, including Chiangmai Highlands and Alpine, sell rates with the cart included. Always confirm the walking policy when you book, because rules can change with season and maintenance.

Is a golf cart compulsory at Chiangmai Highlands?

Yes. Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort treats both the cart and the caddie as part of the visitor round. Its 2026 green-season all-in rate of ฿3,400 already bundles the green fee, caddie fee and a ฿750 cart, so there is no cheaper walking price to choose. The Schmidt-Curley layout spreads its holes across hilly ground with long green-to-tee gaps, so walking would be slow even if it were allowed. Treat the cart as part of the green fee when you budget for Highlands.

Do I still need a caddie if I walk?

At most Thai courses, yes. A caddie is standard, one per golfer, and at walking courses she typically carries or pulls your bag instead of riding a cart. At Lanna, several booking agents list caddie and cart use as optional, but many visitors still take a caddie for local knowledge. Budget the caddie fee to the course, usually ฿300 to ฿400 in Chiang Mai, plus a cash tip of ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes. Confirm at booking whether the caddie is included in your rate.

Is it too hot to walk 18 holes in Chiang Mai?

It depends on the month and your tee time. November to February is the realistic walking window, with cool mornings and afternoon highs around 28 to 32C. March to May often runs above 35C and overlaps the burning season, when air quality can be very poor, so walking then is a bad idea. In the June to October green season, humidity is high, but a 6:30am tee time usually finishes before the afternoon storms. Carry at least two litres of water per person.

How much money does walking save in Chiang Mai?

Less than most golfers expect. At Lanna, the reported 2026 gap was about ฿350 per round (roughly ฿1,000 walking versus ฿1,350 with a cart). At resort courses there is no saving at all, because the cart fee of roughly ฿700 to ฿800 is built into the rate. Over a four-round trip, walking Lanna once saves about ฿350 in total. The real reason to walk is the experience and exercise, not the money.
