Golf Clothing for Hot Humid Weather: Chiang Mai Packing

Golf clothing for hot humid weather in Chiang Mai: the gloves, shoes, grips and fabrics that hold up in 81% humidity, plus what to rent and what to pack.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team11 Oct 20268 min read

For hot, humid golf in Chiang Mai, pack synthetic polos (no cotton), two gloves per round or a pair of rain gloves, waterproof spikeless shoes for June to October, and a dry towel. Average humidity reaches 81% in August and September, and gear that works fine at home starts slipping by the back nine.

We run golf trips on the ground in Chiang Mai, so this list comes from what fails first on our guests' rounds: gloves, then shirts, then grips. Below is what to pack, what to rent locally, and what to skip.

How humid does Chiang Mai golf actually get?

Very humid in the green season: around 79-81% from July to October. March is the driest month at 52%, but it brings smoke instead of sweat.

The Chiang Mai climate table on chiangmai.net (Thai Meteorological Department and Royal Irrigation Department data, 1981-2015, accessed 2026-10-11) shows humidity climbing from 57% in April to 81% in August and September. Average highs stay around 31-32C through that stretch. August also averages 216.9 mm of rain, the wettest month of the year.

This is why the right gear depends on the month. A November round needs sun protection and a light layer for a 7am tee time, when the valley can feel cool before the sun clears the hills. A September round needs everything below.

For a month-by-month breakdown of conditions, see our guide to the best time for golf in Chiang Mai.

What golf clothing works best in hot humid weather?

Lightweight polyester or poly-spandex polos with mesh venting, quick-dry tailored shorts, and thin synthetic socks. Cotton holds sweat and stays heavy all round.

Humidity stops sweat from evaporating, so the fabric has to move it off your skin. Here is how the common options held up on our guests' rounds.

One honest trade-off: white and pale colours are the coolest under the sun, but they show sweat and sunscreen by the closing holes. Mid-tones like light grey or sky blue hide it better and still reflect heat.

How many golf gloves should I pack for a tropical trip?

Two per round from June to October, or a pair of rain gloves. From November to February, two gloves for the whole trip is usually enough.

A cabretta leather glove gives the best feel, but in 80% humidity it absorbs sweat, darkens and starts slipping around the middle of the round. Our standing advice to guests is to swap at the turn and clip the wet glove to the cart in the sun.

Three options work:

  • Several leather gloves, rotated. Best feel, highest count. Bring four for a four-round trip.
  • Synthetic or hybrid gloves. Hold grip longer when damp and handle salt better, with a slight loss of feel.
  • Rain gloves (a pair, both hands). These grip harder the wetter they get. Some golfers wear them all year in the tropics, as this guide to sweaty hands on golfworkoutprogram.com (accessed 2026-10-11) notes. The downside is thickness: putting feel suffers, so many players take the right-hand glove off on the greens.

The same guide recommends a wet, cold towel to cool your hands between shots and a dry one to dry them. That's exactly what a Thai caddie does if you ask.

Which golf shoes handle wet fairways and heat?

Waterproof spikeless shoes with a deep tread are the best all-rounder. Pack thin socks, because waterproof membranes run hot by late morning.

Green-season tee times often start on dew-soaked or rain-soaked turf, and a mesh shoe can be wet through within a few holes. Some Thai courses don't allow metal spikes, so soft spikes or spikeless soles are the safe choice for every course on the itinerary.

The hillier layouts, such as Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa, get slick on sloping cart paths and bunker faces after a storm, so tread depth matters more there than on flat valley courses. If your trip is seven nights or more, pack a second pair so one can dry while you wear the other.

Do my grips need changing before a humid golf trip?

If your grips are over a year old or feel shiny, yes. Humidity turns worn rubber slick. Corded or half-cord grips hold best when wet.

Fresh rubber grips are fine in dry November air. In September they slip. Corded grips, such as half-cord designs with cord in the upper-hand section, keep traction when damp, though they feel harsh on bare hands at first. Fit them two to three weeks before you fly so the feel is familiar.

Your caddie wipes each grip before handing over the club, which helps a lot. They can't fix a grip that's already worn smooth, and we haven't seen a regrip service at the courses we use, so sort it at home.

What rain gear is worth packing for the green season?

A packable rain jacket, a waterproof bag cover, and a towel clip. Skip waterproof trousers, because the storms are usually short and you'll overheat.

Storms in August and September often pass within an hour and tend to arrive in the afternoon, so an early tee time usually finishes dry. The caddie carries a course umbrella. A light jacket is for waiting out lightning holds in the cart, not for playing in.

Does the dress code allow cooler clothing?

No. Collared shirts and tailored shorts are the standard, even at 32C. Denim, sports shorts, sandals and collarless shirts can get you turned away at the desk.

Mock-neck and collarless golf tops are a grey area. Some clubs accept them and some don't, so treat them as risky unless the club has confirmed. Our Chiang Mai golf dress code guide goes club by club.

If heat is the worry, change the tee time, not the dress code. A few courses in the area offer floodlit evening golf, including Gassan Legacy and Summit Green Valley at times, though schedules and rates change by season, so ask us what is running for your dates. More heat tactics are in how to beat the heat on Chiang Mai golf.

What should I pack versus buy or rent in Chiang Mai?

Pack gloves, shoes, polos and any grip you depend on. Rent clubs if the airline bag fee doesn't pay off, and use the pro shop for balls and backup.

Club rental is available at the major courses. Rates commonly sit around ฿1,000-1,500 per set and differ by course, so confirm at booking. Pro shops carry gloves, but large and extra-large sizes tend to go first, and prices usually run above what you'd pay at home.

Pack this:

  • 1 polo per round, plus 1 spare
  • 2 gloves per round from June to October (or a pair of rain gloves)
  • Waterproof spikeless shoes, plus thin synthetic socks
  • Packable rain jacket and bag cover
  • SPF 50, a vented cap and a cooling towel
  • N95 masks if you're travelling late February to April (see burning season golf in Chiang Mai)

The March humidity low comes with burning-season smoke. Air quality can be poor on bad days, so the kit question then becomes masks and an air-quality app, not gloves.

What does a golf package take off the packing list?

Transport, tee times, caddie bookings and course logistics. You still bring your own clothing, but a private driver means wet kit dries in the van between rounds.

An all-in package covers green fees, caddies, carts, the hotel, a private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support. That matters for gear in two ways. Your clubs and wet shoes stay in an air-conditioned van rather than a taxi boot. And if a storm rolls in, we work on moving the tee time instead of you rebooking by phone.

The honest case against: if you're playing one round on a city trip, booking that round directly can cost less. Packages make more sense from about three rounds up. Compare routes like the Highlands Classic 5-night package, then send us your dates through the CMGT Golf enquiry page for a quote. We confirm tee times with the courses after you enquire, so allow a little time for a reply. For a first trip, read our list of Chiang Mai golf first-timer mistakes too.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to play golf in hot humid weather?

Wear a light polyester or poly-spandex polo with mesh panels, tailored shorts in a quick-dry fabric, and thin synthetic socks. Pick a light or mid colour. White is coolest but shows sweat and sunscreen marks by the back nine. Skip cotton polos. In Chiang Mai's wet months they soak through fast and stay heavy. Bring one fresh shirt per round and a spare for long days, because laundry often won't dry in the humidity. Add a wide-brim hat or a cap with a neck flap, and a cooling towel. Chiang Mai courses expect a collared shirt, so leave mock-neck tees at home unless the club has confirmed they're allowed.

How many golf gloves do I need for a Chiang Mai golf trip?

Plan on two gloves per round in the wet months, June to October. Pack at least four for a four-round trip, or switch to a pair of rain gloves. Average humidity in Chiang Mai reaches 81% in August and September, so a leather glove gets damp early and starts slipping on the back nine. Swap gloves at the turn and leave the wet one clipped to the cart in the sun. From November to February the air is drier and two gloves for the whole trip are usually enough. Cabretta leather stiffens from salt, so rinse it in fresh water after the round.

Are waterproof golf shoes necessary in Chiang Mai?

From June to October, yes. Early tee times start on soaked grass, and short afternoon storms are common in August and September. A waterproof spikeless shoe with a deep tread is the best all-rounder. Some Thai courses don't allow metal spikes, so soft spikes or spikeless are the safe choice. The downside is heat: a fully waterproof shoe runs hot by late morning, so wear thin synthetic socks and pack a second pair for the afternoon. In the dry cool season from November to February a breathable mesh golf shoe is fine and more comfortable.

Can I rent golf clubs and buy gloves at Chiang Mai courses?

The major Chiang Mai courses rent full club sets. Prices commonly sit somewhere around ฿1,000-1,500 per set, but they vary by course, so confirm at booking. Pro shops sell gloves, balls, hats and towels, though they stock fewer sizes and usually cost more than shopping at home. Large and extra-large gloves tend to sell out first. Bring your own gloves, shoes and any grip you depend on, and treat the pro shop as backup. Plan on one rental set per golfer rather than sharing a bag.

Do caddies in Chiang Mai help with wet grips and towels?

Yes. Caddies are standard at Thai courses, one per golfer, and keeping your clubs clean and dry is part of the job. A good caddie wipes your grip before handing you the club, carries a wet towel and a dry towel, and holds an umbrella over you in rain or strong sun. The caddie fee is paid to the course, typically a few hundred baht in Chiang Mai, and you hand a separate cash tip to your caddie at the end of the round. A caddie can't fix a glove that's already soaked, though, so pack spares.
