When is the rainy season for Chiang Mai golf?

The green or rainy season runs April 1 to October 31, the opposite of the November-to-March dry peak. It is the cheapest, quietest, most short-notice-bookable stretch of the golf year.

The season is not one weather pattern. April and May are hot, with 35C afternoons and early storms, and they overlap the tail of burning season. June, July and August are the sweet spot: warm mornings, reliable but brief afternoon rain, deep-green fairways. September and October are the true wet months before the dry season returns. Will rain actually stop me playing?

Rarely, if you tee off early. Rain here arrives as short, heavy late-afternoon storms, usually 30 to 90 minutes, then clears. Mornings are commonly dry and the greenest of the year.

The monsoon pattern is a gift to a golfer who plans around it. Storms build with the afternoon heat and break late, so the playable window is the morning. What is the honest downside?

Softer ground, casual water and the odd cart-path-only day. September and October can wash out an afternoon, and some courses aerate greens in the low season.

The rain that keeps fairways lush also leaves them soft, so you get less roll and the occasional puddle in a low fairway. Drainage varies a lot between courses. What should I pack for rainy-season golf?

A compact umbrella, a couple of spare gloves, quick-dry layers and shoes you do not mind getting wet. Your caddie covers the on-course basics, so pack light and pack smart.

Most Thai courses supply a large umbrella on the cart and your caddie manages it, so you do not need a full rain suit for a short storm. What actually saves a round is keeping your hands dry: bring two or three gloves in a zip bag and swap the moment one gets damp, because a wet glove is what ruins your grip, not the rain itself. A small towel clipped inside the bag and a waterproof cover for the clubs handle the rest. Wear breathable, quick-dry layers rather than heavy waterproofs, since the heat is the bigger discomfort at 30C-plus humidity. Waterproof or mesh golf shoes and a spare pair of socks in the bag mean a soaked low fairway does not follow you to lunch.
