Birdwatching on Chiang Mai Golf Courses: What to Spot

Birdwatching on Chiang Mai golf courses: the kingfishers, rollers and egrets we see on rounds, which courses suit wildlife, and the best months to look.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team12 Oct 20269 min read

Chiang Mai golf courses are good, easy birding: on a typical morning round you can expect a dozen or more common lowland species, including kingfishers, egrets, lapwings, drongos and Indian rollers. Courses with lots of water or forest edge do best. The serious rarities live higher up, on Doi Inthanon, where the national park list runs to around 500 species. Book the first tee time from November to February.

What birds do golfers actually see on Chiang Mai courses?

Mostly common open-country and wetland birds: lapwings on fairways, egrets and herons at the ponds, kingfishers on posts, drongos and rollers on wires.

A Chiang Mai golf course is a managed mix of open grass, ponds, tree lines and rough, set among rice paddies and orchards. That suits birds that like farmland and water. These are the species our guests ask about most, roughly in order of how often they turn up:

  • Red-wattled lapwing. Loud, on the fairways, and will scold you if you walk near a nest.
  • Cattle egret, little egret and Chinese pond heron. Around every water hazard, and they often follow the mowers.
  • White-throated kingfisher. Bright blue, perches on yardage posts and flag sticks. The bird most guests photograph.
  • Black drongo and ashy woodswallow. On wires and dead branches, hunting insects over the fairway.
  • Indian roller. Dull until it flies, then shows electric blue wings.
  • Green bee-eater. Small, green, tail streamers, hawks insects off the tee boxes.
  • Oriental magpie-robin, sooty-headed and red-whiskered bulbuls, spotted dove, common myna. Around clubhouses and tree lines.
  • Black-winged kite and shikra. Small raptors hunting the rough.

Honest framing: these are common birds. A golf course will not give you the forest specialists Chiang Mai is famous for among birders. It will give you a relaxed, colourful round with a running bird list, which is the point.

How many bird species does the Chiang Mai area have?

A lot. Thailand records several hundred species, and Doi Inthanon alone, beyond the nearest course, lists around 500.

The BirdLife International Thailand profile (accessed 2026-10-12) puts the national total at 937 species, though other checklists run higher depending on taxonomy. The Thai National Parks Doi Inthanon wildlife list (accessed 2026-10-12) shows 511 species, and the site notes the list includes some historical records and is not guaranteed complete. For live sightings by location, the eBird Chiang Mai province page shows what birders have reported recently, which is a useful check on what is around the week you travel.

Which Chiang Mai golf courses are best for birds?

Courses with water and forest edges beat open parkland. Summit Green Valley and Alpine for water birds, Mae Jo and Inthanon for orchard and forest edge.

Summit Green Valley has water on nearly every hole, so it is the most reliable for herons and kingfishers. Alpine Golf Resort combines lakes, the island-green par 3 and a green set in a rice paddy, which pulls in paddy birds. Mae Jo Golf Club sits in an orchard setting about 20 minutes from the city, good for tree-loving species. Chiangmai Inthanon Golf and Natural Resort and Gassan Khuntan bring you closest to forested hills. If you want us to pick the mix for your dates, start from our Chiang Mai golf holiday page.

Is Chiang Mai Highlands good for nature lovers?

Yes for scenery and a calm round, less so for rare birds. It is the best-conditioned course in the region, ฿3,400 all-in in green season.

Chiang Mai Highlands Golf and Spa is a Lee Schmidt design with 27 holes, mature planting and mountain views. Expect lapwings, rollers and black-winged kites working the open ground, and bulbuls in the planted beds near the clubhouse. The green-season all-in rate is ฿3,400 (฿2,250 green, ฿400 caddie, ฿750 cart, CMGT Golf, 2026). Pair it with the spa if a non-golfer partner is along. For how it ranks on golf alone, see our best golf courses in Chiang Mai guide.

When is the best season for birds and golf together?

November to February. Cool, clear mornings, peak golf conditions, and winter migrants are in the valley alongside resident birds.

From November, migrants arrive from further north: brown shrikes on fence lines, wagtails on wet fairways, more raptors overhead. Highland courses are cool on early January mornings, often in the mid to high teens Celsius, so birds stay active longer. It is also high season, the dearest and hardest time to get early tee times, so book a few weeks ahead.

June to October is the green season. Courses are lush, rates are lowest, and resident birds are breeding and calling. Afternoon storms tend to be heaviest late in the season, so plan morning rounds only. Our best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide covers the month-by-month detail.

What time of day should I tee off to see the most birds?

The first tee time of the day. Birds are most active in the first two hours after sunrise, and the course is quietest.

In high season, the first tee times usually go off from around 6:30 to 7:00. By mid-morning the heat builds and most birds go quiet in the shade. The early slot also means you are not holding up a group behind you when you pause to look at a kingfisher. For courses 40 minutes or more from the city, that means a pickup before 6:00. See our best tee times in Chiang Mai guide for how the early slots work at each course.

Does birdwatching slow down a round of golf?

It can, and that is the main downside. Watch birds between shots, not instead of them, and keep pace with the group behind.

This is the honest trade-off. Slow play annoys everyone, and Thai courses can be busy on high-season mornings. Our rule for guests: binoculars stay in the cart bag, you look while walking to your ball or waiting on the tee, and you never stop the cart in a fairway for a photo. A compact pair of 8x binoculars and a bird ID app with photos is all you need. If you want to really birdwatch, with a scope and a patient guide, do it on a separate morning off the course.

Will my caddie know the birds on the course?

Usually they know where the birds are, not their English names. Caddies work the same course every day and notice patterns.

Caddies are mandatory in Thailand, one per golfer. Ours regularly point out the kingfisher that sits on the same post every morning, or the egrets that gather after the sprinklers. Most use Thai names, so an app with photos bridges the gap. Caddie fees run ฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses, and the tip is separate: ฿400-600 per 18 holes in cash at the bag drop (CMGT Golf, 2026). Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette.

How do I combine a golf round with real birding on Doi Inthanon?

Play Chiangmai Inthanon in the morning, then drive up the mountain, or split the day so a partner birds while you golf.

Thailand's highest mountain holds the forest specialists that keep birders coming back. The summit is noticeably colder than the valley, so pack a layer. Our guide to the best way to experience Doi Inthanon covers the summit, the twin pagodas and the trails. If you want culture and nature days built in, the Culture and Golf 5-night package has 3 rounds and gives you room for a mountain day.

Should I book a package or arrange a nature-focused golf trip myself?

For one round, booking direct can be cheaper. For three or more rounds plus a mountain day, a package saves the transport puzzle.

A single round at Mae Jo or Lanna Golf Club is easy to book yourself with a taxi. The logistics get harder once you add early tee times at courses 30 to 45 minutes out, a dawn pickup, and a separate day up Doi Inthanon. Private round trips to a course run about ฿1,400-2,500, and Grab is unreliable for 6:00 pickups with a golf bag. Our packages fold in green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support. We are enquiry-driven: tell us your dates and what you want to see, and we come back with a quote through our Chiang Mai golf holiday page.

Frequently asked questions

What birds will I see on a Chiang Mai golf course?

Most rounds turn up the same reliable lowland species. Red-wattled lapwings call from the fairways, cattle egrets and Chinese pond herons work the water edges, and white-throated kingfishers perch on yardage posts. Black drongos, Indian rollers, green bee-eaters and oriental magpie-robins are regular too. From November to March, winter migrants such as brown shrikes and wagtails add variety. These are common birds of open farmland and water, not rare forest species. For rarities you need the mountain forests of Doi Inthanon, where the national park list runs to around 500 species (thainationalparks.com, accessed 2026-10-12).

Which Chiang Mai golf course is best for birdwatching?

For water birds, Summit Green Valley, with water on nearly every hole, and Alpine Golf Resort, with its island-green par 3 and rice-paddy setting. For a forest-edge and orchard mix, Mae Jo Golf Club, around 20 minutes from the city. For the best chance of mountain species on a golf day, Chiangmai Inthanon Golf and Natural Resort, about 40 minutes south toward Doi Inthanon. Its green fee is ฿1,400, with ฿300 caddie and ฿700 cart (CMGT Golf, 2026), but reviews note its conditioning has declined. Pick it for the setting, not the greens.

When is the best time of year for birds on a Chiang Mai golf trip?

November to February. It is the cool dry season, the peak golf months, and winter migrants from further north are in the valley. Early tee times in January often start in the mid to high teens Celsius on the highland courses, and birds are most active in the first two hours after sunrise. From roughly mid-January to mid-April, burning-season smoke cuts visibility and air quality, often into the unhealthy range. June to October is green season: lush, cheapest, with afternoon storms, and resident birds are breeding and loud. Book the first tee time of the day whatever the month.

Will my caddie help me spot birds?

Often yes, but do not expect a bird guide. Chiang Mai caddies are mandatory, one per golfer, and they know their course hole by hole, including where the kingfisher sits or where the egrets gather after the sprinklers run. Most know Thai names rather than English ones, so a field guide app helps. Ask politely and keep the pace moving. Your caddie fee is paid to the course (฿300-400 at most Chiang Mai courses), and the tip is separate: ฿400-600 per 18 holes in cash at the bag drop (CMGT Golf, 2026).

Can a non-golfing partner come along to birdwatch?

Usually, yes. Most courses allow a non-playing companion to ride along or walk, but policies and any spectator fee vary by course, so we confirm at booking. Lanna Golf Club is one of the few courses where walking is generally allowed, which is quieter for spotting birds. A better plan for a keen birder is a split day: the golfer plays Chiangmai Inthanon in the morning while the partner takes a guided birding trip up Doi Inthanon, and both meet for lunch. We arrange that kind of day as part of a quoted package.
