For a winter golf trip, the strongest long-haul alternative to Spain is Chiang Mai. In December and January you get 28C afternoons, cool 15 to 22C mornings and almost no rain, while Málaga averages about 17C in January and has regular wet spells. You pay for that with a journey of 13 hours or more. On the course, the numbers mostly favour Thailand.
Why are European golfers looking beyond Spain in winter?
Spain's winter is mild rather than warm, its best courses fill up with northern Europeans, and rain spoils more rounds than the brochures suggest.
Spain is still the default winter golf trip, for good reasons. Flights take two to three hours, the time difference is zero to one hour, and the Costa del Sol has dozens of courses close together. The weather is the weak point. Weather2Travel's Málaga climate data (accessed 2026-10-30) puts January rainfall at about 79 mm. Thomas Cook's January guide (accessed 2026-10-30) gives an average of 17C, with lows around 13C and only around five or six hours of sun a day.
That is fine golf weather if you are lucky. The golfers we host tell the same story: two good days, one washed out, then a cold wind. They want a trip where the weather is not a gamble, and they accept a long-haul flight to get it.
How does Chiang Mai's winter weather compare with Spain's?
From November to February, Chiang Mai's dry season beats southern Spain for warmth, sunshine and rain. Days reach around 28 to 29C and very few are wet.
Weather2Travel's Chiang Mai climate page (accessed 2026-10-30) matches what we see on the ground. December and January are the coolest months, humidity is low, and the mountains around the valley stay clear. Golfers on a 7:00 tee time at Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa often start in a light jumper and are down to a polo by the 12th hole.

Which long-haul options should a European winter golfer compare?
For a reliable golf trip from Europe between November and February, the realistic shortlist is Chiang Mai, Thailand's beach hubs and Bali. Each one has a different trade-off.
| Destination | Winter weather | Golf density | Main downside | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southern Spain (benchmark) | Mild, about 17C, some rain | Very high | Unreliable weather, busy tee sheets | Short breaks, low airfare |
| Chiang Mai, Thailand | Dry, warm days, cool mornings | High, most courses 30-45 min from city | Long flight with a connection, March smoke | Golf-first trips of 7+ nights |
| Hua Hin / Phuket, Thailand | Hot, humid, beach climate | Medium to high | Hotter rounds, beach-resort prices | Golf plus beach, March dates |
| Bali, Indonesia | Wet season Nov-Mar | Low | Rain in the European winter, few courses | Mixed holidays, not pure golf |
We compare one of these pairings in more depth in Bali vs Chiang Mai for golf. The short version: Bali's wet season falls right across the European winter, which makes it a weaker choice for a pure golf trip in December and January.
What does a round in Chiang Mai cost compared with Spain?
In green season, an all-in round in Chiang Mai, with the mandatory caddie and cart, costs about ฿1,950 to ฿3,700. Prices rise in high season but usually stay below premium Spanish rounds.
The most reliable published figures we have are the all-in rates for the Apr-Oct 2026 green season. Winter is high season, and most courses do not publish clear high-season rack rates. Treat the figures below as the floor and confirm the winter rate when you book.
| Course | Holes | Green-season all-in (Apr-Oct 2026) | What it's known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpine Golf Resort | 27 | ฿3,700 | Ron Garl design, ex-Asian Tour host |
| Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa | 27 | ฿3,400 | Best conditioning in the region |
| Gassan Legacy | 18 | ฿1,950 day / ฿1,650 night | Flattest Gassan, floodlit |
| Gassan Panorama | 18 | ฿1,950 | 7,761 yards, a 666-yard par-6 |
| Summit Green Valley | 18 | High season from ฿3,900 (Golfasian) | Priciest, floodlit, water on most holes |
Every course in the table has its own page with layout notes and photos: Alpine Golf Resort, Gassan Legacy, Gassan Panorama and Summit Green Valley.
Add the caddie tip to these prices. It is paid in cash, usually ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, and more for an excellent caddie. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette.
Is the long flight worth it for a golf trip?
For seven nights or more, yes. For a three-day break, no. You lose a full day each way to travel, which only pays off if you have enough days to fill with rounds.
Most routes from Europe go via Bangkok, with roughly 11 to 12 hours long-haul and then about 1 hour 15 minutes north to Chiang Mai. The other common option is a Gulf connection via Doha or Dubai. Thailand is on UTC+7, six hours ahead of Central European winter time, so expect a slow first day.
Our honest rule: if you have fewer than five nights on the ground, stay in Spain. From seven nights the long flight starts to make sense, because you get five or six rounds in reliable weather instead of a few rounds you hope will stay dry. Golfers flying from Britain should read our guide to the cheapest way to fly from the UK to Chiang Mai. If you want to break the journey, see our Bangkok stopover guide.
When does a Chiang Mai winter trip go wrong?
Book for late February or March and you risk burning-season smoke. The AQI regularly passes 150 and on the worst days goes far higher. This is our biggest honest warning.
Chiang Mai's burning season usually builds through February, peaks in March and can run into April. In recent seasons PM2.5 readings have climbed above 300 on the worst days, and the city has ranked among the most polluted in the world. You will not enjoy 18 holes in that air, and the mountain views that make the courses special disappear into haze.
The other downside is price. November to March is high season, so fees are higher and the best weekend tee times at Highlands and Alpine go first. Book earlier than you would for Spain.
Which Chiang Mai courses feel most different from Spain?
Highlands and Alpine offer championship golf against a mountain backdrop, Royal Chiang Mai plays like a British links, and floodlit Gassan Legacy lets you play at night.
Spanish coastal golf is mostly resort golf, with sea views, villas along the fairways and turf baked firm by the summer. Chiang Mai feels different in four ways:
- Chiang Mai Highlands: a 27-hole Schmidt-Curley design from 2005, with paspalum turf, more than 130 bunkers and the best spa of any course in the region.
- Alpine Golf Resort: a 2008 Ron Garl design of up to about 7,540 yards, with a par-5 4th of around 652 yards and an island-green par-3. It hosted the Asian Tour in 2013 and 2014.
- Royal Chiang Mai: Peter Thomson's 1996 links-style layout with pot bunkers and run-offs. Conditioning is variable, and we tell every guest that.
- Mae Jo: north of the city among orchards, with views of Doi Suthep. Its conditioning is the weakest of the premium set and pace of play can be slow.
Caddies are compulsory on every round, one per golfer. For golfers used to Spain this is the biggest cultural change, and most end up loving it. Our list of the best golf courses in Chiang Mai ranks the full set.
Should I book courses direct or take a golf package?
For a single round, booking direct is fine. For a 7-night winter trip with 5 rounds, a package that covers transfers, caddies, carts and tee times is usually simpler.
The courses ring the valley, and most are 30 to 45 minutes from the city. A pre-booked private return transfer to a course costs about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500, and Grab is unreliable for a 6:30 pickup with a full golf bag. Over five rounds those transfers add up, and in high season you would have five separate bookings to manage.
A CMGT Golf package puts green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support into one quote. We work by enquiry. You tell us your dates and handicap range, we send a quote, and a deposit confirms the booking. The Lanna Signature 7-night package, with five rounds, matches the trip length we recommend for a European winter escape. The Highlands Classic 5-night package suits a shorter stay. Send us your dates through our Chiang Mai golf holidays page and we will price the trip. Our direct vs agent booking guide explains when a package is not worth it.
What should a first winter trip to Chiang Mai look like?
Fly in between late November and January and stay seven nights. Play five rounds across three or four courses, and keep one rest day for the city.
This plan works for most of our European guests:
- Day 1: Land, transfer to hotel, no golf.
- Day 2: Gentle opener at Gassan Legacy or Mae Jo.
- Day 3: Chiang Mai Highlands.
- Day 4: Rest, Thai massage, Old City temples.
- Day 5: Alpine Golf Resort.
- Day 6: Royal Chiang Mai or Gassan Panorama.
- Day 7: Final round, then a farewell dinner.
- Day 8: Fly home.
The dress code is close to Spain's: collared shirt, tailored shorts, soft spikes and no denim. The weather is the main difference. Pack sun cream, plus a light layer for 7:00 tee times in December and January.

Is Chiang Mai warmer than Spain for winter golf?
Yes, by a clear margin. Málaga is the warmest part of mainland Spain's golf coast, and it averages a January temperature of about 17C with regular wet spells, according to Weather2Travel and Thomas Cook climate data. In Chiang Mai, December and January days average about 28 to 29C, and it barely rains from November to February. Early mornings on the highland courses can start at 15 to 22C, which is ideal for walking off the first tee. The trade-off is the flight. Spain is two to three hours from most of northern Europe, while Chiang Mai takes 13 hours or more with a connection.
How long does it take to fly from Europe to Chiang Mai?
There are no regular nonstop flights from Europe to Chiang Mai, so plan on one connection. The usual route is a long-haul flight of roughly 11 to 12 hours from London or another European hub to Bangkok, then about 1 hour 15 minutes north to Chiang Mai. Gulf carriers via Doha or Dubai are the other common option. Allow a full travel day each way. Chiang Mai airport is close to the Old City, so the final transfer to most hotels takes 10 to 20 minutes. Every CMGT Golf package includes airport transfers.
When is the best month for a winter golf trip to Chiang Mai?
December and January are the safest months. Mornings are cool, the air is dry, rain is rare and mountain views are clear. November is also excellent, with lush courses after the rainy season. Be careful from mid-February onwards. Burning season usually builds through February, peaks in March and can run into April, and on the worst days the AQI passes 150 and can go much higher. If your winter break falls in March, check IQAir daily before you book, or play Hua Hin or Phuket on the coast instead, where the northern smoke does not reach.
Is Chiang Mai golf cheaper than Spain in winter?
On the course, usually yes. In the Apr-Oct 2026 green season, an all-in round at Chiang Mai Highlands is ฿3,400 and at Gassan Panorama ฿1,950, both including green fee, mandatory caddie and cart. Winter is Chiang Mai's high season, so fees rise, but most courses still cost less than a premium Costa del Sol round. Spain usually wins on flights, though, because a short-haul fare costs a fraction of a long-haul one. On a stay of 7 nights or more, Chiang Mai's lower daily costs tend to close that gap. For a three-day break, Spain is cheaper.
How does Chiang Mai compare with Phuket, Hua Hin or Bali for golf?
Chiang Mai has the cooler mornings, the mountain scenery and the widest choice of courses within an hour of one city. Phuket and Hua Hin are beach destinations. They are hotter and more humid in winter, but the northern burning season in March does not affect them. Bali has fewer courses and a wet season that runs through the European winter. If you want a pure golf trip from November to February with cooler tee times, Chiang Mai is our first pick. If your dates fall in March, Hua Hin is the better call, and we will tell you so.
