Thailand Golf Without the Nightlife: Chiang Mai vs Pattaya

Thailand golf without the nightlife: why Chiang Mai beats Pattaya for couples and older groups, with real green fees, quiet courses and honest trade-offs.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team29 Oct 20269 min read

If you want Thailand golf without the nightlife, base yourself in Chiang Mai instead of Pattaya. We book 13 courses around the valley, the airport is about 4 km from the Old City, and evenings mean night markets and temples rather than bar strips. Green-season all-in rounds cost ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 in 2026 (CMGT Golf, 2026). The main catch is smoke haze in spring.

Why do golfers swap Pattaya for Chiang Mai?

They want the golf without the scene: mountain-backed courses, short transfers, quiet evenings, and a city with real culture that suits couples, families and groups over fifty.

Pattaya's golf is genuinely good. Golfasian's Pattaya destination guide (accessed 2026-10-29) counts over 25 courses within an hour of town. What puts off many of our guests is the town, not the golf. Walking Street and the bar districts dominate the centre, and it is hard to plan a quiet dinner for a couple or a group of retired friends without walking past them.

Chiang Mai is the opposite. It is a walled old city with temples on most blocks, the hills around it are full of courses, and the night out is usually a market stall and an early bed before a 6:30am pickup. Golfers who come here for the first time tend to say the same thing: they played as much golf as they would have in Pattaya, and came home rested.

How many courses can you play from a Chiang Mai base?

Enough for a week without repeats: we book 13 courses around the valley, from a 1970s army layout to modern championship courses in the foothills.

The spread is wide in age, style and price. Lanna Golf Club was laid out for the Royal Thai Army in 1974 and is about 10 minutes from the Old City. North Hill Golf Club is roughly 15 minutes from the airport. Out in the foothills sit Alpine Golf Resort, a Ron Garl design, and Chiang Mai Highlands, a Lee Schmidt design. South-east in Lamphun, 30 to 45 minutes out, are the three Gassan courses.

Our full course directory covers every one of them. For rankings, see our guide to the best golf courses in Chiang Mai. Groups on a long stay can also add a Chiang Rai leg, for example Santiburi Country Club.

How do Chiang Mai and Pattaya compare for a golf trip?

Pattaya wins on sheer course numbers and beach access. Chiang Mai wins on transfer times, scenery, calm evenings and culture for partners who don't play.

What does a quiet golf day in Chiang Mai look like?

Early pickup, tee off around 7am, finish by lunch, then a massage, a temple or a nap, and dinner at a night market by 7pm.

A typical day starts with a driver collecting you from your hotel at about 6:30. Every course gives each golfer a caddie, almost always a woman, who reads the greens, cleans your clubs and keeps the pace moving. The caddie fee is usually bundled into an all-in rate, and on top of that you hand your caddie a cash tip at the bag drop, typically a few hundred baht for 18 holes. Our caddie culture and tipping guide covers the etiquette.

You will usually be off the course before the afternoon heat. If you want to stay out later, play under lights instead of sitting in a bar. Gassan Legacy runs floodlit night golf, often at a lower rate than its daytime round, and Summit Green Valley is also lit. Ask us for the current twilight and night rates when you enquire.

Which Chiang Mai courses suit couples and older golfers?

Gassan Legacy for gentle, flat golf, Lanna for walking and being close to the city, Highlands for the spa, and Royal Chiang Mai for a classic links-style test.

  • Gassan Legacy: par 72 and the flattest of the Gassan courses, with wide fairways that forgive a wayward drive. ฿1,950 by day, all-in, in the 2026 green season.
  • Lanna Golf Club: 27 holes, 10 minutes from the Old City, and walking is allowed, which is rare in Thailand. One of the cheaper green fees in the valley.
  • Chiang Mai Highlands: consistently well-conditioned paspalum grass, plenty of bunkering, and an on-site spa for tired backs.
  • Royal Chiang Mai: a Peter Thomson design with pot bunkers and run-off areas. Conditioning varies, so we check a recent report before we book it.

Some courses to approach with care. Gassan Panorama plays very long from the back tees, so higher handicappers should move forward a set. Mae Jo is only about 20 minutes from the city, but pace of play and conditioning can be inconsistent, so it is better as a resort stay than a must-play.

What do green fees cost in Chiang Mai in 2026?

Green-season 2026 all-in rounds ran from ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy and Panorama to ฿3,700 at Alpine. High-season rates from 1 November are higher.

High season runs from 1 November to 31 March. It is the coolest and driest stretch, and the most expensive. Courses publish their high-season rack rates unevenly, often only as images, so we confirm exact fees when we quote rather than quoting a figure that may be out of date. Weekend rates are usually higher than weekdays at the premium courses, so a Tuesday to Thursday run of rounds saves money. For a breakdown of where the money goes, see our guide to cart and caddie fees in Chiang Mai.

Where should a quiet golf group stay in Chiang Mai?

Stay in the Old City or by the river for temples and dinners within walking distance, or at a course resort like Alpine or Mae Jo for complete calm.

The Old City and the riverside both suit couples. You can walk to dinner and to temples, and courses are a 15 to 45 minute drive away. If you want to avoid noise at night, skip Nimman, which is the bar and cafe district. Staying on a course is the quietest option of all: our Alpine Stay & Play and Mae Jo Stay & Play put you a short walk from the first tee. Our guide to where to base a Chiang Mai golf trip compares each area.

What can non-golfers do, and what fills rest days instead of bars?

Plenty: the temple on Doi Suthep, a Thai cooking class, the Sunday Walking Street market, and a proper Thai massage after back-to-back rounds.

Non-golfing partners often enjoy Chiang Mai more than the golfers do. A morning cooking class (see our best Chiang Mai cooking class pick) gets them back for lunch together. After two rounds in a row, an hour of Thai massage does more for your swing than a range session. Our guide to golf and Thai massage recovery explains how to fit it in.

What are the downsides of Chiang Mai versus Pattaya?

Three honest ones: smoke haze in burning season from mid-January to mid-April, no beach, and fewer courses within an hour than Pattaya's 25-plus.

The haze is the serious one. Each spring, crop and forest fires across northern Thailand fill the valley with smoke. IQAir reported Chiang Mai above AQI 150 on 16 April 2026 (accessed 2026-10-29), and the worst days that spring were far higher. Mountain views disappear and early-morning rounds are the ones most affected.

There is also no beach, and most Western visitors reach Chiang Mai on a connecting flight through Bangkok. Our Bangkok stopover guide shows how to turn that connection into a rest night. For the best window to travel, see the best time for golf in Chiang Mai: November to February.

Is a golf package worth it for a quiet Chiang Mai trip?

For three or more rounds, usually yes: one quote covers tee times, caddies, carts, hotel and private transfers. For a single round, book direct.

If you arrange it yourself, a private round trip to a course costs roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500, and you pay that for every round. Ride-hailing apps are unreliable for 6am pickups with golf bags. As a market reference, Golfasian lists a one-week Chiang Mai package covering hotel, green fees, caddies and transfers (check their current price, as it moves with the season).

Frequently asked questions

Is Chiang Mai a good alternative to Pattaya for golf?

Yes, if what you want is the golf rather than the nightlife. We book 13 courses around the Chiang Mai valley, including Alpine Golf Resort, Chiang Mai Highlands and Royal Chiang Mai. The airport is about 4 km from the Old City, so transfers are short. Evenings are night markets, temples and riverside dinners, not a bar strip. Pattaya has more courses, with Golfasian counting over 25 within an hour of town, and it has the beach. If a calmer base matters more to you than course count, Chiang Mai is the better fit.

When should I avoid a Chiang Mai golf trip?

Avoid March, and be cautious from mid-January to mid-April. That is burning season in northern Thailand, when crop and forest fires push the air quality index well into unhealthy levels on many days. IQAir reported Chiang Mai above AQI 150 on 16 April 2026. November to February is the best window: cool mornings, dry fairways and clear mountain views. June to October is wetter, but you can usually play in the morning and green fees are at their lowest.

Are there courses in Chiang Mai that suit older or higher-handicap golfers?

Yes. Gassan Legacy in Lamphun is the flattest and gentlest of the Gassan courses, and it is floodlit for cooler evening rounds. Lanna Golf Club is about 10 minutes from the Old City and is one of the few courses that lets you walk. Chiang Mai Highlands has an on-site spa for recovery. Every course gives you a caddie, and carts are standard, which makes long or hilly layouts much easier on the legs than they would be at home.

How much does a round of golf cost in Chiang Mai?

For the April to October 2026 green season, all-in rates (green fee, caddie and cart) ran from ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy and Gassan Panorama to ฿3,400 at Chiang Mai Highlands and ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). High season starts on 1 November and costs more, and published rack rates for it are patchy, so confirm the exact figure when you book. On top of that, budget a cash tip for your caddie, typically a few hundred baht per round.

Do I need a package or can I book Chiang Mai golf myself?

For one round, book direct. It is often the cheapest option. For three or more rounds, a package usually pays off because one quote covers tee times, caddies, carts, your hotel and private transfers. A private round trip to a course costs roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 if you arrange it yourself, and ride-hailing apps are unreliable for early pickups with golf bags. CMGT Golf works by enquiry: we send a quote and confirm your booking with a deposit.
